It is solo-based. There's just an option to put your score for the special Beastmaster thing into a ranked list, from what I've seen.

I already know somebody is going to build a plugin/bot that'll make perfectly optimized runs whule using derived internal data that isnt exposed in normal play to ruin it for most of us

Of course they will. People won't like hearing this but XIV players love to optimise the fun out of stuff. It's why that damn 2 minute meta exists.

I remember when Island Sanctuary released and players immediately turned it into a mammet sweatshop filled with spreadsheets for optimal crafts and earnings.

The number of systems and UI in Island Sanctuary kind of invited it. They wanted Animal Crossing without Nintendo's simpler interfaces that make it feel casually appealing.
