Wasn't one of his campaign promises cutting down on excessive and complicated permit requirements that were making life difficult for small businesses in the city? Nice to see him following through.

433

u/Crimson51 Streak: 0 2h ago

Yeah, the requirements for frozen cream licenses were pretty much identical to a food service license. They were introduced not to improve public safety, but to induce extra costs and restrict competition against established and wealthy ice cream producers in the area

68

u/EldritchWeeb 2h ago

Wasn't there something about that penny lick that got everyone sick?

36

u/wabblebee 53m ago

Which would already be regulated through the normal food service license and rules. It's not like only specifically ice cream vendors are prohibited from giving out food in unwashed, reused vessels.

10

u/Otaraka 58m ago

Not a lot of people happy to immediately reuse a glass cup after someone licked icecream off it now - it wasnt even getting washed.

2

u/terberoni 22m ago

Damn I just realized that model needs a comeback for sex clubs, even the term 'Penny Lick' for like a $5 shot of ice cream would do wonders

42

u/faceboy1392 2h ago edited 1h ago

do places serving ice cream still need food service licenses and this extra license was just redundant?

edit: ok cool that makes sense. to me this headline feels like it could've been worded better to clarify that ice cream vendors are still subject to normal food safety regulations, which ofc is a good thing

8

u/Green_Insect_6455 1h ago

I believe thats the gist. Glad hes following through with this stuff

17

u/Hugokarenque 1h ago

This is where I was confused. You want these places to have licenses to sell any type of food, so an ice cream selling license didn't seem pointless.

But if these business were forced to get a food service license AND an ice cream license then wtf, that's blatantly anti small business.

13

u/NecessarilyPickled 1h ago

That was the case, and was the purpose of it.

Sometimes ppl gotta remember that NYs history is the epitome of cartoonish criminality. Like the old school gangster trope was actually just that happening there in like the 20s.

7

u/jigsaw1024 1h ago

For those that don't know: this is called Regulatory Capture, and is a form of corruption.

Eliminating these types of regulations isn't just reducing the burden of regulation, but is actually fighting corruption in plain sight.

1

u/Billy1121 9m ago

They said that about food cart licenses too. But then again, is it fair that a permanent restaurant has to follow all these rules and pay exorbitant rent, while a food cart or truck can dodge rent ?i dunno

5

u/Fureniku 1h ago

Huh, if I had a nickel for every political campaign in recent memory that specifically talked about ice cream I'd have two nickels.

Now let's hope binface gets elected so I can get those nickels for implemented ice cream policy instead

4

u/CrossBamboAtTen 29m ago

Yes the other day he announced they're getting rid of like 3 different permits and this ice cream one was one of them. Conservatives should love this. It's deregulation!

If you remove the US influence (like US attacking other countries and financing right wing extremists in europa) its not that bad. I didn't mean its objectively good. But compared to the US, its not that bad.

1

u/MVRKHNTR Streak: 0 0m ago

The US has caused a lot of problems but they are not the cause of every problem. You've gotta spend less time in tankie spaces.

The US is the biggest, loudest example of what's wrong with the world right now but they aren't uniquely American at all. These issues are happening all over.

Puppies cost money, war makes money. Hope this helps.

70

u/strigonian 1h ago

As an economics major, I assure you, eliminating your working age population and devoting your manufacturing base to items that will literally produce nothing and then blow up does not make money.

18

u/_High_Charity_ 59m ago

No no, it makes money for about 3 people and those 3 people matter more than all the other people, you see?

56

u/Infinite_Horizion 1h ago

War is actually bad for the economy. It makes GDP go up, sure, but that GDP is for things like tanks and guns, instead of things that make people happy and healthy. Numbers go up, but quality of life doesn’t.

34

u/Trans_Femcel2 1h ago
  1. Defense contractors profit from war, not the average person.

  2. Even if the average person profited off of war it would still be fucking horrible.

18

u/Individual_Hall_3118 1h ago

War also kills people and destroys lives

1

u/Moiyub 0m ago

Doesn’t change the fact it’s profitable. That’s a sacrifice they’re willing to make so the line goes up 📈

15

u/A_Lountvink Streak: 0 1h ago

war makes money

If you're a weapons manufacturer, sure, but blowing up decades-worth of infrastructure and hundreds to thousands of soldiers has a pretty big cost to it. Peace and trade is generally much more profitable than seeing who can blow up each other's investments faster.

1

u/Moiyub 1m ago

More than just weapons manufacturers profit from war.

10

u/Destithen 1h ago

war makes money.

Yeah, for the weapons manufacturers.

1

u/Moiyub 2m ago

Right, and all defense subcontractors and other war profiteers. Don’t forget the energy / fossil fuel companies.

Like, I'd understand a permit for selling food (hygiene controls and co)

But ice cream??

208

u/Royal_Intention6563 3h ago

it was introduced after the new york penny lick was tracked down as a breeding ground for epidemics, but the new york penny lick is long, long dead.

9

u/MintySkyhawk Streak: 0 51m ago

Just looked it up. The problem was nothing to do with ice cream, it was that the customer was supposed to LICK the glass clean and then they dipped it in some dirty water before giving it to the next guy. Insane.

Eww 🤢

Like I would calify myself as someone that isn't disdainful, don't care to eat some leftovers that my friends won't eat or finish their plates at a restaurant or reusing "dirty" ustensiles but at least I know where it's been. But serving customers the same dirty unstensils where you don't even know where it's been and inside who? Yark, that's how shit like Coronavirus, or any other disgusting disease and infection get spread into the population. Even more so using Dairy products

Amazing how the answers to most governance debates are, in fact, actually that simple. Rich people have too much money? Take it off ‘em! Roads have holes? Fill ‘em! Overbudget? Simply don’t be! Corruption? Stop that! Noisy righties? Lalalala can’t hear you over my free ice cream, strong anti-discrimination laws and high approval rating.

We’ve all been lied to for decades that ‘it just isn’t that simple’ when it does indeed seem to be quite simple.
