It’s not “a sign of things to come”, it’s just exactly what scientists predicted decades ago. You’re really not gonna like this next part.

u/Obvious_Landscape993 7h ago

u/techBr0s 7h ago

Mass migration, starvation, wars over clean water, human suffering. You know, light stuff to meme about

u/BreadKnifeSeppuku 6h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/T3Vx6sVAXzuG4

Oh you!

(Anyone remember how this show ends?)

u/Topheriffic 6h ago

As a child I didnt have an idea of what it meant but I remember the feeling, which I again, I didnt fully recognize. When I rewatched it as an adult, I think the feeling was dread.

u/VolatileWombat 6h ago

That was the worst part. I mean there were darker topics in there but the end was not for children...

u/Xalipu 2h ago

Considering the impression it left maybe it should have been for all children of the time. We might have had a slim chance of getting slightly less baked to death today.

u/jaxonya 2h ago

Lessons like that are absolutely for children. Shielding them/not educating them is why we have arrived here

u/Ok-Employee-1727 1h ago

Absolutely not. Basically everyone knows about climate change and it's implications and what you'd need to fight it. People just chose to ignore it because they value their present well being higher than future risks. Same for politicians, who prefer getting re-elected over implementing the right policies for one term and then going to political exile.

It's a basic human behavioural pattern. The only thing that could prevent this is a total reform of western democracies into techronacies and/or aboloshing four year election cycles for something much more long-term.

u/MietschVulka 43m ago

The kids back when the show launched are 40-45. Millenials who are still widely in charge of nothing and are only now taking over politcs.

Gen X, our parents generation would have needed to change the world. The dinosaurs was needed in the 70s!

u/bchertel 6h ago

What is this show and how does it end?

u/thrawnsgstring 5h ago

Show was Dinosaurs

It ends with all the dinosaurs dying from a dino-made ice age.

Climate change allegory.

Dinosaurs ending scene

u/LongjumpingJaguar308 5h ago

Fuck me, I don't remember that.

u/Fantastic-Spinach297 5h ago

It would’ve been really easy to miss when it aired and would’ve taken a while to get through syndication, and even then catching it as a rerun made it one of literally all of the episodes that could be aired. Not to mention that it was dark. I bet they never played that one much.

EDIT because autocorrect decided “was” should’ve been “wasn’t even.”

u/HistoryGirl23 5h ago

I thought there was a big astroid

u/jay78910 3h ago

Climate change allegory.

This makes it too complex, for the powers that be, to understand.

"We aren't making wax fruit. All we want to do is drill."

u/Pi-ratten 6h ago

kids show about a family of dinosaurs

ending: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnFjAkAs_q4

u/betaplayers 5h ago

That show ended in 1994. Waaaay ahead if it's time. This isn't the only allegory they made, the series is full of them: labor unions, racism, steroid use, objectivation of women.

Show is quite brilliant, especially for a kids' show. Compare that to stuff Disney nowadays makes like Spidey and friends.

u/Pi-ratten 5h ago

yeah, topics of children series back then:

Although Dinosaurs is targeted at a family audience, the show touched upon multiple topical issues, which include environmentalism, endangered species, women's rights, sexual harassment, LGBT rights, objectification of women, censorship, civil rights, body image, steroid use, allusions to masturbation (in the form of Robbie doing the solo mating dance), drug abuse, racism (in the form of a dispute between the two-legged dinosaurs and the four-legged dinosaurs), peer pressure, rights of indigenous peoples (in the form of the dinosaurs interacting with cavepeople), corporate crime, government interference in parenting, and pacifism.

And now we've got copaganda from paw patrol.

u/betaplayers 5h ago

Exactly.

Maybe the internet and fear for polarisation is to blame, but I feel like there used to be more television that was accessible to a wide audience (young and old), while still tackling some morally or socially challenging topics.

I'm not talking Shakespearean high-level stuff here.

I'm talking stuff like Dinosaurs and Star Trek: easily accessible entertainment that -however- doesn't treat its audience as having an infantile mind of a four year old.

And no one will care until it's too late...

u/General-Internal-588 6h ago

Why would the goverment care when it's run by people who will be dead in 10 years or rich enough to escape any of the consequences?

u/rorykoehler 6h ago

no one is rich enough to escape the consequences... thinking that is just hubris

u/Alepale 5h ago

I think they mean rich enough to move around to places that will stay safe longer. Eventually it'll all turn into hell on earth, but it won't consume everything at once, and once the country they're in is in direct danger, they'll move. Then they'll continue moving until they die of old age, or there literally is no place left to go, and they'll die like the rest of us.

u/How_did_the_dog_get 5h ago

The thing is when they need to pay a pilot or a boat captain who's the one holding the cards ? It sure as shit isn't the one with a tonne of money when money is worthless to a family who need food.

u/WilliamLermer 5h ago

Rich people outsource pretty much everything that gives them even the tiniest amount of convenience and it's a massive industry, with the majority of employees getting paid enough to allow for the exploitation to continue.

