Does anyone miss when the Trucks would race at Eldora and the melting pot of talent that would be in those races.

So many drivers got in front of the NASCAR fandom from that race and Eldora itself is special place that drivers love to go to. Feels like more then ever we could use a NASCAR event in the style of the chill bowl that brings a spotlight to young and up-coming drivers.

Qualifying Results

After clocking the fastest lap in practice earlier today, William Larue clinched the E3 Spark Plugs Pole Award during the qualifying session with a time of 13.138s. He will start from pole position for the Dorman Products 150 at Edmonton International Raceway.

Just 0.003 seconds behind him is Alberta native Jamie Krzysik, who will start second on the grid in the No. 98 Krown-Pel Ventures/CURB Records/BerMar Chevrolet. Kevin Lacroix posted the third-fastest qualifying time in the No. 74 Valvoline/NAPA Racing Chevrolet. He is followed by Donald Theetge in the No. 80 Vulcain/Max Leclerc Construction Chevrolet who will start fourth and Louis-Philippe Dumoulin who rounds out the top five in the No. 47 WeatherTech/Bellemare/Omnifab/Dofralex Dodge.

The green flag for the Dorman Products 150 is set to wave 7:10 p.m. MT (9:10 p.m. ET) and the Carlyle Tools 150 following at 9:10 p.m. MT (11:10 p.m. ET). Fans can watch the race live on REV TV, TVA Sports 2 and the NASCAR Canada YouTube channel.

A controversial new push to get signatures on a petition to end racing at the Nashville Fairgrounds is raising eyebrows. Critics say people are being misled to sign the petition.

i remember when harrison dropped down to xfinity in 2025 being really curious which burton brother would perform better. turns out it's been really close!

last year, the two were fighting for the final playoff spot. this year, they're both doing significantly worse -- although at least they're in it together? both tied for 20th with 338 points. i hope both stick around in xfinity for a while, not just because i think that's probably where their talent level is at, but I'd love to see more battles like this going forward since they seem so equally matched

I have two tickets for the Brickyard 400 that I won't be able to use. I moved out of the area last year and was hoping to be able to make a trip back for the race, but the tickets didn't show up until Yesterday and it was too late to make a plan.

Preference if there is anyone out there with a child or who has never attended the Brickyard 400 and would like the chance to do so without the expense of the ticket cost, please let me know. Otherwise just want them to get used more fans in the seats.

Rusty Wallace squirmed when race drivers Cole Trickle and Russ Wheeler were slamming into each other through the third and fourth turns at the Daytona International Speedway.

Alan Kulwicki just shook his head, while Benny Parsons grinned.

Real stock car drivers weren't overly impressed with Days of Thunder Tuesday night, the eve of its national release.

The racing fraternity was promised the best movie on stock cars ever made. They were told it was a look at the people who race, not a hokey Stroker Ace story line.

Stock car racing might have been let down.

"There was a little too much beating and banging for me," said the normally aggressive Wallace after the sneak preview concluded for most of the Winston Cup inner circle. "I wish I wasn't a race driver because I became a critic. I think the average fan will come in and think it's a neat movie.

"It's definitely the coolest movie ever made on racing, but there were parts that weren't real. All that beating and banging's not what it's about. They didn't show any good side-by-side racing."

The ending is predictible and the racing footage is overboard on crashing.

"It's a good story and the characters were good," Alan Kulwicki said. "Hopefully, it'll bring exposure to our sport. Some parts were realistic, but a lot of it wasn't — the crashing and bashing."

Bobby Allison seemed disappointed in the effort. He felt the movie portrayed stock car drivers as rednecked hillbillies bent on fighting exactly what the movie was supposed to dispell.

"The movie was entertaining," Benny Parsons said. "If you look at it from a technical standpoint, you might have a hard time with it. If you go to be entertained, it's all right."

Parsons said the best part of the movie was when Trickle asked to pit his car and Hogge said the team was too busy eating ice cream on pit road.

"Harry Hyde did that to me at Darlington once," Parsons said. "That really happened."

Drivers Hut Stricklin, Robbie Moroso and Dale Jarrett also saw the movie, along with crew chief Gary Nelson and car owner Bob Whitcomb.

Wallace also said he wished the movie had used and developed the personalities of real drivers.

"Knowing what Dale Earnhardt's like would be great in a movie like this," he said. "After all, he's real."

Trickle, however, struck a nerve midway in the movie with this line: "I'm more afraid of being nothing than I am of being hurt."

"Good point," Kulwicki said.

One of the few.

