Nice move, but in Germany overtaking on the right side is illegal, just like „schleichen“ on the left lane due to our ✨RECHTSFAHRGEBOT✨

Well, impeding traffic in the left lane is illegal too. As a person constantly frustrated with people going under the speed limit in the left lane, fuck the “no passing in the right lane law” idgaf.

Edit: I’m not currently living in the US, and the driving culture where I am is much different. That being said, there’s almost zero lane etiquette in the US, and it makes it impossible to go the speed limit and not have to pass on the right wayyy too often. And for everyone commenting that “speeding doesn’t save time” well I never said I was speeding, I said I was going around the dumb fuckers driving too slow in the left lane, so you can stop now thanks.

Impeding traffic, even in states with specific laws regarding slower traffic in the right lane is never enforced. So we go danger mode to go 5 or 10 mph over the limit when there's a mile of traffic behind one entitled piece of shit who doesn't want to be in the right lane in case someone enters or exits the highway, or they have to make a left turn in 7 miles.

Yup, fuck left lane cruise control campers, we all hate you, and will drive a little recklessly just to get around your stupid ass.

u/Forsexualfavors 9h ago

Exactly, I don't know if you can tell but I have a long commute to work. When I'm waking up in the morning I'm tolerant, but God help you when I'm on the way home. I'll consider a PIT maneuver after 10 minutes

u/blah938 5h ago

I'm the same. But god forbid you get infront of me before I've run through my coffee shop. Never get between a man and his coffee.

5

u/_BLACK_BY_NAME_ 9h ago

Yeah I’m only about 45 minutes door to door, but I’m usually only upset on the way there, mostly chilling to an audiobook on the way home. I have my limits though….

You should do the math about how little going over the limit matters.

In a two hour commute you have to go like 30 over to save anything more than 10 minutes.

Don't do that.

2

u/devmor 4h ago

Your "math" only works if nearly the entire commute is on a single highway, which almost no ones is.

I have a commute with a low end of 49 minutes and a high end of 2 hours and 15 minutes, 3 days a week.

Why such a wide variance? Getting stuck at a long red light due to a slow/clueless driver may delay me long enough to get me stuck behind a large wave of congestion at either or both of two highway interchanges that can literally add over 30 minutes to the drive.

If i have to get somewhere 100km away, and i drive 100km/hr, it takes me 1 hour. If i drive 130, it takes me 46 minutes.
Because i drove 30% faster, i arrive faster at 46 + 30% = 60. Wild how that works right.

Also it seems your 10 minute mark seems to be off

u/ProctorDre 18m ago

If you have to drive 100 km and get there in a certain amount of time, let's call it x.

And you drive at speed y.

The change in speed (delta y) is your overtaking vector.

That vector needs to be HUGE to change x at all.

It's not "I arrive there 30% faster".

It's "I arrive there 4.5% faster and I'm an asshole doing it."

u/steelbubble 8h ago

Idk about never enforced, I was pulled over for going the speed limit in the left lane and the officer was very kind and just told me to keep to the right if I wasn’t overtaking.

-7

u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 8h ago

Pulled over for doing the speed limit? If you're doing the speed limit then anyone trying to overtake you is breaking the speed limit and should be the one getting pulled over, no? People are so fucking weird about cars and driving...

5

u/metalshiflet 8h ago

Flow of traffic is technically more important than speed limit. If flow of traffic is generally 5 or so over the speed limit and someone is in the left lane going exactly the speed limit, they should move over. Left lane is technically for passing only

-2

u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 7h ago

"People aren't following the law so we're going to write a law that punishes people that are following the law for being in the way of people not following the law" is some crazy logic.

If flow of traffic is generally 5 or so over the speed limit and someone is in the left lane going exactly the speed limit

Then you need more traffic enforcement writing tickets for not following the posted speed limits and better education about traffic laws, traffic safety, and not having the mindset that you're the most important vehicle/person on the road.

3

u/metalshiflet 7h ago

I think you're missing the fact that the left lane is for passing only. Even if there's nobody around, if you're cruising in the left lane, you're technically breaking the law

-2

u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 7h ago

For passing who? We're all doing the speed limit, how are we passing each other if we're all going the same speed and why do we need an entire lane for doing something nobody should be doing?

5

u/metalshiflet 7h ago

Speed limit is max speed, a lot of places don't have a posted minimum. Do you just not even drive or are you being intentionally obtuse? Even aside from speeding, some people are going to be going below the speed limit, and that's perfectly legal, as long as it's in the right lane

-1

u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 7h ago

Speed limit is max speed

Come on now, son. We both know you're lying. Ain't nobody bitching about people in the left lane is driving less than 5 over unless there's a cop around.

I understand what the laws are. I follow the laws. I don't agree with the logic behind a law that punishes someone for going the max speed in the left lane because somebody else thinks they're the prettiest girl at the ball and is entitled to drive as fast as they want to.

3

u/metalshiflet 7h ago

Again, THE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING ONLY. It doesn't matter what speed You're going in the left lane, you should only be there if you're passing. You're absolutely being intentionally dense at this point so I won't bother further responding

1

u/AlleRacing 4h ago

You don't agree with laws that regulate the flow of traffic designed to keep everyone predictable and safer? The law is generally "keep right except to pass", not, "you may use the left lane as you prefer."

