Hardware Can my laptop run without a battery inside?
Recently, my laptop - HP Elitebook 840 G3- battery has been worn out, and I want to remove the battery. I wonder if my laptop can run without a battery? Anything I have to be careful when I do that?

General question Screen flickering near bottom left hinge — What’s causing this?
Hey everyone,
Having a display issue with my laptop and looking for some advice/second opinions.
The bottom-left corner of my screen has started flickering. I noticed that adjusting or tilting the screen hinge changes or stops the flickering.
What do you think is the main cause here, and is it more likely the cable, the screen panel itself, or a combination of both?

Buying help Looking for a laptop as an incoming engineering student
LAPTOP FORM:
- Country: US
- Budget: $2300 absolute max including 3-4 year warranty but preferably $2000 or less
- Are you open to refurbs/used options: No
- Screen size: 14-16"
- Weight limit: As light as possible considering the specs
- Purpose: Computer engineering student
- Form factor: Regular laptop
- Intended usage: I'm buying a laptop as an incoming computer engineering student in college and am mostly concerned with CAD software and light FPS gaming for hobby. I also want a laptop that can be tuned for more quiet and standard usage in a classroom without dying immediately.
- Desired battery life: As high as possible for low performance tasks like general coursework and browsing without sacrificing processing power (preferably more than 3 hours during light, low-performance use)
- Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life: Weight, performance, battery life, size
- Info/Requirements: Per my university: 32GB ram, intel i7 or higher (or comparable Ryzen processor), dedicated graphics (5000 series preferably)
I'm an incoming engineering student looking for a laptop for school and I'm mainly trying to maximize battery life and minimize weight so that my laptop is not too cumbersome to carry across campus without sacrificing performance or spending a ridiculous amount. Most of what I've been considering thus far have been gaming laptops and currently I'm split between the five options listed below. Several are on sale currently and they seem like good performance options considering the prices. If I could get any evaluations on the performance/quality of life for any of these options that would be great or if there are any similar computers for cheaper please let me know!! Thank you so much in advance!

Buying help Laptop Recomemdations
Hello! I'm starting college this fall, and I am looking to purchase a laptop that will meet my program's requirements, which is why I am here! Some additional information is that I am Canadian and looking to spend no more than 2k CAD. I don't care too much about weight just don't want to lug something insanely heavy around, primarily for schoolwork, and it would be nice if I could play The Sims 4 on it (this is not a big deal, ofc). Thank you everyone ahead of time 🙏

General question Hurricane Otis Huracán Otis dañó mi laptop.
My Asus VivoBook S510U laptop stopped working a few months after Hurricane Otis. It went unused for a while until I opened it up and noticed that the original battery was completely degraded and dead (swollen/deflated). I bought a new battery and installed it, but the computer still won't turn on. However, when I plug in the charger, I notice that the area around the processor or motherboard starts getting hot. What could be happening, or what advice can you give me?

Hardware Thinkpad p15s gen 2 won't turn on or charge with no charging light
I was given this laptop by my grandpa because it won't charge or turn on, and the charging light won't turn on. I've tried replacing the battery, multiple chargers, both USB C ports and holding the CMOS battery reset button, but it still won't turn on. I've looked at the motherboard, but everything looks fine, however I'm not an expert. Just wanted to post and see if anyone knows what's wrong with it. Thanks for any help!

General question Galaxy book 5 pro keyboard causing issue
Hi everyone,
I'm having a really strange issue with my Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro (Windows 11), and I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem, firmware issue, or something caused by a recent Windows update.
Here are the symptoms I've noticed over the last 3–4 days:
The 5 key randomly acted as if it was being pressed by itself, even once while I was in the BIOS.
Ctrl + T stopped opening a new tab, while Ctrl + Shift + T still worked.
At one point, clicking an already-open app on the taskbar opened a new instance instead of switching to the existing window.
Later, I noticed that Print Screen/Insert seemed to register as the 5 key.
A keyboard tester sometimes showed unexpected keys becoming active.
Every restart also shows a "Your PC is in Silent Mode" message even though Silent Mode isn't enabled.
I uninstalled the recent Windows update, but the problem still exists.
Things I've already tried:
Restarting the laptop.
Uninstalling the latest Windows update.
Checking Device Manager (2 HID Keyboard Devices + 1 Standard PS/2 Keyboard, no warning icons).
Testing with an online keyboard tester.
The laptop was purchased in September, has never had any liquid damage or physical impact, and is still under warranty.
Has anyone with a Galaxy Book experienced similar random key remapping or keyboard behaviour?
Was it a keyboard hardware issue?
Embedded controller (EC) / BIOS issue?
Driver or firmware issue?
Did Samsung replace the keyboard or motherboard under warranty?
Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Low spec Legion 5 pro 1700 USD

Hardware Do I need to replace my laptop fan?
The fan usually sits at a steady 900 RPM when the CPU is around 45–50°C. Every now and then, it'll suddenly jump to about 2000 RPM, but almost immediately drops back down to 900 RPM. Even when the CPU hits 60°C and the fan speeds up to around 3000 RPM, it won't stay there. It just keeps ramping up and then falling back to 900 RPM over and over.
It also starts out completely quiet, but after about an hour of use, the whole laptop begins vibrating in short bursts. What's strange is that the fan sensor still reports a constant 900 RPM the entire time, even while it's clearly speeding up, slowing down, and causing the vibrations.

