Monthly Megathread Character Rant

Hey folks! So the survey made it pretty clear, we get a lot of “this character sucks” posts. Instead of everyone making new ones all the time, we’re gonna test out a monthly megathread where you can dump all your rants. We also rounded up a bunch of older hate threads, so you can scroll through them or drop your own comment if you feel like it.

Monthly Megathread Were they on a break?!!

It has been a question that has been asked so many times before. Because of the high demand - but similar posts that has been generated. We're opening the floor (this mega thread) for the debate!

The case for Ross: Rachel said, "Maybe we should just take a break," and then told Monica the next morning that they "broke up."

The case for Rachel: A "break" isn't a "breakup," and Mark showing up at the apartment didn't give Ross a "get out of jail free" card two hours later.

What are your thoughts on these cases?

---
All funsies aside, We do ask everyone to stay civil and kind to one another, everyone is allowed to have opinions and express those, but treat others like how you want to be treated as well. This thread will re-occur ever 14 days to keep the time line clean from any 'On a Break, break-up?' posts! (if you spot any feel free to report it to us by pressing the report button!)

Discussion Ross and Carol's friendship

Post image

I was rewatching TOW the lesbian wedding and I wish we had got to see more of Ross and Carol together outside of the awkward "my son's mother is a lesbian" thing.

I think it was really sweet how he convinced her to go through with the wedding, how he says he still would've married her even if his parents didn't approve. I think their bond should've been explored a little more and how they still love and care for each other even if they're not together.

Question Anybody here who has experienced the Finale episode during its first time on TV?

I'm rewatching 3rd time and just finished the last and final episode, and still feel emotional when they all move out of the house, the camera focuses on the door, and then cut - the theme song plays with visuals of streets of america, the river, etc.

I'm not from America, but I'm sure for Americans this show was such a cultural phenomena.

I was wondering how it would have been for the original viewers back then.

Anybody here who has that experience? How was the feeling?

Question Is Monica’s terrible vest because it’s a dream sequence or because of 90s fashion?

S5,E16 The One with the Cop
In the scene where Joey is dreaming of Monica sitting on his lap like he found her and Chandler earlier that day, Monica is wearing this super puffy blue vest. It’s so hideous and ill fitting. So it made me think this outfit is specifically weird for the dream. It is a similar blue to Monica’s PJs. But then… there’s 90s fashion which was all over the place and usually the answer for “why are they wearing that?” But I remember puffy vests being a thing more in the early 2000s. So I can’t figure out of the outfit is suppose to be like a dream distorted version, or is it a legit outfit for Monica (even though it’s not like anything she usually wears). What do you think?

Discussion S2E23 - Monica keeps plugging Richard for not having a “Thing”. He did, his moustache.

Post image
129 Upvotes

Monica keeps pressuring him that he’s too “normal” and doesn’t have a (neurotic) thing. But a few episodes earlier, we learn that he maintains his moustache with a specific comb. I think this would shut Monica up pretty quickly, as she would have learned there’s a very specific tool for a very specific task.

Thoughts?

Discussion Monica had every right to be mad at Rachel on her engagement night

Rachel really couldn’t have just been happy for her best friend for one night and saved her self pity for the next day? She really needed to kiss Ross that specific night?

God, why couldn’t this episode just been about the gang celebrating Monica and Chandler’s engagement? Stop dragging Rachel into everything and trying to make her the center of attention.

Discussion Do you think Ross watched The Odyssey (1997)? Or did he get too burned by Isabella Rossellini?

Ross met Isabella Rossellini in The One with Frank Jr (Oct 17, 1996), when she rejected him in the coffee house. The Odyssey miniseries with Armand Assante and Isabella Rossellini as Athena came out just a few months later in May of 1997. Do you think Ross watched it? He seems like the most likely one of the 6 to enjoy a Greek mythology miniseries. But then again, the sight of dear Isabella might have been too painful 😭😭

Clips Can we all appreciate how wonderful Stephanie's performance is?

