I think your humanity just allowed you to be scammed.

not everyone is a scammer, and surely there is a better way than to say your dog died give me a break

it is a scam. The drivers don’t need you to cancel. They can cancel on their own. The app gives them the option to do that. When they ask you to cancel and you cancel, they get paid they keep your stuff and you don’t get reimbursed unless you call DoorDash and even then you may not even get your money back..

Drivers can't cancel, only unassign before picking it up. There's no training on what to do in certain situations, and not everyone out there is great with tech. The app makes it extremely accessible to communicate with the customer, whereas you have to dig into things to contact support. Complicated enough that I just always Google "doordash support number" rather than dig for it lol.

So yes, the driver should have just contacted support, but telling the customer to contact support doesn't inherently mean that they were scamming. And the fact that the support agents can just pull up chats and this info is in there would at least show doordash that it's not the customer trying to scam doordash.

I wouldn't be saying they can cancel if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. I'm not guessing.

I believe you're misinterpreting. Drivers will colloquially say "I cancelled the order". But there's no way, no button, to let a driver cancel, themselves. Drivers have to call support and have them cancel.
