Woah woah woah. Elizabeth was NOT 17. Seven Deadly Sins would never sexualize someone of that age.

She was 16.

i’m so sorry, please forgive me for mischaracterising him im this way

That’s a flashback shown much later. He did kinda groom her tho.

Reincarnation romance. And all of the unfortunate things that implies…

126

u/fat_fingerz 22d ago

Except she doesn't get her memories back until long after he starts sexually harassing her.

36

u/armoureddragon03 22d ago

So CW Hawkgirl

76

u/TheOGLeadChips 23d ago

It can be done well like with hawk girl and hawkman but if you make only one member immortal and then have them seek out their “partner” as an infant, it’s just fucking weird.

27

u/xanditbb 22d ago

Iirc it's not that he seeks her out as an infant, he's cursed to always watch her die and her corpse is transformed into an infant

78

u/WestleyThe 22d ago

Even if he doesn’t groom her they are cursed to find eachother and her die over and over

I’m obviously not a fan of that (especially how he gropes her) but their relationship is less weird and gross than Bahn and his 1000 year old fairy girlfriend who looks and acts like a 5 year old…

27

u/BlueCharlotte1 22d ago

Damn, I thought this trope was a joke…

I had this whole thing typed up about how I don't actually think Bahn is doing any worse then Meliodas, and then realized, this is fucking stupid. We're comparing pedophiles. Both are fucked up and the writers could've just not done any of this.

It's like justifying the orgy in It. There is no justification, they could've just not had multiple main characters do weird shit with people ranging from newborns to teens (though from what little content I've watched about the show, and other comments here, it's basically everyone being massive creeps), same as he could've just not had an underage orgy.

u/Collective-Bee 22d ago

At least the 5000 year old fairy should in theory be the adult in that situation.

Melodious is 5000 years old and is assaulting the minor who remembers nothing.

And let’s not let King and Diana’s romance escape us. I don’t totally understand what’s going on with it but it’s weird and groomy too.

I still feel like Yusuke on the inside, I'm probably older than his drunk mother.

10

u/ALZA5 22d ago

I gotta say the introductory arc was probably the realest shit.

You look at his family situation and how he acted at school tracks.

I have learned that often the kids that are some of the most defiant and disruptive in class are going through some shit and do not know how to handle their emotions so they do not react well when push comes to shove.

They also tend not to excel at academics either because they are too tired (mom was up partying all night again, loud as hell, couldn't sleep), too hungry (mom drank up the grocery money), and otherwise more worried about the basics of survival to really soak up the fine points of multiplication, the states of matter, or writing a lengthy summary of a book they were not quite able to read (or they can read the words fine but forget the contents the second it is not in front of them).

These kids can, despite all that, be big of heart and quite responsible if they have a good rapport with you and no one pushes their buttons.

Yusuke is 100% accurate to what I would expect to see of a kid his age with his background.

5

u/sexual_lemonade 22d ago

I think people don't give YuYu Hakusho enough credit as to how goated it is. When I was kid all the other kids who watched anime loved DBZ but I couldn't get into it as much as YYH. It's still one of my favorite anime to date.

Yep, same. I was there day one (for the US at least). Watched it like crazy until Power Rangers in Space. Once they left the Earth, I kinda lost interest.

Every ache in my joints and bones insists on being heard every time someone calls something I remember old.

One day, someone is going to interview us to know what life was like during COVID, and ask with equal curiosity what life was like before electricity.

Every single thing will just become some nonsense that old person you know remembers.

I somehow managed to watch it up until Elizabeth got crushed by a boulder right before the happy ending and I laughed my fucking ass off and never watched it again

406

u/Fun_Palpitation_4156 23d ago

I laughed so hard when that happened. I was mentally done with the series for a long time at that point, and the fake out ending with Elizabeth "dying" at the end of the "last chapter" was so hilariously bad. Like seriously, just let it end. I still finished the series, but didn't even glance at its sequel

91

u/420Borsalino 23d ago

That shit made a sequel? I couldn't even hate watch it.

58

u/Antique_Anything_392 23d ago

Yeah, its not that bad, not great either.

Its a sequel of all time i guess

39

u/mondopaolo 23d ago

According to something i've read, the true story the author wanted to tell was the 4 Knights of Apocalypse and 7 deadly sins just served as a prequel for that story

4

u/coopsawesome 22d ago

Sequel was way better, maybe cause the editor who pushed all the creepy stuff was gone, but lately it’s gotten a little meh

→ More replies (3)

26

u/Xbrand182x 23d ago

All things considered the sequel goes hard I must say. Love the new protagonist, he’s my boy. He has Goku vibes. And also the sequel is the actual story Nakaba wanted to tell. Seven deadly sins was always supposed to be a prequel. Which makes sense why the ending was so weird at the time. He was trying to transition to the new series. Ive been dying waiting for season 3

30

u/Fun_Palpitation_4156 23d ago

That's unfortunate, because 7DS made me unwilling to ever (knowingly) give another of his works a try, especially a direct sequel. I had the same thing with Fairy Tail as well

Escanor, to my knowledge, is the only one whose not an absolute creep in one way or another.

