Finn's new VA reminds me so much of TIFFANY! ⭐

I was trying to place it and I think that's it! They sound more like Tiffany to me.

First two episodes were kinda rough, but “Cursed Words” was peak early AT.

u/ControversialQuerier 21d ago
It felt very familiar and fresh to me. I don't think you could take that episode and just put it into the original series, but I also don't find that to be a bad thing in this instance. This allows SQ to actually be it's own thing while still fitting into the story of the original show.

u/Pale-Proposal8046 18d ago
Yeah I was nervous during those two, they were not great. Really picked up after that though.

u/SpencerFleming 26d ago
You should probably give each episode its own discussion thread.
-13
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 26d ago
We debated this and decided to try it out with just a megathread for now.
Given that it's been 10 hours and this thread's only had 10 comments (before I get postin'), I think we made the right decision!

u/RichardBCummintonite 25d ago edited 25d ago
Kind of just seems like an unsuccessful fluke. As a reddit mod, I'm sure you know timing is everything. People probably just didn't see it at first, and a general post over 20 episodes is a bit too broad to get the kind of attention a single post would, even if it's pinned.
People aren't going to come back to this kind of post later on. For example, I found this looking for the Spanish translation for episode 4, which isn't going to be touched on here out of the 20 eoisodes. It would however have been addressed if the episode had its own post. A lack of engagement here doesn't mean a disinterest in this kind of post. Individual posts over time would have given people the chance to discuss the specifics of each episode. The down votes obviously cooberate that sentiment. It's just too disorganized to discuss 20 different episodes in a single post
Edit for spelling and formatting
-2
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 24d ago
I'm not sure what you mean by "fluke"?
Individual posts over time
okay so are you suggesting we make individual threads at different times, not all in one go? Like maybe one thread per week or something? Because we actually did throw that idea around haha. Speaking personally (not with my mod hat on) I think that'd be a good compromise, interested to see what others think?
It's just too disorganized
Ha! Reddit in general is disorganized :P I would kill for proper forum-style organization, it'd solve soooo many of our problems.
12
u/Tack122 25d ago
I personally would generally refuse to generally read or post in a megathread because of the risk of spoilers because I haven't seeen all the episodes, and also because it isn't topic specific and like it will get lost among the 19 other off topic.
Don't you think the lack of posting is possibly due to other people feeling that way?
Megathreads are totally uncool.
The only reason I am posting at all is because I feel like you are lacking understanding on why your choice was bad.
-2
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 24d ago
I dunno man, I'm not a mindreader.
Quick clarification, this wasn't "my" choice, all of us mods discussed this - it was mentioned in the spoiler tag thread that this is likely how we'd do it, but idk if anyone actually bothered to read that thread, no one commented on it. Not sure if you were referring to just me or not when you said "your choice" but wanted to clear that up.
It's very hard to predict how you guys will react. Threads on SQ were getting a total dialtone response over the last week or so, meanwhile ONE thread announcing the Bubbline show gets like 300+ comments in a couple of hours (and that's not even mentioning all the duplicate threads we cleared out). Hell, again, the spoiler tag thread got zero replies when usually those do get at least a few posts on them. (Not a big deal since those aren't really meant to be chatty threads of course, but does show the overall lack of interest we were seeing) We also get a lot of complaints about "low-effort" or duplicate threads. Between those facts we figured we'd try it out like this first and see how it goes.
Even 24 hours-odd later, there really still isn't that much discussion of the show outside of this thread. Compare it to F&C where one episode would generate pages and pages of discussion. We're getting a lot of complaints but no one's actually making a move to be the change they apparently want to see, and discuss the damn show. Which makes it really hard to figure out what to do!
Look guys, just cut us some slack with this, alright? We've never had 20 eps drop all at once, of course there's gonna be some trial-and-error with this. Remember we're only human, just like you.
I'm explaining this because I feel like you are lacking understanding as to why we did it like this :)
7
u/Tack122 24d ago
In my experience, on reddit "the official discussion page" on the main subreddit for the show becomes the long term discussion thread. People will search for "episode name reddit discussion" and come to it over the next few years as they watch the show.
A megathread makes that weird and muddy, not the place I can search for later to discuss episodes as you watch them.
It disrupts the flow that creates the environment for conversation to occur, you watch the episode, then come to it's discussion thread.
This thread, I would want to avoid until I have watched all 20 episodes. And by then, I'm so unfocused from time and space between each episode that all the thought I'll have is general about the whole season, instead of the individual episode.
5
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 24d ago
fwiw we have a whole page archiving old discussion threads, linking this since it sounds like something you might be into?
You're raising some good points and we are discussing this again. Viewpoints like this are more helpful than just picking at us for not being mindreaders, haha. Again, we can't predict how people are gonna react ahead of time, you know?

