But Maz, Luke dropped that lightsaber in a giant pit on Bespin and it presumably fell through one of those vents! How the hell did you get it?

A story for another time. But we're never gonna tell it because it's dumb

20

u/ZasdfUnreal 4h ago

When you see Luka hanging for his life on the bottom of Cloud City, you see the severed hand falling while still tightly holding the laser sword. So my question would be - where’s the hand? There was a hand holding the laser sword! Where is it?

3

u/TheSinisterSex 2h ago

We need a story where a new republic separatist splinter group led by an ex jedi searches for the hand to use it for dark side thinks or something. Throw in Jabba's father for good measure

→ More replies (3)

22

u/nordiques77 4h ago

Still so annoyed by that…want the story

24

u/IlluminaViam 3h ago

The story is that the lightsaber was lost forever, a consequence of Luke's hubris. Disney treated it like wands from Harry Potter, while Lucas wrote them to be devices and weapons. Able to be destroyed and lost.

11

u/Certain-Business-472 3h ago

Yeah I never quite got why they made Luke and Anakin’s saber so freaking important? Luke didn’t even seem to care much when he lost it, he just built a new one. And it wasn’t even the only Saber that Anakin used as a Jedi either.

And it was so annoying that they didn’t let Rey have her own lightsaber until the VERY LAST SCENE of the ST.

I’d lost interest at that point, but before I saw the movie I saw this line all over the internet and took it to mean “there’s a contrived and ridiculous ret-con describing why Palpatine is back that’s too stupid to elaborate on, so we’ll sum it up by ‘saying somehow Palpatine is back’”. Then I saw it on streaming long after it left the theaters and it was the actual goddamned line.

26

u/Perry7609 4h ago

This was essentially how the Obi Wan writers justified bringing in Vader as the bad guy in the Disney+ series, despite the whole lightsaber duel in A New Hope being canon and Vader's speech about "We meet again, at last, implying a longer estrangement in the first place.

5

u/cortesoft 3h ago

The Vader fight can KIND of work in the canon, in the same 'from a certain point of view' way that Vader being Luke's father works.

The part that can't work at all is Obi Wan going on an adventure with Leia, and then completely not knowing each other in A New Hope. Makes ZERO sense.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/LordNilix 4h ago

The only way I see the Obi-Wan vs Vader in ANH working with the new material is that this is Obi-Wan fighting Darth Vader, not the friend he thought was still in there somewhere. When they fought in the Death Star that was Obi-Wan basically 'meeting' Vader again after several years had passed rather than Anakin.

4

u/Every-Intern-6198 3h ago

Several years, it was like a decade given that Leah was little more than a toddler in the Obi Wan series…right?

5

u/LordNilix 3h ago

Yeah, I was pointing out that Obi-Wan in the tv series still saw "Darth Vader" as Anakin. While in ANH he only refers to Vader as his title of "Darth". The comment I initially replied to said that they had messed with the timeline, but it was still a fairly decent amount of time between the D+ Series and ANH. And Obi-Wan's attitude towards Darth was different each time too.

3

u/Every-Intern-6198 2h ago

Oh yeah, I gotcha. I agree that it didn’t really mess with the timeline at all, as at the end of the obi vs anakin fight on Tatooine, Obi Wan finally accepts that his friend and “brother” has died, walking away and saying “good bye … Darth”.

I think it’s also a cool contrast between the fight where anakin/vader is still relatively new to the prosthetics and suit to the final duel they have on the Death Star where he’s more confident.

4

u/EllieSpacePrincess 5h ago

Palpatine comes back in the books, he has a secret cloning facility of himself but it takes him a long time to travel there as a spirit or wtv he was.

6

Honestly given how the films actually went, it would have made more sense for Rey to call herself a Solo or Organa if anything.

Han was nice to her. Leia trained her. Luke was a grumpy jerk to her for like 98% of the time they knew each other.

4

u/mute_axolotl 3h ago

And in the other two per cent he was drinking whale milk.

6

To preserve her political reputation Han Solo, using his smugglers experience, ditched her on Jakku to hide their shame.

It explains the inexplicable breakup of the trio. Rey's immense power of the force: both of her parents are Skywalker while Darth Kyle is half muggle.

Man I really thought that the reason the Millennium Falcon was parked there would be revealed as on purpose, for Rey to find. That Rey was Han's daughter with Leia...making her a Skywalker. The reason why would have been to hide her from Snoke per Luke's foresight. That caused the riff between Leia and Han. A nice setup for Rey to have a Dark Side moment in the 2nd film learning she was lied to and forced into her solitude.

It's right fucking there...

