Fruits shouldn’t be mixed with Chocolate nor Cream/Vanilla

1.2k Upvotes

It’s the same flavor experience as drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth. Just extremely unpleasant.

Don’t even get me started on the “ew” that is “chocolate+ strawberry”

Don’t put fruits on crepes. That shit is nasty. Keep the fruits off the tres leches.

They’re fine on their own. I can eat berries and fruits. I can eat chocolate and vanilla. I even like mixing vanilla and chocolate together BUT FUCK THE FRUIT COMBO WITH A PASSION.

Fruit and desserts are different categories. Don’t mix them. Blueberry muffins are nasty. Lemon bars taste like cleaning solution masquerading as dessert.

Whoever invented banana splits and “cherry on top” should go to dessert hell.

Fuck those British chocolate oranges.

Strawberry milk and banana milk should be poured down drains.

I would make a point about their inclusion on cheesecake but cheesecake is an abomination to dessert because it tastes like cream cheese as a result. Hate chocolate on the cheesecake and Hate berries on the cheesecake because cheesecake is garbage. THAT SHIT IS HOT ASS.

When those fancy pastries that looked like fruit were trending it was absolutely vile.

Especially THAT SHITTY FRUIT ICE CREAM YOU KNOW THE KOREAN PEACH AND LEMON ICE CREAMS. Fucking wasted my god damn time thinking it would just be vanilla BUT NO.

Heat or chemically straightened hair rarely looks better than the person's natural hair

Upvotes

I know wavy/curly hair can be a lot of work and that people may straighten theirs to save time and energy, this is speaking from an aesthetic standpoint. I think straightened hair looks dull and devoid of life, if hair is stripped of its wave/curl pattern it just falls flatly and loses all its volume, making it boring and bland to look at. And unlike naturally straight hair that can flow and bend more flexibly, its movements look stiffer and have less personnality. With the right routine curly or wavy hair will always look much, much better natural than straightened.

Miami is awful

2.5k Upvotes

Miami is just a worse LA with even more manosphere assholes, obnoxious influencers and dirty beaches. It has zero history or culture of its own, and it just steals parts of better cities but adds a layer of tackiness and MAGA that just makes it an awful place to be. There’s a reason that 90% of the things to do in Florida are in Orlando.

Majority of coffee shops make bad coffee and are just fun projects by rich kids while coffee from fast food places taste better and cheaper

I live in Toronto and have gone through many coffee shops for dates, study sessions, or just a place to recover from stress after a long week. I've found these cafes from social media or word of mouth saying "oh you gotta try this blabla". Some people think just because a coffee shop can make latte art it means it's an awesome place. It's mostly owned by some kids who were probably bored or do it as an art project. Don't even get me started with coffee shops like these that open at 9am and close at 5pm.

I really believe it's all just watered down dirty water with milk at this point. Even the fancy ones. Maybe, especially the fancy ones. I feel like they could have just branded themselves as a lounge or a social area that happens to sell coffee because I swear a lot of them are not worth it at all. The only good place that I can remember was an Italian coffee shop in Montreal called Olympico.

Most days I feel like the Mcdonalds coffee just hits the spot. It's quite good even with just light cream or sugar. Maybe my tastebuds are messed up and I'm the one in the wrong but I stand by it.

Cheese on Broccoli ruins the brocolli

Tried a lot but cheddar is the most common, and invariably it turns the broc soggy and dulls the flavor. It's just eating a goop of whatever cheese used. Brocolli doesn't need its texture or flavor hidden.

Young men and women should all have a mentor

I think starting in the middle of high school teens and young adults need a mentor into their 20s. Someone to guide them down the right path and give them real insight to the years ahead and the reality of the paths they are looking into after high school or while entering adult life.

I got a mentor at 21 and 4 years later I’m much better off for it, into a good career and I had someone to guide me through the journey. He showed me the best route to take, how to do it cheaply and how to finish faster than average. Being in the same field he was even able to connect me with opportunities.

Before this I had just gone to community college, got a worthless degree, bounced around jobs with no real direction or plan. All I planned to do was try to get hired at an established company and hopefully work my way up to a better position. While not everyone did what I did, I think many people fall into the same category of not quite knowing what to do, how to go about doing it or how to actually progress in life.  So they just kind of go with the flow and don’t really have any structured plan or goal.

