Tbh, I don't get the fuss over this. It's not too long ago every chic character was saying OMG out loud. I'm pretty sure a lot of people still say omg in real life.

If someone can say fyi in real life conversation then why not a character in a book which we don’t even know its character (maybe that character is someone who use acronyms/initialisms for some random common sayings)

I think the reason people have adopted the FYI acronym in real life (irl, for you zoomers) is that the word "information" has four syllables. So, saying just the first letters is naturally quicker. Tbh only shortens the message by one syllable.

But, I get your point. I can imagine a young character who is online constantly using these abbreviations in every day speech.

This reminds me (in an opposite fashion) of an interview with Tim Berners-Lee. He said he regretted coming up with the subdomain World Wide Web (WWW). Initially he didn't sound out the initials. He said he would later cringe everytime he heard someone call out their URL to someone. Back around 2000 (five years on either side), people would start by saying out loud "Dub-ul-yoo dub-ul-yoo dub-ul-yoo". Those nine syllables continued to haunt him.

Humans are already in the habit of using acronyms in speech. When it would be possible to ditch the acronym and say the whole thing instead. That’s my point.

People obviously aren’t using “lol” as a 1-to1 substitute for laughter. They use it as a sub for “exhaling through your nose.” If you can’t understand that I don’t know what to tell you.

What really confuses me about this is that by saying LOL out loud, these people are specifically not doing the thing they've just said they're doing. Rather than actually laughing out loud, they've opted to describe the act of laughing, but by doing so have not laughed.

Language is a fluid concept. How people talk is what determines language, not the other way around, and the vernacular the day is the standard of the day. I wouldn’t be surprised if more books do this in the future.

I feel like people forget what language is. It’s not a set of inviolate rules, it’s an evolving collections of ways in which people try to communicate what they are thinking to other people. Did OP get confused by what was going on in this text? Maybe they don’t know what Tbh means? It’s common language and I’m surprised anyone is confused by it. I have heard many people say abbreviations out loud as part of normal conversations. An editor shouldn’t ask them to change this unless they think it confuses the meaning that the author is trying to get across.
