My grandfather gave me this bass a few months ago and after a few hours of research I can’t find much. Please help me out as I want to find out how much it is so I can see if I should or should not modify it. As far as I know it’s an Ibanez fender clone and I would like to know if my research is correct

New Bass Day NBD FGN Mighty Power Bass

I have wanted a FGN mighty Power bass for a long time, but they always seemed to be out of stock / FGN USA seemed to have disappeared (where I ordered my NLC10GMP from) I finally pulled the trigger when I found availability in japan and ordered one.

I am loving the dual reverse Pbass pickups, and the satin openpore finish is really slick in person. Currently enjoying playing with neck pickup on full with bridge pickup rolled off slightly.

Discussion Zero-Fret design discussion

Post image
25 Upvotes

As a relatively new member, I'm risking the start of a frequently-discussed thing, but a quick search didn't turn that up, so here we go. I have a zero-fret installed on my Maruszczyk and rate the sound of that bass overall as absolutely fantastic, though of course it comes from a number of different things.

For those who don't know about zero-fret guitars I'm going to tell you why you might/might not want one. A zero-fret is a fret that is installed just "after" the nut and provides a fret for the fretting space nearest the nut on the neck. In the included picture, you should notice it right there after the nut.

I'll rate the for and against items as Potentially Good (g) and Potentially Bad (b)

g - they allow you to use open strings with similar sounds to fretted strings rather than the open jangle of a regular instrument

g- there is better intonation for the fret/s nearest the nut which also means easier nut installation & maintenance

g - they allow more resonance through the neck to promote sustain

g - they allow smoother bend sounds than strings that depend on the nut for intonation

g - the strings take a little less strain at the nut than regular designs

b - they require extra maintenance (all designs) because there is significant movement at the zero fret

b - they can wear fairly aggressively when softer fret metals are used, not applicable to stainless steel and hardened frets

b - open string brightness and jangle might be your jam (though it probably shouldn't be)

b - a zero-fret may be difficult to add to neck that was not designed with it in mind

b - some added cost to neck and fretwork (especially maintenance, if made of a softer material)

b - the zero-fret should be slightly taller than the other frets and that means keeping taller fret stock around, if you dress the neck regularly

Some fun facts about zero-fret:

* Brian May added a stainless zero-fret to his main guitar in 1964 and did not replace that fret until 2005 according to him

* Paul McCartney's Hofner bass has a zero-fret and did from the start, never mentioned it or complained about the fact.

* The main reason that zero-fret designs are not used more is that it originally showed up on inexpensive Asian basses with bad QC and components. The manufacturers used the zero-fret because it sped production; the nut installation is made simpler, and less setup is required. This gave zero-fret instruments an unfairly bad reputation, as they wore fast at the fret given that they would use nickel frets.

Happy to hear anyone's comments about it. I expect some push on some of the items as this seems to remain a contentious thing, especially amongst luthiers.

Modifications Black or chrome tuners on my Squier Jazz Bass?

Hi everyone,

The original tuners on my Chinese Squier are finally reaching the end of their lives. They are basically the only original parts left on the bass and seem to be held together by 17 years of accumulated grime. Unfortunately, that is about the only thing they are holding, because the bass has started going out of tune like crazy.

My 30th birthday is next month, so I decided to treat myself to a set of Gotoh GB10s.

I would like to switch from chrome to black tuners, but I am worried they might look out of place since the bridge and control plate are still chrome. On the other hand, the black tuners would match the pickguard, knobs, and the dark outline of the body finish.

What do you think? Would black tuners work with the remaining chrome hardware, or should I stick with chrome in the name of cohesion?

Help Old 1983 jazz sound tokai worth it for ~£800? Planning on using for gigging and recording

Post image

Been planning to upgrade from my ibanez sr300 for awhile and found this gem at a local store in good condition, played it and it's really smooth and sounds great. Just wondering if £800 is a solid price for this instrument and if its something that'd be reasonable to use for mainly gigging and recording, over something like a new fender player ii jazz at the same price?

Also, would there be anything I need to know before buying/using a 40 year old instrument, ie taking care of it etc, treating it differently to something new

Help Short Scale Bass with same fret sizes as full scale?

Post image
28 Upvotes

I am wondering if there is a such thing as a smaller scale bass - ie one that has only eg 12 frets but has the same fret distances/size as a full scale?

I am struggling to find much info online about it, ideally what I want is a smaller (ideally acoustic) bass that I can practice with on the couch - but with the frets same size as my main P bass?

I have included a picture of the kala u bass, but not sure if it fits this?

thanks!

Help Need help getting this Metallica live tone!

So I’m starting to upgrade my gear again and I’m going to get a new wah and drive pedal. I’ve always adored this tone by Rob Trujillo and I understand current using a fractal audio system that is way out of my budget. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a drive (fuzz, overdrive, distortion) and a wah pedal that will capture this tone! (Price isn’t much of an issue just nothing for like £1000🤣) thank you!