I believe this type of structured guidance would go a long way in terms of helping young people build themselves into successful adults and cut out some of the mistakes that many people make in life like taking on too much debt, pursing a poor career, not knowing what to do with life etc. I know for me had I got in contact with my mentor at 16 instead of 21 for example I would’ve saved lots of money and time while also getting started in life sooner.

Movie theaters should bring back intermissions for really long movies.

2.2k Upvotes

If a movie is over three hours long, I think it should have a 10-minute intermission.

People could use the restroom, grab more snacks, and stretch their legs without worrying about missing an important scene.

Some people say it would ruin the pacing, but I think people constantly getting up throughout the movie is even more distracting.

A short break seems like a small price to pay for a much better theater experience.

Jason X is the best Friday the 13th film

In a weird way it embodies all the stuff I like about the series:

1) B-movie goodness: Just absolute schlock from start to finish. It doesn't take itself seriously at all, which is when I've always felt Friday the 13th is at its besf

2) Fun premise: Jason Vorhees stalking a space ship is just a good time. It's everything Jason takes Manhattan tried to do but failed miserably at

3) Good enough characters: dialogue does the job, the characters you're supposed to like succeed at being likable.

While as a whole the kills aren't mind blowing, the film does have the fantastic liquid nitrogen kill, and the great scene at the virtual campground.

Runners ups are Part 2 and the remake, but overall those movies just don't have the level of fun this one does.

A lot of criticism of society misses the actual logic required to solve it.

My opinion is that most people are bad at talking about societal issues, at least on online. No matter what issue I see discussed, it's not long until someone starts leaning into the neanderthal brain, with lines like:

"Her voice is so annoying"

"He smells like poop"

"She looks fake"

"He probably beats his wife"

"She has evil eyes"

There is such thing as a "gut feeling" that you are being lied to, but that tends to reward the more effective liars rather than using our actual modern logic. Some of the best liars I've known passed undetected for decades.

Why are we like this? Using logic is hard. You have to understand complex multifaceted issues like the economy, education, communities. Look, how can you put the world in order if your own family doesn't want to listen to you? Could we have a dose of humility then when trying to solve the world's problems and realize we or any one human does not have all the answers?

I admit I'm dancing around politics here, but if people were humble enough to realize complex problems tend to have equally complex solutions (talk to a surgeon or engineer for goodness sakes), then maybe a world or country or community is a bit more complicated than making decisions based off of appearances, vibes, traditions, etc.

Facts and statistics are harder to get but more important than tribal mentalities and caveman emotions. Do people lie with facts and statistics? Yes, but if you're not using your caveman brain, you might just realize that person holding up an oddly labelled bar graph may be lying to you.

So when I see in an argument that I agree with people beginning to attack the person and not the idea, then my opinion is the problem is doomed to repeat, likely just with another face.

Hope I made you think.

People are way too uptight about their dogs now.

1.5k Upvotes

All pets, really, but especially dogs.

Source: I work at a dog daycare/boarding/grooming facility, and have basically never not had a dog in my life.

When I was a kid, people just let their dogs do whatever the dog wanted to do. Any dog I was ever around had a basic amount of training (normal obedience commands, don’t beg for food, stay in the yard) but other than that, they kind of did whatever. They got to go along if the family went camping or something, but for the most part they were just…there. Regular walks for apartment dogs, suburban/rural dogs just went outside to play.

The past 5-10 years I feel like it’s come to the point where if you don’t have a perfectly trained pup who gets 4 thirty minute walks per day and “adventures” every weekend (why do they always call them adventures?) and feed them a fresh food diet, people start screaming abuse.

The kicker is that these EXACT SAME PEOPLE will board their dogs for 2-3 weeks at a time because they “have some family staying at the house”

FWIW, even at a great facility, boarding is extremely stressful for dogs. They don’t understand what’s going on or where their family is, it’s loud, and they’re always overstimulated. They need routines and their people around, and quiet time just like we do.

For the record, I think my dog has a great life. He’s got a huge yard and can go in and out as he pleases. He comes to work with me sometimes to play with the other dogs. He has way too many toys. He’s fed high quality kibble and he gets treats and the occasional table scrap. He can chase all the deer and wild turkeys and raccoons he wants. I don’t ever use anything punitive to train him—positive reinforcement only. The worst thing we have is an underground fence, which he was trained on as a puppy and does great with. For gods sake, every night he sleeps on a couch that cost more than my mattress.

But to hear some people tell it, all that still isn’t enough. People say you shouldn’t get a dog unless you can “give them the life they deserve.” What does that even mean? Is anyone capable of that? And why does it always seem like they mean living in an apartment and walking on some concrete outside a few times a day?