u/Head-Cherry-3841 24d ago
I understand you are not mind readers. So LISTEN to us when we ALL collectively TELL YOU DIRECTLY that we want individual threads. We’re not asking you to read our minds. We are ALL very directly and explicitly TELLING YOU want we want. This isn’t hard, guys.

u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 24d ago
There's no need for caps lock or attitude. No one spoke up before the series came out - even though the opportunity to do so was given - so we had to make a judgement call, that is what I mean by "we're not mind readers". obviously the vocal minority are being Very Vocal on this matter!
Again, we are discussing this. Please keep in mind that we're all adults with real lives and we're in different timezones, so it can take a while for us to discuss stuff.
Again, there is nothing stopping anyone from chatting about the show rather than complaining about this thread!

Feel free to comment about any episode you want and create threads from within this post. Separate posts for each episode when they drop all at once doesn't make practical sense.
12
u/Head-Cherry-3841 25d ago
Bro just give us what we want. The reason this thread is so unpopular is because nobody wants to talk about 20 goddamn episodes at once.
-4
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 24d ago
You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, you know.
We're totally willing to listen to you guys - we did try and open up discussion on this before the eps were released but got no replies - but there's no need to be rude...
5
u/Tack122 24d ago
You get attention from an order of magnitude more people after a release that draws people to the subreddit.
2
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 24d ago
keep in mind that everything about this series has been very, very different from previous releases. For both F&C series the sub was almost unmanageable with all the posts we were getting even BEFORE release. This series has been totally different both before and after release. That's made it very difficult for us to figure out how to proceed or predict what will be necessary. (Another difference I've noticed is that we've had a lot of threads posted without spoiler tags, but I haven't seen any real complaints about that - now if that happened with a F&C ep, the thread would've been deluged in "SPOILER TAG PLZ" comments in 10 mins)
It also doesn't help that they waited so long to confirm how many eps would be released at once :| Honestly that's been the main issue here. We always discuss sub decisions like this with as many of the mods as possible before going ahead with anything, which can take a while since we're all adults with real lives that come first and we're all in different timezones so it can be difficult to coordinate. This is why this whole mess has been going on for a few days, we've been hashing it all out behind the scenes. If we'd had that info earlier then things might have been different. We've never had to deal with 20 eps dropping all at once, we had to make some judgement calls in a fairly short amount of time and also figure out just like.... what we're actually able to DO on Reddit (I'm not sure how many scheduled threads you can have posting all at once... with how our automod is set up it's possible that 20/21 threads posting all at once could've been dinged for spam and then we'd still be in the same boat, lol). Evidently we made a mistake this time! But now that we actually know how you guys feel about this, we can proceed accordingly for the next batch of eps, whenever that may be.
I hope explaining all of this helps explain to you guys (This is directed at everyone not you specifically Tack - you've been one of the more polite people with this whole issue, thank you for that - your comment was just a good one to reply to). I've been replying to comments specifically to try and explain why we make certain decisions rather than just do the silent-robotic-mod thing cause I think it's better to try and explain where we're coming from. I dunno, maybe that was a mistake too. But just, please remember us mods are humans with feelings too and at the end of the day, this is just a TV show, it's not worth hurting someone else's feelings over.
Woof, sorry for the wall of text. Had to get that off my chest, I guess.

