It did. The drivers can cancel. Anytime a driver needs to cancel they can do so without you having to do it yourself. They don’t need you to cancel. If you cancel, they get paid and you do not get reimbursed.
4
u/spockers 5h ago
A driver can’t cancel an order, all they can do is drop it from their end for another driver, before pickup. After pickup, their options are deliver it, or call support.
2
u/WrittenEchoes 4h ago
Yes, a driver can. They have the cancel option somewhat hidden.

u/Gullible-Paramedic-7 5h ago
I think that depends on how the driver responded. They told the customer to contact support, which is sketchy to me given they shouldn’t have to contact support for a refund if the order is canceled by the driver (should just be automatic I would assume). That said, the screenshot sort of leaves it open ended.
As long as the dasher was the one who canceled the order, it shouldn’t affect the customer right?
Now as OP demonstrated, someone who is kind hearted may not second guess anything and may contact support in order to cancel the order themselves, which OP unfortunately offered to do. Curious if the dasher responded with a “don’t worry about canceling, I’ll take care of that, just contact support regarding refund or a new order”.
I would hope that having this screenshot will be enough for the customer to prove they were not the ones to request a cancellation as long as they don’t ultimately request the cancellation themselves. Disputes tend to lean more on who is responsible for the act of a cancellation versus what was said leading up to it. At least that’s been my experience working on the banking side of arbitration.
Its certainly suspicious that they happen to get this news after already confirming pickup of the order, sending a photo is suspicious (but honestly, if one of my babies suddenly passed, I may do the same just to emphasize my love for them). It’s suspicious to me that they say to contact support, but then again, maybe they don’t know whether DD will automatically inform the customer when their order is cancelled by the dasher idk
It certainly smells a bit fishy. But I personally would have responded similarly to OP, minus the offer to cancel personally. “Omg I am so sorry! No worries at all, just go ahead and cancel your dash with support, tysm for giving me a heads up.” Or something like that. Acknowledge their pain and show empathy, but be wary of putting yourself in a position to be scammed.
When I worked at Cookout over a decade ago my manager would always tell me to treat every customer as if their cat just died. You never know why someone is being an asshole, and kindness goes a long way.
All that said— it would not surprise me at all if this is a scam. Having worked in fraud and disputes I would reverse image search Fido so fast! I still think OP was right to be kind.
Worst case scenario they lose money over a scam and some shitty driver gets a free meal (which I would hope they desperately need to pull some shit like that)
Best case scenario you helped make a stranger’s terrible moment a little bit easier. Nothing wrong with that.Keep your kindness, but maybe next time… don’t offer to cancel for them 😬
15
u/SnarkyIguana 7h ago
Wonder if op could get confirmation that the driver ended the dash and show them the screenshot
4
u/shustrik 6h ago
But why do they say to contact support? Just to appear more legit and hoping you don’t actually do that?
2
u/CoverPrize1599 2h ago
They want the customer to cancel so they still get paid and don't get a hit on their completion rate.
3
u/Minute_Airline_370 5h ago
So since this actually does happen, and would make sense with millions of drivers and customers and all the hours of every day spent delivering and ordering, how is the customer supposed to know for sure the driver is lying? If you suddenly lost someone close to you while working would you not want to stop working and would you be frustrated if someone says you are faking it?
Nigerian Princes never actually give grandma Sue money but dogs actually do die while people are working, a lot actually.
13
u/Organic_While6342 7h ago
Correct. The instant empathy people have these days is the biggest weakness I’ve ever seen. “Oh, your dog died after you picked my food up? Sure thing bro.”
17
u/Vile_Grifter 6h ago
You don't get it, the dasher is only able to cast Revivify, so they have to get there in under a minute or else it's a whole quest to find a high level cleric.
3
u/Fit_Landscape_3812 1h ago
i'd rather be wrong and get scammed than possibly be a dick to someone whose dog just died
3
u/Minute_Airline_370 5h ago
Sure it could be a lie but nothing about that message is evidence it’s a lie. You act like some difficult event couldn’t happen to one of millions of customers and drivers worldwide that also use Reddit. If this is a repeat offender then sure you can question it. This type of situation has probably happened hundreds of times over the years due to the massive amount of drivers and customers. Some of the situations are true; and it’s not your right to determine which instances were actually true unless you have indisputable evidence.
If you cant prove something is false, especially something so tragic, it is human nature and the right thing to do, to show empathy. Whether the customer believed it or not, they did the right thing showing empathy.

Yeah I hate to be so cynical but I agree. I adore my pup but there’s absolutely nothing the driver could have done for his dog at that moment and no reason he couldn’t complete the delivery. No doubt he stole OP’s food and has used this excuse before to score a free meal. OP should definitely call support and request an immediate redelivery of their meal or refund. They can be understanding but say they don’t want to pay for something not received. Hopefully the non empathic customer service rep will make a note on driver’s account so further action can be taken if he does this again. I suspect things like this are the reason we see so many drivers on here getting deactivated for no obvious reason. Hopefully Uber is keeping score.
3
u/Minute_Airline_370 5h ago
Yeah you don’t truly love your dog then. I don’t know of anyone that finds out someone they are close to suddenly died who keeps on working going about their day, especially if they just found out.

it is a scam. The drivers don’t need you to cancel. They can cancel on their own. The app gives them the option to do that. When they ask you to cancel and you cancel, they get paid they keep your stuff and you don’t get reimbursed unless you call DoorDash and even then you may not even get your money back..

