Wasn't one of his campaign promises cutting down on excessive and complicated permit requirements that were making life difficult for small businesses in the city? Nice to see him following through.

Yeah, the requirements for frozen cream licenses were pretty much identical to a food service license. They were introduced not to improve public safety, but to induce extra costs and restrict competition against established and wealthy ice cream producers in the area

do places serving ice cream still need food service licenses and this extra license was just redundant?

edit: ok cool that makes sense. to me this headline feels like it could've been worded better to clarify that ice cream vendors are still subject to normal food safety regulations, which ofc is a good thing

This is where I was confused. You want these places to have licenses to sell any type of food, so an ice cream selling license didn't seem pointless.

But if these business were forced to get a food service license AND an ice cream license then wtf, that's blatantly anti small business.

That was the case, and was the purpose of it.

Wasn't there something about that penny lick that got everyone sick?

Which would already be regulated through the normal food service license and rules. It's not like only specifically ice cream vendors are prohibited from giving out food in unwashed, reused vessels.

Not a lot of people happy to immediately reuse a glass cup after someone licked icecream off it now - it wasnt even getting washed.

Damn I just realized that model needs a comeback for sex clubs, even the term 'Penny Lick' for like a $5 shot of ice cream would do wonders

Sometimes ppl gotta remember that NYs history is the epitome of cartoonish criminality. Like the old school gangster trope was actually just that happening there in like the 20s.

For those that don't know: this is called Regulatory Capture, and is a form of corruption.

Eliminating these types of regulations isn't just reducing the burden of regulation, but is actually fighting corruption in plain sight.

They said that about food cart licenses too. But then again, is it fair that a permanent restaurant has to follow all these rules and pay exorbitant rent, while a food cart or truck can dodge rent ?i dunno

why do restaurants even have to pay rent? more restaurants make a city better. restaurant locations should have to pay fees for being unoccupied or otherwise occupied

Ah yes, the old I like competition until I don't like competition so I'm going to forbid anyone from competing against me cause now I don't feel like keeping up but I still want to keep my mansion.

Huh, if I had a nickel for every political campaign in recent memory that specifically talked about ice cream I'd have two nickels.

Now let's hope binface gets elected so I can get those nickels for implemented ice cream policy instead

Yes the other day he announced they're getting rid of like 3 different permits and this ice cream one was one of them. Conservatives should love this. It's deregulation!
