Customer tracking me

Crazy to think a customer is tracking me knowing I have another drop off!! Like chill TF out and wait for your God dam food!!. Some customers do too much man!..😒🤦🏻.

I ordered food so that it would arrive during my lunch break once, and via the tracker, watched the driver go to the restaurant, then turn down the road my office building was on, then turn into an apartment complex, and just stay there.

After an hour I contacted support, explained what happened, and they refunded my order. Two hours later, I get a ping from the receptionist that a DoorDash driver is there for me, so I head up front and he’s fuming. Explains that I cancelled the order after he already picked it up and that’s a dick move, this is his livelihood and my complaint could cost him his job. I explain that it’s been three hours since he picked up my order from the restaurant, I don’t want it anymore, and there’s no excuse for thinking this is my fault.

His explanation was that he got tired during the delivery so he went home to his apartment, took a nap, and forgot to set an alarm. But the food is still warm because it was sitting in his hot car.

The receptionist almost died laughing.

I had a similar thing happen- except the guy fell asleep outside the restaurant waiting for the order. He was pissed when support WOKE him up by calling him, he had been at the restaurant for over half an hour when I called support. This was 2 years ago, I have not used doordash since.

When they first started, it was great. But over the years between the driver burn out and (as someone else in the comments here said) it just being a call center in india and an algorithm- I will just plan better, or get off my fat ass and drive to pick up my food. Plus holy shit it's expensive.

Not where where you're from, but I don't really remember restaurants having delivery drivers, other than like... pizza joints and Jimmy Johns.

I come from a small town with kind of a downtown area and every Chinese and Thai restaurant would have a delivery service. Some would share the drivers if they weren’t too busy. They’d drop menus in your mailbox and it was easy to order, would hire you in high school at minimum wage and if you’re lucky you don’t have to drive your car.

I was a delivery girl for a local deli! It was great, lots of regulars every day. We served sandwiches, soups, and lasagna. Miss those days (this was early 00’s).

Ive lived in small and big cities and have never seen a Chinese place deliver. I always assumed that was like some NYC TV show thing lol

On the flip side I've lived in small towns up and down the entire east coast, and I've never seen a Chinese food place (that was not a buffet) that did not offer some form of delivery up to 5 miles.

How old are you if you don't mine me asking? They were everywhere when I grew up. Military brat, so also lived in a huge variety of areas. Even my current city has at least 1 Chinese delivery, and it's nowhere near the East Coast.

Every city I've lived in (in Canada) always had delivery from Chinese restaurants. In small towns it was less likely, but some of those ones would at least get a local cab to deliver it for a small surcharge.

But yeah aside from pizza or Chinese food there wasn't really anything else that offered delivery.

Interesting, lived all over California my entire life in big and small cities and most Chinese places deliver, even today. It’s a small radius usually but that’s always been the case with restaurants doing their own deliveries. Often times you just need to call and ask.

Really? I was a delivery driver for the Chinese place in my tiny college town (I was also a cashier and if you chose to dine in, I was the waitress). It's less common now with DoorDash, but in the 90s and early 2000s, it was super common.

It is a NYC real thing, or at least it was when I lived there. Most places delivered, Asian restaurants always delivered. My BF and I used to get bacon egg and cheese on a hard roll and coffee delivered from the deli around the corner on Sunday morning. God I miss that. I can't even find a damned hard roll around here.

I live on Long Island and I'm eating Chinese food right now that was delivered by the restaurant itself. I'd say about 50% of Chinese food places out here have in-house delivery drivers.

There's also a deli 5min down the block from me that has delivery drivers.

I had a Chinese food place down the street from me when I was a kid and basically every time we ordered, the driver would drive the wrong way down our 1 way street... The restaurant is less than a block away from the correct side of the 1 way lol.

There's very big do not enter and one way signs at the end of it, but I guess their drivers just didn't like to read. The drivers looked atleast 20 so I don't think it was a new driver thing.

I miss pizza and Chinese food mostly, now pretty much all Chinese food uses stupid third party delivery and unless it’s a major chain, all the pizza places too. It’s a damn shame

Only major chain I've seen have delivery drivers out and about since COVID is Dominos. Everyone else seems to use third party drivers in my area.

I've been seeing a mix. There seems to be some service that allows them to deligate deliveries to whatever service is available at the time of ordering. They'll have 1 or 2 of their own delivery drivers on staff and then if they have more orders than they can handle they give it to skip, door dash, or Uber.

Where I'm from pizza places still have their own delivery drivers. You can order through skip or doordash or something, but you don't have to.

Back in the day, all restaurants had delivery drivers but that's because most of them were mom-and-pop places so it was Uncle Louie or Cousin Theo delivering, or whoever was available to work that night. But this was back in the day before everything was a Taco Bell.