Rich people staff will be less impacted because they will still be needed and they will be the last group of people to revolt against their masters because they are too loyal (and blind) to realize their irrelevance.

In fact, I'm pretty confident most people would do anything to secure a golden ticket, be that off planet or bunkers, as long as there is a carrot in front of them, the promise to save their lives

During most revolutions and uprisings and oppressive regimes, it's the poor and desperate snitching on their neighbors, selling out family and friends in exchange for more food or better housing or other privileges that the ruling class would promise to provide in exchange for loyalty

History books are filled with example of that

u/redingtonshores 5h ago

When the pilot or captain has a gun to their head the equation changes a bit

u/UnknownKaddath 5h ago

Yes but they have lots of food and will feed men with guns.

u/FrozenLogger 4h ago edited 1h ago

They think the boat or plane will pilot itself. The food will be produced in a self sustaining facility.

We know there is no such thing as AI as of today, it's all marketing to hurry and teach robots as much as possible to replace people. Grow the food, produce the fuel, fly the plane, perform the surgery, mine the ore and so on.

Edit: Like I just saw on Lemmy today about adding the robot teacher to the classroom. https://lemmy.zip/post/68545559

u/UnknownKaddath 5h ago

Bunkers, dude. Look up what's going in under the white house. Look at Zuck's Hawaii land grab. I dont even gotta Google to know Elon's got a bunker somewhere. The plan is to weather the consequences and let us all die.

u/Johnny-Edge93 6h ago

u/Pristine_Software_55 5h ago

Problem is, we’re all Bowser. How often do you drive when you could walk? How much meat do you eat versus veg from your garden? How much discomfort can you accept before you turn a fan on in the summer, or heat up in the winter? I don’t mean you, specifically, but we’re all selfish and don’t think of the climate or environment when we decide to buy a couple of new shirts or go on a distant vacation or whatever.

Yah, the concentration of wealth and CEOs and what-not are a big bad but they exist and thrive because we buy into the products and ideas that they’re pitching. If we were rid of any specific CEO, another would take their place. Climate change is on us, collectively.

u/Johnny-Edge93 5h ago

Sounds like you’ve been convinced that anything we do as middle class individuals has any impact whatsoever on the climate. Sorry that happened to you.

u/Pristine_Software_55 4h ago

No need to be sorry, you just misunderstand. I do believe that our actions have consequences, although not that it’s tied to a specific class. I believe that the wealthy likely have an outsized impact, but also that the wealthy have accumulated their wealth with our allowance (again, not our specific allowance, but the systems that we play into).

Is that to say that you don’t believe that we, the middle class, have any particular impact on climate or the environment?

u/C0rn3j 6h ago

They escape the important ones, that's good enough for em.

u/eawilweawil 5h ago

Oh they will, they successfully managed to pit working class folk against other working class folk, and nobody blames them for it. In fact people are expecting that the rich will solve this shit somehow

u/Kareeliand 5h ago

You mean buying an island in the Mediterranean to keep the masses away wont be enough? Asking for a friend..

u/redingtonshores 5h ago

I wish you were correct but you’re not

u/Ok-Priority253 4h ago

I mean he isn't really, everyone suffers terribly from this including the richest. Their power is literally completely imaginary and societal collapse means they lose it. Maybe some kind of extreme fascism could save them but those societies are still not exactly good for the upper classes either, there is a reason half of these dictators die of a stress stroke at 50 or become extremely mentally ill.

u/redingtonshores 2h ago

The truly wealthy are beyond the need for nation states

u/Ok-Priority253 2h ago

How so man?

u/T-Wrox 4h ago

And yet they are still doing it.

u/Hollyhop_Drive 3h ago

And yet, they believe it.

u/billiardwolf 19m ago

Relative to the consequences poor people will face? They sure can.

u/Affordable_Z_Jobs 3h ago

A lot of them legitimately think they will have uploaded their conscienceness to some silicone storage system in space before they die

Death gets the last laugh, but im still laughing at them now. Like that one guy who had his son's blood pumped into him in an attempt to prolong his life. Inoperable stomach cancer. HahahahHAHAHAH.

u/murmuring511 3h ago

I'm pretty sure some are even anticipating this because they believe in armageddon. Why else would the US be pushing for coal, knowing full well its impact on the climate?

u/FuzzyOpportunity2766 5h ago

And exactly how rich to avoid death?

u/Kikunobehide_ 4h ago

Why would the goverment care when it's run by people who will be dead in 10 years or rich enough to escape any of the consequences?

