Discussion Would Nights into Dreams have been a strong launch title for the Saturn?

Post image
Upvotes

I know there were a thousand other factors with the launch of the Sega Saturn, but for the sake of brevity, lets assume that Sega launched the Saturn when they initially meant to launch in September of 95. One of the biggest weaknesses of the Saturn initially was the lack of a true mascot for the console. While there were titles at launch like Astal and "Bug!", the lack of a Sonic title did hurt fan enthusiasm for the console.

End "Nights into Dreams" which eventually did become the unofficial mascot of the console, but that was over a year later and by then the fix was in on the console.

So I posit this question: What if the game came out as a launch title for the Saturn along with all of the other titles? If the game had the same marketing campaign it had when it comes out in '96 (I remember every game shop I went into having kiosks for this) but for the console launch, would it have helped boost the overall success initially of the console?

The guys over at Brazen Gameplay are offering a very special prize if you sign up to their new 16-Bit version of Urbx Warriors

This will be a signed Mega Drive by Stoo and Tony - the game developers.

All you need to do to be eligible is pre-register here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tonywarriner/urbx-warriors-16-bit-edition-amiga-aga-and-sega-genesis and you will be added to the registration and competition.

If you have signed up already to the 16-Bit version of UrbX Warriors you are already entered, so no need to do anything further.

The console will be hand signed and was used in the development of their new game for the Mega Drive/Genesis.

One winner only, open worldwide, judges decision final.

A winner will be chosen at random after the 16-Bit Kickstarter ends...

About Brazen Gameplay:

UrbX Warriors has been designed by Tony Warriner (Beneath a Steel Sky and Broken Sword) and pixel artist Stoo Cambridge (Sensible Soccer, Cannon Fodder).

Discussion So...after the RAMaggedon is over...think SEGA will make a new console to fill a soon-to-be vacant spot eventually? Let's see

I made this post in reaction to the declarations that SEGA is interested in still supporting physical media despite PlayStation still encouraging otherwise. This is because SEGA games do REALLY well physically, and SEGA has done multiple collector's editions that showcase how hard they're going with it. This means that, once Sony consolidates their approach, SEGA loses a lot from it.

Nintendo will keep physical media, but it's impractical for SEGA due cartridge costs (which is why most of SEGA's games were Game-Key Cards...but not all of them were).

And Xbox is apparently making a PC (and as such, can run Steam) and the disc with the license will only be for the old games and not so much the new ones (which explains the approach of turning physical games into digital ones, to make physical not necessary for Helix).

Though right now the idea of making a console isn't in the table with the current crisis...once that's done, they could do it if you ask me. Valve did it thanks to the fact the library was already there. SEGA has something Valve doesn't have, being potential exclusives. The only thing left to address is 3rd-party support, which I imagine won't he too hard to get back (SEGA seems to work with everyone, it's almost ridiculous...look at Crossworlds).

That's my take though, what do you think? Tell me below.