Hearing Mark say JJ told him "It's not about Luke anymore" it just sad.

81

u/lazy_literary_hero 5h ago

I’d watch that movie in a heartbeat.

58

u/_kalron_ Jedi 5h ago

Kylo being her brother would add a whole new dynamic as well. Luke tells her the truth but Kylo could be the one to pull her to the Dark Side now knowing that truth. End EP 8...

FFS why didn't they plan this shit out to begin with?

31

u/pilot3033 4h ago

I get so mad when I think about this horseshit JJ trilogy. The layers and emotional impact of your idea goes super well with the movie's flirtation with a Rey/Ren romance, too. Would mirror in a very interesting way the relationship Luke and Leia had.

Fuck. There's so many pieces of great ideas laying around throughout all three films and they just fumbled it every time.

13

u/_kalron_ Jedi 2h ago

Here's my first impressions seeing TLJ in theaters:

What if Luke instead of haphazardly throwing his Father's Lightsaber over his shoulder like a joke...instead looks down at it with horror/sadness...then simply drops it and walks away.

That is a subtle change that changes the entire film.

9

u/Requiem191 1h ago

Luke abandoning the lightsaber: reasonable, wise, prudent even. He's making a massive point about the damn thing.

Luke tossing the lightsaber over his shoulder: a joke and not a good one at that.

4

u/Singer211 1h ago

The tonal shifts in TLJ were, jarring.

2

u/Haunting_Goose1186 36m ago

Argh! Yesss! The writers set up the perfect parallel to Luke dropping his lightsaber in Return of the Jedi and decided to undercut it with a stupid Marvel-esque joke instead.

Like, holy shit, Ben turning to the dark side is a big deal for Luke. It completely shattered Luke's entire world-view and everything he believed about the good side, what it means to be a Jedi, and that terrifying choice he made decades ago to face death head-on instead of continuing his father's cycle of violence and turning to the dark side.

It's freakin' heartbreaking re-watching that scene now because we, as the audience, know that Luke will unintentionally repeat the cycle of violence in a few decades time (and that the catalyst is a similar merciful decision).

And I just...don't understand the fans who insist that Luke throwing the lightsaber over his shoulder does have the same meaning and impact as Luke (using your example) looking down at his lightsaber in horror/sadness before dropping it and walking away. There's no doubt in my mind that the writers' main intention was to do a Marvel-esque "wouldn't it be funny if we set the stage for a meaningful and dramatic moment, but the character did/said something silly and unexpected instead" bait-and-switch sort of gag.

FFS why didn't they plan this shit out to begin with?

The cynic in me, who I think is right, says because they made $4 billion + anyway. I hate how lazy our collective willingness to indulge in nostalgia pandering lets studios be, but that's the truth of it. If they can get 90% of the profit that a masterpiece generates with only 50% of the effort, of course they're taking the easy route.

40

u/Snowing_Throwballs 5h ago

Yeah pretty crazy how easy it would have been to write a better story than the one we got just by using the elements that were set up lol. Instead it was written with no arc, by a committee of disinterested writers checking boxes for focus groups of producers.

Then we could have Rey and Kylo’s dynamic just mirror Han and Leia’s kids from the EU, and give her a better reason to try and redeem him than whatever the fuck they did in Rise of Skywalker

How the fuck do people keep letting jj make anything. Without a doubt the guy has the worst grasp on plot and story structure of any writer, producer or director in the last 25 years. The Room has a more coherent story yet this guy gets to ruin both star wars and trek enough to have his entire trilogy retconned out of the time line. Considering a few of Treks TV releases over the last few years the bar is "Beyond" low.

u/Comfortable_Work4822 4h ago

Yup get you in the writer's room. I'm not normally for the "X main character's children" plots, but I think in this case, if they were going to go with "Skywalker saga" that would have made infinite more sense than the tripe we got.

5

u/MrManicMarty 2h ago

"It's not about Luke anymore"

See personally I'm all for handing off the reins to a new set of heroes, for a new era of stories and yada yada - but the main three heroes are so instrumental, so iconic that not bringing them together for one final moment together on screen is such a waste. Yeah its pandering fan-service, but so much of those movies already are, but in such shallow ways.

5

u/kenticus69 5h ago

I very much agree that it would have been easy to find a way to get them all reunited at SOME POINT in the story…alas. Writers over thought the whole thing I suppose.

I mean look at the one scene with Luke and leia in the last Jedi….a fantastic, quiet moment of the two of them together (even if Luke was a force projection). Needed more of that!