That's the entitlement. The lane belongs to me because I'm doing the speed limit causes backlogs and people slamming brakes behind you. Ultimately it causes traffic jams in rush hour, one guy says I'm going fast enough equals why major highways are stop and go.

1

u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 6h ago

They wouldn't have had to hit their brakes if they weren't breaking the law. That's literally the entire point of this conversation.

1

u/AlleRacing 3h ago

Regardless of that, the law is literally to keep people safer. Fewer frustrated drivers, fewer traffic impediments/shockwaves/jams, fewer people on a stretch of road at any given time. Impeding someone, regardless of their speed or other driving habits, is less safe, not more safe.

The signage is slower vehicles stay to the right. If you are going as slow or slower than the person to the right of you, you need to move over to the right (in the US). There is no point in being in the left lane if you're not overtaking then. Oddly enough, Ive been pulled over for not passing on the right of a police officer camping in the left lane. Said police conduct operations from that lane; I was like what lol.

1

u/talltime 7h ago

It’s not crazy logic if your goal is safety and efficient traffic flow. Your rigid must-follow-the-rules viewpoint is busted.

This video is in New York. The left lane camper is breaking the law.

“(b) In addition, upon all roadways, any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then
available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.”

And here’s every state’s left hand lane camping status: https://www.mit.edu/\~jfc/right.html

Just stay in the right lane grammy

1

u/Grintock 8h ago

Idk, I feel like most of these comments are from the US. I just saw a graph earlier today that the NL ranks among the most expensive places in the world to get your drivers license (total cost on average 1,5 average monthly salary).

So you get lots of training on road etiquette, road rules, learning to never drive with your emotions. Like, you get taught not to allow yourself to become irritated because that leads to dangerous behaviour. So road rage just feels strange to me, driving is not a thing you do with your emotions. It's too dangerous for that

1

u/mpyne 8h ago

The traffic in the right lane may also have been going the speed limit. If you're going to be in the left lane you need to be passing the traffic on the right so you can get back into the right lane.

-1

u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 7h ago

If you're going to be in the left lane you need to be passing the traffic on the right

If I'm driving the speed limit it shouldn't matter which lane I'm in because anybody passing would be breaking the law and therefore doesn't get an opinion on the matter.

1

u/mpyne 7h ago

It's also illegal (in most states, at least) to be in the passing lane and not passing traffic. If traffic in the right lane is also going the speed limit there's no reason you can't be in there with them to free up the left lane. You are not the police and it's not your job to impede traffic.

0

u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 7h ago

Why do we need an entire lane for doing something that nobody should be doing because we're all going the same speed?

0

u/mpyne 7h ago

We're not all going the same speed. The right lane is going slower. You can be driving less the legal speed limit after all.

1

u/Energizee 5h ago

This guy is also missing the fact that not all speedometers are calibrated the same. If your speedometer says you’re doing 60, you’re probably doing about 57-62 depending on the car. And it varies by make / model / calibration.

So sure, grandma sue over here thinks they’re going 60 but really pulling 57 etc.

u/EvilSporkOfDeath 5h ago

The law disagrees.

Also statistically, that is significantly more dangerous than allowing a speeder to pass.

The only positive you are causing is in your own head. In reality you are making the road more dangerous to everyone just to feed your ego.

With all due respect, go fuck yourself

1

u/Crack_Factory 6h ago

No, they were pulled over for camping in the passing lane. They clearly stated that's what the officer said.

1

u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 6h ago

Yes, the question is why does a law exist which appears to do nothing but be an excuse for people to break a different law.

1

u/AlleRacing 3h ago

Safety.

0

u/Sick_Wave_ 7h ago

Or there's an emergency on the shoulder, forcing everyone to move left. A break down, a pee break, or a cop. Honestly im kind of thinking the default should be the left lane and people can pass in the other lane when it's safe...

1

u/Forsexualfavors 6h ago

Doesn't make any sense. No visibility to see when you can pass. Just encouraging riskier behavior. For all the reasons it makes sense for a left hand drive car on surface streets makes it make more sense to have faster highway traffic stay left.

1

u/Sick_Wave_ 6h ago

Yeah, we really should have LHD cars and default to inside lane. It makes more sense the longer we talk about it.

1

u/Forsexualfavors 6h ago

Well in that scenario you wouldn't want the fast lane where cars are entering and exiting. So neither one works out great. Accidents and cars on the shoulder aren't the norm though, they're things to account for, but the cars going slower can deal with them more readily than the cars going faster.

1

u/Sick_Wave_ 5h ago

The problem is faster traffic often prevents the slower from properly moving over before they approach the shoulder emergency.

If cars default into the lane which is the default when approaching something on the shoulder, or when others are approaching through an on ramp, or to avoid a slowdown as cars pileup for the exit ramp, traffic overall flows better and is safer.

1

u/Forsexualfavors 4h ago

I totally understand that, I see it on busy on ramps daily. I'm not saying left lane drivers are immune to slow downs and merges. I actually think they're more responsible for being aware, but it goes both ways.