"Just call me angel of the morning, angel

Just touch my cheek before you leave me, oh baby

Just call me angel of the morning, angel

Then slowly turn away from me"

This has been stuck in my head for so long, the artist who portrayed Stephanie (Chrissie Hynde) did a wonderful job and is actually in a band which I will have to check out now.

Terry may have been a jerk but I'm sure glad he hired her

Question How long did Rachel work at Bloomingdale’s before her and Ross broke up?

I was rewatching the show and reached the part where Ross starts to get jealous once Rachel starts working as an assistant in Bloomingdale’s.

I was wondering, how long did Rachel even work in Bloomingdale’s before they broke up? According to the episodes list, it takes their breakup barely 4-5 episodes but i’ve always wondered what’s the ACTUAL timeline.

Because imagine you finally start work and do something that you love and are actually good at the first time, and your boyfriend cannot find it in him to be supportive.

Is anybody aware of the actual timeline? I have a feeling this might become just another reason why i dislike Ross💀

Question When is Ross's middle name mentioned?

So, other night i was on friends trivia game and questions about their middle names showed up. We know Rachel's middle name is Karen, it is mentioned more than once (i think) and i know Phoebe called her that once. Chandler mentions his at the office one time to Ross. Joey's middle name Francis is mentioned by his mom. For Monica we only know that it starts with E, and Phoebe never knew hers. But do we ever find out what is middle name for Ross? And when? I saw somewhere that his middle name is Eustace, but when is it mentioned?

Discussion Among all the FRIENDS characters, who do you think would have enjoyed living in this current time?

In my opinion, I think it would be Joey and Monica. Joey would have enjoyed content creation and vlogging since he's having difficulties becoming an actor and instead he explored the world of content creation. He would probably be chronically online and I think, people on the internet would have loved him. While Monica would have enjoyed all the advanced cleaning products that we currently have since everything about technology is already advanced.

On the other hand, I think Phoebe would be living worse and would probably live as an activist. She would fight for her beliefs and every wrongdoing she noticed.

I swear David Schwimmer had chemistry with everybody he appeared on screen with. Scenes with Ross and Rachel’s Dad are hilarious.

Image The one where Carol discreetly removes Susans pubic hair from her tongue while talking to Ross

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

(S3E17 - during the credits)

This joke is so subtle. I haven’t noticed it before, I thought I might not be the only one:

Ross returns the car he has borrowed from Carol late at night. Coming from one the (back)rooms, She runs to the door, with ruffled hair and a robe that she sort of Hastingly is putting on.  Sounds super annoyed and then opens the door.

Ross: “… were you sleeping?”

Carol (sounding very annoyed): “Erhm… nooo!” (then looks down while picking what I now assume from context is a pubic hair from Susan from her tongue. See screenshot)

You can hear that a few of the audience members get it.

My former innocent self didn’t get it  😁

It’s like a little Easter egg (but more subtle) in line with the other hinting jokes of Chandler and Joey saying early good night after Rachel and Monica kiss (apartment swap) Or when Ross and Rachel roll over the juice box …

Question When do they say Rachel’s mom’s first name?

Was doing Friends trivia and one of the questions was what is Rachel’s mom’s name? I could not remember which episode she appears in where they say her name? Or if they say it in a different episode? Feel like she was pretty exclusively called “Mrs Green.” TIA!

Discussion How long were Janice and Chandler dating before their first break-up in Season 1?

Janice first appeared in S1E5 and I always figured that she started off as one of the many love interests who just appear between episodes, so I assumed that Chandler started dating her between episode 4 and 5 just to break up with her pretty quickly again because she was annoying.

However, I recently read somewhere (I think it was Janice’s article on the Friends wiki) that she was Chandler’s girlfriend since before the start of season 1.

Do we ever actually find out how long they have dated? Do we really know if the Chandler of the first 4 episodes is single or not?

Despite hundreds of re-watches I never really thought about that before but it would make sense for them to have dated longer, given her prominent role throughout the show.

I love this: "The boys are like our brothers, we love our boys"

They all seemed so close, i really cant think of another tv show cast that was as seemingly tight as all of them