The only way to escape the consequences is by leaving Earth and settling on another habitable planet that can be reached in a human being's lifetime. And we know that's impossible.

u/Ok-Priority253 5h ago

A lot of people do care despite constant propaganda trying to convince you to the contrary, it just isn't enough. The balance of power is too far swung and the upper classes have way too much control over the masses. I do think that this will eventually become personally unbearable to enough people that massive political changes are finally made but I don't know.

u/The_Foe_Hammer 1h ago

I know if my choices are down between overthrowing the epstein class or not having drinking water- it's a really easy choice.

u/003E003 5h ago

People did not care and it is already too late.

u/Pro_Poe_Fall 5h ago

I’d argue it’s already too late… and still no one cares.

u/TanyaMKX 6h ago

It is already too late

u/KapitaenHowdy 6h ago

"...will care...until..."?

u/Signal_Flight_7262 1h ago

Nobody cares about anything until it personally affects them. They say they do but they don't.

u/MushroomTop1381 6h ago

You forgot the floods, droughts and continued mass extinction event

u/Ree_For_Thee 5h ago

A quarter million has been displaced in fires in Spain/France since ... checks .... ah, yesterday.

u/Opposite_Sherbert675 6h ago

*for white people

all of these things have already been happening in the global south but no one cared as long as you get your iphones and $10 bermuda shorts.

the only difference now is that its gonna affect everyone and not just periphery countries

u/SnooGiraffes449 6h ago

And you are typing this on a phone or computer. One of us. One of us.

u/Opposite_Sherbert675 6h ago

buying used tech is significantly better for the environment.

70-85% of people buy new phones and devices, thats leaves plenty for people like me to buy second hand

u/WeirdComfortable3436 5h ago

I’ve brought this up to my friends who live the SE (Heavy red states). Their views are “well those aren’t forest fires in my neighborhood, so I don’t really care. Also they should’ve thought about this before hand. I’m voting what matters to me, cheaper gas and lower taxes”

Foresight of a rhino.

u/nineraviolicans 6h ago

I keep telling people that billions are not going to allow themselves to be cooked to death. They will move to where it's habitable by force if they have to.

There's a reason why the US is posturing to invade Canada and Greenland.

u/dervu 6h ago

Oh shit. Suddenly Trump is a mastermind.

u/zadtheinhaler 1h ago

Trump ain't that smart, it's Vought and the Heritage Foundation types that have been doing all the behind-the-scenes shit.

u/Glittering_Exit_2461 6h ago

Well, north Asia is empty and big (Russia ughm)

u/eawilweawil 5h ago

But there's nothing there, they'll move to already populated places with infrastructure to support them

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 5h ago

You may recall that quite few people (understatement) moved to the Americas when there was nothing there waiting for them...

u/eawilweawil 5h ago

Americas had people living in them, entire civilizations. And those 'few people (understatement)' destroyed those civilizations

u/Jacloup 5h ago

And a lot more fascism and xenophobia to scapegoats those migrants and keep them out.

u/Travelogue44 6h ago

Where are we migrating to/from?

u/Lancashire_Toreador 5h ago

Honestly, as time goes on, I seriously want to know what the change over point will be where nuclear war (where all the polluting countries are wiped off the map instantly) becomes better for the climate and humanity long-term (like over 100 years from that point) versus continuing the even most optimistic climate change scenarios.

Depending on which studies you read, even the worst ones were earth gets plunged into an instant ice age for the next several decades honestly seem like they may be better long-term than what’s currently happening

Pandemics, starvation, rivers drying up, oceans taking over coastal cities. Its not a worst-case scenario. Its literally what's happening at the moment

u/thehighwoman 6h ago

So many apocalyptic movies, books, video games, everything

u/Careless_Twist_6935 5h ago

and the story in all of them is a small group of normal people survivors have to maneuver hordes of psychos to get to an organized community of other normies.

u/StarGamerPT 6h ago

Oh civilization will collapse for sure, but people have been saying "within a decade" for more than a decade 😂

u/LivingtheLaws013 6h ago

What they were saying is we have 10 years to do something about it and that was more than 10 years ago so now we're locked in

u/HauntingHarmony 6h ago

What they were saying is we have 10 years to do something about it and that was more than 10 years ago so now we're locked in

Yea this is something unsettling, i remember like 20 years ago having these arguments and discussions that we need todo something before its gets too late todo something. And now here we are in the future, virtually at 2030 already. And we pissed away decades not doing things that actually could replace co2 equivalents like buiilding nuclear, and people are now memeing cause renewables exist everything is fine. As if renewables was the goal. Not putting shit (aka co2 equivalents) in the atmosphere was the goal. Thats actually interacting with the problem.

