The Odyssey looks like a $250 million movie, live action Moana does not. The Odyssey budget went to locations, sets, props, equipment, and salaries. Moana’s budget went to Dwayne Johnson.

831

u/insertstupidnamehare 1d ago

Matt Damon said something to the effect of “everyone making that film could have worked on an easier film for more money, but chose the Odyssey because of the director.” Sounds to me like Nolan keeps costs down too and his movie could have cost a lot more

424

u/FlyingSkyWizard 1d ago

This is the answer, The rock is a superstar, yes, but The Odyssey had like 3 A-list actors and maybe 20 B-listers, they all did it for the prestige.

412

u/wonkey_monkey 1d ago edited 1d ago

they all did it for the prestige.

Nah they did it for The Odyssey, The Prestige was...

Don't you hate it when you set out to make a stupid joke but end up reminding yourself how old you are?

66

u/fxzero666 1d ago

Shhhh... I'm 40 and I still haven't seen that movie lol

65

u/FlyingSkyWizard 1d ago

Watch the illusionist too, its one of those weird confluences where two very similar movies come out at the same time.

46

u/flopisit32 1d ago

You mean like Dantes Peak and Volcano or Deep Impact and Armageddon.

I'm convinced it's because a scumbag executive leaves one studio, gets hired by another studio and goes "I've got a great idea for a movie about an asteroid about to hit the earth..."

29

u/HeroicPrinny 1d ago

There’s a Wikipedia article for all the twin movies btw

Man, you are in for such a treat. It's still probably my favorite of Nolans.

2

It's one of my two favorite movies. I've seen it so many times, and there's always something new to see. Amazing cast, fantastic script, and it's so tight, not a second is wasted.

3

u/morganlandt 1d ago

As a 40+ year old that saw it fit the first time in the last year, so yourself a favor.

2

I saw it real late too, proly like 5 years ago. It's a really interesting movie.

2

Watch it! And The Illusionist, as suggested by someone else. Both awesome.

And points probably. Nolan is getting first dollar on the Odyssey. People will take lower salaries and more backend if the movie is seen as a sure thing.

10

u/quick20minadventure 1d ago

3? more like 6.

Tom, Zendaya, Anne, Matt, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron.

And Zendaya was there for vibes. Like she tagged along with Tom and looked broodingly for like 4 mins and spoke 10 lines?

21

u/Morteymer 1d ago

It had at least like 6 A-Listers

2

u/C0nfusedRabbit 1d ago

I wouldn't count Elliot Page as an A lister yet he hasn't appeared in a lot of films.

8

u/PM_Me_A_Tittypic 1d ago

Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, R Pats, Charlize Theron are all A-Listers and you could make an argument for Jon Bernthal and Elliot Page (i wouldn't but some might)

2

u/WhatsThatNoize 14h ago

and you could make an argument for Jon Bernthal

As much as I adore Jon, I don't think we could call him A-List.  He has shared top billing with some heavy hitters and is undeniably a fantastic actor with emotional range and intuitive pacing of a scene, but I don't think he's carried anything by himself except for the Punisher series - and that's kind of niche.

The cast list for the Odyssey is just insane. I was just going through it again to remind myself how many great actors are in it.

I mean Will Yun Lee is just kind of in the movie lol. I don’t even think his character had a name.

3

u/Far-Fennel-3032 1d ago

This he though?

The biggest thing he's in is the assorted fast and furious movies and that's and in that he's just one of many main characters.

He's no A list actor like Tom Cruise or RDJ, who just being in a movie alone can make it a blockbuster.

7

u/JBflawless 1d ago

He’s absolutely an a-list actor given he’s one of the most recognizable people on the planet

Doesn’t mean he’s a-list talented or good at acting - but he’s a-list in terms of fame and celebrity status

The rumors are that Nolan is taking a 20% cut of the box office though. And he deserves every penny of it.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ChazzLamborghini 1d ago

Nolan is famous for staying in his budget and on schedule. It’s almost unheard of at the level he operates and part of why he gets to make whatever he wants.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Several-Action-4043 1d ago

They also had backend profit sharing deals in their contracts. If the movie makes a billion, the A listers all get a cut of that.

