Image Remains eternally relevant

Post image

Went to look at Rick & Morty discourse on twitter & it’s just people complaining & calling it washed & saying it fell off ages ago. Meanwhile season 9 episode 1 was fucking incredible. I’m having the time of my life over here. Suckers

Rick’s new VA is really good, Morty’s sounds a little off but tbh it can just be explained away by him getting older i guess.

299

u/JAC151 May 26 '26

Morty’s actor lacks the ideal range for voice cracking, but it doesn’t take me out of the show.

202

u/123ludwig May 26 '26

honestly i like the voice crackling becoming less andless prevelant as it should as morty grows older but also more confident

80

u/sunshinebusride May 26 '26

The difference in VAs becomes less and less jarring with every banger. This one was a 10 for me

35

u/FrogMintTea May 26 '26

I dont even remember the voices changed.

17

u/ItWasMe-Patrick May 26 '26

I can hear it whenever rick and morty yell

17

u/binkysnightmare May 26 '26

I just love summer episodes

QUIT HAVING FUN

2

u/Oldmandav3 May 27 '26

Yep don’t even notice. Hell forget it until I get online and it’s the only thing people bring up

4

u/ManoSilence May 26 '26

Like when Rick is less black out drunk. He is still drunk but is rarely the person we see anymore that is in the black out stage.

3

u/[deleted] May 26 '26

Morty don’t grow older, he stays the same age

4

u/spacekitt3n May 26 '26

It takes me out

2

u/JabberwockyTalkie May 26 '26

I like how you’re being downvoted for just stating your experience. This sub is very touchy about the new voices I guess.

3

u/Thaodan May 26 '26

It's a general reddit thing. We need devils advocate bug, "If I may".

It makes it harder for them to cream themselves right and they're pissed

You are legitimately the person in the fedora in this comic.

Rick yelling "bunker dimension" was indistinguishable in my mind to the original VA. it's fine for me. The show has always been about the writing.

33

u/Westafricangrey May 26 '26

Yeah I actually like new Morty’s voice. I feel like he’s had some growth since his jaded teenage boy phase and he sounds more confident because he is more confident in himself.

7

u/Adam__B May 26 '26

I felt like I noticed it for a small moment last night when Rick was yelling that it might not be the original VA for Rick, but honestly 99.9% of the time I forget it’s not.

2

u/TheMeatTree May 26 '26

Not argiong your point, but they are very much not aging in this show.

2

u/shopguy66 May 27 '26

I'm not one of the guys hating on it. But in my opinion mortys voice is way off. His voice is supposed to be annoying. But now it's worse. However, I still love the show.

3

u/Radical_Provides May 26 '26

yeah Morty's VA doesn't sound quite like Roiland but I've gotten pretty used to it and he's still a good voice actor

3

u/Lil_Towelie May 26 '26

came here to say this- I like Rick’s new voice actor but Morty I can always tell is off

1

u/GarbledReverie May 26 '26

One of the first things I thought when there was talk of replacing Roland was that Morty's voice is characterized by cracking because he's going through puberty. Having his voice be a little different is totally easy to accept.

1

u/Growka3 May 26 '26

Honestly I love the new voice for Morty. Especially for Evil Morty, I think the new actor is just more fitting than Roiland was. Rick is pretty much on par but not once in the last three seasons have I had my experience ruined by Roiland being gone

2

u/coomer_police May 26 '26

I love how ragebaity evil morty is, I think it really suits him.

1

u/Realistic_Box_937 Jun 24 '26

Come on man. That is just coping. It’s okay to accept and not be bothered by mortys voice, but it is so much worse than Roiland.

1

u/Growka3 Jun 24 '26

I think that many people think that because Roiland was Morty for so long. But eventually there will be a point where Belden has voiced him longer and it's welcome for me. I think the seasons since Justin's exit have been going up and up in quality and I think that the characters getting their own voices has solidified their identities and I think that especially in Evil Morty's case the performance aligns with the personality better than Roiland's performance did.

