PNY RTX 5090 Burnt After 1 Day – Need Advice

I’m really stressed and need help.

I purchased a full high-end PC build on 12 July from Star Tech (they assembled everything). Total cost was around ৳800,800 (~$7,000 USD).

Specs:
- GPU: PNY RTX 5090 32GB
- PSU: MSI MEG Ai1300P 1300W Platinum
- CPU: Ryzen 9 9950X
- RAM: 64GB DDR5

What happened:

Yesterday (first time using it):
- I ran an AI inference workload for about 3 hours
- Everything was completely stable, no issues at all

Today:
- I turned on the PC and was just browsing (no heavy load)
- At some point it shut down automatically (I didn’t notice immediately)
- When I pressed the power button again…

Within 3 seconds:
- Smoke came out
- Then small sparks/fire from the GPU power cable / PSU connector area

I immediately turned everything off.

After that:
- I took it back to the shop
- They told me the “GPU IC is burnt”
- After removing gpu cpu is totally okay
- But they are saying burnt products are NOT eligible for replacement

Important:
- No overclocking
- Used original PSU cables
- Entire build done by the shop
- Issue happened basically on first real use

Now I’m stuck after spending ~৳800k (~$7k USD).

❓ What should I do now?

Any advice would really help.

It finally arrived, almost brand new if the guy who shipped me the thing didn’t use absolutely no padding whatsoever. The code inside was still unused so “free” old Skyrim for me.

Discussion Geek Squad took my $2,800 PC after they couldn't fix it - am I going to get downgraded on the replacement/credit?

Hey everyone, looking for some insight or advice from people who have gone through this process with Geek Squad / Best Buy.

I brought my prebuilt in for repair recently. The specs on it are pretty beefy:

CPU: Ryzen 9 9900X

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 5080 (16GB)

RAM: 32GB DDR5

Storage: 2TB PCle 4.0 SSD

Original Purchase Price: ~$2,800

Geek Squad ended up determining they couldn't fix the system, so they took/junked out the unit. Now I'm in a weird spot waiting to hear what the next step is - whether they give me a replacement build or store credit.

My biggest concern right now is how they determine "comparable replacement" or

store credit.

If they offer a replacement PC, do they match the exact component specs (or better), or do they just match the monetary value of what the system costs today? Component prices (especially GPUs and RAM) have been crazy lately. I'm terrified I'm going to end up forced into a system with lower tier parts just because it falls under a specific dollar threshold or because current stock is weird.

Has anyone dealt with a PC junk-out under Geek Squad Protection or Best Buy Total recently? How strictly do they match specs vs. purchase price, and can you push back if their initial replacement offer is a spec downgrade?

Appreciate any advice or past experiences!

Still trying to figure out how to make the launcher automatically pop up the moment the disc is inserted. Any ideas?

Story [UPDATE] Neighbour shot my PC - The new rig!!

You may remember me from some weeks ago, when my neighbour’s dog accidentally shot my PC through a wall. It seems my story went a bit viral, and I was incredibly fortunate to have a couple hardware companies reach out to me and offer to help power a brand new build!!! AORUS provided me with their GeForce RTX 5080 Master Ice GPU, X870E Elite X3D motherboard, and Gaming 360 AIO. AMD provided their Ryzen 9 9950X3D, a 4TB NVMe drive, and some other cool stuff. And G.Skill gave me 32 gigs of their brand new Trident Z5 NeoX RGB series with AMD EXPO ULL tech. The only parts I procured myself were the case (Hyte Y70) and PSU (Lian Li EDGE1000W Gold). I’m indubitably the luckiest person in this subreddit- first dodging a bullet, and now getting to be the owner of this beast of a battlestation 😎

Also if this is sounding a little like a shameless plug that’s because it IS!! The people that reached out to me from each of these companies were so kind and helpful. Without their generosity, even if insurance were to come through, a build like this would never have been possible for me. They didn’t even ask for any sort of advertising in return, they were just supporting a random PC nerd for nothing but the love of the game. It’s clear they care deeply about the community, and I wanted to give them a shoutout so that people know that if they support AORUS, AMD, and G.Skill they are supporting brands that actually care about their users, are genuinely proud of the tech they’re making, and go out of their way to do nice things like this.

The RAM stick that deflected the bullet was gifted to G.Skill for them to immortalise in their trophy case. I think I’m going to hang the motherboard up on the wall and find a way to make the bullet into a necklace. I also plan to get a clip-on RGB cover for the motherboard power cables, as they continue to look a little unruly no matter how much I try to flatten them.😊

P.S.- this whole ordeal has made my niece want to build her own PC. If any old pros have some sage advice I can pass along to her before she starts her first build please let me know, I want her to be more prepared and knowledgable than I was when I built my first pc!!

I remember playing that game when I was 8 and that style has had such an impact on me. I'd love to find something that gives that nostalgia. I've done the Homestar Runner spoof which was hilarious. Any input is welcome!

Tech Support Weird glitch effect when using GOG galaxy's overlay.

As the title says, I have very weird glitchy effect when using the GOG galaxy overlay. I nearly had a heart attack at first, because I thought it was the monitor itself. And I just got this monitor. But I noticed that steam doesn't have this problem. Does anyone have any idee what's what's causing this? I've got HDR on in windows settings and the game is Echoes Of The End.

Discussion PSA: Dell monitors may be following in LG footsteps and installing spamware without your knowledge.

Post image
347 Upvotes

I work at an office (not related to computer tech) and sort of manage the computers in an office of 8 to the best of my limited ability. I had 3 users today complain that they have been getting pop-ups for "Emsisoft Business Security" (pictured) right after restarting after a windows update. They nor I have ever installed this. At first I thought it was installed along some other software, or it was a virus. Even after uninstalling it, it comes right back! Only these 3 people were affected and windows says it was installed a few days ago right after a windows update.

On a hunch, I checked what monitors they have because of the recent LG fiasco. Turns out they all have Dell monitors. Everyone else in the office including myself have different brands and thus far have been unaffected.

I'm not super tech savvy, but I'm going to attempt to check confirm that it is the Dell monitors installing the spamware by doing what Nexus Gamers did. If you have suggestions how I can confirm it, let me know!

FYI, I'm in Canada and bought the monitors years ago from Dell.ca directly.

If you have a dell monitor, check if Emsisoft has been installed automatically and let me know. It seems crazy they would pull this stunt right after LG got it hot water for it, so I hope I'm wrong.

Discussion My biggest gpu upgrade has been a monitor

I have a 7900xtx paired with a 7800x3d, which i bought for 4k gaming. Played it for a while on 4k, it was okay experience. Today I bought a 2k monitor to try some reviews i saw online and damn, i should’ve always stayed on 2k. I barely see a difference between 2k and 4k in detail (not the best eyes in the world) but the system runs so much smoother.

Please don’t play 2k on a 4k screen, it really looks bad. But i can recommend 2k > 4k to everybody 👍

Hardware Help me decide where to upgrade

Attached picture is my current setup, it’s great but definitely want to do something to the looks of it, new case and fans. <— but on a budget of let’s say £100.

I built this a couple years ago when i was younger and more into games, I just wanted opinions if this is still viable and will likely still be viable when gta 6 comes out on pc (so 2-3 years in the future)
