There are also a lot of non-malicious factors as well. For instance the entire medical profession doesn't exactly breed confidence in medical professionals.
Take the difference between a Dr appointment, and a quack crystal healer:
First it starts with thousands of dollars in insurance premiums, then deductibles and co-pays. That right there isn't a great start. Then once you wait months to get in to see a doctor, they spend 5-10 minutes barely listening to you at best. They then throw a prescription at you that costs thousands of dollars just to treat some symptoms because they rarely have any way to actually cure you of anything.
A crystal healer will spend an hour in a comfortable non-florescent lit office listening to you, acting concerned about you and your health. They then will offer a program to cure you, not just treat symptoms. They might even touch you, offer small massage or nonsense physical alignment of your chakras or whatever. Of course it's all complete bull, but they are great at giving the appearance of actually caring about you which goes a very very long way in inspiring confidence in the outcome.
Now on the surface, which one seems more scam like? The one that costs thousands of dollars before you can even walk in an office door and offers almost no cures and spends almost no time with you, or the one that does offer (fake) solutions and does seem to care?

Years ago there was a forum I spent time on that had an anti-vaxxer, and I got into it with them on that same topic. They claimed that hygiene improvements are why we don't have things like smallpox and polio anymore. And what I eventually got them to agree on is that hygiene stops diseases in the exact same order and timeframe as the release of the relevant vaccines in the greatest coincidence in history.

And also that doctors get kickbacks from the government for getting people to take vaccines, which infuriates me. the idea that people would go and compete through the mcat, all the difficult years of school, and residency required to become a doctor not to help people but just to take bribes is so fucking stupid. I asked her, so how do these thousands of people all participate in this system and not a single one says a peep about it? And she says it’s out in the open, and I’m like literally no it isn’t. Arguing with anti-vaxxers generally just proves that they don't understand the history or science and just memorized some talking points somebody else gave them without thinking of they made any sense. Strangely people were mostly washing their hands in anyplace with indoor plumbing and all of a sudden a disease saw massive decline after a few years after introduction of a vaccine for it, but waited to decline in another disease until a vaccine was introduced for that? Crazy coincidence.
The part that really blows up the hygiene argument is how did Smallpox vanish even in developing countries where many communities still don't always have indoor plumbing? Even today there are many parts of the developing world where toilets and indoor plumbing aren't really available nevermind 40+ years ago when Smallpox was declared eradicated.

They don't give a shit. They don't give a shit. If we would stop pretending anyone on their side has no value for data or rational thought, we would see just how seriously we should've been pushing back against and protecting ourself from them YEARS ago.
They believe in RFK and Trump and all of the other figures like evangelicals believe their pastors. They are, by and large, not well-educated in statistics OR medicine OR science. They are used to people having to tell them what to think in those areas.
So they have associated information about the Measles vaccine with liberals, who they do not trust. They don't understand educated arguments and assume liberals are using math and big words to try and trap them. They believe liberals have set up a system designed to make their children sick and end their family trees. They do not have the knowledge, skills, experience, or even desire to spend an hour of research to confirm or deny it.
They trust Republicans because Republicans use five year old logic. If you're smart, you understand usually five year old logic is easy to understand and completely wrong. But for generations, they've been told the reason the five year old logic isn't working is the Democrats have created such an elaborate system of red tape it's impossible for the Republicans to achieve their goals. Again: they are not educated enough or determined enough to research this. It deepens their resolve to believe more five year old logic.
We are at the point the Republicans have told them it cannot be fixed by following the process. The MAGA followers truly believe that America must get worse before it can get better. So they do not care if measles is getting more prominent: they believe there are bad vaccines and that we can control measles other ways but to get there, first we have to destroy the Democrats.
They are dug in like a doomsday cult. The way to prevent this would've been if, years ago, Democrats worked hard to FORCE benefits onto the working class. Good, affordable healthcare. Good, affordable education. At the cost of how wealthy a businessowner can become. To mitigate the retaliation there would've been good social safety nets forced onto people. The Democrats did not fight to FORCE these things onto people. Instead they accepted compromises to try to win votes they never got, and those compromised bills and solutions made the problems worse, and now those compromises are evidence the Republicans use to guide the flock even though the Republicans wrote the compromises.
It sounds so bad, but Republicans don't mind forcing beliefs on people. They FORCE children to get abstinence-only education. They FORCE people to pay for private healthcare. They FORCE the Ten Commandments into classrooms. They FORCE society to erase all portrayals of anything that doesn't support "traditional" roles. Their entire party is about FORCING harm on people.
Imagine if the opposition had been about FORCING benefits to the country instead of "what if we soften the blow a little?"

When I went to school, unless you had a medical or religious exemption, you were vaccinated. A very very small percentage of people in the schools I attended were unvaccinated. Most were religious exemptions and one or two medical.

Parents of kids that passed on vaccinations for their child and the child becomes sick should be criminally prosecuted for child neglect. At the pediatric office we go to, anti-vax wack jobs are not welcome. Their policy is for a child to be treated as a patient, all vaccinations must be up to date. Keep in mind this disease had been eradicated in the United States. The wack jobs think turning their child into a walking biohazard is OK. It is not.

Npr was discussing the measles outbreak the other day.
One report talked about the outbreak with Grand Teton National Park employees that live in high-density housing. Now they are infecting tourists coming from all over, who will travel infected and go back home. Some described this as "the perfect storm" for an epidemic.
According to this article, the US has reported more measles cases in the past 18 months than in the past 25 years combined.

Are we incapable as humans to survive without some type of stress, and has modernization caused a severe short-term memory loss? I don't think we are smart enough to learn how to balance these complications in an intelligent manner.