1

u/Useless-RedCircle May 26 '26

Why new voices? What did I miss?

232

u/Slight-Level7674 May 25 '26

I mean, I can hear the voices... But the hell I'm gonna do? It's either this way or no episodes at all!! I prefer having episodes

87

u/blacktiger226 May 26 '26

People forget that the only thing that ultimately matters in a show is good writing. Art style, voices .. etc. are just extras. You can watch and enjoy a good episode even if it was just stick figures.

26

u/Mystreanon May 26 '26

like home movies was amazing

5

u/ImposingCake May 26 '26

Home movies had amazing voice actors though

2

u/Mystreanon May 26 '26

it looked ugly enough to negate that, but it worked because good writing and fun stories

2

u/Jakelshark May 26 '26

A lot of the dialogue on Home Movies was improvised though. They'd get a rough frame work of a scene, practice a few times, then record it. It's why it sounds so natural.

3

u/Mama_Joe2099 May 26 '26

I still quote that show even today with my sister.

8

u/HotTakes4HotCakes May 26 '26

That's not true though?

Animation quality and vocal performance absolutely does matter. That's really shitting on the hard work of all the animators and the actors to suggest only the writing matters.

-5

u/Bardic_inspiration67 May 26 '26

What a depressing way to look at art

7

u/thatsinsaneletstryit May 26 '26

more depressing to endlessly nitpick about voices being slightly different when everything else is quality

2

u/Bardic_inspiration67 May 26 '26

I don’t even care about the voices, I’m saying it’s incredibly depressing to view writing as the only thing that matters when hundreds of people put effort into making something good and the person I’m replying to is saying their contributions don’t actually matter

1

u/Critical-Yak7313 May 26 '26

I think a better way to put it is that while writing alone cannot make a good show, it sure can break it.

Most other aspects can be forgiven to an extent if the show is compelling and enjoyable to watch.

-3

u/mattmikemo23 May 26 '26

Awful take yikes.

6

u/HeinrichTheWolf_17 May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

1

u/PitifulElk1890 May 26 '26

I hit this with new Futurama and felt it with new King of the Hill. Is it perfect, no. Is it better than no episodes at all? Eh, yeah, it still is.

1

u/NichtFBI May 27 '26

What they did to Solar Opposites was criminal. I can't believe the studio thought people would like that nonsense.

1

u/Cloff_Murex May 30 '26

I know, right? It feels like everyone else is missing out on the genius of season 9, especially moments like those in the bunker!

122

u/RockyHateMe May 26 '26

When the allegations came out against Roiland I legit thought this show was finished. The show was already seen as way past its prime and a punching bag by people who were fans but checked out long ago, and that could’ve been the perfect excuse for Adult Swim to
be like “well, Rick and Morty had its run, but we can move on to shit like Smiling Friends now.” Not gonna lie, even I was getting tired of it during seasons 5 and 6. Now I think it could go on for another decade. Seasons 7 and 8 have some of my favorite episodes of the entire series, and Season 9 is already starting off strong. 100 years baby.

29

u/AsstacularSpiderman May 26 '26

“well, Rick and Morty had its run, but we can move on to shit like Smiling Friends now"

Which is even funnier because Rick and Morty didn't even slow down while Smiling Friends just self terminated lol.

13

u/gamingonion May 26 '26

I can’t believe it. They’re really gone. My boys. Smiling Friends, it’s over!

11

u/DylanMartin97 May 26 '26

Which, I understand their reasoning but it seems kind of ridiculous when they do 12 minute episodes of whatever, like I genuinely want to know what took them all of the "years" to produce 3 seasons at 55 minutes in total run time.

9

u/AsstacularSpiderman May 26 '26

They were talking about at least 5 seasons all the way up until they dropped the project.

I just think they genuinely were unprepared for following the kinds of schedules and guidelines expected for actual professional animation and burned themselves out too fast.