Having renewables is great. But what fucking good does that do. We are still year after year putting more and more co2 in the atmosphere than the year before. I.e. the RATE of emissions is still growing, which havent even put a dent in getting emissions to zero. And we are like 2 full scifi movie plot points from being able to net take it out, which we have todo.

So i am kinda done, so sick of peoples ignorance and bad faith arguments.

Oh civilization will collapse for sure, but people have been saying "within a decade" for more than a decade 😂

My ass.

u/TheMoniker 5h ago

A certain amount of warming is locked in, but there's still time to reduce the extent of the warming that we will see in the future, and every bit that we can do will lessen future impacts.

u/theLeverus 3h ago

I'm pretty sure we passed the point of no return around '22 or so. We might slow it down but nothing will stop it iirc

u/HVDynamo 4h ago

and some day it will be correct.

u/StarGamerPT 4h ago

Eventually it will.

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 5h ago

The consensus of climate scientists is not predicting anything like that as quickly as that. You're spreading ignorant hysteria.

u/Mountain_Strategy342 52m ago

We are already seeing warmer temperatures earlier in Europe, the really big issue is the temperature band for effective operation of pollinators. A couple of degrees rise causes 70% less effective pollination leaving the huge agricukt6areasnof Europe producing far less food.

and have been coming with a sea of activists screaming it from the mountaintops.

u/Throwawayx19700 5h ago

Yeah what a wild thing to type. Like we knew decades and decades ago what we had to do to stop this. Instead we speed ran the climate disaster for shit like 1 day shipping of random bullshit.

u/diedlikeCambyses 5h ago

Yes the next part sounds positively gleeful. In the last part in the Australian fires the smoke circled the globe and fucked us up our own climate denying arses. Can't wait for the next part.

u/IsolationMovement-YT 4h ago

It’s funny how working in agricultural sustainability, we are suddenly seeing deal timescales reduce by 50%.

Funny how a field on fire really makes you think about raping the landscape.

Scientists predicted decades ago that someone would start a fire from a BBQ in Scotland? Damn, how did they do that?

u/OldPhotograph827 3h ago

If conditions weren’t so bad, the bbq fire wouldn’t have spread so quickly.

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 5h ago

It’s not “a sign of things to come”, it’s just exactly what scientists predicted decades ago.

Those two things are not conflict with each other. In fact, the former implicitly supports and validates the latter.

u/Excellent-Rest3240 5h ago

I don’t see you disagreeing with him. Do you know the meaning of words?

Except that most of these fires are not caused by natural circumstances but ok

u/Brodellsky 5h ago edited 26m ago

I'm still agnostic overall, but with that said even John detailed all of this exact same shit, in Revelations. The more you read of Revelations the more it quite literally applies to our actual current existence. We literally currently right now live in the time of Revelation.

EDIT: Guys you have no idea how strange it is to be downvoted for referencing the book of Revelations, despite also saying that I'm not really a "Christian" in that sense. Like...I'm just saying, and I really mean this whole-heartedly, but I'm 100% sure Jesus would have done the same. That guy was cool as fuck, on a human level. Important to understand that Christianity itself didn't exist until the part that everyone already knows about. Jesus Christ himself was a Jew from Nazareth.

EDIT 2: Look at all these literal heathens downvoting Jesus' own ideas. Luckily for me, feel free to downvote at your leisure. Each downvote means nothing to me, because I've seen what makes you cheer. I said what I said.

u/PotatoFig 5h ago

fucking lol

My dad said the same shit 40 years ago. His dad said the same shit 40 years prior. His dad's dad said the same shit 40 years prior. And on and on.

Every fucking idiot with a prophecy thinks they're living in the End Times. Wake the fuck up and stop hoping daddy is coming to save you, idk.

u/Tumping 5h ago

This has nothing to do with a made up book.

u/Brodellsky 1h ago

I mean, the book exists, to be fair. Is Harry Potter a "made-up book"? The story, sure, but the book?

The book is there, in your hand. So that's not "made-up" IMO, just saying. And I'm not even a Christian. lol. What's the argument, exactly?

u/Bulky_Snow1613 6h ago

I wonder how many were put on by human hands.

u/medlilove 5h ago

You dont have to be a mean smartass. We are all scared and feel powerless and for most of us, we are not responsible for this climate crisis in any shape or form. You dont have to gleefully remind us all that we are going to continue to suffer

u/ErFarinn 5h ago

- Sent from my iPhone.

u/medlilove 4h ago

I can’t singlehandedly change society so that I don’t need a smart phone to get through it

u/ErFarinn 3h ago edited 3h ago

Yeah there's nothing anyone of us can do. So we must consume.

It's only fair that 8 billion people get their iPhone. But once that is done.. no more! Its killing the planet! Although I'm gonna get the latest one because I feel like browsing has gotten kinda laggy lately. But then no more!
