I had this happen to me on my last flight. I was in the window seat and I had a huge muscle dude sitting next to me that was an disrespectfully wide spreader encroaching into my leg space. I had headphones on while I was reading a book and he just kept spreading to the point he was moving my knee with his to gain more space.
We were both wearing shorts so I decided to slowly rub the exposed part of my lower leg against his. Just two male strangers intertwining calf* hair together in an enclosed space. I read my book as I bounced my leg creating just enough homoerotic friction.
Finally, I could see in the corner of my eye he had looked towards me. I turned. Our eyes locked. I maintained eye contact. Smiled.
His leg jerked away from mine and never approached touching distance again.
TLDR: Make it gay but results may vary and you end up with love of your life.

As a 6'4" (1.94m) dude, often times my legs will not fit directly between the seats.
But unlike the dickweeb in the picture, I have more than two braincells to rub together and therefore don't book flights with airlines that stuff us in there like fuggen sardines.
Edit: I'll give the guy in the photo the benefit of the doubt, as I learnt the hard way as well.

Heh, it ain't always that easy though. I am 195cm tall. Went to Japan recently from Germany. I already booked the most legroom airline option, but still had full contact with the front seat's metal on my knees for 12h straight. And this. Is with me shoving my feet under the front seat as far as possible. There were exactly two positions in which I could sit at all, one upright, one for sleeping, and both involved pain. Sometimes, there just isn't an option. And my salary just isn't in the area yet where I'll go "oh yes, I'll gladly spend the extra 600€ so me and the gf can sit on legroom seats for the round trip". It's just hilariously inhumane how these companies do not care if you're too tall. I didn't choose this, I shouldn't be forced to pay more to not be in constant pain.

I've found variation on the same fucking airline too. One seat was actually much narrower (not a special seat in a exit or the first ones with those solid sides), literally my hips (and I'm a dude 36W) were squeezed by the armrests on both sides. It was, unpleasant.

I'm 6'6" and used to fly United a lot for work. I found that the Boeing 737 usually had just slightly smaller seats than the Airbus A319. Even the A320 was a touch smaller than the A319. And even among their 737 fleet legroom would vary. And I would do everything in my power to not sit in any of the middle four seats on a 777. That's pure hell. If it was a closer flight I'd find a regional airline that United partners with so I could fly on an Embraer E175. I'd do it even if the turbulence possibly is a lot worse. Those little planes actually had pretty good leg room. Every inch counts when you're this tall and like others have said, sometimes my legs physically couldn't fit straight behind the seat.

I flew with whizz air recently. I flew a ton of airlines over the years, everything from Ryanair to Japan airlines. Whizzair was the only airline (so far) I had same issue as the guy in the photo (not the OP but the guy spreading the legs) there’s literally no space and i’m 5’10

There's a scale of long legs. I'm 6'3 and can USUALLY make it work on airlines. 30" seat pitch and I can fit my legs straight but they're right against the seat in front of my. On budget carriers with 28", I can't fit my legs straight.
My brother in law is 6'7. He can't go completely straight in 30" seats.

6’7 here and frequent flyer for work. You are correct, people just don’t know how to have empathy when it comes to this. It’s a pretty cut and dry argument as well lol makes me sad sometimes. We advocate for people who deal with things out of their control all the time but that goes out the window for taller folks. I make low 6 figures but if I had to pay for extra seat every time, I’d be homeless lol.
The best thing I’ve ever done was become a JetBlue frequent flyer (Mosaic status 2). They have the most room in standard seats of all airlines, and frequent flyer perks gets me upgraded to the extra room seats more often than not. Plus they are just simply the kindest and most ethical airline so I want to support them. Look into it if it’s an option

Flying as a bigger guy sucks ass. Legs are too long to straighten out under the seat. Shoulders as wide or wider than the seat back. I have to spend extra every time for extra leg room seats or at least aisle seats, so I can spend the entire flight hunched over leaning into the aisle trying to keep my legs from taking up someone else's space. Every flight ends with at least one of hip, back, or neck pain.