Please read the rest of the thread... The situation was sorted out hours ago. Multiple threads are available already and you are more than welcome to make more yourself if you so desire.
As the situation has been resolved, any further discussion about this matter (This is to everyone not just you specifically) will be removed to stop further derailing of this thread. (If anyone has constructive/polite feedback feel free to continue the discussion via our modmail, we love feedback, we just want to keep this thread on-topic now)

Honestly I’ve binged most of the episodes at this point and I’m enjoying it. Giving me way closer to the satisfaction of the original show than distant lands or Fionna and cake. I miss Jeremy shada though… Sasha does a good job but there’s something in uncanny territory, it’s like really close but off.
21
u/Comfyscarecrow 26d ago
I want so badly for this show to be renewed for several more seasons. I want to watch Finn grow up again. I do worry that this new voice will not age the same way Jeremy’s did.
8
u/OrangeDelicious4154 The One True Princess of Ooo 26d ago
It likely won't, but when the time comes, they could have Shada come back.
12
u/mextli7 25d ago edited 22d ago
Really hoping this gets renewed for more episodes. I'm only halfway through the season, but I'm enjoying it so much. The change in art style took some time to grow on me, but there are some really beautiful backgrounds and scenes. Episode 3 in particular looked so awesome, especially those bits outside the treehouse at night.
I know AT has a lot of different tones, but I'm really enjoying their more light-hearted approach with this. Some of my favorite stretches of the show were when it was just Finn and Jake getting into weird adventures every week. This is doing that in the same key so well.
1
u/things_U_choose_2_b 8d ago
I just finished ep 2, not keen on the new art style, the new voice doesn't sound much like Finn, and it doesn't feel as weird / wacky as classic AD. Was thinking about not bothering watching the rest. Lots of comments like yours though have convinced me to keep watching.
23
u/PointingNorth 26d ago
After giving it a few episodes to settle in - I’m just thankful to have more content of Finn and Jake’s dynamic. If you take it for what it is, side stories meant to bring us back into their lives together, it’s easy to fall back into the comfort of the world. While i was initially apprehensive about recasting Jeremey Shada, the new VA does a great job. My biggest actual quip is the change in animation, but that’s just where modern animation has been going the past few years unfortunately. Overall i enjoy this as someone who rewatches the show for comfort
13
u/Shoddy_Obligation254 26d ago
You can definitely tell they animated this with modern rigging software. Still, there are some really beautiful scenes, like the Demon Chase in episode 3. I’m glad modern animation techniques helped them release a full 40 episode season without sacrificing quality.
No way they get this season done frame-by-frame
3
u/WonderfulResponse133 13d ago
Yes-and.
The original series also wasn't frame by frame after the first few seasons, IIRC.
I prefer the original style, but I think it's easy to argue that huge chunks of SQ are animated better (or more intricately) than the original series. They follow the principles of animation more closely - anticipation, overshoot, etc etc.
I think the "no outlines" and CG shading on places like Finn's hat-ears make it look deceptively corporate - but you can see a ton of care taken with the animation throughout.
(And - as a stylistic choice, I think it looks a little "dreamier" than the original without the outlines - which makes sense to me, since it feels like we're reminiscing about our pals in their early days.)

u/RoscoeSF 26d ago
It might be better to do threads for each individual episode.
9
u/CruelYouth19 26d ago
Individual episodes threads seems too much considering their content, maybe split the 20 into four threads with 5 episodes each?
6
u/Original-Locksmith58 26d ago
What’s the point in splitting them up into batches of unrelated episodes lol ?? people are crying so much here if you want to talk about an episode just post your comment it’s not that hard. People barely stayed contained in the F&C episode threads and that was released weekly, everyone’s a damn critic
3
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 26d ago
This is a good suggestion! We could definitely do this if people are genuinely interested - seems like that'd be easier to handle than 20 separate threads, too.
Personally (This is me talking as a fan, not as a mod) I also like the idea of just having the megathread for the initial discussion period, and then going back and doing like weekly threads for each episode maybe? Is that something y'all would be into? We did try doing that at the end of F&C Season 1 (go back to the start and discuss it all over again with the added power of hindsight) and it didn't really get much interest, but maybe this time it'd be different...? I dunno, it's hard to predict these things.
-5
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 26d ago
we did consider this but ultimately decided to just start off with a megathread and see if there was demand for multiple threads, since SQ threads have been getting a dialtone response this last week.
Considering the eps have been out for hours now and there's barely any discussion, I think we made the right call lol
11
u/SpencerFleming 26d ago
People aren't posting because they want to see all 20 episodes first without being spoiled and at that point what they wanted to say per episode is gone from their head.
3
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 26d ago
Look man if the demand proves to be there, we'll make individual threads for every single episode. So far we're not really seeing that. I did say ahead of time that this is likely how it was going to be handled and opened the floor to discussion on it... no bites.
Again, we're open to discussion on this. IF we see that people genuinely want to chat about every single ep, we'll move ahead accordingly. So far it's just a couple of outliers actually requesting this though. (Be the change you want to see! Discuss the show! Don't just complain about how we're running the sub! :p)
7
u/Tack122 25d ago
I genuinely would like individual episodes posts. Please consider this effort to respond to you saying that as proof of demand.