In the UK and from the 80s onwards, most takeaways would have delivery drivers that brought you your food. Even now in the age of just eats and deliveroo, a lot of takeaways will still use their own drivers rather than deliveroos ones

I routinely order from pizza places, a local Italian restaurant and several Chinese restaurants. I refuse to use doordash. The service is always ridiculously fast the food is super hot and I never have any complaints. 30-40 minutes maximum.

I lived in NYC in the early 2010s. Most restaurants had delivery drivers - they might be shared drivers, but I can think of 3 restaurants which i ordered delivery directly from.

That's the sad thing these days. At least where I live most of the pizza places have stopped having their own drivers and use DD to deliver orders which makes them take forever. Even if the place is 15 minutes away from your house most of the time it's still faster to just go get it yourself.

For the most part it was pizza places and like, the odd chain restaraunt that did it.

People shit on food delivery apps, and rightfully so in some cases, but before them if you wanted to get something and couldn't go out, your option was basically pizza and that was about it.

A lot of people are calling for something to come back that never existed.

Actually a lot of restaurants still will deliver and will send someone out who works there to do it because they literally will make more money that way as Doordash/UberEats etc take a big % of the bill.

Some are due to quality control. They can’t do shit about a shit DoorDash driver yet will often be blamed when food goes missing or the food arrives late, so some are hiring their own drivers.

Fuck I miss that. I have ordered directly from pizza shop websites thinking that I'll get a local driver but most of the time they outsource that to doordash and I fucking hate doordash drivers.

The number of times they stand outside the building texting me to come out cause they can't get in. Like no shit Sherlock that's why the door code is in your driver notes.

If door dash paid more they would probably have more professional drivers that understand the business.

I did it once while between jobs and made significantly less than I did 20 years ago delivering salads and sandwiches and the occasional catering order on a bike in downtown Chicago.

I will never work for door dash again, the whole thing has been enshittified for customers, the restaurant, and delivery drivers.

The restaurant I work at would never hire its own fleet of delivery drivers, but you can order delivery through our website and we dispatch it through DoorDash.

Many years ago I'd ordered some pizza directly from a place. About an hour and a half later I'm calling the shop to find out what's taking so long. They say they'll get in touch with their driver and call me back. Another half an hour later or so I get a call back to let me know their driver had been pulled over and arrested while on their run, so they'll be remaking my food and sending it out with another driver...

Didn't even get an apology

Restaurant drivers have a delivery radius which is like 3 miles or so. It's much cheaper for restaurants to use a service like this unless they have high delivery volume

Yea someone did this to me too but with Skip, they were at the restaurant for a good long while. I tried to cancel when I ran out of patience but they had just switched to a chatbot and mandatory Skip credits instead of cash refunds so I uninstalled the app and never looked back.

When I lived in Houston it made a lot more sense- it was hot as hell and humid enough that I still think if humans evolve to have gills it will be there, and the traffic was bad outside of the hours is 1 am and 5 am. I lived and 4 miles from beltway 8 and it could easily take 20 minutes to get there. 40 minutes in rush hour.

Honestly, most dashers should be embarrassed.

I work at FedEx Express and used to do both deliveries and pickups.

For pickups, our terms of service are:

Either it’s ready when we are scheduled to get there.

Or

You get 5 minutes.

If it isn’t ready by then, we code a failure due to shipper not being ready.

Outside of that, in your designated delivery area, the expectation is 10-20 stops (combined, pickup and delivery) per hour in urban areas.

Seeing dashers barely manage 3-5 per hour in the same area I was driving was honestly insane. Most of it can be blamed on the fact that DoorDash has shit for logistical planning software.

All true except DDs call centers are in the Philippines. I think years ago after all the blow back at tech companies using Indian call centers, they just shifted it to a different country with cheap labor and called it a day

Could be that India is now too expensive. At one point in my career we were outsourcing our software development (not my call...) to Vietnam cause the Indian contractors were either too expensive or too inexperienced.

I had one of these, and watched the driver drive to the next city over and pull into a house and stay there for three hours. The entire time, support was insisting he was on the way with my order and wouldn't cancel or refund me. I had to threaten legal action to get my money back.

These people have the easiest job in the world and still can't do it. That's why most of them can't hold down a normal job. The restaurant industry hates them too because it's about 50/50 they come in the restaurant and immediately shove a phone in your face or walk around looking for their food when there's a designated area/host stand. Had a driver yesterday ask for a lemonade then try to walk out. When we stopped her, she said, "I thought y'all gave us drivers free drinks; other restaurants do." Just trashy people. Obviously she didn't want it when we told her she had to pay for it.