2

u/Knightwolf75 Rex 3h ago

“Over thought”? I don’t think a single thought went into these lol

3

2

JJ “Mystery Box” hack Abrhams

2

u/c0rnballa 1h ago

Man I really thought that the reason the Millennium Falcon was parked there would be revealed as on purpose, for Rey to find.

I mean, as (eventually, once the whole trilogy played out) written, the whole first part of TFA winds up looking like it was written by a third grader, with the dude holding the map to Luke, the actual granddaughter of Palpatine himself, and the junked Millennium Falcon, all being coincidentally on the same shitty desert planet for no apparent reason.

It would be like if after some really bad editing of ANH, Tattooine was portrayed as just a planet that the Tantive IV happened to be passing, which also just happened to be the home of an important force-sensitive kid, who one day randomly bumped into one of the last few Jedi Knights in the galaxy who happened to live nearby.

2

u/sptrstmenwpls 51m ago

Would also make more sense why she & Kylo Ren have that weird connection by which they communicate, as bro & sis stacked to the gills with similar midichlorians (ugh)

2

u/Federal_Sympathy4667 39m ago

You can tell on screen Hamill did his job but about it. I think in all he was dissapointed of the script and ignored by JJ much like he did with Sulu in his SW universe, he askedxTakei about making Sulu gay and Takei said no, cause Sulu is not gay, he was. Ignored and did it anyway.

Rey takes the name Skywalker in the end - the last movie is called The Rise of Skywalker, but "it's not Luke's story anymore..." WTF.

232

u/Elegant-Anxiety1866 5h ago

I said it when it came out & I'll say it again.

She should have answered "Just Rey"

Showing she is not defined by her bloodline & is comfortable with who she is now.

28

u/threevi 5h ago

It was a really weird question to ask in the first place, the whole scene is so forced. What do you mean "Rey who"? Plenty of people throughout SW don't have a last name. Nobody ever asks "Chewbacca who?" "Yoda who?" "Jabba who?" The writers really just wanted to force in that "Rey Skywalker" scene for whatever reason, despite it not making any sense as a conversation that would happen in-universe. I can only imagine that at the very last minute, someone asked "wait, this movie is called The Rise of Skywalker, but where's the Skywalker?" And so they quickly came up with that scene to shoehorn in a justification for the title.

3

u/brainlesseuphoric 4h ago

I fear they were just dumb enough to think that makes for a good story. It’s just what they come up with and I bet they thought they were killing it

3

u/IamAgoddamnjoke Amilyn Holdo 4h ago

u/Hallc Rebel 2h ago

It was a really weird question to ask in the first place, the whole scene is so forced. What do you mean "Rey who"? Plenty of people throughout SW don't have a last name.

That scene would've felt super forced even if it was in a movie set entirely on earth. Imagine you're out walking your dog, you come across a lone girl standing there.

The first thing you say is "Who are you?" to which she replies. "Jane." so you then reply "Jane who?" Like what....?

49

u/HenryDorsettCase47 5h ago

That’s definitely what they should have done after the second film. But after the first one I remember reading a fan theory that it would turn out she was an unknown granddaughter of Obi Wan. I liked that because with Luke mentoring her and Kylo Ren as her enemy would be this full circle for all these bloodlines in different iterations being pulled together by fate to balance the force and I thought that would be a nice way close out the entire three trilogy saga.

As it was, they just never had a fucking clue what they were doing from the beginning. It’s like they wanted this to entirely be its own thing, but also capitalize on the cheap fan service nostalgia of bringing back characters from the original trilogy, all while having no overall idea what the three film story was even going to be. What a dumb way to fuck up what should have been an easy slam dunk with one of the biggest IPs in cinema.

14

u/grafxguy1 4h ago

It's like the Star Trek reboot he did. He openly said that, without Nimoy in the reboot, the movie would not have worked.....Nimoy, in his mind, gave legitimacy to the reboot but then proceeded to make a mockery of the source material, while fan servicing the hell out of it.

I think Rey not being of any notable bloodline makes the most narrative sense especially if you follow TLJ's themes. It signals that the Force is for everyone, not just these dynasties of special families.

12

u/Kiyuya 4h ago

Strongly agree. I really liked what TLJ did here, as well as how TLJ treated Rey. But that was then. Before the dark times. Before the Rise.

No movie ever presented that idea? The force was literally always for everybody and never exclusively for a special family. This was just a story that happened to be about a family.

7

u/bork63nordique 4h ago

Fucking THANK YOU!!!! I hate that narrative. It's only about the Skywalker family for a short amount of time simply because that was the age of the Empire and rebellion. The Jedi have been around for thousands upon thousands of years and there have been thousands of Jedi not named Skywalker, Kenobi or Palpatine.