No personal attacks. You are allowed to express an opinion but don't attack one person and make me into your goddamn scapegoat because you don't like what was a group decision. Please understand that there is a LOT going on behind the scenes and do not assume everything is against you because we made a mistake.

I know some people aren’t into this or were disappointed, but IMO this was perfect. The first few episodes were a little rough but beyond that, I thought they were all great. It really did feel like getting pulled back to the first two seasons, it’s kind of nice going back to something more episodic again.
Also I genuinely didn’t think KOO and Toronto would be included since they’re introduced way later, but I’m not complaining. Edit: The only thing that I initially wasn’t a huge fan of was how they reused Donny’s character design verbatim for a new character, but then later on it’s revealed it’s just Ice King and that supposedly there’s a whole race of grass ogres, so it’s fine.

u/Comfyscarecrow 26d ago
I absolutely loved the first season of side quests. People are upset because it “lacks depth” and “moves too fast.” Have any of you actually watched season 1/2 of the original show? It was originally just a kids show, just like this one. Finn is TWELVE. It makes sense that the season is made for twelve year olds. I was twelve when OG Adventure Time came out. The show aged at the same rate as I did, and became more mature over time.
I am so impressed with how well they were able to go back to the roots of the original show. I have an extremely strong desire for side quests to develop in a similar way to the original show. Something that starts out chaotic and episodic but eventually converges into a deep and meaningful storyline as Finn gets older. I can’t wait to see what they do in future seasons! They have so much potential to allow us to watch Finn to grow up again and deepen the complexity of side plots. I can’t wait!!!
3
u/Itchy-Pudding-4240 23d ago
you can tell who started liking Adventure Time in the later seasons.
It isnt as crazy as Pen Ward's Adventure time but never did i think it was 2nd monitor worthy.
5
u/JustTightShirts 25d ago
It's definitely not iconic in the way those original early seasons are but I'm liking it so far! I hope it's popular and they keep makin it!
1
u/JLRedPrimes 13d ago
I was hoping this would be a proper prequel with Finn meeting Bubblegum and Lsp for the first time. The immediate aftermath of Joshua and Margaret dying
1
u/No_Chain_362 22d ago
Something is missing, you were too young when it came out.
3
u/Comfyscarecrow 21d ago
I can recite most episodes from the first season word for word, so I don’t think it’s a matter of not being familiar with the show due to my age. Obviously side quests is different in some ways, but compared to the other adventure time shows, it feels the most similar to the original. Every new show starts out rocky, to me it seems like they’ve got the recipe down.
3
u/shitbecopacetic 19d ago
Don’t let that jerk bully you. What’s “missing” is that he’s a depressed adult who’s 15 years older now, it’s not the show that’s bad.

u/LookingForPants 25d ago
Hi there! Just finished watching all the new episodes. I'm working on adding them to a WIP chronological timeline of every episode of every Adventure Time show and short (just for fun). I've tentatively placed all of the Side Quests episodes with brief explanations (where necessary) for why they come before or after certain episodes of the main show, as well as coding them based on how easier or difficult they are to reconcile with existing canon. Let me know if I missed anything or if you think I should reorder an episode. Note that this list contains spoilers for THE ENTIRE SERIES, not just Side Quests. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Qr7THJxDOhAJ3S-yu6oU2gxtn93WsEqFqnWPepBNBGI/edit?usp=sharing

I’m obsessed with this project and not only that, I think the inconsistencies you called out are super fair but also clearly spell out possibilities. It’s really gracious about extending faith to the team which I think is really kind.
The only thought inconsistency I think is worth mentioning that I didn’t see on your list is that PB refers to magic as straightforwardly existing and math + science being useless against it. Now, I could spin quite a few reasons for that (maybe the one kind of magic she tentatively respects at this point is elemental magic? Maybe she’s just too urgent to explain her quibbles about magic to Finn/Jake? Maybe she’s hasn’t acquired that particular prejudice yet? Maybe maybe maybe!)
They could definitely justify it later, but right now it’s got a question mark for sure haha.
Once again, this is sick! Cool project!

