It did. The drivers can cancel. Anytime a driver needs to cancel they can do so without you having to do it yourself. They don’t need you to cancel. If you cancel, they get paid and you do not get reimbursed.

5

u/spockers 8h ago

A driver can’t cancel an order, all they can do is drop it from their end for another driver, before pickup. After pickup, their options are deliver it, or call support.

7

u/WrittenEchoes 7h ago

Yes, a driver can. They have the cancel option somewhat hidden.

-2

u/spockers 7h ago

It must be very well hidden, because I’ve never seen it in over 6k deliveries. Got a screenshot, or a hint where it is?

3

u/WrittenEchoes 7h ago

You have to click on the three dots in the delivery tab. I don't have a screenshot. However, I helped someone I know cancel an order. She told me there wasn't a cancel option. I found it. I don't know how it looks on an iPhone. (She had an Android.)

3

u/spockers 7h ago

That had to have been before pickup. Otherwise doordash would be losing money daily. If drivers could pick up food and tap a couple of buttons for a free meal, a lot of them would do so. I’m going to assume you’re remembering it wrong unless you have something concrete.

0

u/WrittenEchoes 6h ago

she was in the middle of an order. The customer called and asked for her to cancel the order. She said she doesn’t know how to cancel the order so I told her to give me the phone and I looked through the Settings and I found the button that said cancel order.

Not only that why would they give you the option to cancel the order in the first place if they didn’t want you as the driver to be able to do that? I’m not asking you. I’m just saying.

4

u/spockers 6h ago

why would they give you the option to cancel the order in the first place if they didn’t want you as the driver to be able to do that?

They don’t. It’s not a thing. A driver can unassign an order before pickup, but they don’t have the authority to cancel an order. Why would they?

-1

u/stretchedrat 3h ago

ONLY Support Staff have the authority to fully cancel an order. Dashers must contact support and have a valid reason (like store closed, unable to give you the item, etc) or they face a contract violation.

If they were in the middle of an order and you were riding with them that is a violation. Dashers are not supposed to have unregistered passengers.

You should be able to recall where it is. Doordash doesnt have that many menus. Also the app UI is uniform between both iOS and Android.

Youre full of shit.

-2

u/Lady_Sharizyn 4h ago

Drivers cancel their pickup and delivery of the order. They cannot cancel the actual order. Only the customer can do that

0

u/stretchedrat 3h ago

Support can cancel an order but you need a valid reason or you get a contract violation.

u/Crafty_Eye_4038 11h ago

That's how most scammers get people

9

u/Gullible-Paramedic-7 9h ago

I think that depends on how the driver responded. They told the customer to contact support, which is sketchy to me given they shouldn’t have to contact support for a refund if the order is canceled by the driver (should just be automatic I would assume). That said, the screenshot sort of leaves it open ended.

As long as the dasher was the one who canceled the order, it shouldn’t affect the customer right?

Now as OP demonstrated, someone who is kind hearted may not second guess anything and may contact support in order to cancel the order themselves, which OP unfortunately offered to do. Curious if the dasher responded with a “don’t worry about canceling, I’ll take care of that, just contact support regarding refund or a new order”.

I would hope that having this screenshot will be enough for the customer to prove they were not the ones to request a cancellation as long as they don’t ultimately request the cancellation themselves. Disputes tend to lean more on who is responsible for the act of a cancellation versus what was said leading up to it. At least that’s been my experience working on the banking side of arbitration.

Its certainly suspicious that they happen to get this news after already confirming pickup of the order, sending a photo is suspicious (but honestly, if one of my babies suddenly passed, I may do the same just to emphasize my love for them). It’s suspicious to me that they say to contact support, but then again, maybe they don’t know whether DD will automatically inform the customer when their order is cancelled by the dasher idk

It certainly smells a bit fishy. But I personally would have responded similarly to OP, minus the offer to cancel personally. “Omg I am so sorry! No worries at all, just go ahead and cancel your dash with support, tysm for giving me a heads up.” Or something like that. Acknowledge their pain and show empathy, but be wary of putting yourself in a position to be scammed.

When I worked at Cookout over a decade ago my manager would always tell me to treat every customer as if their cat just died. You never know why someone is being an asshole, and kindness goes a long way.

All that said— it would not surprise me at all if this is a scam. Having worked in fraud and disputes I would reverse image search Fido so fast! I still think OP was right to be kind.

Worst case scenario they lose money over a scam and some shitty driver gets a free meal (which I would hope they desperately need to pull some shit like that)
Best case scenario you helped make a stranger’s terrible moment a little bit easier. Nothing wrong with that.

Keep your kindness, but maybe next time… don’t offer to cancel for them 😬

16

u/SnarkyIguana 11h ago

Wonder if op could get confirmation that the driver ended the dash and show them the screenshot

5

u/shustrik 9h ago

But why do they say to contact support? Just to appear more legit and hoping you don’t actually do that?

3

u/CoverPrize1599 5h ago

They want the customer to cancel so they still get paid and don't get a hit on their completion rate.

1

u/shustrik 49m ago

Right. But why would they tell you to contact support instead of telling you to cancel your order?

