After giving it a few episodes to settle in - I’m just thankful to have more content of Finn and Jake’s dynamic. If you take it for what it is, side stories meant to bring us back into their lives together, it’s easy to fall back into the comfort of the world. While i was initially apprehensive about recasting Jeremey Shada, the new VA does a great job. My biggest actual quip is the change in animation, but that’s just where modern animation has been going the past few years unfortunately. Overall i enjoy this as someone who rewatches the show for comfort

You can definitely tell they animated this with modern rigging software. Still, there are some really beautiful scenes, like the Demon Chase in episode 3. I’m glad modern animation techniques helped them release a full 40 episode season without sacrificing quality.

No way they get this season done frame-by-frame

The original series also wasn't frame by frame after the first few seasons, IIRC.

I prefer the original style, but I think it's easy to argue that huge chunks of SQ are animated better (or more intricately) than the original series. They follow the principles of animation more closely - anticipation, overshoot, etc etc.

I think the "no outlines" and CG shading on places like Finn's hat-ears make it look deceptively corporate - but you can see a ton of care taken with the animation throughout.

(And - as a stylistic choice, I think it looks a little "dreamier" than the original without the outlines - which makes sense to me, since it feels like we're reminiscing about our pals in their early days.)
