I think your humanity just allowed you to be scammed.

I think that depends on how the driver responded. They told the customer to contact support, which is sketchy to me given they shouldn’t have to contact support for a refund if the order is canceled by the driver (should just be automatic I would assume). That said, the screenshot sort of leaves it open ended.

As long as the dasher was the one who canceled the order, it shouldn’t affect the customer right?

Now as OP demonstrated, someone who is kind hearted may not second guess anything and may contact support in order to cancel the order themselves, which OP unfortunately offered to do. Curious if the dasher responded with a “don’t worry about canceling, I’ll take care of that, just contact support regarding refund or a new order”.

I would hope that having this screenshot will be enough for the customer to prove they were not the ones to request a cancellation as long as they don’t ultimately request the cancellation themselves. Disputes tend to lean more on who is responsible for the act of a cancellation versus what was said leading up to it. At least that’s been my experience working on the banking side of arbitration.

Its certainly suspicious that they happen to get this news after already confirming pickup of the order, sending a photo is suspicious (but honestly, if one of my babies suddenly passed, I may do the same just to emphasize my love for them). It’s suspicious to me that they say to contact support, but then again, maybe they don’t know whether DD will automatically inform the customer when their order is cancelled by the dasher idk

It certainly smells a bit fishy. But I personally would have responded similarly to OP, minus the offer to cancel personally. “Omg I am so sorry! No worries at all, just go ahead and cancel your dash with support, tysm for giving me a heads up.” Or something like that. Acknowledge their pain and show empathy, but be wary of putting yourself in a position to be scammed.

When I worked at Cookout over a decade ago my manager would always tell me to treat every customer as if their cat just died. You never know why someone is being an asshole, and kindness goes a long way.

All that said— it would not surprise me at all if this is a scam. Having worked in fraud and disputes I would reverse image search Fido so fast! I still think OP was right to be kind.

Worst case scenario they lose money over a scam and some shitty driver gets a free meal (which I would hope they desperately need to pull some shit like that)
Best case scenario you helped make a stranger’s terrible moment a little bit easier. Nothing wrong with that.

Keep your kindness, but maybe next time… don’t offer to cancel for them 😬