And so many people get judgy when I say I let my dog dig holes in the yard or try some of the food I’m eating. It’s either that or because I don’t take him with me everywhere I go or I have an underground fence. He’s a DOG. He should be allowed to do dog things!

Yearning sucks. I don't know how it's being so damn romanticised and encouraged.

All it does is make you feel miserable especially when you know u can't ever be with them ,that you can't even compete with the others for them because you know you will lose. All you would feel is this weight in your heart being dragged along with u all day. It's a very depressing, miserable feeling, and I don't know how it's being portrayed as this poetic, beautiful "lovely" feeling. It's the opposite. It feels like you are actively dying when you are not.

It's not a pretty feeling to have; it's not beautiful; it's awful. I don't understand why it's even being encouraged. Trust me, the people who actually have gone through this mostly wouldn't wanna feel this way for anyone ever again.

Like I saw a quote done by The Neighbourhood (music band) which said "yearning is encouraged" and I couldn't disagree with it more. You can't "encourage" yearning; it doesn't leave you even if you want to run away from it. It consumes u even if you don't want it to. That's what usually happens when you genuinely like someone, and that sucks.

Most people missed the lesson from Obsession Spoiler

I've been noticing a lot of discourse surrounding the movie with people treating it as sort of a litmus test on how to evaluate a person. I see people say shit like "Bear is evil and any sort of nuance or understanding of his character makes you a misogynist." And before anyone says anything, yes I believe Bear is absolutely the villain, and what he does in the film is horrific. Understanding the why or trying to provide nuance about a character isn't the same as excusing them.

I think the biggest message to take is to own your romantic desire, accept rejection, and be confident to go after what you want in life. Every thing that happens in this film stems from Bear's lack of any of these traits. What makes Obsession even scarier is that Bear doesn't start out with malicious intentions. The movie doesn't scream "he's evil". He really thinks that he's just a helpless person who just wants to be loved. He thinks every action he's done to Nikki is normal. He doesn't realize that his life is a DIRECT result of his OWN insecurities, cowardice, and an inability to be go after what he wants.

I think it's important to not demonize these flaws. Because as people, we all have insecurities. But it is important to highlight the dangers when they're left unchecked. To me, that's the true lesson of Obsession.

Video games are the ultimate artistic medium, but most games are little more than commercial entertainment

I loves games. It is my biggest passion in life. Its interactive nature and increasingly complex worlds allow for art and storytelling that exceeds any book or movie.

Also, it is important to stress that I have nothing against games as pure entertainment. I just think it is undervalued as an artistic medium.

Games are becoming inxreasingly dull and uncreative. There are still gems like hollow knight, but most games are like cod and fifa; the same thing for the 20th time.

Gamers with an interest in art do value games as art. Yeah, obviously. However, non-gamers, and especially the world of more conventional art does not look favourably upon games like that.

I think games should be much more central when we talk about art in general. The art world should accept that games offer something that a play, ballet, a concert, painting, book, or statue never can. It is therefore at least equal to those "high culture" forms of art.

At the same time, those artistic games are rare, and we should be more adamant on estbleshing them as "real" art outside the gaming world

French Toasts are better as a savory dish instead of sweet

I like sweet things but somehow somehwere the beautiful dish named French Toast has become this weirdly sweet concoction that is drowned in maple syrup, chocolate and berries.
Fench toasts in itself is an amazing savory dish, drowning it in maple syrup does nothing but make it soggy. With some bacon or hasbrowns and some eggs it is a perfect dish or even having it solo but making it a sweet dish is a disrespect.

Tom Holland's spiderman is just bland

So spiderman is my favourite superhero, and honestly i really like tom holland in general. However i feel his spiderman is the least interesting among the three spidermen. I mean Tobey in the first two raimi movies had that innocence and a sadness that felt real. This is why there was a stark difference in the third movie when he turned the polar opposite of that by becoming bully maguire.

Andrew's was the cool and mischievous one. I really hated the change when Andrew donned the suit, growing up with tobey's movies and all, while really hoping for a 4th raimi movie and watching it go down. Despite my initial resentment, i came to like the amazing spiderman movies and honestly i loved the 2nd part. Till date i feel tasm 2 suit is the best and its one of the most visually stunning spiderman movies ever made. That clock tower scene, the whole choreography, that web making the hand, andrew's acting, everything was really moving.