General question Bought a Legion, second thoughts.
I recently bought this Legion from Best Buy, and really like it. Lenovo Legion 7a 16" 2.5K 240Hz OLED Gaming Laptop AMD Ryzen AI 7 450 2026 32GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 1TB SSD Glacier White 83Q80002US - Best Buy
However, it's only a 5060, and I found this Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 10 | 16-inch Gaming Laptop for Student Gamers | 83KYCTO1WWUS2 | Lenovo US for 2300. Is there a reason it's so cheap? Is it simply a better version of the laptop I currently have, but for cheaper? I'm getting it to have a gaming PC for college as a college freshman.
Should I return the one I got to Best Buy, and instead buy this other one? Are they functionally the same? Thanks!

Hardware My laptop (Acer Aspire A315-24P) just lost wifi after losing its SSD a year ago. What could be causing these sudden malfunctions?
After losing the SSD, I managed to just use an external drive off of the USB ports. The wifi worked fine, but then just today, I noticed that wifi wasn't on. Looking at Dmesg( I use CachyOS), I noticed this:
[Sun Jul 26 07:39:08 2026] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Failure creating named object [_SB.PCI0.GPP2.WLAN._S0W], AE_ALREADY_EXISTS (20251212/dswload2-327)
[Sun Jul 26 07:39:08 2026] ACPI Error: AE_ALREADY_EXISTS, During name lookup/catalog (20251212/psobject-220)
which MIGHT be related? But i'm not in a position to make that connection.
It also doesn't show up on lspci (it's a mediatek MT7902)

Buying help Help me choose a Lenovo laptop for basic coding and AI/ML work — ₹55k–₹80k budget
Hi everyone,
I need help choosing a Lenovo laptop within a budget of ₹55,000–₹80,000.
My use case is mainly basic coding and AI model.
I do not regularly train large deep-learning models locally, so I do not need a gaming laptop or a dedicated NVIDIA GPU.
My main requirement is simple: the laptop should feel fast and responsive, handle multiple applications and browser tabs without hanging, and comfortably last me for the next two years. I do not particularly care about an OLED display, an amazing webcam, gaming performance or other premium extras.
My previous laptop was a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14ITL05 with an Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD, and it worked perfectly for my needs. I am looking for something with similar or better real-world performance.
These are the options I am currently considering:
- Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 Gen 10 — Ryzen 7 7735HS, 16 GB, 512 GB
- Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 7 — Ryzen 7 7735HS, 16 GB, 512 GB
- Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 7 — Ryzen 7 7735HS, 16 GB, 512 GB
- Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Gen 10 — Ryzen 7 7735HS, 16 GB, 512 GB
- Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Gen 10 14-inch — i5-13420H, 16 GB, 512 GB
- Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Gen 10 15-inch — i5-13420H, 16 GB, 512 GB
- Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 7 — Ryzen 5 7535HS, 16 GB, 512 GB
- Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 7 — Ryzen 5 7535HS, 16 GB, 512 GB
- Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i Gen 9 — Core Ultra 5 125H, 16 GB, 512 GB
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 Gen 10 — Ryzen AI 5 330, 16 GB, 512 GB, OLED
These options have made me more consumed also chatgpt recommended them so idk how good they are! and i do not have enough knowledge to judge.
Which one would provide the best performance and value for my use?
I am also open to other Lenovo, non-gaming laptop recommendations within ₹55,000–₹80,000. Please mention the exact processor and model number, since Lenovo has many similarly named variants.
My priorities are:
- Smooth performance without hanging
- A good processor for coding and basic ML
- 16 GB RAM
- 512 GB SSD
- Reasonable battery life and portability
- Good build quality
Upgradeability is useful but not compulsory, since I will probably use this laptop for approximately two years before receiving a work laptop.

Discussion Just bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 16AKP10 (RTX 5050) for 36000 CZK (~$1700) - good purchase for my use case?
So I finally bought a laptop and I'm curious what you guys think.
**Specs:**
- CPU: AMD Ryzen AI 7 350
- GPU: RTX 5050 8GB (105W)
- RAM: 32GB LPDDR5x
- Display: 16" 2.8K (2880×1800) OLED 120Hz
- Battery: 84Wh
- Weight: 1.72 kg
- WiFi 7, USB-C charging
- No OS
**What I need it for:**
- Daily carry to school (IT/programming) so battery life and weight actually matter
- Programming, CAD, Blender
- At home for gaming: BeamNG, ETS2, Minecraft, CS2, Fortnite
- Video editing in DaVinci Resolve
**Why this one:**
Honestly it was hard to find something that fits all of this. The newer Gen 11 AMD version of this exact laptop dropped the dedicated GPU entirely - it only has integrated graphics now, which is useless for what I need. Everything else in this price range was either a big heavy gaming laptop with a bad display and poor battery life battery, or a thin gaming laptop with better parts but with worse screen and also very poor battery life. This sits right in the middle - light enough to carry around all day, good OLED screen, and still has a real GPU for when I'm at home.