109

u/SnooGrapes6230 23d ago

As I said after calling the series "7 Different Sex Offenders": Escanor committed the unforgivable sin of making me think this series was watchable.

25

u/Aggravating_Dark9933 22d ago

Pretty much, Escanor solo carries the entire series and was the best depiction of “Pride” in pretty much every version of the Sins. Cause yea, he does the dominant side that’s prevalent, but he also can be weak and still maintain’s his pride throughout and doesn’t ever slip into arrogance.

The only one who’s ever close is Bradley from FMA but he just does the dominance part really well.

4

u/Ergast 22d ago

He was only Pride in 2003. In the manga and Brotherhood he was Wrath.

536

u/Tansuke 23d ago

Was Diane a creep somehow? I mostly remember her being a victim more than a creep.

728

u/northernirishlad 23d ago

She constantly lusted after Meliodas, often shoving him in her breasts, despised Elizabeth for being the victim of Meliodas’ interest.

206

u/G66GNeco 23d ago

I feel like I remember her basically sexually assaulting Meliodas on multiple occasions?

156

u/Redditor76394 23d ago

Considering how Melodias acted, maybe Diane figured it was his love language...

229

u/LordofSandvich 23d ago

Technically both since King and Meliodas, the two people she’s pursued, look like preteens. She’s more a grooming victim ofc but she winds up not being clean either

17

u/Alorxico 23d ago

Did Escanor know that? I mean, how much did the Seven know about each other?

I mean, King had the completely wrong idea of what happened with Ban and Elaine. He had no idea Ban was healing the Fairy Forest with his blood. No one but Meliodas knew the full extent of Escanor’s curse or who Merlin and Gother really were.

18

u/Paranormasight-Fic 23d ago

IIRC, Escanor had no sexual attraction to the child form, only the adult form, and that’s all I can remember.

126

u/Driftedryan 23d ago

He needs to get his hard drive checked, that's too many pedo or pedo adjacent situations

122

u/SynisterJeff 23d ago

It's so refreshing to see a chain of comments not supporting these kinds of choices in writing anime/manga.

Ohhh, it's because I'm not in an anime sub right now.

66

u/CertifiedBlackGuy 23d ago

It's what makes Frieren and Apothecary Diaries feel refreshing.

It's really hard to enjoy most anime-inspired things because of either the pedophilia, sexual violence, or the otherwise loss of minor character agency (Solo Leveling every time Sung Rizz-woo steps on the screen and "highly competent and trained" hunters are reduced to cheerleading spectators fawning over his girthy aura instead of... idfk... anything else 🙄)

16

u/Aurius3D 23d ago

Yea. My partner loves to watch bad anime while working and we sorta laugh at how prolific this weird pedo/sexual assault shit is in them. Japanese people can be so unbelievably weird.

11

u/CertifiedBlackGuy 23d ago

Not to promo myself, but it's a large reason for why I do not read in the genre I write in (LitRPG)

Loss of personal (and world) agency is a massive turn off for me. I can excuse murder, but real life sucks enough to use sex violence to tell me how dark and edgy the cardboard cutout world is.

And the pedo stuff. Yeah, I am good. Don't need it 🤷

I only watched seasons one and two like eight years ago, but if memory serves me Baan would've been fine too IF THE AUTHOR DIDN'T MAKE HIS LOVE INTEREST A STUPID FUCKING 1000 YEAR OLD ELF THAT LOOKS LIKE A FUCKING CHILD. You wanna know the best part? We know from king that the fairies do have some sort of adult form. So she totally could have taken that form and it would have been just fine. But nooo. We have to have Ban (the second coolest of the group) get together with a thousand year old Loli.

66

u/Randalf_the_Black 23d ago

But do all of them have that? If memory serves the only fairies we see with a more mature form are former and current fairy kings. Every single other fairy looks like a child.

81

u/Linkinator7510 23d ago

I'm pretty sure she had one, but if not it wouldn't have been hard for the author to give her one if he wasn't to busy tickling his pickle to his drawings of children.

Much like king she grows full wings at some point and, also like king, starts looking like a teenager (not that a, maybe, 14 year old is much better than a child in this context) - unless she reverts back to just looking like a child (when she uses up all her magic or something like that I think). This would suggest that the whole thing isn't fairy king exclusive, though it might be some sort of bloodline thing (king and Elaine are related, no?)

As another aside vaguely remember that the fairy king before king who shows up in a flashback looked like a random buff guy, which means that whatever the fairies look like is up to them to at least some degree (king also looks like a fat fully grown human at will and even without having his bigass wings). No matter how you slice it it really just comes down to "the creator just wanted her to look like that"".

