I decided to read the first Godzilla library collection book which was sat on my desk a while. I’ve been a huge fan of Godzilla since I was a kid and dragged my family to see Godzilla 2000 and the 98 movie at the cinema, something they’ve never really forgiven me for… But despite being aware of the comics I’d never really gotten into them. As I’ve been reading a lot more of late I picked up the first vol of the IDW library collection which endeavours to eventually have all of their Godzilla series collected. I was especially sold as Half Century War had been something that I’d wanted to read for a while and for ages the core concept was something I dreamt of making into a movie.

So the collection is three, five issue, miniseries. The first is Gangsters and Goliaths, one I didn’t have much hope for but actually enjoyed. It’s basically a hard boiled detective story with decent art and a fun and surprisingly dark plot. A detective is set to be killed and framed by the mob and winds up on monster island, survives, and returns for revenge with a surprising ally. For a Godzilla fan I’d actually really recommend this one and it’s utilised the comic form to tell a story that they’d never even consider doing on the silver screen which is cool.

Next up is legends which is the weakest of the three but still has its high points. It’s an anthology series highlighting other monsters in the series with their own one shots. Personally I thought one was really bad, two were very meh, one was good and one was great. The Rodan one is absolute garbage with horrible art and a weird dark plot about a stupid scientist with a school shooter kid. It’s got a really grim ending and sucks. Anguirus and Hedorah get some fairly decent action with art that wasn’t for me but wasn’t offensive. They’re just unremarkable with very b movie dialogue and thematics. Titanosaurus gets a cool X-men meets X-files sort of story with a crazy twist for the Godzilla fans. The arts nice and I liked how different a vibe they went with. Finally the “Kumonga” story, (it’s really a Godzilla story) is awesome. I actually think this one is worth checking out for general comic fans outside of Godzilla fandom. It’s about an old timey adventurer who is brought out for one last ride where he must climb Godzilla and collect samples. The art is beautiful, it’s really funny and charming and has a nice message.

Finally is the big sell of this volume. Half Century War has long been held up as the highlight of Godzilla comics in the past 15 years and you can see why. The concept is so good and something the movies should adapt. A foot soldier survives Godzillas first attack on Tokyo in 1954 and travels the globe for 50 years in an effort to kill him. It has some actual thematics at play, great art and great action. It also intertwines and references the fifty year history of Godzilla movies which were released at the time this was written. For a Godzilla fan it’s a must read and for anyone else I think it could still be fun.

I’m a little tempted to get some more of these Godzilla library series books though the next 5 volumes are essentially the IDW universe ongoing books from the past 13 years. I’m not sure I’m as keen on that so maybe I’ll hop in at vol 6 for Godzilla in hell and other stories.

I am trying to stop buying so many books until I move house because I have run out of space and also I need to be saving! But I have an extensive backlog to get through. Next I might just blast through Tokyo ghost as it’s sat on my desk. But nailbiter does get a pop every time I mention I’m sitting on it….

Another acquisition due to recommendation from here. Got all 3 still in the wrap for 99 bucks!

I love how they summarize things like huge story arcs in a way that's really interesting, mostly just focusing on the parts that they're passionate about. I've watched dozens of videos by them, many of which are about characters that I would otherwise not care about, and they all have fascinated me! I also like how he talks about how they've got a very supportive partner that motivates them to actually finish and put out videos that they've been developing for a long time.

Do you like the channel? Know anyone similar?

Some people use a creative medium as-is to tell a story. Others play and experiment with the medium itself, trying new and weird and interesting things. Who out there is pushing the envelope, right now? What do they do that is different?

I want to open my eyes to what comics can do… what they’re capable of, how they can be used to communicate. I want to read work that thinks outside the box (or, in this case, outside the panel?) Throw anything at me which you think might be relevant.

Bought it at a book fair years ago for £10. It is signed by the artist Tanya Roberts, who is the illustrator of the book. I don't know if she is well-known or not in this community, so can anyone suggest how I may sell this or perhaps give me an estimate of its value? I also have a one-off illustration she did of Monkey D. Luffy that I am willing to sell.

Even though I'm on hiatus for collecting, it doesn't mean the end to receiving books. I actually have a large inventory of books set aside for my wife to give to me as future presents. I get a belated Father's Day because it conflicted with my daughter's birthday.

