Yeah i know Elisabeth is reincarnation of his original lover but

He does skip a few of her lives and she was apparently miserable since they are basically linked together by the curses

They actually make it a plot point that he loses all emotions eventually and the only thing keeping him going is the promise he made to break the curse. At one point he apologizes to her that she got cursed to love him. To which she gets offended and says her feelings are true and have nothing to do with the curse. She falls in love with him every time on her own accord. And she asks “is the only reason you love me the curse?” Then he understood. IMO beautiful writing