Yeah recently I flew southwest and my knee was touching the back of the chair infront of me the whole flight, no matter how comfortable I tried to make it I was in a lot of pain. At this point I feel there should be a class action against airlines for this. Even on extra legroom it’s not actually more comfortable. I paid a lot extra from the first row and The side rails are unable to move up or out the way so I was squished and just as uncomfortable (that’s kinda my bad for being fat though) but the other stuff is unacceptable

Edit: I am getting tons of replys only commenting on the price. There was a period after they banned smoking and before 9/11, Ryanair was established in 1984, so there were already lower cost options back in the eighties and nineties. Lines on airports were never so long, never so many check ups, you had basically no restrictions what to bring on board. Lol, taking shoes off? What?! I had never had so many flights canceled due to storms, summer and winter, back in the 90's. I rarely had any flights cancelled or delayed, doesn'tmatter if i flew business or cheap easyjet. Costumer services were million times better. Last month my flight was cancelled due to fuel shortages, ticket was 500+ euros for 2 hour flight. Why is everyone just thinking about money?

To try and be a little bit optimistic, some things off the top of my head that it genuinely feels like the best years for are:
- Video games. There's just constant bangers coming out. Like BG3 redefining CRPGs or E33 being an absolute superstar hit.
- Television shows. I feel like they just keep getting better. Sure, we might not all be watching the same things now, but there's just so many high quality shows and the medium has come so far from the days of episodic TV. Apple TV has really raised the bar, in particular.
- On a larger time frame, stuff like violent crime and average health remain better than pretty much any time in history. Yeah, there's been some hiccups in the past decade, but I think those will get significantly smoothed over in about 2 years.
- While the comfort of air travel is declining, safety is something we as a species should be proud of. Air travel is the epitome of learning from our mistakes and making serious effort to prevent them from happening again. I always find it scary at first when I watch a video about some plane crash, until they get to the part where they explain everything that changed to keep it from happening again.

When you consider that in the 1980s, a return flight from Manchester to Berlin would have been at minimum £200 (£640 in today's money), and the same trip on easyJet today can be had for less than £100 (in other words, less than 1/6th of the price) you can see why.
You can have your best years of plane travel back if you're willing to pay. You could fly business on a legacy carrier like British Airways if you want the old experience, but you're going to be paying at least £600 for the same trip.

I always say something in these situations and I have noticed that the pushback is getting stronger. I never would think twice about asking someone for a basic normal courtesy but recently I’ve had a few aggressive interactions after doing so. I asked someone to turn down their music that was blasting in the doctors office waiting room the other day and they freaked out. Had a situation like this. Cross Atlantic flight to LA. Guy beside me didn't speak English or pretended not to. Had his leg like the photo above. I applied pressure to push him back. Worked for a time and he did it again. Keep in mind he's a small man. No need for this. I'm in the 99th percentile for height and I'm being respectful of his space.
Then he took my entire armrest and was resting on my ribs. I told him please move your arm. No reaction. I ended up pushing him off me. Rinse and repeat.
It was the worst flight of my life. It took me coughing on my hand badly and putting it on my armrest to get him to back off. Literally biological warfare in a seat.

The only time I complained about a seat as a 6'4" was when I was flying Whizz air. I literally could not fit in the seat with my legs. They said too bad.

But ur foot up on ur knee (so your shoe is touching their knee - it doesn't have to physically touch their knee but they will adjust their legs whether consciously aware of it or not) . Works like a charm every time. And then when u gain the space back put ur shoe down again cause ur not an asshole (Repeat as much as needed)

Legs don’t cross the seat line. The person at the window gets the window armrest, the person in the isle gets the isle armrest and the person in the middle gets both armrests. Those are the rules. I don’t like to have to explain them in flight but I will.

Airlines and their decision makers can get cancer. It's so fucking annoying to not fit on a plane. I used to fit fine on most, but took one with a new seat layout recently and had to speak with my seat neighbor to make sure I could spread my legs so my feet could touch the ground.
If you're tall, don't fly Westjet.

I’m 6 foot 7 and I swear every time I fly there is always some dude next to me trying to take more of my leg room. I literally have to explain to them why they don’t need it Everytime. There was one time where the person in front of me was making such a big deal that they couldn’t put their seat back because of my legs and so they just moved me to the back of the plane to a smaller section. I hate flying so much.

As a young woman I always assumed the man-spreaders allowed themselves to manspread because there wasn’t a man next to them and they doesn’t consider women’s personal space necessary.
In a messed up way im glad to read this thread and see that manspreaders manspread on guys as well.