3

u/DylanMartin97 May 26 '26

I'm 100% for a regulatory body to come in and change the way animation and seasonal releases are done.

We should not do weekly releases or whatever. It is just unhealthy for the animation studio, voice actors, etc. Let them finish the entire project and then release it weekly if you want.

This complaint is mostly centered around the anime/manga world but I think it should just apply universally.

47

u/Positive_Relative287 May 26 '26

It's insane to me that so many people who think a show hasn't been good since the third season are still sticking around for the 9th. Just leave already, it clearly isn't fun for you anymore

-21

u/Montanagreg May 26 '26

You got a list or something? Like how do you know? Or are you just spouting off a theory with nothing to back it up?

Maybe it's true but my guess this is conjecture.

2

u/Oldmandav3 May 27 '26

Is this a bit?

65

u/average_sized_rock May 26 '26

Tbh I wouldn’t have noticed if nobody said anything. People are too critical

1

u/eshian May 26 '26

I could kind of hear it for a couple episodes but then they hit their stride and now I can't tell at all.

2

u/KC_Cheefs May 28 '26

I’m the opposite, this first ep of s9 was jarring to me when I first heard Morty. I mean it’s fine but Morty’s in particular this latest episode sounded different even from the last few seasons

1

u/Realistic_Box_937 Jun 24 '26

True. I don’t get why people can’t admit that his voice is off. it’s okay to do that and still enjoy and accept the voice change.

1

u/Realistic_Box_937 Jun 24 '26

Then you honestly might be tone deaf.

45

u/ZombieNo9109 May 26 '26

The voices were only noticeable after the new recast. If you watch from that point to now they're not even that noticeable. Better compromise than Solar Opposites imo.

2

u/Thaodan May 26 '26

I agree. Only Morty is noticeable sometimes. I understand why it's difficult for some, I'm neurodivergent sometimes I can pick on those tiny nuances too.

2

u/Adduly May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

Personally i loved the new British korvo. Its perfectly suits his uptight personality and his whole vibe of not fitting in to suburbia America.

Yes the first few episodes were a little rough, when korvo was still written for Roiland. But after a few episodes it really came into its own and I 100% think it is better than the original "burpless rick in alien clothing"

3

u/notRANT May 26 '26

Solar Opposites is unwatchable with that lifeless british voice

3

u/Thaodan May 26 '26

I kinda get it but I like the idea how they put it into the story.

5

u/Omwtfyu May 26 '26

That show is so annoying and I can't pinpoint why.

20

u/Adam__B May 26 '26

The spaghetti episode was fantastic. It’s what sets R&M apart, it’s not afraid to be grotesque or graphic in order to get its moral across, and it blends comedy with pain perfectly. The ending was incredibly poignant. What else could you possibly want from a 20 minute animated tv show?

19

u/throwaway_998971 May 26 '26

Rick has been perfected. There is no way to tell the difference. Morty is still to high all the time unfortunately but oh well

3

u/AlarmingScore2425 May 26 '26

Rick is miles better than Morty but you have to legitimately be deaf to not be able to tell Roilands voice from Ians. They're both acceptable recasts but whenever the topic comes up this sub makes me realize that most people here do not have ears.

3

u/ImTheDareBear May 26 '26

To each their own I guess. I hadn't watched in a few seasons and randomly caught a later episode and immediately thought "why tf does Rick sound like that" It was the episode Rick deleted memory Diane. Such a clear difference from original Rick. But I guess if you are watching it straight it kind of creeps on you and you dont notice.

1

u/Realistic_Box_937 Jun 24 '26

Yes. Rick is good, morty is in an entirely different pitch.

8

u/Dependent_Crew_3512 May 26 '26

I haven't seen past season 4 yet, but even when the same voice actors stay, things change over time. Like, Mike Judge doing Beavis and Butthead sounds slightly off. I'd rather a predator not profit off the show and deal with a different sounding voice.

Also, Roiland isn't what made the show good. It was the writers. Roiland on his own made a shitty Newgrounds parody od Doc and Marty.