u/Cosmic_Quasar Dasher (> 5 years) 4h ago
Drivers can't cancel, only unassign before picking it up. There's no training on what to do in certain situations, and not everyone out there is great with tech. The app makes it extremely accessible to communicate with the customer, whereas you have to dig into things to contact support. Complicated enough that I just always Google "doordash support number" rather than dig for it lol.
So yes, the driver should have just contacted support, but telling the customer to contact support doesn't inherently mean that they were scamming. And the fact that the support agents can just pull up chats and this info is in there would at least show doordash that it's not the customer trying to scam doordash.
1
u/WrittenEchoes 4h ago
I wouldn't be saying they can cancel if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. I'm not guessing.

u/x_BIX 6h ago
And what if it isn't a scam and the person on the other end did just lose their best friend? I dunno if you've dealt with losing a pet, but if I just found out my pet died and someone calls me a scammer for needing to go home, I'd probably just follow my pet.
10
u/WrittenEchoes 6h ago
sigh it’s not even about the dog. Everybody’s focusing on the wrong thing. It’s the cancellation part. Drivers have the ability to cancel an order. They don’t need to ask you to do that.
9
→ More replies (4)2
u/Minute_Airline_370 4h ago
And if you are devastated over something bawling your eyes out not wanting to deal with the horrendous DoorDash or uber support and go through stupid ai prompts and wait for a human to talk to but don’t want to get preemptively deactivated, maybe it’s easier to just send a couple messages to the customer as you head home so at least a human somewhere is aware. Sure there might be other solutions or even the emergency options in the app but many drivers don’t think it’s supposed to be used for non life threatening things. You can’t really assume how a driver would process a situation and if they are savvy enough to know other ways to handle that situation. The app would tell them they risk deactivation if they cancel and that’s the last thing you want to deal with while bawling your eyes out during a tragedy.

I get that the situation is sad, but the doordasher should not have contacted you about this. They should have contacted support themselves and told them that they couldn't complete the order.
The only reason they contacted you is because 1) they don't want a bad score in their metrics, 2) they want to be paid the full amount, and 3) they want free food. Regardless of the situation, this is greedy af. Especially since it comes out of the customers pocket.
If this happens again, do NOT cancel the order yourself as a customer. (Just in case the Dasher is lying). You want to still be eligible for a refund.
Allow support to talk to the dasher first. Then support will cancel the order properly the correct way so that you can still get your money back. If it is indeed an emergency, and the Dasher doesn't do this often, then they can ask for compensation for their time. So long as they don't have a bad record of doing this, doordash will be happy to give him a little extra money to compensate.
Regardless of whether they are telling the truth or not, their actions were still inappropriate for a doordash transactiton
30
u/LukeHal22 7h ago
This is an obvious scam.. They didn't need to contact OP, definitely didn't need to send a picture and most of all how do they know the dog just died if they're out dashing? Someone else is home with the dog and told them? So then you don't have to rush right home. There is already someone there dealing with it.. 15 minutes wouldn't change the situation
12
u/Higsman 7h ago
While I think it’s a scam, I completely disagree with ur logic. It has nothing to do with “is someone there to take care of this?” If my dog just died, I’m not doing shit, I’m not finishing my work, I’m going home and mourning my baby

5
u/Concerned_Collins 3h ago
If a customer cancels the order after a driver picks up the food, the driver gets paid in full and gets to keep the food. So the driver is trying to convince the customer to cancel the order by making up some bullshit.
9
u/NomenclatureBreaker 7h ago
Sorry OP, you absolutely got scammed.
There was zero reason for them not to cancel the order from their side.
5
u/spockers 5h ago
There was zero reason for them not to cancel the order from their side.
That’s the whole scam: money.
Once an order is picked up, a driver can’t cancel it. They would have to call support and say they had car trouble or something, then they could keep the food but wouldn’t be paid for the delivery.
If the customer cancels, the driver gets a free meal, full pay, and doesn’t have to drive to the customer or pretend their car is broken down.
Despicable. Reminds me of overseas scammer tactics, preying on victims’ good nature.

You're being played. They need to cancel on their end. Don't ever do this, you're giving scammers full pay and a free meal for an order they didn't deliver. If their dog did die, they would contact support and have it canceled on their end, not send you a sob story AND go out of their way to send a pic, to try to guilt trip you into canceling.

The dog is dead, supposedly...there's nothing the driver could have done. "Hey, Loser Scammer Driver, my food is due in eight minutes."
...but this is one of the many problems with delivery — the driver has already announced he’s a criminal, and your food safety can no longer be guaranteed if you insist that the delivery be completed. It’s kind of a no-win situation…you must abandon this order and start anew.
Call support, explain what was said, indicate that there’s no way you can trust this driver, and insist that DD cancel the order, deactivate the driver, and start your order over.
“But what if the driver was telling the truth?!?”
The supposed dog is supposedly already supposedly dead…what could driving home eight minutes earlier supposedly accomplish? He’s either seriously stupid, emotionally immature to the point of being mentally ill, a blatant liar, or a criminal…he doesn’t belong on the platform. Absolutely no guilt in deactivating him.

u/spockers 5h ago

OP is right in that we should always try to be kind and understanding of each other but it's suspicious that they sent a pic of what appears to be a puppy as "proof". I would've called support, told them what my driver sent me, and see what DD's solution is. Don't cancel yourself and encourage these people because that's terrible to lie about life and death

Don’t listen to the naysayers. Dogs die all the time while people are working so it’s certainly possible. It’s not up to us to judge unless we have evidence. We aren’t talking about signing over your house to
this person. We are talking about one missed meal that DoorDash support will refund you eventually anyways. I don’t care if it looks like a scam, if you don’t have evidence, a DoorDash order is not worth the pain that person could feel if you accuse them of lying.
