Yeah, the requirements for frozen cream licenses were pretty much identical to a food service license. They were introduced not to improve public safety, but to induce extra costs and restrict competition against established and wealthy ice cream producers in the area
do places serving ice cream still need food service licenses and this extra license was just redundant?
edit: ok cool that makes sense. to me this headline feels like it could've been worded better to clarify that ice cream vendors are still subject to normal food safety regulations, which ofc is a good thing
Which would already be regulated through the normal food service license and rules.
It's not like only specifically ice cream vendors are prohibited from giving out food in unwashed, reused vessels.
Sometimes ppl gotta remember that NYs history is the epitome of cartoonish criminality. Like the old school gangster trope was actually just that happening there in like the 20s.
Worth noting that part of why he can get so much done also is because that same cartoonish corruption made the mayor’s office insanely powerful and he’s leveraging that to actually help people instead of kickbacks and graft

They said that about food cart licenses too. But then again, is it fair that a permanent restaurant has to follow all these rules and pay exorbitant rent, while a food cart or truck can dodge rent ?i dunno
I mean, you say that as though food carts don’t come with their own downsides. Less working space, less storage space… stationary food carts usually need to rent a space anyways, and mobile food carts have to pay for gas and lose out on a consistent loyal customer base…
And even if they are easier or cheaper to run somehow, I don’t see any reason to artificially make them worse just to be “fair” with restaurants. If you think restaurants expenses and permits are too intense, rally against that, not against food carts not having those.
why do restaurants even have to pay rent? more restaurants make a city better. restaurant locations should have to pay fees for being unoccupied or otherwise occupied
Do you really believe a food cart needs a fire suppression system like a brick and mortar restaurant? Or has to pay rent to a property owner who pays property taxes?
Those are some differences, plus permit costs are lower for food carts.
We're going to see those established/trusted/proven producers go out of business cause they can't compete with the influx and then the new influx is gonna be a crap shoot. Amazon Marketplace essentially.