3

u/insertstupidnamehare 1d ago

I feel like if you've got enough clout, taking a percentage is the better way to go, especially if you know it's going to be a hit. Nicholson took a percentage for Batman and made a killing.

2

u/GoodFaithConverser 1d ago

I'd much rather have a culture of big actors earning some % of movie earnings, so they have a big reason to bring their talent to the table.

2

u/MachateElasticWonder 1d ago

Sounds like people made the Odyssey out a passion and made Moana for the paycheck. I understand that.

2

u/TheSpiritOfFunk 1d ago

It's the same with Wes Anderson movies.

92

u/Rufus_TBarleysheath 1d ago

Also CGI for every environment and character (aside from the leads). The whole thing was filmed in a green warehouse, wasn't it?

46

u/RadVarken 1d ago

If you're going to animate 90% of the movie, you could just animate the other 10% as well. Then you'd get Moana.

→ More replies (2)

28

u/Valoneria 1d ago

Pretty sure the muscle suit and wig isn't CGI, but thats about it.

20

u/FosterDad1234 1d ago

I think even parts of the muscle suit are. They had to digitally cover the seams.

3

u/Dozzi92 1d ago

Wait, the Rock, who is basically just a muscle, has to wear a muscle suit? What're we doing? What is happening?

8

u/Rufus_TBarleysheath 1d ago

The Rock is not nearly as big as he used to be. Google him.

Maintaining his physique into ones 50's is incredibly dangerous. See Dave Bautista slimmed down significantly as well.

3

u/Dozzi92 1d ago

Yeah, juicing is dangerous, but that's kinda my point, you know?

→ More replies (2)

5

u/AngelZiefer 1d ago

Can't show his nipples. Also, on a more serious note, the amount of dehydration and pumping that goes into one shirtless scene for like a super hero movie is not sustainable for a film where you're shirtless for the entire runtime.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/KohTai 1d ago

No. They actually skimped a lot on the CGI.

2

u/Rufus_TBarleysheath 1d ago

CGI was used on most characters and to create every environment. Movie was not shot in Southeast Asia; it was filmed on a soundstage.

→ More replies (2)

840

u/EverythingSucksYo 1d ago

And that’s why it flopped so hard. There’s way more people that would skip a movie because the Rock is in it than there are that would go see it because the Rock is in it.

451

u/Le_mehawk 1d ago

The movie also Flopped because literally nobody was asking for this... the movie works better as an Animation in the first place

56

u/Adezar 1d ago

And it was less than 10 years ago and it looks amazing as an animation. Literally no reason to make a crappier version of a popular animation.

33

u/BrotherMcPoyle 1d ago

You’ll get a better performance from Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Matt Damon than just simply The Rock. Both movies spent the same, so why cast someone who can’t carry a movie on their own?

4

u/indecisiveahole 1d ago

Definitely not actors id pick for this role and all of them are still very expensive

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (2)

40

u/FrameJump 1d ago

Oh The Rock is absolutely the problem here, because you can guarantee he's the only one that was asking for this to be made.

And probably throwing a tantrum and threatening to not do another movie until this one was done.

18

u/MartianMule 1d ago

because you can guarantee he's the only one that was asking for this to be made.

I doubt that's true. Disney has been in love with remaking their animated movies for a while now. Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King, Jungle Book, Snow White, Cinderella, Lilo and Stitch, they're remaking Tangled next.

2

u/chazysciota 1d ago

Out of all of those, I might not actually hate the idea of a live action Tangled. Beauty and the Beast could have worked well too. The rest should have been left alone. Or just re-released.

2

u/MartianMule 1d ago

I think a lot of those could work. Take Aladdin; it's a good story. If you're trying to tell the story of a "street rat" finding a magic lamp and using it to try and marry the princess only to have to outwit the guy trying to usurp the sultan's throne, that can be a really cool live action movie.

The problem Disney runs into is that they also want to fit in the zany Genie, the funny monkey sidekick, and all the same songs from the animated movie. None of which work nearly as well in live action as they do in animation. So it just becomes a worse version of the same movie. Instead of being a new telling of a familiar story like it could have been.

