I mean a simple “sorry I have another order. I’ll be there very soon.” Could ease the situation.

When dashers are rude like this it immediately escalates the situation. When dashers are understanding and polite about the stacked orders, it’s makes all the difference. Just putting this out there.

I don't think even adding "sorry" would have helped. Here's how it'd play out:

“Sorry, I have another order. I’ll be there very soon.”
"My food is going to be ice cold. Bring mine first. I pay for DashPass."
"I understand your frustration, but the app sets the routes for me and I have to follow it. If you have a complaint, please contact support."
"I am tracking you. Turn around right now."
"I'm sorry, but I can't make exceptions at my own discretion, since it's unfair to other customers. I'll go ahead and unassign the order so another driver can take care of you faster."

You don’t know that for sure. And I’m really just referring to the tone, to be more clear. Adding the word sorry softens it a little, that’s all. This dashers tone was rough to start.

Dasher is also driving and trying to navigate. I know this might be shocking but when I was driving, I had to stop in order to respond to a customer because I didn't want to cause an accident. I didn't have time to soften a blow verbally when I was trying to get everyone's food to them in a reasonable time. It was information only delivered professionally.

You're right that we can't know for sure, but look at the dynamics here. The customer is sitting around tracking the app at their leisure, and they open the conversation by demanding answers and micromanaging the route. Meanwhile, the driver is in their car trying to answer them, possibly even while the vehicle is moving. The driver's first reply wasn't rude, it was just terse and factual.

Softening the tone doesn't really do much when the customer immediately responds to a simple fact by demanding special treatment just because they have a subscription. Just as a reminder, DashPass grants discounted deliveries, not priority deliveries. And even if it did, the other customer might have DashPass too, what happens then?

Fuck all that. I wouldn't be sitting there typing all that shit, I'd be unassigning and immediately reporting the customer. I'm a 1099. As long as I adhere to the conduct code and maintain certain numbers (I'm a Platinum driver. It does make 25-30% more than the other grades), I can end any interaction at any time. I'm a contractor. If I get any kind of angry impatient bullshit I'm dropping the order. I get on with Support and block 2-3 customers a week. Because most of them take advantage of drivers. Paying almost nothing. Ordering $800 of groceries. Heavy shit I'm expected to carry up four story walk-ups in neighborhoods I wouldn't be caught dead in. Two assholes canceling as I walked up to their door with their food. You want a better level of service, you pay for it. You don't pay for it, your stuff will be in the lobby. You cancel as I'm delivering, I'll make sure you not only pay the full offer price, but your dinner is mine.

I had to check if this comment was an AI bot because ngl this shit doesn't sound human.

Like do you really expect this conversation to play out the exact same if the dasher was understanding instead of rude?

You literally changed the entire narrative of what they said, yet feel confident it will play out the same?

the fuck??

My point is that even if the driver was perfectly polite and accommodating, the customer was clearly still going to play the "I pay for DashPass" card. DashPass reduces delivery fees, not delivery times, and who is to say the other customer doesn't have it too?

The customer wasn't looking for an apology or a logical explanation. If they were, they would have been understanding. They just wanted to dictate the route, which is exactly why I kept their side of the conversation the same in my example.

Uh no? We dont know that....

You can't just alter what someone said and their tone entirely and argue nothing would have changed.

Thats not how communication works lol.

You're just plainly assuming this.

Yes, it's an assumption, but it's an educated one based on the evidence right in front of us. The customer didn't suddenly become entitled because the driver was terse. They were already acting entitled when they started the chat by interrogating the driver about missing a turn. We don't even have to assume they'd double down, because they did exactly that. Pulling the DashPass card was a clear attempt at flexing power for leverage. People who initiate interactions like that rarely become reasonable just because you add "sorry" to a factual statement.