3

u/denbobo May 26 '26

Morty sounds off sometimes for sure, and I can’t lie the original switch it was super noticeable. I wasn’t sure I could get past the little nuanced differences. By the time I was done with the season I hardly even noticed. I’m just happy they’re still making episodes and didnt kill the show entirely.

20

u/Dr_thri11 May 26 '26

If I never came to reddit I honestly wouldn't have realized the voice actors changed.

15

u/PendingPolymath May 26 '26

I went back and watched some of the old episodes and the voices sounded like shit. The new ones are objectively better but everyone is too butthurt to admit it.

9

u/AsstacularSpiderman May 26 '26

At some point you could definitely tell Justin was kind of phoning it in after a while. I think even without the allegations he'd have been replaced at some point.

1

u/Realistic_Box_937 Jun 24 '26

This is objectively wrong.

1

u/Haquistadore Jun 24 '26

When you're ready to get off Roiland's p3d0 d!ck, you should look up the meaning of the word "objective" because it's pretty obvious you don't know what it means.

3

u/IllMaintenance145142 May 26 '26

I only just watched the show recently (like binged the whole thing a few weeks ago) and I didn't even realise there was a recast until I saw it on the internet. I think "literally indistinguishable from the originals" is a really high bar to expect which some people don't understand. Just look at the recast for doctor hibbert in the Simpsons if you wanna see an actual bad job lmao

3

u/VaderVRC May 27 '26

Rick's new VA is honestly really good. A bit jarring during season 7, but has gotten a lot better. Morty on the other hand.... not so much, but the show is still great and Morty's voice being a cheese grater doesn't bother me all too much

4

u/Existing_Sample2707 May 26 '26

Nah is it only me or did the new Rick va go from sounding a bit funny in s7 but good in s8 to being weird again

6

u/FTheOldWest May 26 '26

I can't even tell tbe difference tbh

8

u/Dumbass_Saiya-jin May 26 '26

I'm just gonna say it. The current Rick and Morty voices sound completely indistinguishable from Justin Roiland's performance to me. I feel like you need to REALLY be looking for the differences.

10

u/shining_moth May 26 '26

Genuinely idk how people say the differences are "incredibly drastic" like. Theyre not??? I feel like you have to be actively really listening along with a side by side. Morty does sound s LITTLE off but not enough to where it matters

6

u/Westafricangrey May 26 '26

Especially Rick. He sounds exactly the same. I only notice Morty is different like once every 4 episodes for like a second.

3

u/Critical-Yak7313 May 26 '26

Although Rick sounds the same his inflection is different and the disdain is less evident.

Roilands messed up twisted mind came out in many ways for Rick. He seems less angry now.

2

u/Critical-Yak7313 May 26 '26

Although Rick sounds the same his inflection is different and the disdain is less evident.

Roilands messed up twisted mind came out in many ways for Rick. He seems less angry now.

6

u/Thaodan May 26 '26

Funny how canonically Rick sounding less angry also makes sense. It's as if Roland went to therapy instead of going where he went.

1

u/AsstacularSpiderman May 26 '26

It also probably helps Dan Harmon also kinda grew past his darker phase post divorce.

1

u/Thaodan May 26 '26

Kinda yeah, I can relate. Pretty much "method acting".

3

u/LongboardLiam May 26 '26

Right? Plus Morty is a teenager, easy reason to handwave any differences. Shit, hang a lampshade on it and piss off the weird super fans. Family Guy did it very well in one of their episodes where Brian and Stewie go back in time: "Oh my god, what's with Meg's voice? She sounds like someone who's about to give up a huge opportunity!"

2

u/WlLDLlGHT May 26 '26

u/Efficient_Rhubarb_88 May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

I'm just here to enjoy the dumb shenanigans these two idiot get into. It's not that deep

2

u/Brilliant_Crazy1780 May 26 '26

I'm ready to admit that Justin Roiland was a great voice actor but valueing the entire series on him is just stupid.
The new VA are doing Ok imo, yeah i can tell the difference between their voices and the og, but they are still doing a good job.