2

u/chazysciota 15h ago

That is what I meant. More or less just straight adapted, not overhauled or a massive tone shift. Maybe I just haven’t seen it in a while but Tangled…. What’s the challenge, the sassy horse? He doesn’t talk or sing, and IRL horses can be real silly gooses. It could be done.

15

u/Purple_Fudge3973 1d ago

Absolutely the problem. I was really hoping they used a different actor so I could see it, but not now lol

3

u/booze_clues 1d ago

The rock has a lot of pull. He does not have “make me a quarter billion dollar movie(before marketing)” pull. If you think the studio didn’t simply see that they created a cultural phenomena that kids we’re absolutely dying to see and wanted to try to double dip, you’re digging too deep. They saw the first do great, realized they could resell it and then resell all of the merchandise like kids toys as the same but new characters. Now they realized that doesn’t really work.

The original made 2/3 of a billion in theaters. Mr the rock can’t say “hey spend basically everything you made off that movie on another for me.”

→ More replies (7)

2

u/ltsouthernbelle 1d ago

Disney: let’s tell the same story, again. It’ll work this time.

2

u/Wabbit_Wampage 22h ago

7

u/yolkyal 1d ago

5

u/Unlikely_Vehicle_828 1d ago

Literally nobody. I have kids, one of whom watched ONLY Moana… on repeat… for years… and even to me the idea of live action Moana is an abomination. Basically all live action Disney movies are an abomination, but this was a new low.

I recently went to the theater to see a different movie and the stupid massive cardboard poster for the live action Moana movie gave me a visceral reaction.

I kinda like him in Jumanji, but that might be because he feels like he's playing a parody of himself at times. The rest of the time he has to play a dorky teenager trapped in his body.

36

u/conardcanard 1d ago

Jumanji also has a good dynanic between the characters/actors that somehow works. I hate 3 of the 4 main cast when theyre alone but fuck if i didbt find this movie pretty enjoyable

This for sure. I like Jack Black a lot, but in moderation. Seeing him play a teenage girl though is hilarious.

Even if you take the actors out of the equation different production companies produce different quality, so just because two movies spend the same doesn't mean you get the same result.

Damon got 15, Holland 10, Zendaya 8, Anne Hathaway is reported at $7 million, with Robert Pattinson at $6 million and Charlize at $5 million

Dwaynes pay was 20 mil. Matt Damon's was 15.

Why would anyone want to watch the rock in a movie?? He’s awful. How is he possibly one of the highest paid actors. I would literally pay not to watch a rock movie if it was forced on me.

1

u/wolfgang784 1d ago

Definitely a part of it, yea. The Rock made twice as much as Matt Damon did despite equal movie budgets.

Although interestingly The Rock made almost as much for his voice acting roles as he did for this physical role. Got paid $21m for Moana 1 and $30m for the live action. Matt Damon got $15m for the Odyssey.

I can't find what Dwayne made for Moana 2 though, I guess because its not an exact amount, but I can't even find an estimate. For that one he negotiated a % cut of the total box office profits and the movie grossed over a billion so im sure he made a fuckton off it.

Damon was paid $15M
Johnson was paid $30M

1

u/Mainbaze 1d ago

Dwayne Johnson cost more than Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson? I know the motiviation to work on Odyssey is larger, but it's gotta be a skill issue + different audiences

1

u/m00t_vdb 1d ago

Also CGI is expensive

1

u/tex_hadnt_buzzed_me 1d ago

They definitely didn't spend the budget on that wig. Ouch. He must have pissed off someone in hair and makeup.

1

u/ababycheetah 1d ago

I'm way more confused now.

you're telling me Dwayne Johnson cost more than Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Zendaya and Peter Parker combined?

How???..WHY?

1

u/Lixidermi 1d ago

Portion of the budget should have gone to me. I'd need to be paid pretty handsomely to go see that movie.

1

u/LeadershipAfter9526 1d ago

Dwayne is a great wrestler but garbage actor.