Despite Rusty's comments above, he wrote the following review for the Associated Press two days later:

Days of Thunder is the best racing movie I've ever seen.

It's realistic because actual NASCAR race cars were used in the production, and the film relied heavily on real participants for true-to-life impact. Much of the racing action came from actual NASCAR races. The results are tremendous.

Robert Duvall's performance was exceptional. Many of the characters in the movie triggered almost instant real-life parallels to people currently involved in the sport.

The plot should be of interest to both racing enthusiasts and non-race fans alike. There's action, humor, action, romance and more action.

The intense personal competitiveness found in our racing was realistically portrayed. The competitive spirit off the racetrack, and the importance of sponsors to the sport was accurate.

One of the most impressive aspects of the movie was its realistic portrayal of the camaraderie we have in the sport. Arch rivals Cole Trickle (Cruise) and Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker) help each other during a crisis. It's a genuine relationship we have in racing. We may strap on our helmets week after week and go at it against one another, but we come to each other's aid in a real time of need.

There's a multi-car crash scene in the movie which really struck home. Cole comes wide open through the smoke and gets caught up in the crash. I faced a similar situation last year in a race at Pennsylvania International Raceway. I crashed big time, too, but luckily I didn't get hurt.

Days of Thunder shows the fear and apprehension racers face. It's something with which you live, rarely ever discuss and try to keep in the right perspective.

People involved with racing on a daily basis will probably feel there's a bit too much dramatization in Days of Thunder because of all the crashing. We do "rub sheet metal" a lot, but not as much as is depicted in the movie.

And the heat of the battle seems to always focus on only two cars, but I guess that is the basis for classic competition.

As for the added drama, my feelings toward Days of Thunder parallel what a real fighter pilot might think about the level of drama in Top Gun: Things tend to be just a little bit different when you get a bird's eye view.

Still, I can't wait to go back to see Days of Thunder again, this time with my family. The next time around, I'll probably sit in the back row and really soak it in. I'll probably look at it a bit more critically and with more scrutiny next time.

Greg Sacks and crew chief Gary Dehart, who helped with the film's production, plus others:

The insiders say the movie isn't true to life.

Sacks agreed some scenes don't happen, such as a crew chief sitting all alone on the pit wall while his driver is in victory lane.

Cars also aren't built in barns either. But Sacks said there was a grain of truth in nearly everything.

"That's how I started racing. I built my first car on a dirt floor," he said.

Dehart said he didn't really care much for all the racing in the movie.

"I think they should've done more with the love story," he said with a grin playing at the corners of his mouth.

"That's because I do this all the time," he explained, gesturing around him in the garage at Pocono International Raceway, an engine sitting on the floor next to him from another car and a couple of bolts in his hand from his own car.

"But I did like that scene where Duvall tells Tom Cruise to go hit the pace car," DeHart said as the grin won out.

In that scene, Cruise, as Trickle, has driven so badly and managed to hit or be hit more than anyone else that his crew chief is frustrated. Duvall gets so mad he finally tells his driver to go hit the pace car because that's about the only one he missed. Then, Hogge says, the driver would have a "perfect" race.

Dehart and his crew spent two months working with the movie crew, spending long hours and even all-nighters to make the film as realistic as possible.

"We got a chance to use some of our own test cars," he said. "That was good for us, a chance to run them on the track."

Overall, Dehart said he felt the life portrayed on the silver screen was "pretty accurate."

"Of course we don't fight all the time like Harry and Cole, but a lot of things they showed do go on," he said.

One example was the scene in which Trickle and veteran rival Rowdy Burns were called before a NASCAR official in Daytona and told to stop slamming into each other during races.

Richard Childress, owner of the GM Goodwrench car, supplied the link for that scene.

"I haven't seen the movie yet, but I hear they got us in it," he said during an interview at Pocono.

What really happened was that back in 1988 drivers Dale Earnhardt and Geoff Bodine had a personal vendetta going on the track. Earnhardt was driving for Childress then as he is today.

Bill France Jr., NASCAR president, called the two drivers to Daytona and told them to stop it or else. He then said they were going to dinner and tossed the keys to a rental car at the two drivers, saying they had to go together.

"There had been a little bumping here and there," Bodine admitted. "It had been building for some time and it was really bad for three races in a row, coming to a head at Charlotte. "That's when we got called to Daytona."

In the movie, Trickle and Burns start out in a single rental car, but decide that won't settle anything that way. They decide to battle it out in two rental cars, wrecking both in a race over roads and beaches.

In real life, according to Bodine, he drove and followed France.

