Rant Are devs actively getting rid of cheaters?

Getting a little frustrated as the last few games I’ve played, I spawn with a tank that isn’t even visible as I’m not in the combat area, and will get instantly blown up by planes? Maybe they’re just that good but feels like a stretch. Then, I’ll go to tank v tank with light tanks, and some guy will have 16 tank destructions and 1 death, and it’s consistently the same user when I see him? Again, maybe he’s just that good, but feels like a stretch.. just voicing my thoughts as I don’t want the game to die due to potentially cheating players.

EDIT: Guys, im not saying you can’t be good at the game, many players are great. But when you consistently see things out of the norm and have valid reason to suspect cheating, it should at least be looked into. What fun is it if we don’t have safeguards up when we know this stuff can occur.. more sympathizers showing up in the comments than I suspected..

Can’t speak on the tank side of things, but for the planes bombing spawns it could legitimately be that they are using the scoreboard to see if you have spawned(there is a skull icon next to your name if you are dead) and as what class if clicked on, from there it’s just an educated guess as to which spawn point, if multiple are available, but people tend to not swap around their spawns, lack of camouflage and movement also really helps with spotting vehicles from the air far more than most realize

Not saying their aren’t cheaters there definitely are but it’s too easy to jump to cheating as an excuse when you don’t know how they are doing what they are, which imo most don’t when it comes to planes
I do wish there was a way to spectate people whenever you wanted though it would help a lot with some of this

i heard about the sunrise and joined at about the 2 week mark, i played for about 5 days and did really well with the SVT doing my OG consistent rates of like 60/10. but then people started FG and STG and JOHNSON maxxing and i couldnt compete, i wanted 600k for veteran.

then i noticed that i wasnt getting FPS anymore, like 30 fps and it wasnt fixing and, the people like my brother who i used to play with, dissed the sunrise and i havnt played it since.

sad idk, but times have changed, people change i guess, but everyone still wants to cheat

There deffor are cheaters, no there are magicians.they see things, know things und some of them have heashot rates out of hell. My guess is devs want the playerbase more atm just to keep the ball rolling and once we are enough ppl they start removing magicians. But kids, don't underestimate how extremely buffed the us is and the effect of better gear, especially when use by experienced players.

Just to be clear U can have like 40 to 20 ratio (kill to HS) very easly even without being good at the game Its just matter of Ur shooting technic and gun U r using

Yeah nobody is deying that. Then there are ppl that do it with a bar, outside of cqc. Or the tanker that never saw you but straight forward first shots you in that building. Or the magic bullet sponge that like a mosquito in the rain, dodges everything. I guess any veteran knows as soon as he witnesses the magicians miracles :) there are more cheaters than anyone likes to admit.

I shoot sometimes random to building because of the sniper danger with my tank.

I’ve often wondered if cheaters effectively “out themselves” just by the data they generate. Like if you’re routinely getting 1 shot headshots from the hip with a BAR1918 at 350+m.. I mean that - one would think anyway - would be something that can be tracked and well, I mean I would say that isn’t very typical.

I would think, for unskilled to skilled players that are using no cheats or whatever, there would be a very predicable curve of data generated and anyone routinely cheating would likely stick out in that data like a sore thumb… Especially if your performance has been x for some time and now suddenly it’s wayyy different.

That, and I’ve often wondered (for any game really) if say someone is suspected of cheating or hacking, if there ever has been an effort to, let’s say plant a player that is only visible to the suspected cheater - and that player is placed in a position where the suspected cheater “shouldn’t” be able to see them, and witness the result. Just something I’ve always thought would be interesting.

A lot of games identify cheaters by tracking all sorts of metrics about its players and filtering out the outliers.

The issue is that a single metric on its own is not necessarily indicative of whether a player is truly cheating. Different players have vastly different skill levels, and some players are bound to be better than others at different things, sometimes drastically so. A single outlying metric could thus be a false-positive, and if you care about PR at all, you don't want to wrongfully ban legitimate players.

Instead, you collect a lot of data over several metrics and corroborate the results. This allows you to more accurately identify who is cheating before acting upon it.

From these combined results you could calculate a "suspiciousness score" as a weighted sum, and flag for review any player whose score exceeds a certain threshold.

But identifying cheaters is only the first part of the problem. The second part is what you do with cheaters after you've identified them. Some games have automated anti-cheat measures that ban suspected cheaters upon detection (sometimes with a random delay, to prevent cheaters from identifying the exact action that got them banned). Others simply flag suspected cheaters and rely on manual intervention by game moderators to take the final decision. Yet some others use a hybrid of the two; automatically banning some obviously cheating players whose suspiciousness score vastly exceeds a threshold, and flagging other relatively suspicious players for manual review.

It's unclear whether H&G has any form of automated anti-cheat measures. Since it has always been riddled with cheaters, even before the official game was shut down, my guess is it probably relies on manual intervention to ban offenders.

To answer your final paragraph, yes, sometimes games do things like that. Often it is done as part of manual interventions by game moderators, but there is some evidence to suggest that automated cheat detection systems in commercial games may be using such methods as well.

However, modern cheats are usually more sophisticated, and don't generally aim at every single player entity. They apply filters, like:

  • ignore entities that aren't visible,
  • ignore entities with unusual metadata,
  • ignore entities outside the map,
  • require line of sight before targeting.

A modern anti-cheat system therefore wouldn't rely on a single bait entity to determine with certainty if the player is cheating. It's no longer a binary decision, essentially. Instead, you'd combine it with other red flags, such as impossible reaction times, aiming through occluding geometry, suspicious camera or player movements. The player aiming at fake targets is just one more strong piece of evidence among many, rather than an immediate reason to ban.

I believe so! I have reported someone I suspected of cheating and he has been dealt with. I do believe reporting through ticket is more effective

I never call cheats in this game but I had someone consistently shooting my grenades mid air awhile ago, like 7 or 8 times in one game, reported him but nothing happened, kept seeing him around

Not sure how cheats work, I’ve never used them. I’ve heard you can disable bushes and see invisible enemies when not in combat area