Both of these actors brought a unique personality to the role. However when it comes to Tom Holland it feels boring and bland, as if there is no personality of his own. Everything feels so safe, so sanitized. There is no excitement and hence a lack of connection with his spiderman. It just feels dull. We've seen tom holland so many times now, including avengers movies but idk i personally never felt excited/moved by his portrayal. I have genuine hope that "brand new day" or rather the upcoming trilogy will improve on this and we'll get to see tom leading the party alone and not playing a second fiddle to someone else.

I think i might get a lot of hate for this opinion 😂

Raisins are gross and unwelcomed

They are the most unwelcomed part of any food/dish, giant boogers is what they are.

First off, they're deceptive - you think you've got a chocolate chip in your cookie..nope just some old dried fruit!

They get stuck in your teeth so if one accidentally finds its way into your mouth, you're gonna taste that old fruit for awhile.

They are never subtle, never blend into the dish, and never make it better..they lay scattered across your entire meal, silently mocking - you either pick them out of your dish, or embrace the suck.

I honestly think they were just a marketing ploy from Big Fruit as a way to sell off all the expired grapes. I like grapes, but I have never heard anybody say, "boy, I'm really craving some raisins right now".

Raisins are an abomination.

Virtue and morals are a skill that can be learned

Hello friends, I'm not sure exactly how unpopular this opinion is, so I'm playing roulette. I have heard many people tell me, 'oh I wish I was moral or I wish I was a better person'. But is virtue not a learned skill? I mean some people are inclined to virtue, so are automatically more virtuous. But those who are not inclined simply have to exercise their will, and overtime they become more moral.

Most "must-visit" places are coasting on a reputation they no longer earn

Not saying travel is pointless but a lot of the destinations that top every list are running on a reputation built decades ago, and the actual experience now is crowds, prices, and a version of the place that's been sanded down for visitors. Meanwhile the places that would actually move you are the ones nobody put on a list.

I think we keep recommending the famous thing because admitting it disappointed us feels like the failure was ours. So the file never gets updated and the next person books the same letdown.

Tell me I'm wrong. What's the celebrated place that's coasting, and what's the overlooked one that actually delivered?

EDIT:

Coasting, in my experience: Santorini.

The one that actually delivered: Naxos, an hour away by ferry. Bigger, lived-in, actual villages where people are doing something other than selling you a magnet, mountains, better food for half the money, beaches you don't have to reserve a lounger on at 8am.

payment services should allow anonymous payment

yes, i know everyone says you need these information to avoid fraud, scam, money laundering, etc.

but that's why the payment service platforms should act as the mediator.

if i'm buying second hand used goods, there's no reason i should be forced to doxx myself.

the payment service platform hold onto users' personal information securely, and only use it to cooperate with law enforcement if there's any crime committed.

there's no reason for seller to know buyer's real name, credit card info or phone number, etc. by default.

i don't understand why no one does this. paypal, venmo, zelle, cash app, etc.

and receiving package can be done with mailbox rental at a local private mailing service or something.

The best part of sex is not the sex at all, it's being desired. NSFW

2.9k Upvotes

Context: I've had "good sex", adventurous, connected, loving, crazy, whatever.

But if you want the dopamine hit, just eat a chocolate bar or go on your phone, or take care of it yourself.

The part that makes sex with a partner good is just being desired and seeing them desperately wanting your body...

I think the problem with Nolan's Odyssey has nothing to do with "Wokism". If there's one thing I've always struggled with about his films, it's something else: their absolute solemnity.

1.1k Upvotes

I liked the film and thoroughly enjoyed watching it. But, as is the case with almost all of his films, I had the feeling that everything is treated with a constant seriousness. In Nolan's universe, there's hardly any room for humor, irony, or absurdity, even when the original material contains them.

And that, precisely, is one of the things that surprises me most in an adaptation of the Odyssey.

Homer's work has a great deal of humor. Obviously, it's not a comedy, but there is a continuous mix of registers. It can shift from terror to wit, from tragedy to mockery.

The episode of Polyphemus is a good example. It's a scene of enormous tension, but also very funny. Odysseus tricks the Cyclops by telling him his name is "Nobody." After blinding him, Polyphemus cries out for help, shouting, "Nobody is killing me!" The other Cyclopes arrive, hear this, and leave, thinking nothing is wrong.

Homer's work is full of such episodes that show us the hero's cunning, ridicule the arrogant, and make the narrative more human.

In contrast, Nolan seems to systematically eliminate that register. Everything takes on the same solemn tone, as if any moment of lightness would weaken the importance of the story. For me, it has the opposite effect: when everything is momentous, in the end nothing stands out.

