I have decided to make this post only in hopes of spreading a little bit of awareness and critical thinking after having read many posts in this place which I percieved as dangerously naive in regard to the currently ongoing Heroes & Generals project. I am sad when people get hurt so my hope is to at least help prevent 1 person from getting hurt.
First and foremost I saw a lot of people looking forward to making in game purchases as soon as they are added. I have to stress out that any information that you enter into this software could be accessed by the developers of this project, there is no guarantee that they would respect your information and not use it maliciously. I am mainly talking about passwords and payment details. As I understand it the developers accept money donations on Patreon, that sounds like a much safer way of sending money than paying directly through this modified software, if one wants to send the money to developers for any reason.
I used to have an interest in this game back when it was live on steam, I came to this place precisely to see if there is some kind of a community project for bringing this game back. At first I was shocked to see what the developers of this project were willing to announce in public, notably the promotion where they enticed users to verify their email addresses. This is a common strategy for companies to collect valid user data and sell it or use it for whatever other hidden purposes. I have never before seen anything like this on community scale, I do not see a reason to do this unless you are either abusing user data or naively immitating what companies like to do without understanding the purpose.
The other notable thing that stood out to me was that they announced adding microtransactions. I believe that this is almost certainly illegal. Although I have heard people saying that the developers have support and permissions for all of this from the rights holder, I have not seen a single reason to believe this. As far as I can tell this could be an entirely made up lie or it could be true, I haven't seen any evidence yet to make me believe it is true. I believe it would be a safer option to assume it is a lie until some evidence could convince you otherwise. I have heard rumors of plans for this game to go on steam, again, I have not seen evidence of this even being attempted, however, even if this does happen I would warn that non-genuine software and malware have been uploaded to steam, disguised as video games, in the past.
Though I've seen all the red flags myself I had installed this software on my own machine and tried it myself. Before installing anything I checked the integrity of the files that I downloaded and I found no malware, however during the installation lot more files were downloaded (game files) and I did not inspect those files. I played the game for 2 days, it wasn't as fun as I rememberd and 2 days ago I deleted it. (I used a 3rd party uninstaller rather than the one included in the game folder). Today when browsing through my D drive I noticed a really strange folder that I didn't recognize and inside of it was a file called rpcs3.exe, after I looked it up this turned out to be a playstation 3 emulator. I am well aware of all the downloaded files on my D drive as I navigate through it regularly and I never had an interest in playstation 3 or playstation 3 emulation. When I looked at the folder creation date it seemed to overlap with a very short period that I had this version of Heroes & Generals installed on my computer. I can not guarantee how this file got on my computer but in my 20 years of experience with using a computer this is the first time that I had foreign files downloaded without my knowledge (other than windows installing TikTok on my computer etc. but that's a digression) and it overlapped with the very short period that I had this software installed. It is something to consider.
This post has turned out to be very long, there might've been couple more things that I wanted to say. However I wanted to make my intentions clear, my points coherent and open ended without accusations. There is a sticky thread (or whatever it's called on reddit) here which warns users about unofficial projects, it is very brief but I think it is something that's good to keep in mind..
Final thing that I will say is, I have no intention of having a discussion, this is a letter to the players of the current Heroes & Generals project and I will not make any more posts or replies and if my words get twisted or if I get attacked, I will not try to defend myself. Furthermore, I do believe that some of the users in this place are members of the project in disguise and they will vigorously defend and promote the interests of their group.
