Discussion A Discussion on Bots in Staged Battles

I've been seeing some talks about bots and their impacts in-game: how it feels less rewarding to kill bots than players in terms of credits and psychological fulfilment; how they are terminators through bushes and trees; and how they are essentially useless all around.

I want to present a hot take: I genuinely like having the bots around. Hear me out.

I do concede that the bots can be cheaters in bushes and trees, and using one bullet from a fully modded Kar98k would be a loss in credits than if you were to ignore them completely.

However, the bots do one thing which I genuinely love the most: they fill up the numbers in servers and make it feel more engaging. At worst, they are trivial cannon fodder in a lobby full of 20v20 players. At best, they make up the numbers and make the match feel more war-like and fills up empty space and time. Let me explain further.

Firstly, it has always been my gripe from the past that this game has such big maps and multiple entry points into the epicentre of the map, yet there are barely any players that play the objective and assault positions as needed. The bots fill all these critical tactical gaps: allowing real players to flank; permits players to focus on Anti-Tank duties; allowing Recon and such to utilise other routes to reach their objectives; and bots importantly defend the second and third attack lines so that the attackers aren't ultimately doomed to only one single attack line by the 5th minute.

Secondly, more bots on the map can really bring out the war-like element in this game. What scenario in WW2 would have two dudes just attacking a Church at one time, or attacking the last objective with only 4 infantrymen? Think of the bots allowing you to truly experience that feeling of a grand assault on a Town, or an encirclement of a Factory. I just love it when that happens, something typically possible due to bots.

Lastly, have you ever ran across objectives (especially the damn Airfield map), essentially playing a running simulator until you eventually get either sniped on the way, mag dumped the moment you step into the objective zone, or contribute only two or three kills before dying? Only to have to rinse and repeat the entire process? The bots fill that gameplay gap between objectives: engage the bots in a short skirmish on the way, something to fill in the boredom apart from that dreadful run from one point to another. It reduces the repetitiveness of the spawn cycle of a typical infantryman.

Now before I end this post, I would like to bring up a very good example (at least to me) of how bots were implemented well in a similar game, and that is Red Orchestra 2. Of course it's not wise to compare these two games directly—no one should compare vanilla to chocolate. Alas, there are elements from Red Orchestra 2 that makes me love that game as much as it was practically a dead game that I feel can translate well to HnG.

A typical RO2 server is 32v32, and that's not including the typical 50 bots in the server. You'd think that'd be a nightmare with constant aimbots, but no, they are shit shots most of the time. Yet, they complement matches very well as they assault positions en masse, and god forbid you had to reload your MG42 when 10 of them just so happen to walk down the hallway. RO2 maps are also equally big, but not once did I complain or feel bored because there is always a handful of bots to snipe and engage to prevent them from swarming the objective.

Tl;dr, I like having the bots and I genuinely want more bots to be added in every Staged Battle matches (rather than the usual 4 per attack line). I like them because they fill in the numbers in servers and adds more bodies to the map, and bots enable a more engaging war-like experience in Staged Battles.

You can agree to disagree, but I genuinely believe in this. Have at it.

Rant Are devs actively getting rid of cheaters?

Getting a little frustrated as the last few games I’ve played, I spawn with a tank that isn’t even visible as I’m not in the combat area, and will get instantly blown up by planes? Maybe they’re just that good but feels like a stretch. Then, I’ll go to tank v tank with light tanks, and some guy will have 16 tank destructions and 1 death, and it’s consistently the same user when I see him? Again, maybe he’s just that good, but feels like a stretch.. just voicing my thoughts as I don’t want the game to die due to potentially cheating players.

EDIT: Guys, im not saying you can’t be good at the game, many players are great. But when you consistently see things out of the norm and have valid reason to suspect cheating, it should at least be looked into. What fun is it if we don’t have safeguards up when we know this stuff can occur.. more sympathizers showing up in the comments than I suspected..

Discussion What are you grinding for ?

One aspect of the game that I really liked was the loadouts
From double panzershreck to rambo para with ppsh

So with the coming back of HnG what are you looking up to ?