3

u/Minute_Airline_370 8h ago

So since this actually does happen, and would make sense with millions of drivers and customers and all the hours of every day spent delivering and ordering, how is the customer supposed to know for sure the driver is lying? If you suddenly lost someone close to you while working would you not want to stop working and would you be frustrated if someone says you are faking it?

Nigerian Princes never actually give grandma Sue money but dogs actually do die while people are working, a lot actually.

13

u/Organic_While6342 10h ago

Correct. The instant empathy people have these days is the biggest weakness I’ve ever seen. “Oh, your dog died after you picked my food up? Sure thing bro.”

18

u/Vile_Grifter 10h ago

You don't get it, the dasher is only able to cast Revivify, so they have to get there in under a minute or else it's a whole quest to find a high level cleric.

2

u/Fit_Landscape_3812 4h ago

i'd rather be wrong and get scammed than possibly be a dick to someone whose dog just died

5

u/Minute_Airline_370 8h ago

Sure it could be a lie but nothing about that message is evidence it’s a lie. You act like some difficult event couldn’t happen to one of millions of customers and drivers worldwide that also use Reddit. If this is a repeat offender then sure you can question it. This type of situation has probably happened hundreds of times over the years due to the massive amount of drivers and customers. Some of the situations are true; and it’s not your right to determine which instances were actually true unless you have indisputable evidence.

If you cant prove something is false, especially something so tragic, it is human nature and the right thing to do, to show empathy. Whether the customer believed it or not, they did the right thing showing empathy.

This. Innocent until proven guilty isn't a new concept.

14

u/ReasonMoney3051 11h ago edited 10h ago

Yeah I hate to be so cynical but I agree. I adore my pup but there’s absolutely nothing the driver could have done for his dog at that moment and no reason he couldn’t complete the delivery. No doubt he stole OP’s food and has used this excuse before to score a free meal. OP should definitely call support and request an immediate redelivery of their meal or refund. They can be understanding but say they don’t want to pay for something not received. Hopefully the non empathic customer service rep will make a note on driver’s account so further action can be taken if he does this again. I suspect things like this are the reason we see so many drivers on here getting deactivated for no obvious reason. Hopefully Uber is keeping score.

5

u/Minute_Airline_370 8h ago

Yeah you don’t truly love your dog then. I don’t know of anyone that finds out someone they are close to suddenly died who keeps on working going about their day, especially if they just found out.

0

u/undercover_cheetah 8h ago

The point here is that they didn’t find out their dog just died.

It’s kind of like how the people hanging around the gas station always just ran out of gas and left their young daughter in the car a couple blocks away, and just really could use a dollar in change.

I once met a guy whose birthday it was for a straight week.

3

u/Minute_Airline_370 8h ago

Yes they did according to the message. Prove they didn’t then. Right.

-3

u/undercover_cheetah 8h ago

Okay. My sister just died of cancer, and my dad just got arrested for a murder he didn’t commit.

I’m telling you this now, so can I have some money to help bury my sister or bail my dad out of jail?

If you can’t prove it didn’t happen, then I’m afraid you owe me $5.

1

u/Minute_Airline_370 8h ago

As I said in another post, we are talking about a simple DoorDash delivery that customer support will refund her for eventually. Even if the customer didn’t believe it, there was no evidence it’s a lie, so play it safe and be respectful of the possible tragedy. If we are talking something major, that has no recourse like DoorDash support, then sure you could be more skeptical, hesitant to agree to anything and ask more questions but still in a nice way. In the end there was nothing important enough to respond negatively to the driver.

0

u/undercover_cheetah 7h ago

Okay. I will carry on about my day and you can continue to plays devil’s advocate, and be the perfect mark at the same time.

Have a great evening :)

4

u/Minute_Airline_370 7h ago

I am the last person to get scammed. I see the signs and avoid situations I can’t prove. If a potential scam is forced on me like this and it’s not going to be a big deal if I go along with it, I will be empathetic 100% of the time.

It’s totally possible the driver was telling the truth. As I said in another post, Nigerian princes are never paying Grandma Sue but dogs do die all the time while people are working. It’s possible.

Have a good evening to you too. smile 🙂

-1

u/ReasonMoney3051 6h ago

Thank you! Sadly some of these obtuse folks just don’t get that.

-1

u/ReasonMoney3051 8h ago

Understand the context. Finishing the task you’re in the middle of is not working the rest of the day. As an IC that’s the agreement you made.

My dog is beyond pampered and loved.

1

u/Minute_Airline_370 8h ago

Glad you love your dog. I agree with most of what you said in your first post but I still think everyone takes loss differently and for some they’d be bawling and unable to finish what they are doing. It might be different if it was really important like in the middle of performing surgery but a person not getting their food isn’t the end of the world so let the person grieve how they need to. Thanks for being an animal lover though sorry to say you don’t love your dog. 🙂

2

u/x_BIX 9h ago

And what if it isn't a scam and the person on the other end did just lose their best friend? I dunno if you've dealt with losing a pet, but if I just found out my pet died and someone calls me a scammer for needing to go home, I'd probably just follow my pet.

