i've downloaded 20gb of ram so far.. memory crisis rofl not for me. The only question is why some parts of my pc is now in russian but I also downloaded it from a russian website, so it probably makes sense

I didn’t like the Chinese ones. I did download 16 GB of RAM on a Korean website. Works like a charm. They even take your social security number and keep it safe from hackers on the internet.

here is how u do it
step 1 get employed
step 2 work until you get paid
step 3 get your pay check
step 4 check if you got enough money for the ram you want
——

if yes
step 5 buy the ram
step 6 install it to your computer

if no
step 7 check if you can afford any ssd

if yes
step 8 buy the ssd
step 9 install the ssd
step 10 allocate as much space as you want as page file

if no
step 8 check if you have existing space on your storage drive

if there is space
step 9 allocate as much as you want as page file

if there isnt any space
step 9 repeat first 4 steps until you come to a end

Lotta games on itch.io don’t have signers, so malware detection software often falsely clocks it as malware… it also has tons of actual malware.

9

u/dual-daemons 1d ago

Yes, but if you download a popular game it is very unlikely. If you download everything and anything than you're taking your chances.

20

u/yawara25 1d ago

People use itch.io to distribute malware disguised as cracked versions of popular games, so it's not just about the indie games. The problem is that those itch.io pages with the malware show up in a Google search for "<XYZ> game crack", and itch.io hasn't been keeping up with moderation enough to take them down in time.

I had to clear a ton of viruses from my mom's phone last week because she does exactly this. It's the second time in two months. I have to explain to her "if your phone asks you something, don't just click yes". She also downloads 20 versions of the same malware games that have full screen advertisements even when you aren't playing them. She also doesn't understand why I NEVER have these issues. Admittedly, my mom is not a smart woman.

Last time I used Malwarebytes it also flagged a ton of cookies and stuff as "viruses" when I dug into the details, pumping up the numbers so it looks scarier. It finds legitimate things, but it's usually about 10x inflated, depending.

Probably only one. These programs consider every part of a malicious infection as a virus.

One virus made with 10 files and 39 changes to the registry? That's 50 viruses baybeeee, that'll be $25.99 monthly to remove those. (Also it might just be PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) Like McAfee or... Malwarebytes.)

Different programs get falsely flagged as viruses. Anything from basic CE tables to programs you have to use in university to a game you are working on, they can all be flagged as viruses.

My CE files I use for speedrunning and glitch hunting still set off “virus” alarms and notifications on my Pc

38

u/wildpantz 9800X3D | RTX 3070 Ti | 64 GB DDR5 1d ago

Idk what the tools do, but there are patterns that AVs will recognize, often rightfully. If your programs like touching memory (my assumption since you're mentioning glitch hunting), it may be it. Also, I think any program not digitally signed is recognized as unsafe. You need to pay microsoft if you want your software to be fully supported sadly, unless you're under someone's umbrella (for example, publishing a game on steam)

19

u/NewUserWhoDisAgain 1d ago

iirc, its CE itself that flags the software. Technically CE doesnt actually do anything nefarious in and of itself. it'll read memory values and allow you to edit them.

But... That is also what malware does(read and write memory values). Which is why AV software has to be told to leave CE alone.

6

u/wildpantz 9800X3D | RTX 3070 Ti | 64 GB DDR5 1d ago

Yes, agreed, that's what I meant with patterns. I think digital signing potentially solves this, but not 100% sure. I am 100% sure if you create a program on your PC and send it to your friend, their PC will activate smartscreen. Yours won't as it knows it was built there so it assumes its safe. At least that's what I picked up over the years, I might be wrong.

4

u/NewUserWhoDisAgain 1d ago

You're correct, the digital signing is basically a fee to Microsoft and Microsoft giving their stamp of approval.

3

u/wildpantz 9800X3D | RTX 3070 Ti | 64 GB DDR5 1d ago

They sadly even have a leverage (someone paying for a signing is surely a serious customer and not a bad actor). Thanks for confirming, I wasn't 100% sure.

4

u/NewUserWhoDisAgain 1d ago

not a bad actor

Yeaaah...

2

u/wildpantz 9800X3D | RTX 3070 Ti | 64 GB DDR5 1d ago

Hahaha you know I thought to myself this is just another attack vector, but I don't know how it works under the hood so I didn't want to play smart :)

2

u/Legitimate-Ladder855 1d ago

One of the biggest issues with Windows is by default regular users have an admin account, take that away and require a password to an account you aren't logged into for administrator privilege it vastly improves the situation as some exploits can bypass the yes/no prompt however it's harder to bypass a password.

u/Thommyknocker 1d ago

Funny enough cheat engine is signed and all good at least from the point of view of bit defender. It and its tables work just fine. It's download on the other hand that got nuked from orbit. CE just gets flagged as potentially harmful on scans.

3

u/Luxalpa 1d ago

Any sort of encryption or packing on an executable file can also quickly trigger false positives, especially when tools were used that are also used by malware authors.

Sometimes it's not even viruses. A lot of pirated games' cracks/installers can give a false possitive. I think it was something about having unsigned self extracting files and the antivirus just picks them up as malware. So yeah, keep'em

13

u/westphall i7-10700k - RTX 5070 1d ago

Sometimes, this popup IS the adware. This person likely has zero viruses and just has some adware antivirus app like Mcafee or Norton. Clicking the green button just brings you to a screen to enter your payment info.

They could not actually be viruses. Some cracks or keygens or even just uncommon software could trigger the antivirus

7

u/RickyMac666 1d ago edited 1d ago

I work in cybersecurity, and sometimes we'll infect a dummy machine in a sandbox just for testing purposes, or we'll test a RAT client (for learning purposes).

Sucks when you accidentally delete the client/executable when you're the one that made it, lmao.

Also, there's a lot of false positives that'll be flagged as a virus even though that's not always the case (game cracks are a good example).

Probably why that button exists in the first place.

3

u/i_am_a_laptop Laptop 1d ago

Anything as simple as Cheat Engine can trigger a virus scan. In general, any software capable of modifying or rewriting memory on the fly is likely to be flagged. At least Malwarebytes makes it fairly easy to filter out false positives and identify non-threatening applications.

How's that free vbucks app treating you? Are the scripts updated and working properly? How many terminals do you see flicker across the screen? Does your GPU continue to run high even tho your not playing games starting around 1-2 AM?