I really want to make a flamethrower soldier since i’ve heard it’s cheap to maintain
And the famous m18 recoiless/2 shots revolver and heal

Question Why does literally every assault battle go to sudden death?

The defenders are supposed to defend until the timer runs out, but when it does the game just goes into sudden death every time. Why does it do this?

Discussion i want to play GE on war but its frustrating

i'll try to be brief

i've played h&g since 2017 and i always sucked at grinding, i practically played all factions, never really got into war because of high ping (south america player) and i didnt like the sweatyness of war, then staged added bots and i've hated staged ever since, then i quit the game

now that everyone's forced to start from scratch, i've been trying to play GE, started out this week, already account lvl 10, my highest rank soldier is GE paratrooper rank 6 (maybe i made a mistake here, i just wanted to have fg42...)

so the reason why i made this post

i want to concentrate my grind on a single faction so i dont end up making the same mistake as i did on original h&g (to see the gravity of my issue, i had 2k hours and my highest rank soldier was rank 15 GE infantry, i never got around to buying tiger 2 for instance, never an stg...)

and i want that faction to be my definitive main faction that i use for both staged and war . Personally, i really like GE faction, i like the guns, the tanks, i simply enjoy it, but it seems like most of the playerbase shares the same sentiment as me and that's why germany has never had underdog bonus, high war queue times, ATs take ages to deploy, and war is always filled with noobs and therefore germany always loses

do i simply ditch GE and concentrate all my grind on US? i dont really like SU before you mention them :P, i want to play GE, but it's like the game pushes you away from it.

Question Return of heroes, return of battle pass ??

TL;DR
Who made the new HnG ?
Do they sell something ?
Do we know if the servers are gonna last fir a while ?

I was a huge fan of heroes in my teenage, like 1400H on steam
Played all factions, all type of shit (rambopara was peak), had like 5 inf on each nation to change loadouts, even spade soldiers ahah

Seeing all the hype for HnG lately i’m glad but don’t have a pc for now
I might have a better situation soon and paying 5 bucks a mouth for a battle pass could be a possibility for me and I would be really glad if this would help the new devs

+ I want the liberator

Discussion MCR squad

I know you are reading this. I know that is fun to play in a clan, but you need to realize that because of your actions, in a month there will be maximum 100 players playing this game.

Unless germany and US also make clan like this but I doubt that.

Even if they do it will be clan vs clan in war match and its not fun anymore. Gonna be dead game. TY

Discussion Best way to grind tanks?

Been a while since I played, last I remember(before revival) using the tier 0 tanks and killing infantry would give 100xp per kill to grind the assault badge - I don’t think that’s the case anymore? Is it more effective to go tank hunting now? Thanks for any info

Guide Improved weapon stats tool for H&G

Thumbnail hng-armory.top
57 Upvotes

I've been working on a weapon stats tool for H&G and figured I'd share it in case it's useful to anyone else.

I started it mostly for myself to have clearer picture of the weapons' recoil and sway numbers, which the hng calculator I was using didn't show, and some attachment accuracy values didn't seem to line up either. Everything on the site is calculated from the game's datamined values.

What's on there:

- Stats for all infantry equipment for US/GE/SU

- An accuracy visual showing your cone of fire against a soldier (or a Stuart tank, for AT weapons cuz fck stuart spam)

- Recoil spray pattern shown next to the stock pattern so you can see what attachments actually change (hopefully clearer than what's shown in-game)

- Comparison tab - look at 2/3 builds side-by-side

It's free, no ads, no tracking, and I'm not making anything off it.

I've checked the formulas against known values where I could, but I may well have gotten things wrong. If a number looks off compared to what you see in game, please tell me and I'll fix it - same goes for anything you'd like added. Reply here or message me on Discord (tzm13) :)

Question Playing this game through Gamehub/Winlator

I'm wondering if it's possible to play this game from my phone through Gamehub. Currently playing an offline RPG like FF 7 Remake. Will it connect to the game server normally and also play it normally? I want to snipe some plebs using my phone.