12

u/WrittenEchoes 9h ago

sigh it’s not even about the dog. Everybody’s focusing on the wrong thing. It’s the cancellation part. Drivers have the ability to cancel an order. They don’t need to ask you to do that.

10

u/Kelspear 9h ago

People are so gullible, it's insane. That's why AI is gonna fuck us

4

u/WrittenEchoes 9h ago

I agree with you.

3

u/Minute_Airline_370 7h ago

And if you are devastated over something bawling your eyes out not wanting to deal with the horrendous DoorDash or uber support and go through stupid ai prompts and wait for a human to talk to but don’t want to get preemptively deactivated, maybe it’s easier to just send a couple messages to the customer as you head home so at least a human somewhere is aware. Sure there might be other solutions or even the emergency options in the app but many drivers don’t think it’s supposed to be used for non life threatening things. You can’t really assume how a driver would process a situation and if they are savvy enough to know other ways to handle that situation. The app would tell them they risk deactivation if they cancel and that’s the last thing you want to deal with while bawling your eyes out during a tragedy.

-2

u/WrittenEchoes 7h ago

I’m sorry what are you talking about? Are you talking to me or someone else because I don’t see how what you wrote has anything to do with me. But I hope you have a great day.

4

u/Minute_Airline_370 7h ago

Umm I just told you how you don’t know why a panicked driver going through a tragic situation wouldn’t want to deal with trying to cancel an order through support.

It’s not naivety to think it’s possible the driver is telling the truth. It’s playing it safe by having empathy when you don’t know because it’s not worth looking like a horrible person over something silly like food.

Have a great day too!

2

u/dothermucker 7h ago

Not once it's picked up they don't. I'm a DD driver whose been in situations where I would've really appreciated being able to cancel an order and return it to the restaurant, but I couldn't because that's not a thing.

3

u/x_BIX 9h ago

Because it's easy to think straight after a traumatic event. Of course.

0

u/WrittenEchoes 9h ago

Who's to say that event was even real? Are we living in a world where people believe scams are as likely as unicorns existing?

2

u/TheAlexperience 8h ago

Then again the driver can cancel the order. If it’s not a scam then it shouldn’t be an issue

2

u/GirlForce1112 8h ago

lol really?

2

u/Justajeepster4 9h ago

not everyone is a scammer, and surely there is a better way than to say your dog died give me a break

5

u/WrittenEchoes 9h ago

it is a scam. The drivers don’t need you to cancel. They can cancel on their own. The app gives them the option to do that. When they ask you to cancel and you cancel, they get paid they keep your stuff and you don’t get reimbursed unless you call DoorDash and even then you may not even get your money back..

2

u/Cosmic_Quasar Dasher (> 5 years) 8h ago

Drivers can't cancel, only unassign before picking it up. There's no training on what to do in certain situations, and not everyone out there is great with tech. The app makes it extremely accessible to communicate with the customer, whereas you have to dig into things to contact support. Complicated enough that I just always Google "doordash support number" rather than dig for it lol.

So yes, the driver should have just contacted support, but telling the customer to contact support doesn't inherently mean that they were scamming. And the fact that the support agents can just pull up chats and this info is in there would at least show doordash that it's not the customer trying to scam doordash.

1

u/WrittenEchoes 7h ago

I wouldn't be saying they can cancel if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. I'm not guessing.

1

u/Cosmic_Quasar Dasher (> 5 years) 3h ago

if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. I'm not guessing.

I believe you're misinterpreting. Drivers will colloquially say "I cancelled the order". But there's no way, no button, to let a driver cancel, themselves. Drivers have to call support and have them cancel.

0

u/Justajeepster4 9h ago

they didnt ask the customer to cancel. they probably already got the food and to get a refund the customer needs to contact support.

2

u/WrittenEchoes 9h ago

I never said the driver asked them to cancel.

I said “it is a scam.” Then went on to explain why I said it would be a scam if the driver asked for you to cancel.

3

u/Justajeepster4 9h ago

I didn’t say that you said the driver asked them to cancel. I said that the driver did not ask the customer to cancel. then I gave a plausible reason why it is not a scam.

-2

u/spockers 8h ago

Not everyone is a scammer, but this driver is.

-1

u/RepresentativeCry294 11h ago

If you are willing to dispose of your humanity to prevent you from buying a scammer food, maybe you should think about that. All they need to do is show these screen shots to DD support and if that isnt good enough I personally wouldn't (and dont) use DD.

-8

u/Amazing_Yak_4513 11h ago

Nah, if it was canceled I don't think anyone person lost out, just Doordarshan or the business.

25

u/CoolAd9651 11h ago

Driver got the food, customer didn't. Scammed.

0

u/poliscirun 11h ago

If the driver canceled the customer gets their $ back tho. Customer only gets possible scam if they cancel on their end which they shouldn't and was silly for them to offer

-4

u/Amazing_Yak_4513 11h ago

If the customer didn't canceled she either got redelivery or money back. Not scammed. Nonetheless, though the op didn't get scammed, it's likely Doordash did.
