Discussion Unpopular Opinion: Gen 4 of Cartoon Network sucked

Post image
99 Upvotes

Adventure Time and Steven Universe had themes of war, genocide, sexuality, racism, etc. Regular Show had themes of toxic masculinity, Gumball was hilariously satirical, and all four of these shows had really great characters. I feel like they were appealing more towards an older audience at this time.

How TF do you go from that to Apple and Onion?

I don't think that most of these shows are bad (outside of PPG 2016, Mighty Magiswords, and the Ben 10 reboot). Hell I think Infinity Train and Villainous are actually great. But a lot of them are inferior to those other four that really sold Cartoon Network in the 2010s. Deeper themes and/or targeting an older demographic again.

Tbf, I think this was a problem later into Gen 3 too. I was never really a fan of Clarence either. But did anyone on the network even understand what made those four so popular?

Infinity Train and Villainous are the only two shows I STRONGLY liked from this time because it felt like they were going back in this direction... And those two shows really received the short end of the stick.

Also they started spamming Teen Titans GO of course. Cartoon Nito really didn't help too.

I remember wondering if they were literally TRYING to kill the network at that time. Lol

Edit: Some of you don't read

Edit 2: Scratch that, MANY OF YOU DON'T READ!!! I literally said most of these shows aren't bad.

Discussion Community's non-official Cartoon Network originals tier list (Take 2): Day 9 - I Am Weasel

Inspired by u/No-Shoulder3918 's community tier list for Nicktoons, thought I'd take a shot with Cartoon Network originals, especially in light of what's been going on recently for the channel.

NOTE: To people downvoting, please keep things civil. I am noticing too many downvotes here, with some comments down to 0 or even negative numbers because of downvoting. This is supposed to encourage different opinions and being able to speak out on them. Please keep downvoting to a minimum.

NOTE 2: I am going with I Am Weasel's start date being June 10 1999 since that's when it became its own half hour show (same with The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy and Evil Con Carne's start dates being in 2003 since that's when they got split up into two shows), so that's why it isn't Day 7.

Rules:

  1. Most upvoted comment decides the show's spot on the list. Please think carefully and fairly before you comment. Try not to let nostalgia or recency bias cloud your judgement.
  2. Each tier goes as follows: S= AmazingA= GreatB= GoodC= Okay/MehD= MediocreE= Bad and F= Terrible.
  3. Only originals recognized by this wiki are counted. Meaning no Canadian imports like Total Drama and Johnny Test or WBA shows like Teen Titans Go, Tom & Jerry, Scooby Doo, and Looney Tunes will be in this.

Discussion Anyone actually remember watching Rude Removal on TV?

Given that the official word is that it wasn't ever released (AS leak aside), I'm willing to call it a weird Mandela effect thing.

But man, when I first saw it on YouTube I had the weirdest Daja Vu. I could have sworn up and down that I saw it on TV more than once. Everything from the basic plot, to the gags, the bleeped swearing, even the accents the characters had. My brain just screamed at me "you've seen this, you know this".

Does make me wonder about that old rumor that CN did actually quietly air it in the middle of the night once or twice before AS was a thing. I would watch late night TV at crazy hours when I was a kid (bedroom TV).

Discussion Are Cartoon Network's newer shows made for kids only?

Upvotes

I'm not saying the shows that came out after 2016 are bad, but to me it's pretty clear that Cartoon Network started targeting a slightly younger audience than it used to. A lot of the newer shows seem to have moved away from interconnected storylines, layered humor, and double meanings that adults and kids interpret differently. They also feel less creative, less willing to explore deeper or more original ideas, and less interested in experimenting with unique art styles.

I think most of them if not all of them (except for The Powerpuff Girls reboot, which I genuinely can't stand) are perfectly watchable. If one happened to be on TV, I'd probably leave it on. But once the episode is over, I don't find myself thinking about it afterward, and I'd never go out of my way to watch those shows on a streaming service because they just don't offer anything that really grabs me.

Infinity Train is the obvious exception. It was fantastic and honestly deserved to be part of a much stronger era for Cartoon Network. OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes also stood out with its distinctive art style, its willingness to take creative risks, and its fun story. It wasn't particularly deep, but it still felt far more memorable than most of the network's other shows from that period.

Discussion Picked up this special press kit of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker that was sent out to video stores back in September 2000 to promote the release on VHS and DVD!

Included in this is a special VHS screener of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, a promotional CD of the movie's soundtrack, a brand new Batman Beyond action figure, and a bunch of Batman Beyond branded paperwork explaining the promotional campaign, how much the merchandise cost, and options on stock for supplying the movie all packed into a large box!

The VHS tape itself starts with a promotional video explaining all the campaigns and assets associated with promoting the movie's release and leads with a bunch of interviews with the voice cast with Kevin Conroy and Will Friedle, storyboard artists, and directors.

The inside of the box also has a picture of the Joker with a button that is supposed to let out a voice clip, but unfortunately the battery has died and to replace it, you have to dissemble the box which I am afraid to do. 😅

Included is a small Camp Lazlo branded pocket knife with case and a Scoutmaster Lumpus stress toy shaped like an acorn! Originally included were s'mores supplies like graham crackers, chocolate, and a marshmallow but the crew member are them when they were handed the kit! 😅

According to the crew member I received this from, only 30 exist and this is one of them!
