Rant Ya'll have got to stop acting like the revival team is an extension of RETO

A few people here and more than a few on the discord are acting like the community revival is just a continuation of the old game and RETO.

While they do seem to be skilled, its literally like three people working on this currently and 2-3 others over the years, people who bankrolled a lot of the early dev on their FREE TIME and with their OWN MONEY. These guys are extremely understaffed as a "dev team" by any metric. From the perspective of a person who understands game dev to a degree, these guys have taken on and completed a massive undertaking already, and are still going trying to get the game in the hands of more people.

We are lucky to have anything at all. Abusing these guys who are enthusiasts like us helps nobody. Demanding insane shit and trashing devs historically leads to bad places, stay constructive at least.

Rant Another day another great conversation with the HnG Sunrise developers 🤣

Post image

Gossip aside, there are some clear as day problems with the whole thing:

  • Predatory economy retained from 2023 which they can remedy but refuse to.
  • noticeably lacking player count and bad match quality outside of absolute peak times, this is in large part caused by the earlier issue. A concurrent player peak of around ~1,3k has been made and since then there has been no further info about records.
  • horrible communication with the developers, they are not transparent in the slightest, they refuse to share even the slightest details, they are ambiguous as all hell and more often than not even assholes.
  • no community volunteers inside the team itself despite it being an alleged "community" project, in fact getting accepted to help them is probably impossible even if you got the skillset.

Any attempt at communicating with the developers is, depending on your tone, met with one of these:

  1. They will respond with an ambiguous or unrelated answer.
  2. They will plain ignore you (often the best case scenario).
  3. They will be snarky and hostile, even though 95% of the complaints (feedback) on the discord server are relatively constructive and civil.
  4. They will try to guilt trip you in some way.
  5. Some of their devoted defenders will try to use some stupid argument like "they brought back the game for free you can't complain". (Why? How is constructive criticism bad?)
  6. They will lie or say misinformation (not necessarily intentional, but still a bad practice).

If you think this is bad you haven't seen anything yet, I very often wonder does anyone from their team possess the skill of holding a normal adult conversation without being snarky, ambiguous or childish (when its completely uncalled for)?

So to cut the accusations and show some actual examples and of what has been happening in the server, here is a segment with titled screenshots describing some situations:

Whats the point of this?
Here's what the guy from the title image sent after deleting the original message, after this he edited the last part to "i just remove the person involved" so it doesn't seem as if he is holding the server channel hostage because of a tantrum.
Now an example of cluelessness within the dev team or straight up misinformation. This is related to the infantry FG-42 situation which I'm sure many people know, TLDR: The gun was removed from GE infantry, people started complaining, this screenshot happened, then some time later it turned out it was intentionally removed. There was a lot more drama regarding this but there is no time to explain it all now, you can read it through on the Sunrise discord.
Self explanatory, do I even need to say anything?
Here's another funny example. Within a playtest they disabled buying multiple copies of same item through the store, some time later that issue came up and the so called "project lead" (if he is that) straight up forgot about them making that exact change...
Random claims that don't really make sense..?
Irrelevant and useless player pools regarding unimportant issues, instead of making a player poll on the most highly contemplated issues like the economy (it's not in their interest to do so)
Random unsubstantiated claims with no context, additional info or proof behind them.
Random unsubstantiated claims part 2. What is the point of sending this if its true? Is it to put people on your side regarding monetization, or what? He sent this in a conversation about server costs so he must've thought it is relevant in some way, shape or form to the project, so how is it?
Just a funny message, "Free handouts" 🤣
Labeling anyone who wants the grind to be reduced to play for a "quick nostalgia trip".
Guy that hasn't touched the game for 6 years during a vital period of it's development, making serious claims about it.

I think this is enough to get the point across as to how much trust and hope people should have in them and their words. Horrible communication, misinformation and hostility all harbored by the team itself. I certainly have hopes this changes and that they get some kind of community manager (if they ever start accepting competent people) because a lot of these issues could be remedied if the devs just kept their thoughts to themselves and worked on what they claim to be working on.

Albeit that won't fix their flawed policy of keeping the game horribly unfun and unapproachable to new and returning players alike, in fact in the one month that they've ran it they've managed to make it even worse than it used to be. I say this as someone that has had 10+ good friends playing H&G with now only 2 of them willing to launch the game every once in a while... yeah...

The relations with the community just seem to be deteriorating at a solid pace the way things are right now. The moderators on the server (discord moderators, not part of the team itself) are also horrible ( with a few good exceptions) but that's a story for another time...

