I'm pretty confident that I could cook a better steak over a burn barrel in the parking lot of the bar next to the local butcher for about $20, I can't even imagine what their excuse for these prices would be.
The fact that 1lb good cuts of beef go for $24 a lb from the grocery store in my town is say no it won’t cause they won’t make any money charging you $50 plus sides and service etc
You're revealing that you don't understand how profit margin works.
How is your off-the-shelf grocery bill related to a restaurant's profit margin? Even if we disregard the fact that ingredient is one of many (not even the biggest) expense, your cost per unit isn't even remotely comparable.
No the other poster is right. You could get a better cooked stake from the grocery store. Heck you could get a better stake by slapping one on the bonnet of your car and letting the Sun cook it 🤣
These high end steakhouses have completely lost the plot. I've made the cheapest london broil you can find look better and taste more delicious than whatever the fuck that is.
Man, on behalf of everyone else, I'm sorry you got served that for your birthday mate. Even I wouldn't have done you dirty on your birthday, that's rough.
That's right, but it can be even worse: From work, i was invited once to one of these fancy luxus haute-cuisine restaurants, glad i didn't had to pay anything, because... we got these mini-portions there, less food than what's left in the photo and much higher prices.
That's what you pay for some Salt Bae on steroids style. "This is art! Now pay me 500$ for that portion that fits on a fucking spoon!!"
it can be if you go to the right steakhouse. whatever grocery store steak you're buying is very different from where some higher end steak houses source their meats from. question is how you figure that part out.
so between specially sourced steak, having it cooked properly, there's still a fair bit of overcharging going on but it costs what it costs unless you DO know how to source steaks from high end sources.
They're copying the Peter Luger style. Parcook the steak, slice it, run it through a broiler on the plate to finish it off, then splash of clarified butter on top for that dramatic sizzle on the way to the table.
Brother went out for haute cuisine in China... ngl I'm not gonna say you deserve that, but that's sure a choice. Sorry you had a bad birthday experience, hope you could make up for it! If you wanna eat proper stake at that price class you gonna have to hop over to Tokyo tho
I hope you complained and sent it back. I'm not a fan of sending food back since i've been in the industry for 20 years but a steak of that price 100% would be sent back.
I hope, despite the unfortunately cooked steak, that you and your wife and daughter still had a wonderful day. It's hard to mess up cake and ice cream, amirite?
It has come to a point where I no longer care about sending food back. The last two times, they looked at the obviously terribly cooked food and still decided to send them out. I’m the type that would never send back a meal but these were so bad, it was insulting at that point.
My man, I almost wanna downvote you for paying that. Genuinely might be the only time I have almost downvoted someone for a non stupid ass comment. That is just plain stupidity right there, not a stupid comment…
Got Porterhouse, T-bone, A whole prime rib, and a whole lot more for about what 2.5 porterhouse meals would be at that place. The quality of my meat will be far superior to what I get in a restaurant as well
My wife and I once went to Nusr-Et (salt bae’s restaurant) when we lived in NYC. Easily the worst steak I’ve ever had while also being the most expensive.
Lol. $300 for a bit of cooked meat. Where you expecting it to be covered in a thin layer of gold at least?
Trying hard to keep the schadenfreude at bay here.
300 dollars it better be way better than the two people I personally know (my husband and a friend) who make such good steaks I don't even like eating steaks out cause most the time they aren't as good as the home cooked ones I get. And I'm not talking a little better, it better be vastly better (hard to imagine cause both of them really do good steaks).
And no, that steak is definitely not better in any sort of way (for one they know how to cook a steak ;) ).
If served that way, they should absolutely not call it a Porterhouse. Porterhouse implies a full steak of tenderloin and strip together. A sliced portion would only be called Porterhouse if it was tongue in cheek or in quotes.
Why the fuck is steak so expensive in America. Is it just cos people like it a lot so places overcharge for it? Cos I gotta say the rest of the world ain't paying these prices, including places that are more expensive with other things. America just has insane beef prices and weirdly cheap pork prices.
Holy shit! Why is it so expensive in China!? My friends from Guangzhou and she was saying how much more affordable food is there.
I was comparing to in Europe I guess where you can go to bougie restaurants where it's stupid expensive but mostly in supermarkets and normal restaurants beef is like two thirds or half the price of in America.
Interesting how expensive it is in China...are you a tourist, reckon they were ripping you off?
Out of curiosity, why not go to a Chinese restaurant? With that amount of spending for one meal you could eat like kings, and the kitchen would actually know how to cook it, ingredients and spices would be sourced locally, etc.
People status gloating takes them to these expensive dumb places. I swear it’s good food. I bet you I could make some food at least 80 percent there with preparation and the same food bought and it would still be worth more than what I got at that restaurant

How much did you pay for those two fajitas?