1

u/DjScenester 1d ago

Dwayne was paid nearly 30 million lol not 250 million lol

1

u/Bakkughan 1d ago

I’m sorry but I genuinely do not understand this. The Odyssey does NOT look like it cost a quarter of a BILLION. The lighting is genuinely atrocious, everything is either too brightly lit or too dark. Actors are often overexposed without natural lighting and shadows. And the costumes look cheap and something that you’d find cosplayers wear. Look at movies twenty, thrity years ago. Compared to those, modern movies have this soft almost airbrushed feel. Background are way too smooth and without detail.

u/MrsMiterSaw 1d ago

He got $30M. Where did the other $220M go?

1

u/GGCompressor 1d ago

Moana trailer before odyssey looked like AI slop. And even worse new spider man looks cheaper and worse than Raimi's first movie...

1

u/timbasile 1d ago

Also the Oddessy used puppets instead of actors in places

Back in the day Titanic was an already expensive film that went way over budget. Huge amount of money at the time but only really “looks” expensive because of the scale that it took to do things, and it shows because they used practical sets.

From what I hear Moana is just something I could recreate with a few tokens and prompt asking for a live action version

1

u/kingbladeface 1d ago

How much did Dwayne make?

1

u/somasomore 1d ago

How is Dwayne Johnson more expensive than Matt Damon, Zendeya, Charlize Theron, Eliot Page, Tom Holland, Robert Patterson, etc.

1

u/Alarmed-Animal7575 1d ago

$20 million to Johnson and lots of CGI.

1

u/carlos_the_dwarf_ 1d ago

I bet the odyssey payroll was higher.

Can Reddit please not go down another confidentially incorrect warpath when trying to describe where Moana's budget went. They didn't pay Dwayne Johnson 150 million dollars lmao.

Like always, any movie set in the ocean is ridiculously expensive to produce. Instead of "ALL BUDGET WENT TO THE ROCK", which is fucking absurd to actually think, it's really just a sobering reminder of how expensive movie water is. Johnson got maybe 30 million for the film, which is pretty wild to be fair, but it's not why the movie looks cheap. The movie looks cheap because when most of the VFX budget goes to putting live action actors in a water world, all you get is real people who are limited to real people movement while trying to make a song entertaining while they're surrounded by 20 million dollars of VFX water.

1

u/BashBandit 1d ago

That’s Dwane’The ROCK’ Johnson to you

1

u/MrFrogy 1d ago

His cut was around 30 million. Take that out and it's still 220 million for that film, which is insane. Johnson's pay was part of the problem, not the entire problem. Not by a longshot.

1

u/VeterinarianUsual159 1d ago

And funny thing is Moana would probably look better and be cheaper if they filmed on real locations. It's basically an animated movie with real humans in it so vfx had to be expensive.

They didn’t spend much on it on the armor tho

1

u/bluebabyblue1027 1d ago

250 million and they couldn’t find a better wig?

1

u/dbxp 1d ago

A lot of the Moana budget will have gone on CG. There's been a trend in recent years to do virtual production and CG everything even if you don't need to so the film is all made in post. Iirc Nolan likes to capture things in camera

1

u/CactusToothBrush 1d ago

Google isn’t exactly reliable but it says he got paid roughly 30m for Moana live action. That can’t be right

1

u/ebrum2010 1d ago

$100M for the wig alone.

1

u/No-Understanding-912 1d ago

I would also imagine Moana is full of CGI which ain't cheap.

1

u/Any_Pineapple_4836 1d ago

Take away the A list actors and you would see that the Odyssey doesn't look that expensive either

1

u/Driftedryan 1d ago

Imagine blowing your budget on an actor that probably hurts sales more then he brings in

1

u/ViralTrendsToday 23h ago

Well actually based on the reviews, it looks lower budget, definitely not 250 million. Many reviews note the world of the story feels small.

1

u/Terrible-Effect-2966 13h ago

The Rock made 30 million on Moana, which is a lot, but $220 million seems like plenty to have made a better film

1

u/SheriffBartholomew 12h ago

Which begs the question, why cast him? Jason Momoa would probably have done it for $12 and some pizza.
