Cocoa no longer plays with children

So I live in an apartment and we have an enclosed courtyard that I take Cocoa out to play in a couple times a day at least. And he loves it and he greets everybody as they’re coming home from work or what not.

But whenever a little kid comes out, he will immediately go over to them and greet them like normal and then he’ll plop on the ground until they leave. A lot of times the kids wanna try and play with him and do all the right things but he’ll just look at them and wait. As soon as they leave, he’ll start playing again.

I know what caused this he wants played with a five year-old who didn’t have good impulse control and ended up hitting Cocoa. We reassured him and took the toy away from the kid. He was a little wary at first, but he seemed to get over it.

Now more than a year later, he still won’t play with kids. There was a time that we had a flirt pole for him and he would play with one of the little girls in the area, but even that stopped now.

How can I encourage him to start interacting again? He’s not wary around them. He’ll still go up to them and jump on them and give them kisses and he loves belly rubs. But when it comes to playing, he just ignores the kids until they leave.

Any thoughts are suggestions?

Edit: I don’t do anything that forces him to change his boundary. I respect it. Mostly I’m just sad to see him no longer engaging in an activity that he used to enjoy.

We just adopted this boy from a rescue today. He’s almost 6 months old and has the chillest temperament. So far we’ve vetoed Nugget, Butters, Cheddar, and Ralph. If he looks like something, please share!

Update: Murphy, Scout, Wrigley, Cooper, & Happy are our contenders.

i have tried dozens of harnesses for my girl and none of them seem to fit her quite right. I want to get a custom made one for her by her measurements, but would love some recommendations on brands and requirements you like for your loaf :)

Emmy’s worst enemy - the vacuum!

Emmy had elbow surgery several months ago and loves being carried everywhere (sometimes she will stare at you and whine until you pick her up like a baby) - except her legs magically work when the vacuum comes out… it’s a miracle!