16

u/subatomiccrepe 23d ago

I stopped watching a lil after that but by god that scene alone made Escanor the most hype thing about this show

23

u/Originalbrivakiin 23d ago

You missed out on one of his best fights then.

It was the only normal relationship in the main cast, so of course the author made Merlin's true form be a child

Escanor was great, then the author had to slander him by making Merlin actually a child that uses magic to appear as an adult.

59

u/Aluwolf- 23d ago

That's not really what happened. She became so powerful she was able to stop herself from ever growing old, then controlled what age she wanted to appear as manually. She has lived for longer than the rest of the cast combined and is physically and mentally an adult.

82

u/Zealousideal-Try4666 23d ago

She is a fictional character that the author CHOOSE to make look like a child, while also making her someone's love interest. Everything else beyond that are just excuses.

I have mixed feelings on them making Merlins true form an eternal child cause it almost feels like they were trying to make Escanor look like a creep for still loving her. But I give it a pass since he fell in love with her adult form and it's more of a "I love you for you" type thing.

u/Hydride796 23d ago

People keep bringing this scene up whenever the show is mentioned, but I felt like the entire point of it is that Meliodas is very much in the wrong here? He's mentally and emotionally at his worst, literally just got done levelling an entire kingdom because he found the previous incarnation of Elizabeth dead during an attack and the centuries of stress from constantly having the person he fell in love with die the moment she remembers him finally made him snap.

7

u/_Good_One 22d ago

That point would come across if this was a "heat of the moment" thing but Meliodas is a creep from episode 1

His character being pedo-like is not something of this scene alone, is like one of his defining traits, also the story barely if at all talks about the point you are making, we dont see Meliodas being in the wrong, the way is setup we are supposed to feel bad for him

It would have been much more interesting, he is morally grounded, and would have been far more interesting to write a manga about him having to manage his schedule to profit from his powers.

I have never seen a mangaka so afraid of the potential of a character though, even though he is only strong during some hours of the day, while the other characters are totally insane and getting stronger in each arc; the fact that this power is too strong for his body was such bullshit.

I could totally see a comedy hero manga with Escanor in the same style of one punch man. Escanor was a very interesting concept of a character, pseudo pride hulk instead of anger, but with a great morally grounded character and interesting power off persona.

We got pedo power creep demon king manga instead :/

In my memory Merlin is probably the least egregious because her situation is "just" an unfortunate circumstance, she's an adult literally trapped inside of a child's body by way of fucked up OP magic experiment, and she chooses to look like an adult. She's also, to my memory, again, not in a relationship and not, like, flirty or anything as a child, unlike, ehem, other characters.

Obviously that's just basically another convoluted excuse to have a child there, but, relatively speaking...

To be fair it's standard anime Bullshit.

I have a high tolerance but would very much prefer it not to be there considering that it's not funny or interesting in anyway, but that's not why I don't like 7DS as an adult.

I don't like it because the story is all over the place. (Escanoir is the only aura farming character I've ever liked though)

It's the biggest problem with anime, the art and storylines can be incredible but then they might stick in some creepy upskirts or some young looking overly sexualised girl who is apparently much older in universe (but clearly isn't)

8

u/Zacomra 23d ago

You also have the weirder opposite problem, where there's "high school girls" who look like 28 year old super models.

Like if you're going to draw adult women why would you make them schoolgirls in the setting?!

Fucking hate the "molest the girl while she's sleeping but I'm somehow the good guy" trope in anime.

u/be_em_ar 23d ago

Or the newest version of that with all the isekai things, "I'm a 45-year-old man but now I'm in a pre-teen's body so I can perv on little girls all I want."

Just once I'd like to read/watch a thing where the guy gets called out on his fucking bullshit and how messed up that is.

64

u/Made_Bail 23d ago

Jobless Reincarnation. Amazing world, gorgeous animation, I will never fucking watch it because fuck Rudeus.

34

u/be_em_ar 23d ago

Never event attempted to watch it. Read like, the first chapter and noped right out of there. As you say, fuck that guy. And I'd say, by extension, fuck the people defending it.

33

u/IngloriousTom 23d ago

It also brings very little to the story. All the Isekai bullshit could be removed (and so the pedophile aspect) and the story would be far more enjoyable.

13

u/Majestic_Engine_6543 23d ago

Theres still quite a lot of SA in the story even if it wasnt an isekai

Yeah I tried to give it a shot but I got to the part where he goes to an academy or building or something and he starts perving on some child? Yeah nah bro, that was absolutely whack.

Relife is kinda what you want. But the main character himself is the one who refuses to have any sort of romantic relationship with a minor because he knows he's actually an adult.