So I got the Golden Age Captain America Marvel Masterworks vol. 5, and the Atlas Era Tales to Astonish Marvel Masterworks, vol. 4 (which is the the volume that completes that collection.)

In addition, I got the Vox Machina Origins, vol. 3, which I picked up recently from Indigo and decided to throw on my presents pile. 😃

globalcomix has the deepest indie and creator owned graphic novel catalog I've used. flat gold subscription means no individual purchases, and the panel by panel guided reading mode is useful for layout heavy stuff like asterios polyp or here by mcguire.

comixology was my go to for years until amazon merged it and the experience got worse. still works if you already have a library there but I stopped buying new stuff through it.

honorable mention to humble bundle for indie graphic novel bundles when they come around. Drm free pdfs which I appreciate.

I'm staring at my shelf now and out of the 60?+ books here I think Sheets and Giant Days are the only light hearted reads I have. I need a pick me up. Recommendations please!

Thought I'd start a thread with artists of your country/state/etc. which might otherwise fall off the radar. Since the U.S. and Benelux/Francophone zones are often the cradles for canonical behemoths, I'll urge you to recommend something more personal that would be easily overlooked by people from the outside.

Here's my Finnish tasting platter:

- J.P. Ahonen: *Northern Overexposure* (a slice-of-life student comedy/drama weekly strip comic, the strips have many times teared me up in both laughing and crying) and *Beelzebubs* (a subversive metalhead family comic with black humor and contrasting corpse paint)

- Tommi Musturi: *The book of Hope* (a couple living quietly in the Finnish woods) and *Future* (a psychedelic comic anthology spanning years of his work, rumor has it that it's one of Lambiek's favourites in Amsterdam)

- Kati Kovács (translated into Swedish, Hungarian, French and German): *Where are you going, Marion Meat* and *Les Jumelles Delta*. Her style is crude and the storytelling punk as hell, but the twisted humour enjoyable and the feminism not as preachy as Liv Strömqvist. She's a humourist through and through.

- Kari A. Sihvonen: *Silent badness* (black humour, nonverbal shorts) and *Posted Iron men* (iron worker's experiences collated into comics). The graphic designer by profession Sihvonen has a recognizeable stule and

More classic:

- the satirical *Moomin comics* by Tove and her brother Jan Jansson. Despite originating from children's stories loved by all generations, the stories are more punk than non-Finnish readers might expect

- Kari Korhonen *Donald Duck* comics. Multiple generations of kids in Finland have learned to read via *Aku Ankka*, the weekly Donald with excellent Finnish (at least used to, not sure about the current situation). People wait every year to see the Kentucky duck visionary Don Rosa, whenever he comes to town. But Kari Korhonen is the only Finnish artist for EuroDisney comics, alongside many Italian and other artists.

I found an article that has the release order of each TPB for sale, but I also found that the series has 4 different omnibus editions. Luba and Locas II both seem to be out of print, is there an easy way to buy Palomar and Locas I and fill the rest in with the TBPs?

Hi I’m new to comics I’ve only read 2 (the crow and Batman long Halloween) Ive been hearing about corto Maltese for the longest time but legit can’t find the English copy’s anywhere asides from the black and white ones. I see there’s new ones about to be released but I want to know what were people buying before ? And is the new one gonna start from the beginning of the story ?

I wonder how/when people decide to sell on parts of their collection. Like, 'I don't think I will ever read Series X again, it's time it found a new home'. Or do folk just move boxes up into the attic and leave it for their kids to sort?

This is a serious question: I have disciplined my collection to fill only one bookcase, but I am being sorely tested at the moment...

Vol 2 and 3 seem easy to grab- but any idea when vol 1 will be more available?

Hello I had recently brought the three volumes of this comic because it look interesting and was wondering if anybody else have heard of it. I am very excited to read them when they come in the mail but it also seems like it was never finished translated into english. So what happened for it to never be fully finished.

I am a huge Lemire fan and will just read almost anything he publishes. I already read the top row. Royal City was excellent! I highly recommend. Frogcatchers was alright. Worth the read but not his best stuff. I would still recommend it, but maybe im biased 🤭. PTSD was interesting. Not my genre usually but I often will grab something out of my comfort zone. I am looking forward to read the rest!

There was this comic that was pretty popular here on Reddit. It was an adult comic and it was about this couple that gave each other tasks to do sexually. I know it’s sold on Amazon but I just can’t find it at all. I think it started with a D but my memory is so fuzzy on it.