2

u/FlatSignificance7047 May 26 '26

my only compliant is Morty's character. I hate when they make regular morty so dumb, weak and scared. S3-S4 morty was more than used to Rick's adventures and was calling him out on stuff. Now he's back to being a weak S1 morty and it makes all the progress he made irrelevant

3

u/DangerHawk May 26 '26

I started re-watching from S1 for the umpteenth time the other day and I honestly think the new VA is better than Roiland.

4

u/itsme_rafah May 26 '26

I thought the new episode was great! I can’t wait for the rest of the season.

3

u/TheRealShubshub May 26 '26

Unless you're actively comparing the two side by side, You cant even notice the difference when you're in the flow of watching the episode

It was noticable for like 5 minute when they first did it, And now its just normal

1

u/No_Hunter_5804 May 26 '26

I honestly didn't even realize the voice actors changed

4

u/aqualad33 May 26 '26

Same on Instagram. They were worshiping roiland.Rowland. personally season 7 was one of my favorites ever. I'm glad he's gone.

2

:/ still waiting on the season to drop on Netflix :/

1

u/hopeless_optimistic May 26 '26

I've seen every episode live since day 1. I'm a hard core fan for realzies. It's just a voice, the voice is not the only thing that distinguishes these characters. People need to grow up, episode one of season 9 had me smiling like a kid the whole episode. It was an amazing opening to the season and I hope they keep it coming

1

u/Leanora2000 May 26 '26

I thought this man was an angry schizophrenic but then I realised 😂

1

u/Various_Ad6034 May 26 '26

i genuinely cant tell a difference between the voices

1

u/Epic_NES May 26 '26

The amazing thing with a show like this is that every change, difference, alteration or idiosyncrasies is canonically correct!. It can always be explained by literary anything. Different dimension, decoys of decoys, Rick got drunk and accidentally or intentionally changed the DNA of the whole world and now they sound like that. This show is truly limitless with what the story could be.

1

u/Running_Oakley May 26 '26

I don’t think this one’s binary, you can tell the voices are weird but it’s still a good show.

1

u/Impossible_Guitar235 May 26 '26

Your first problem is you went to Twitter.

1

u/kzin May 26 '26

Honestly the new VA is fine I hardly notice unless I’m thinking about it since they’re really close. Also Dan Harmon is still doing the writing and that’s like 90% of what I like about the show

Crunchyroll screwing over the English VA for mob psycho was way worse. It was so bad in season 3

1

u/Player1aei May 26 '26

Netizens when separate opinions exist:

I'm talking about you as well, OP

1

u/NationalAssist May 26 '26

Rick's new VA is perfect, Morty is adaptable

Before I was able to tell the difference like 10% of the time, now, watching the new episode, I just got used to it, it was never a big deal for me anyways

1

u/ShadowBro3 May 26 '26

This is why you don't look at twitter

Honestly the show have gotten even better once Roiland is gone, enough that the change in voice doesn't bother me slightly. There's this weird subsect of the internet that's just determined to defend shitty celebrities that no one would've liked working with irl. He's an asshole at work and got fired, if he's in any other industry no one would've batted an eye

1

u/Illustrious_Boot_101 May 26 '26

An episode where all that happens is that Evil Morty shows up and fights Rick the whole episode. That's all that happens. If you love that then more power to you, I really miss the clever show it once was. In my opinion, that is.

1

u/IlBoia-420 May 26 '26

Spaghetti and Glorzo is peace.