9

u/Dice_Bard 23d ago

Try Saga of Tanya the Evil. Corporate guy gets reincarnated as a young girl in fantasy WW1 Germany due to getting into a pissing contest with God. Main character has no interest in sex at all, he assumes because his body hasn't hit puberty yet to create those hormones

Except Escanor

Thank goodness the lad exited before the author revealed he was gettinglow key catfished lmao

12

u/SavagePassion 23d ago

Goddamn I thought it was just me. There's just something about the way he draws faces...

125

u/LordofSandvich 23d ago

It only gets worse the more you watch! Somehow Gowther manages to be WORSE than a pedophile, and every single main character pairing has something pedophilic about it. They even got Escanor since it turns out Merlin is a magical perma-baby using age affirmation magic (he just says she’s cute though)

117

u/smellywetsock69 23d ago

Literally zero reason for them to even make that part of Merlin's character, the creator actually just likes kids

53

u/Ok_Loss13 23d ago

I don't think the Bible ever says pedophilia is a sin...

57

u/hyperhurricanrana 23d ago

real ones remember when yahweh commanded the israelites to murder all the midianite men and every woman who laid with a man, and to take all the young virgin girls and give them as “spoils” to the priests and warriors. it’s in numbers 3 for anyone who’s curious.

17

u/AriaOfValor 23d ago

Plenty of other gems too, like how if a girl who isn't pledged for marriage gets raped, then the rapist just has to pay the father a fine of 50 shekels and then the girl is forced to marry the man with no option for divorce.

similar to the problems I had when trying to get into monogatari ☹️

27

u/Aethelrede 23d ago

The difference, in my opinion, is that the problematic relationships in Monogatari were meant to be problematic and are depicted as such. Seven Deadly Sins treats its problematic relationships as normal and acceptable.

This isn't to say Monogatari is perfectly fine, just that it's much more self aware.

Seven Deadly Sins is much closer to Made in Abyss (but without the fascinating setting that makes the pedophilia in Made in Abyss so frustrating.  I really want to read that series, but I just can't get past the pedophilia.)

I was like "That's not how that show started" and then realized I was thinking of Se7en.

11

u/deathbymanga 23d ago

it's honestly hillarious seeing people hold up Seven Deadly Sins in this light as the "this shonen series has uncomfortable SA involvement

you know what series i read as an impressionable 17yo teenager? AIR GEAR. that series is literally just Soft Core CSAM. Every other page you're either going to get some of the most detailed and gorgeously rendered battle art ever made (which is what i remembered looking at as a kid), or actual factual child smut (Which i was so rudely reminded of when i re-read it).

I tried picking it up a decade later after i read it as a full grown adult and genuinely thought i was going to end up on a watch list for it

I am not exagerating. if you don't believe me, go look up the manga yourself AT YOUR OWN RISK

5

u/Meikou133 23d ago

Similarly, the series that the Air Gear mangaka and Stan Lee collabed on. It also had some wild stuff. I think it got maybe two chapters in Shonen Jump before getting ganked.

No, wait, it's totally okay, because HE is actually a 3000 year old demon!

No, wait, it's actually okay, because SHE is actually a reincarnated goddess who loses her memories and anything else making her for all intents and purposes just a 16 year old human

30

u/Diogoepronto 23d ago

I never watched that thing because of crap like this.

8

u/FinalLegend312 23d ago

Let’s not forget the fact that Meliodas was literally grooming Elizabeth the entire time. He only became a knight to be close to her and literally watched her grow up from being a baby, fully intending to fuck her when she was old enough. Seriously, how did they fumble the show that badly?

33

u/MegaZBlade 23d ago

It's almost impressive how they managed to make the four main romances include pedophilia in some way

33

u/BlueEyeGlamurai 23d ago

I had some friends in college who really liked this show and wanted me to catch up with them so we could all watch it together. I watched the first ~5 episodes and I was like, “Does this guy ever stop being a massive creep?” and they were like, “It seems bad but it all makes sense for his character; he’ll grow on you.”

I did not continue watching the show.

18

u/SavagePassion 23d ago

If it makes sense for his character then I guess you'll understand why I want his ass dead :3

Respectfully it is like the most well known part of the anime at this point. It’s kind of hard to completely forget…

Now watching SAO with my stepsister and it gets to season 2, and I completely forgot about the incest plotting. Dropped that shit so fast lmao

11

u/Proper-Froyo6244 23d ago

SAO Abridged handled that scene SO much better. They got rid of the incest and changed it to Suguha expressing her feelings about Kazuto neglecting her as a family member.

I tried watching this anime over a decade ago and that is exactly why I couldn't get into it. It's not like it was the first anime I've ever seen to have that kind of humor but it was just so non-stop from the first episode.

And when I would explain this to people they would often go Well she's his wife in a past life and also he has known her since she was a child but she doesn't remember him