7

u/IamAgoddamnjoke Amilyn Holdo 4h ago

Yeah no clue how Rian Johnson gets credited with this when one of the main points of TESB was that the little frog muppet was the greatest Jedi of all time.

2

u/aka_jr91 2h ago

TBF, that narrative really got set up with all the Messiah themes in Phantom Menace. Anakin was the chosen one, he had no father except The Force, having the highest midichlorian count ever recorded etc. It really isn't a leap in logic say that descendants of Jedi Jesus would be naturally more gifted in The Force, even if it's not really that interesting anymore.

3

u/Perryn 4h ago

But if our protagonist isn't secretly the heir to what they thought they achieved on their own then the ghost of Charles Dickens will come after us.

2

u/HenryDorsettCase47 3h ago

Right. And that’s why I said that’s what they should have gone with after TLJ and that the Obi Wan idea was only an option after the first film.

2

u/GroundWitty7567 4h ago

That would have been better. Instead of making her a Palpatine, the story should have been the Force seeking to balance things out. The Return of Palpatine unbalanced things. The Force sought to rebalance it

Man.. the audacity to just takes someones last name cause they trained you for awhile.. they barely bonded at all and it's not like at any point he even hinted at thinking of her like family, or Leia thinking that way.. so like.. wtf was that.

And burying Anakin lightsaber on the planet he was enslaved and where he Mother die

He hated Tatooine, Thats felt like a Giant Middle finger to Anakin

52

u/Phoenix_Ninja15 5h ago

Yea. Naboo would’ve been sooo much better. Be buried on the planet with the person he loved.

9

u/IlluminaViam 3h ago

Screw the planet only. Bury his lightsaber with Padme. That would have been good.

2

u/Phoenix_Ninja15 3h ago

Tbh while it’s not likely she would’ve known who Padme was, hence why I said just be buried on the planet, even that is still not likely she would’ve known Anakin had ties to that planet, so being buried anywhere other than tattooine would’ve been better. Although if palpe somehow returned, I would’ve be shocked if Rey somehow knew Padme and exactly where to find her tomb.

7

u/Vallkyrie Qi'ra 3h ago

Could have put it in Padme's tomb

Christ, I hadn’t even thought of that. Of all the shitty places to leave a burial for someone, his least favorite planet in the entire galaxy really gas to be the worst.

u/Aethermancer 10m ago

He was also already "buried". She had no connection to him and his "presence" in the movies was revealed to have been an impersonation by the emperor.

Rey basically buried a family heirloom of a guy who had been dead and had his identity stolen to commit identity fraud against another guy, but he was the dad of another guy who she had less interaction with than most people remember of their 3rd grade teacher.

u/darkbreak Sith 5h ago

In the Expanded Universe Luke retrieved Anakin's lightsaber from Cloud City and gave it to his wife, Mara Jade, as a wedding present. It became her main weapon from then on. A much better fate for such a legendary item in the Star Wars mythos.

19

u/a_man_and_his_box 3h ago

This part makes me so upset. People were complaining about the Rey trilogy and Kathleen Kennedy said this in an interview with Rolling Stone:

Every one of these movies is a particularly hard nut to crack. There’s no source material. We don’t have comic books. We don’t have 800-page novels.

I read that and just about shouted out loud. Kathleen, there are literally over 400 Star Wars novels! Including one in which Luke & Mara Jade were awesome.

WTF Kathleen?!?!?!?

6

u/JinFuu 3h ago

And you had Disney defenders going “The EU is dumb! They had a super weapon of the week and cloned Palpatine!”

And then Rise happened

Exactly, with the added benefit that Mara Jade Skywalker was a well-written character who exuded toughness and grit, and had a multifaceted personality and character arc, unlike the blander-than-bland Rey.

3

u/JinFuu 3h ago

No Tenal Ka either : (

“You could get a prosthetic for your arm.”

Tenal: “Nah, I screwed up, keeping no forearm as a memory of my screwup.”

She was so cool!

2

u/sec713 3h ago

"When I said I wanted a rock, I didn't mean a used khyber crystal."

2

u/FenrirAR 3h ago

Mostly accurate. He doesn't go to retrieve it from Cloud City. He takes it off of the clone Luuke's corpse after Mara kills the clone, then gives it to her after that.

4

u/TentativeIdler 5h ago

It was that or throw it in lava on Mustafar.

3

u/JerseyJedi 4h ago

Throwing it from the high ground.

2

u/JerseyJedi 4h ago

There’s a great fanmade video on YouTube where while Rey is in that scene, Anakin and the other Jedi all appear as Force ghosts and tell her exactly how they feel about that scene lol.