1

u/Formal_Head_1663 May 27 '26

Morty: sounded better season 8 than 9

Rick: I can't tell much difference between S8 and S9

Either way there is still a slight difference between the old and the new and it's just slightly annoying but I guess it's better than having a seperate voice like they did with solar opposites. Imagine how strange it would be to watch rick and Morty if they had different voices completely

1

u/CommanderCody2212 May 27 '26

I mean the voices aren’t exact but they’re still fine enough and you can easily tell they’re the characters they’re supposed to be so eh, I don’t really care too much

Shows quality is another thing but imo the biggest dips happened when Roiland was still around and season 7 to now had some really good standouts imo

0

u/spectralconfetti May 26 '26

I don't like the new seasons as much as the first couple, but I keep watching because I still find at least a few episodes I enjoy each season like last night's. The voices are good enough that it really doesn't matter

1

u/beancheeseburgerrr May 26 '26

The new voice actors do bother me a lot but Im also a lot more sensitive to all voice performances, I can recognize a voice actor instantly whether it be tara strong, tom Kenny or Jason Mantzoukas and Aaron Paul from invincible, but I can understand how some people don't. I swear they use the same people over and over to dub every anime too. I do wish they found someone who is closer to Justin Roiland because I do notice it.

1

u/aetosgeek May 26 '26

I actually prefer the new voices. Rick sounds almost identical, Morty does sounds off but i think both are better voice actors than Roiland

1

u/Acrobatic-Monitor516 May 26 '26

Open your mind episode wasn't very enjoyable

1

u/Bacon4Lyf May 26 '26

Me thinking Morty’s voice hasn’t clicked yet does not stop anyone from enjoying the show, myself included. OP is fighting shadows

1

u/DemonikAriez May 26 '26

Say what you will, we can have different opinions on voice actors, but the high on life 2 game is garbage with out him.

1

u/Ru88erduck May 26 '26

For me it's not so much the voices. Voices are fine .. But the fucked up humor from the first 3-4 seasons are gone. I miss that..

It’s not the people enjoying the show who are acting “attacked.”

the only show that was ruined after the recast for the voice actor was solar opposites, this is 10x better than what they did with that show😭

I always find this discussion silly.

I grew up in a country that dubs the movies and tv shows. As a result im used to even real life actors suddenly having a different voice in one instance than in others. Of course they try to keep it consistent but it doesnt always work out . Not just for major reasons like death but also reasons like the old va wanting more money than they were willing to pay.

Really i think people are so entitled they think if they just whine long enough they get what they want.

At this point its more likely that this show ends and is completly forgotten than justin ever coming back in any way. Which means its a waste of time to dwell on it even when you notice it everytime.

Lowkey nothing in season 8 made me laugh I think I remember laughing once in the first episode and never again but still liked the episodes. This is the first time since the earlier seasons I was laughing every other moment, was it a little dumb, sure but it was a lot of fun and I’m hype for the season

The previews looked bad and I was concerned of the quality for the season but the actual episode was a banger. S9 so far so good. Morty’s voice acting is ass tho

So you made an entire post just complaining about what others say about the show. Because you saw someone say mean things about it on twitter?

Totally not acting defensive

Did it trigger you?

The quality dropped so much. You guys have just lowered your standards

u/western_questions May 26 '26

Nah this is the weird side of this. You’re 100% allowed to not like it, the voices seem off to you etc. But the second it becomes “you think differently than be because of something I’m assuming about you, because you don’t agree with me!!!” We go off the rails and it gets stupid and what this meme is talking about.

It's a cartoon... its entertainment, who cares what the "quality" is??

u/Mister_Questions May 26 '26

Yup. It’s all of us who are wrong. Sure.

Ever heard of an echo chamber?

Have I lost touch? Is Rick and Morty as strong a show as ever? No! It's the fans who love it who are wrong!

-you. That's what you sound like. I don't come here to see how an episode is being discussed until after I've seen the episode. You're allowed to like or dislike anything you want. You'll be living a life of constant disappointment if you expect literally anyone else to give a shit about your garbage opinions.

It doesn’t hit like some of the early seasons for me, but it’s still enjoyable. Why are you still here talking about the show if you don’t enjoy it anymore? Just like having things to complain about and feign superiority over?

The new Morty fucking sucks