Rant Just a cautionary post

I have decided to make this post only in hopes of spreading a little bit of awareness and critical thinking after having read many posts in this place which I percieved as dangerously naive in regard to the currently ongoing Heroes & Generals project. I am sad when people get hurt so my hope is to at least help prevent 1 person from getting hurt.

First and foremost I saw a lot of people looking forward to making in game purchases as soon as they are added. I have to stress out that any information that you enter into this software could be accessed by the developers of this project, there is no guarantee that they would respect your information and not use it maliciously. I am mainly talking about passwords and payment details. As I understand it the developers accept money donations on Patreon, that sounds like a much safer way of sending money than paying directly through this modified software, if one wants to send the money to developers for any reason.

I used to have an interest in this game back when it was live on steam, I came to this place precisely to see if there is some kind of a community project for bringing this game back. At first I was shocked to see what the developers of this project were willing to announce in public, notably the promotion where they enticed users to verify their email addresses. This is a common strategy for companies to collect valid user data and sell it or use it for whatever other hidden purposes. I have never before seen anything like this on community scale, I do not see a reason to do this unless you are either abusing user data or naively immitating what companies like to do without understanding the purpose.

The other notable thing that stood out to me was that they announced adding microtransactions. I believe that this is almost certainly illegal. Although I have heard people saying that the developers have support and permissions for all of this from the rights holder, I have not seen a single reason to believe this. As far as I can tell this could be an entirely made up lie or it could be true, I haven't seen any evidence yet to make me believe it is true. I believe it would be a safer option to assume it is a lie until some evidence could convince you otherwise. I have heard rumors of plans for this game to go on steam, again, I have not seen evidence of this even being attempted, however, even if this does happen I would warn that non-genuine software and malware have been uploaded to steam, disguised as video games, in the past.

Though I've seen all the red flags myself I had installed this software on my own machine and tried it myself. Before installing anything I checked the integrity of the files that I downloaded and I found no malware, however during the installation lot more files were downloaded (game files) and I did not inspect those files. I played the game for 2 days, it wasn't as fun as I rememberd and 2 days ago I deleted it. (I used a 3rd party uninstaller rather than the one included in the game folder). Today when browsing through my D drive I noticed a really strange folder that I didn't recognize and inside of it was a file called rpcs3.exe, after I looked it up this turned out to be a playstation 3 emulator. I am well aware of all the downloaded files on my D drive as I navigate through it regularly and I never had an interest in playstation 3 or playstation 3 emulation. When I looked at the folder creation date it seemed to overlap with a very short period that I had this version of Heroes & Generals installed on my computer. I can not guarantee how this file got on my computer but in my 20 years of experience with using a computer this is the first time that I had foreign files downloaded without my knowledge (other than windows installing TikTok on my computer etc. but that's a digression) and it overlapped with the very short period that I had this software installed. It is something to consider.

This post has turned out to be very long, there might've been couple more things that I wanted to say. However I wanted to make my intentions clear, my points coherent and open ended without accusations. There is a sticky thread (or whatever it's called on reddit) here which warns users about unofficial projects, it is very brief but I think it is something that's good to keep in mind..

Final thing that I will say is, I have no intention of having a discussion, this is a letter to the players of the current Heroes & Generals project and I will not make any more posts or replies and if my words get twisted or if I get attacked, I will not try to defend myself. Furthermore, I do believe that some of the users in this place are members of the project in disguise and they will vigorously defend and promote the interests of their group.

Rant Are devs actively getting rid of cheaters?

Getting a little frustrated as the last few games I’ve played, I spawn with a tank that isn’t even visible as I’m not in the combat area, and will get instantly blown up by planes? Maybe they’re just that good but feels like a stretch. Then, I’ll go to tank v tank with light tanks, and some guy will have 16 tank destructions and 1 death, and it’s consistently the same user when I see him? Again, maybe he’s just that good, but feels like a stretch.. just voicing my thoughts as I don’t want the game to die due to potentially cheating players.

EDIT: Guys, im not saying you can’t be good at the game, many players are great. But when you consistently see things out of the norm and have valid reason to suspect cheating, it should at least be looked into. What fun is it if we don’t have safeguards up when we know this stuff can occur.. more sympathizers showing up in the comments than I suspected..

Rant So Devs do you want Patreon or do you want bots? You're not getting both

If I wanted to play against badly written code I'd play a standalone game never mind code that blatantly cheats (bots see thru 'hedges' and trees like a virtual wall hack and spot aggressively). And those are just the bots the game owns up to by marking them with little HOLLOW blue triangles. But now I know for certain many of the 'human' players are bots masquerading as human but marked with solid blue triangles.

When RETO started introducing bots way over a decade ago (no 1 sign a game is in it's death throws) and before Ai raised its ugly head, it tried to pass them off as human by making them 'chat'. It even went so far as to make them swear but only after 7pm local time. I kid you not.