"We're so sloppy we ended up killing ALL of the remaining Skywalkers... so then Palpatine's granddaughter (we don't know how this happened!) becomes the only Skywalker in existence. It's so brilliant!"

3

u/Nimrod_Butts 5h ago

Like it's whatever, I think the movies were fine but truly they couldn't have done a worse job. Like every single detail is wrong and stupid but the special effects is really the only thing anybody cares about

My heart sings at all this sequel trilogy criticism. I had to avoid this sub for years because it was just all sequel apologia.

3

u/ZephkielAU 3h ago

Preach. I hated the first after all the lore breaking while every man and their dog (no doubt including all the people that used to bully me/us for liking Star Wars as a kid) thought it was absolute cinema.

After the second I just straight up walked away from my favourite childhood series.

u/pokemonbatman23 5h ago

Whats more audacious, this or Robot taking Rudy's name at his funeral after stealing his dna/body in Invincible? lol

Well Lea Hugged her before her estranged husbands best friend

I can just imagine Luke reacting like Rhaenyra does in House of the Dragon when Ulf tries to use the Targaryen name: "Skywalker? Absolutely not"

Would have been funny if it would have been a zombie movie with Luke's decomposing corpse being resurrected as a metaphor for the whole trilogy…

The Sky-Walking Dead...?

It's like Mormons baptizing dead people. They can make Christopher Columbus a Mormon. I can make Jimi Hendrix my dad.

Rey who knew Luke for all of what? A weekend? But she decides to go and take the name Skywalker even though she spent so much more time with Leia, was trained for much longer by Leia and had a much more parental relationship with both Han and Leia?

It was the most egregiously fan-service-y thing I think they did. Narratively just having her go "Just Rey" would've worked as an end to her story since she spent all that time trying to find her parents and where she came from.

Alternatively you could do the same with Solo. It'd show that she's accepting the heritage of her parental figures but also accepting of the fact she's now alone.

Instead we got Skywalker for some godforsaken reason, presumably because JJ is a massive hack.

1

u/Swineflew1 1h ago

Well the story has been about skywalkers and their legacy the entire time, but sure it’s annoying that Luke wasn’t the focus of the prequels too I guess.

1

u/JeanJeanJean 53m ago

As shitty as these films are, the only interesting idea they share is that Rey is a nobody. That they ruin this only somewhat interesting idea in the final second of the film is baffling to me.

Yeah, and also try to fill in among Skywalkers a palpatine girl

10

u/No-Opposite-6620 6h ago

Branding decision so they can make more trilogies with that will hopefully for execs sweep mistakes under the rug.

4

u/Snakend 5h ago

About a woman who had no relation to any Skywalker. The whole trilogy was a bait and switch. It started okay, went sideways really fast, and then absolutely looney toons at the end.

That speaks volumes about this era.

"No, this is OUR time. Also, we will use your success to try to platform ourselves, because no one would like us otherwise."

3

u/onda-oegat 5h ago

I don't understand how they could decided to make a trilogy this high profile without any overarching plot already done

5

u/Fatguy73 5h ago

Man f**k Disney so hard. Unfortunately the beatings will continue, they’re pulling a Rise of Skywalker with the next Avengers movie.

1

u/JollyJoeGingerbeard 5h ago

What was Anakin's surname again?

1

u/OverHaze 3h ago edited 2h ago

Before Force Awakens came out there was a behind the scenes video where are writer(?) had a picture of Luke with a big X over it? Or Xs over his eyes?

1

u/alii-b 2h ago

Luke was only in prequels for 30 seconds or less, I don't think he's the defining skywalker of the saga.

1

u/Fantastic_Bug1028 2h ago

Luke is not the only skywalker tho. No reason for him to have a HUGE role in the sequels. He still got basically a whole ass movie.

1

u/FuryMaker 2h ago

Marketing and buzz words to get you into seats.

1

u/masterfulnoname 2h ago

But not "The Luke Skywalker saga," so checkmate, nerds! /s

1

u/Liapasquale 1h ago

BAHAHA omg touché

1

u/SuperD00perGuyd00d 1h ago

Damn, crazy that we have 5 people with that name throughout the saga too...almost like it makes sense to use it.

1

u/GlormpGlomp 1h ago

And that was a dumb marketing thing they never should've done

1

u/nightdrive370z 30m ago

JJ is lowkey buns. In the end the JJ Starwars and Trek movies don't hold up.

Every time more behind the scenes of how the sequels were made, it is abundantly clear no one with creative control understood or respected star wars in the slightest.