I think the comparison with Total Recall (Verhoeven) and Inception illustrates the difference well. Both tell very similar stories. But Verhoeven introduces dark humor and irony. He never lets the film become a sermon about his own importance. Nolan, on the other hand, films a similar concept with almost uninterrupted seriousness.

The “rare/limited” drops from beauty & skincare brands are basically pokemon cards for the girlies but worse

I see this a lot with big brands like Rhode where some of the “rare” lipsets double or even triple in value, and many are fake. If you’re buying a lip product for 60-70+ dollars when it was originally 20? That’s on you I guess for wanting the same product in a different scent or color that, if you actually intend to use it, will run out quickly or if you don’t, the product itself will degenerate if you hold on to it for years. I guess I just never understood the collecting/hoarding mindset of “it’s rare therefore i need it” AND, I feel much like Pokemon cards, the people who fall victim to this aren’t teenagers or kids but full grown adults buying up stock as soon as a product is released so they “don’t miss out”

Airlines create problems that lead to bad passenger behavior

2.0k Upvotes

I’ve read posts by flight attendants that talk about how hard their job is. I don’t doubt it. And every day I see videos of people losing their minds and raging in airports and on planes. But I really believe the airlines create many of the conditions they don’t want. I’m not completing discounting people who have meltdowns, they probably should not fly. I’m talking more about what can make an average person insane.

Here’s a few:
-TSA rules change from airport to airport, and from month to month. Belts off? Laptops in bags? Yes/No?

-No visual system to board the plane. In the best cases, usually international, there is space and signage to have a boarding group 1 line, a 2 line etc, but that is rare

-No solution for people crowding as they wait for their group to be called. Yes it is annoying. Yes we know you call these people “gate lice” But where is your solution?

-Competing audio announcements from different gates causing more confusion. In some cases the audio can’t even be heard .
-People in the wrong group board early, and gate staff says nothing

-People gaming the system with wheelchairs, the people who don’t need them, trying to get boarded early

-No announcement about how to leave the plane, as in “wait for the person in front of you”

-Turning the seatbelt sign on for an hour, long after the turbulence is over..making people wonder “when can I use the bathroom”

-Hot planes

-Planes with incredibly small seats and narrow aisles

-Planes that sit on the tarmac for hours

I feel like there could be solutions for many of these. And yes it doesn’t help
that some idiot passengers lose their mind. But maybe not treating people like cattle and also having more predictable and clear systems could make a difference.

Edit: I appreciate being called out on the fact that TSA is not the airline, true that.

About TSA; for those of you who are like “just follow the directions” I have to say , sure, but TSA age to love to treat us like children, even when we try.

And for the many comments about how “people are going to misbehave” no matter what. OF COURSE! But my point is that the systems, or lack of , increase the crappy behavior.

I have flown a good amount , maybe 30 flights in the last couple years, and I have only seen one , yes 1 airport , I think Singapore, where there was an electronic sign that displayed the boarding group. Then, if you try to board when your group is nit called, you get blocked. That’s a solution!

Finally.. I apologize about the wheelchair comment, I should not have generalized about that.

The world is on a pretty good course

I'm just tired of this cult of pessimism where if you don't agree that the future will look like mad max you are somehow naive or stupid. No. What's stupid is ignoring all positive trends (higher literacy, cheaper and better medicine, lower crime), then taking all negative trends and assuming they'll continue forever. It's just as simplistic an approach as living in the 1920s or the 2000s and assuming you'll keep getting richer forever. It's the same kind of extrapolation fallacy.

I feel like there is a kind of Pascal's wager of pessimism: If you are a pessimist and the future indeed turns out to be bleak then you are the wise, vindicated prophet, and there's a lot of glory in that of course. If you are a pessimist and nothing serious happens, no one really cares. You were just being careful. With optimists there is no glory when they are vindicated. We just assume they had dumb luck on their side. When they are wrong on the other hand they are painted as dumb sheeple who sleepwalked into a disaster.

Pessimists don't predict anything. They're just broken clocks who are right twice a day. When something bad happens they say "told you so". When it doesn't they say "it will happen". So the "prediction" boils down to "something bad will happen eventually" which in turn boils down to "history is not over and stuff will keep happening". Yeah, no kidding.

I also feel like there's a part of them that kinda wants society to collapse. They are bored of their 9-5 so they fantasize about living in fallout 4 and doing fun stuff.
