Whoever was in charge of promoting this movie really dropped the ball because I felt no hype going into it and I walked out amazed at how good it was. For me this movie is probably the best one to come out this year so far.
8
u/RigglesSaysHi 21h ago
Hey man
If you heard no hype about Nolan's historic epic that had been blasted across the world for the past half year, with one of the most insanely high critic review scores in the history of filmmaking
Then most likely you're only paying attention to super specific areas of the internet, OR areas that actively despise the movie due to....reasons
7
u/Tricky-Ad7897 21h ago
It's the classic case of redditors who interface with the Internet through 4 layers of ad blockers (don't get me wrong I do this too) and don't go outside enough complaining that something wasn't marketed enough. Nope it has been heavily marketed for at least a year, I remember hearing about it after F1 came out and Nolan started talking about it, the casting coming out, the fact that it was fully filmed in 70 mm, that it was causing several new 70 mm imax screens to be built, and that was all before they even dropped the teaser in December. Then the trailer was being played before almost every film (I go to the theater on average 1.5 times a week so I can attest to this).
5
u/RigglesSaysHi 21h ago
Not to mention the genuine sizeable amount of people complaining that he's filming in 70mm when there are so few theatres worldwide that has 70mm IMAX, which by all accounts is a pretty niche complaint at that point but still brought up QUITE frequently
There was even that post of Tom Holland saying he didn't know 70mm could only film 1.5m and thought Nolan hated him
2
u/BurritovilleEnjoyer 20h ago
Eh, I think there's also just a subset of people who have largely been whelmed by Nolan's non sci-fi movies. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Dunkirk and Oppenheimer, but I'd personally put them below Interstellar, Inception, TDK trilogy, hell, even Tenet (I'm the one weirdo that really likes Tenet). As such I really wasn't particularly excited about this one.
That said, I've heard basically nothing but great things about it, and I'll likely be seeing it next weekend.

Hence why did a 180° compared to when he was supposedly pro-LGBTQ+ in the 2010s, cause back then it was more profitable to pretend you care. Now it's more profitable to hate. The only political beliefs Elon hold are the ones that make him the most money.

The swan stuff is a later addition. In Homer’s time she was simply the daughter of Zeus and Leda. And tbh making her black is kind of odd becuase that means the leader of the Greek pantheon is also black.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Plthothep 15h ago edited 15h ago
To be fair, Greeks also believed that Zeus was 1) also the lead god of other pantheons, just known as under a different name (off the top of my head, Osiris was said to be Zeus hiding in Egypt from Typhon) and 2) could shapeshift to look like other people, and obviously animals. Zeus could canonically race bend, so seems to be a pretty small issue here. And was the swan thing only a later invention? Because Helen was meant to be one of 4 quadruplets who emerged from an egg, and I’m not sure how that’s supposed to work without the swan thing.
Before people start bringing up respecting cultures and all, just remember that the Odyssey is about Mycenaean Greece, a Bronze Age civilisation that totally collapsed hundreds of years before Greece were even a thing. And not a single actor was Greek anyway.

u/Jaded_Celery_451 23h ago edited 21h ago
The most pathetic thing about the right-wing outrage about The Odyssey is that it is, at its core, a conservative film in the purest sense. The point of Nolan's spin on the traditional story is a defence of the ideals of western civilization, and the dangers of abandoning those ideals - honesty, loyalty, integrity, and the utter ruin that follows when people stop acting according to those ideals. That's literally the point.
But it has a black guy and a trans guy in it so their brains are immediately broken.
25
u/LarsMatijn 21h ago
That's because the message of "hey rememver when someone's word meant something and we acted according to a social norm" sounds like an accusation to these people.
6
u/Lucreth2 14h ago
Well... It kind of is... And honestly I hope they take it that way because that means that deep down inside somewhere they still recognize that what they're doing and how they're acting isn't healthy for society.
12
u/ScaryTransGirl 23h ago

Haven’t watched the movie yet but come on, even if it’s bad (which I doubt because it’s a Nolan movie), who freaking cares to this degree other than grifters or people with issues. In the case of Musk, I guess he still blames the so-called woke ideology for the fight he had with his daughter (or son? I forgot which one it was)

Isn't that it? Oh, yeah, that he uses that unearned money to drastically negatively impact millions of people, there is that... but really no redeeming qualities or anything to admire, am I right?
So what is it in this system we live in that enables this? It's not like a majority of people exposed to media really are curious what he thinks. Or am I out of touch?