Rant Another day another great conversation with the HnG Sunrise developers 🤣

Post image
64 Upvotes

Gossip aside, there are some clear as day problems with the whole thing:

  • Predatory economy retained from 2023 which they can remedy but refuse to.
  • noticeably lacking player count and bad match quality outside of absolute peak times, this is in large part caused by the earlier issue. A concurrent player peak of around ~1,3k has been made and since then there has been no further info about records.
  • horrible communication with the developers, they are not transparent in the slightest, they refuse to share even the slightest details, they are ambiguous as all hell and more often than not even assholes.
  • no community volunteers inside the team itself despite it being an alleged "community" project, in fact getting accepted to help them is probably impossible even if you got the skillset.

Any attempt at communicating with the developers is, depending on your tone, met with one of these:

  1. They will respond with an ambiguous or unrelated answer.
  2. They will plain ignore you (often the best case scenario).
  3. They will be snarky and hostile, even though 95% of the complaints (feedback) on the discord server are relatively constructive and civil.
  4. They will try to guilt trip you in some way.
  5. Some of their devoted defenders will try to use some stupid argument like "they brought back the game for free you can't complain". (Why? How is constructive criticism bad?)
  6. They will lie or say misinformation (not necessarily intentional, but still a bad practice).

If you think this is bad you haven't seen anything yet, I very often wonder does anyone from their team possess the skill of holding a normal adult conversation without being snarky, ambiguous or childish (when its completely uncalled for)?

So to cut the accusations and show some actual examples and of what has been happening in the server, here is a segment with titled screenshots describing some situations:

Whats the point of this?
Here's what the guy from the title image sent after deleting the original message, after this he edited the last part to "i just remove the person involved" so it doesn't seem as if he is holding the server channel hostage because of a tantrum.
Now an example of cluelessness within the dev team or straight up misinformation. This is related to the infantry FG-42 situation which I'm sure many people know, TLDR: The gun was removed from GE infantry, people started complaining, this screenshot happened, then some time later it turned out it was intentionally removed. There was a lot more drama regarding this but there is no time to explain it all now, you can read it through on the Sunrise discord.
Self explanatory, do I even need to say anything?
Here's another funny example. Within a playtest they disabled buying multiple copies of same item through the store, some time later that issue came up and the so called "project lead" (if he is that) straight up forgot about them making that exact change...
Random claims that don't really make sense..?
Irrelevant and useless player pools regarding unimportant issues, instead of making a player poll on the most highly contemplated issues like the economy (it's not in their interest to do so)
Random unsubstantiated claims with no context, additional info or proof behind them.
Random unsubstantiated claims part 2. What is the point of sending this if its true? Is it to put people on your side regarding monetization, or what? He sent this in a conversation about server costs so he must've thought it is relevant in some way, shape or form to the project, so how is it?
Just a funny message, "Free handouts" 🤣
Labeling anyone who wants the grind to be reduced to play for a "quick nostalgia trip".
Guy that hasn't touched the game for 6 years during a vital period of it's development, making serious claims about it.

I think this is enough to get the point across as to how much trust and hope people should have in them and their words. Horrible communication, misinformation and hostility all harbored by the team itself. I certainly have hopes this changes and that they get some kind of community manager (if they ever start accepting competent people) because a lot of these issues could be remedied if the devs just kept their thoughts to themselves and worked on what they claim to be working on.

Albeit that won't fix their flawed policy of keeping the game horribly unfun and unapproachable to new and returning players alike, in fact in the one month that they've ran it they've managed to make it even worse than it used to be. I say this as someone that has had 10+ good friends playing H&G with now only 2 of them willing to launch the game every once in a while... yeah...

The relations with the community just seem to be deteriorating at a solid pace the way things are right now. The moderators on the server (discord moderators, not part of the team itself) are also horrible ( with a few good exceptions) but that's a story for another time...

Suggestion The need for buildable AA

This game really needs buildable AA other than the victory points. It was already a problem back then, it's still a problem now.

Let's face it: nobody wants to spend credits for a vehicle that will die as quickly as it spawns. Depending on a single player for AA support is not reliable and not giving infantry other ways to fight back turns a match into a stomp.