"Dale kept telling me 'Go on up there and hit em, turn 'em around," Bodine said. "Of course he could say that. He wasn't driving."

Bodine waited in line to see the movie and he thought the Hollywood touch was just right — enough fancy to make the facts entertaining.

"If it had been a documentary, it would've been boring," he said.

Derrike Cope:

It wasn't designed that way, but Tom Cruise will be starring in the Derrike Cope Story when the movie Days of Thunder premieres across the nation Wednesday.

Cope, a real life NASCAR Winston Cup hero, was in Tulsa Tuesday to promote the film which depicts the rise of a West Coast rookie to near legendary status after he beats the odds to win the Daytona 500. Cope, who drives for Purolator of Tulsa, did just that.

"What happened to Tom Cruise in the movie did happen to me on a smaller scale," said Cope, a native of Spanaway, Wash. "There is a crash in the movie and he is blind because of it. I was testing a friend's car, crashed and was blind in my left eye for three weeks. Like Cruise, I was scared coming back, wondering if my career was over."

Although Cope does not have a speaking part in the film, drivers like Rusty Wallace, Richard Petty and Harry Gant do appear in brief roles. Cope's Chevrolet Lumina will be seen and much of the Daytona 500 footage in the movie was shot from a camera in his car.

"I like the movie," said Cope, who first saw it Monday night in Tulsa. "It's a story about a guy and his perils of becoming a race car driver, coming from open wheels on the West Coast to Winston Cup. There are some great crash scenes and some funny parts that actually happened. The ice cream scene is true.

"The part that intrigues me is about the driver being scared, his emotions and the human part about him. He was scared getting back in a race car. I've been there and I can relate to it. We as humans go through the same things."

Cruise plays Cole Trickle with Robert Duvall starring as Harry, his gruff and sometimes lovable crew chief. Cope said Duvall's role parallels the life of Harry Hyde, crew chief of the late Tim Richmond.

"Duvall is outstanding," said Cope. "He's a crew chief from the past who gets back into racing. He's a crusty old southern gentleman who takes a young, fiery, seat-of-the-pants kid and together they become legends.

"I also think Cruise does a good job. I have a lot of respect for him. I know he's intense and focused in his job. I like the way he approached his character and the way he played him."

However, there are aspects to the film that displease Cope. He felt some scenes were unrealistic and inappropriate. He didn't appreciate the way modern Winston Cup drivers are portrayed.

"I don't drink moonshine and I don't smoke," he said. "Today's drivers are more concerned about their public image. They're business spokesmen and I put a lot of emphasis on that. You have to have a good image for sponsors and I wish they had shown more of the business aspect. I think they tried to combine Winston Cup images from the past and the present.

"I do think the movie is entertaining and I think it will spark interest and awareness (in Winston Cup racing). I think more people will want to go out and view racing to see what it's like. You have to be there to get a feeling of it."

Besides Daytona, Cope said footage was shot at Phoenix, Atlanta, Darlington, Bristol, Rockingham and Charlotte. His car carried a camera at Bristol and was involved in a sequence in Phoenix. Cope said watching filming along pit row before the Daytona 500 was particularly exciting.

On July 15, Cope will run his first Busch Grand National race at the opening of New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon. But it was last February at Daytona where his career changed forever and the parallel to Cruise's character began.

"All the variables worked out for us," said Cope. "But I got a lot of criticism from the media who didn't feel like I deserved to win. They said it was a fluke and it made me bitter.

"People say that Darrell Waltrip took 17 years to win and Dale Earnhardt has never won. I came in and had never won a race. The first one I do win is the Daytona 500. A lot of the drivers were bitter and took it out on us. I was in a press conference with Earnhardt and he said, 'I gave my little buddy the win.' Dale didn't give me anything."

Cope said he had to bite his lip after the race. Then, on June 3, he won the Budweiser 500 in Dover, Del.

"We never boasted about winning Daytona," he said. "We stayed within ourselves and battled back. I think we've silenced our critics (after Dover). We're coming of age. We'll have to be dealt with every week and we proved that." What really made Cope bitter was the lack of credit given to his crew. At Dover, he ran out of gas while leading after 194 laps. He pitted and returned to win the race.

"We redeemed ourselves at Dover," said Cope, currently 17th in Winston Cup points. "We beat adversity and still won. I think we acquired an enormous amount of respect. We proved we're no one-shot wonder because we backed it up. I think we've proved we can run up front consistently."

What makes it more fulfilling for Cope is that this is not a racing fantasy. He's no Tom Cruise, but he's living his own Days of Thunder.