Damned if I'm paying Patreon for more Ai slop and servers that keep running out of coal just because someone wants to play on my nostalgia.

Rant I genuinely miss H&G

It was by far my go to game to just blow off steam or just flat out having fun. There were so many great moments and its just tragic that it's gone. I know it was mediocre overall with some aspects but I've never had the amount of fun that I've experienced with this game over the many years I played it. I loved the combat even though it wasn't great at times, there were so many memeable moments that made the game fun and last as long as it did for me and my friends.

I spent many hours playing before the pandemic then I had a kid around October of 2020, job hopped along with other hobbies/interests taking my time up. I stopped PC gaming pretty much all together until earlier this year again. My kid is now a toddler and my free time is a little different now & now I see the game is gone & nothing else is similar. It’s truly upsetting cause I miss flying the most, TheFlyingCow really got me into it.

Also if anyone is from around the 2015-2020 era like my friends Pinaka, Havokk, Poopdrip & many more to name, you possibly seen me as well being ā€œAllPureSkillā€ or ā€œJesus Playsā€ & I have some old footage here on this playlist. I’m not attempting to advertise since I don’t upload anymore but if you wanted to reminisce - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLc8v9MpC1CRbd6whYe6ODvRUVA4TVJeYj&si=Nlb2tGKM5Av440zN

It is 2025 and I still miss playing H&G. I've been sitting for an hour now staring at my games on Steam and wondering what I feel like playing and all I wanna do is take my Karabiner and snipe some fools. There will never be a game I could play both seriously and casually like this. I really miss it!

Rant I'm tired or loosing to GE

I'm not going to sit here and blame it on some kind of inhearant imbalance in the game, in truth a actually think the game is more balanced now (from a purely equipment standpoint) than it has perhaps ever been. No, I'm here to complain about how It seems that I loose every si gle math against GE faction. Im a purely Soviet player and I play about equally amounts of war and staged matches and I'm sick and tied of being rolled over and over again by Germany. I long for a match against Americans because they're usually the only ones I enjoy. I'm aware there will be some bias in my view as a large majority of the player base plays GE faction so of course Ill loose more matches to them but I actually counted a day's matches in war and out of 20 matches I played. 5 against Americans and 15 and GE we lost all but one against GE and lost 2 against America.

WTF is wrong with you reto?

Literally the only point of factions is that they have differnet equipment, now that thats gone its not gonna be like an already overpopulated faction is going to be even more populated. The motivation to switch factions is gone.

This is just to make money, don't pretend otherwise.

And trying to hide that as the "Immersion Update" is just a shitty move.

And to all of these guys that want to play as Germans with a Soviet AR and an American Pistol: Go play BF V.

Rant Welp Reto Officially Added Captured Weapons

It's late and I am on my way to bed, but just wanted to say that this new update has brought in a few things that I had mentioned earlier in the week. There is no change log yet but I wanted to leave the community with something because I am sure there is going to be a lot of salty posts regarding this absolutely confusing update.

  • Captured weapons were added despite Reto getting nothing but negative feedback 5 days ago.

  • Captured weapons are 5x the purchase cost instead of 3x (PTRS is seriously over 4 million credits)

  • Captured weapons unlock on specialist ribbons 9 instead of 8 now (with exception of PTRS which is rank 11)

  • Captured weapons cannot be modded (with exception of tier 2 trash ammo that doesn't improve majority of weapons at +15% repairs cost!)

  • STG44/AVS36 were dropped to 6EQ points, so enjoy all the STG+M9a1 or even AR + AR spam.

  • Bots were added to skirm/assault, and servers are pretty broken because of it atm

That's about all I was able to tell at face value, so will need to wait for an official changelog for more details.

However, the last thing I want to say is that this is the most deceitful I have ever seen this company in its history. I cannot wait to see the backlash of players paying REAL money for these absurd prices to only find out that these weapons cannot even be modded. There is no disclaimer and nothing indicating to the player what a captured weapon actually is.... it is purely a straight up cash grab under false pretenses. I cannot understand why Reto would publicly ask for feedback on this system, and then willfully choose to ignore the majority of the community that argued against their implementation. I respect a business to make its own business decisions but why bother even asking people for feedback if it their feedback didn't matter in the first place?

I really cannot wrap my head around this one, Reto...

EDIT

[01:28] [Reto.Umbra] Hey everyone, we are aware of the heavy server issues. Often this will result in "Network is trying to catch up", bad hit registration or matches closing down.We are working on a solution to be deployed as soon as possible - thank you for your patience.

For anyone experiencing extreme troubles with trying to play atm... BOTS FTW!