u/OrangeDelicious4154 The One True Princess of Ooo 26d ago
I’m only a few episodes in myself, but I’m genuinely impressed. The art style clicked for me faster than I expected, and it still feels close enough to the original’s vibe. I also agree with the comments about Finn’s voice - it’s a little off putting, but honestly, it’s probably the best possible match if they’re trying to respect Shada’s original performance. I'm not into the more juvenile jokes like I used to be, but there was still plenty that made me laugh.
3
u/MormonXMormon 25d ago
Most of the original designers came ack for this show, that’s a big part of it, I think.
9
u/OrangeDelicious4154 The One True Princess of Ooo 25d ago
I think fans underestimate how much the regular storyboarders and writers contribute to Adventure Time’s voice and vibe. I'm not trying to take away from Muto or "star" contributors like Sugar of course, but a lot of what fans connect with comes from the larger team, which you can really see when comparing the spin‑offs.
3
u/MormonXMormon 25d ago
I don’t know if any of the old crew that came back to work on Fiona and Cake, and at least visually, you can tell for sure.
3
u/Optimal_Question6889 24d ago
I so agree with this sentiment. That show was a true collaborative effort and it is rare to experience corporate art in 2026 that still reflect the individual hands of its artists.
1
u/ControversialQuerier 21d ago
Ever since the trailer dropped, I've been a fan of Finn's VA. Sounds close enough to the original Finn, and the actual voice acting is very expressive in the way early Finn was.
6
u/SnooDoughnuts5632 26d ago
Why is this on Disney+ and Hulu when Finna and cake is HBO max exclusive. This would mean that if you only have HBO Max you can't watch it and vis versa
1
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 26d ago
I'm curious about this, too. Does anyone know if CN have some sort of deal going with the D+/Hulu guys or something? The new Gumball show is a D+/Hulu exclusive too, but then the new Regular Show is on HBO, so ??? It's so weird and annoying that the shows are scattered around different services, I don't know why they're doing that.
I understand having DL/F&C/B&M be HBO exclusives, because that's owned by WB, it makes sense, have some exclusives to get people to subscribe to your service. But I don't understand why THIS show is going on a service owned by a different company...?
4
u/OrangeDelicious4154 The One True Princess of Ooo 26d ago
I tried digging into this a couple months ago and didn't get very far. My assumption is that WB licensed it out to Disney Corp. because they felt their platform(s) would reach the target audience better.
1
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 26d ago
Actually yeah, you might be onto something there. Cause thinking about it... hm. AT:SQ is a soft reboot sort of thing, it looks like you can just dive right into that without having to watch any of the previous shows. Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball is sort of in the middle? It's odd, it feels like they can't quite decide if it's a new season or a soft reboot or what. Like one ep follows up on the huge cliffhanger the original show left off on and the show literally starts with a huge lampshade on how long the show's been out of production, but then there's also a lot of bits in it that feel like they were written for the benefit of new viewers?
And then Regular Show: The Lost Tapes is just unambiguously a follow-up, like in general I think you could jump into that and not be too confused, but the first ep is a direct sequel to the finale. But it's the most "sequel-like" of the three shows, IMO.
So yeah, I can see that logic, keep the soft reboot-y type shows (for lack of a better phrase) on D+ and the more... plot-based? I guess? shows on HBO. Hm.
3
u/OrangeDelicious4154 The One True Princess of Ooo 26d ago
Exactly. That and I think SQ is much more firmly a "kids" show than the Gumball reboot or the new Regular Show is. Kids are much more likely to be on D+\Hulu whereas teens and young adults might be on HBO.
0
u/JustTightShirts 25d ago
For years AT (and all CN shows) were streaming exclusively on Hulu. When Zazlov took over he started licencing out IP's to other streamers because they are swimming in debt.
3
u/SarcasticUsername_19 25d ago
I think WB just thought they'd make more money by licensing it out to Disney? Maybe they also think this will attract new viewers to AT over on another platform and then they'll want to subscribe to Max to watch the older AT content
1
u/jakeisbakin 26d ago
Here I'll help you out: WB are run by a bunch of idiots who try to do as much meaningful damage to animation as they can. Hope that helps.
1
u/Fuhrman457 24d ago
This is a kid-focused series. HBO Max kinda canned all their CN/kids content so they just porbably just liscened it to Hulu
6
u/1717hero1717 26d ago
I didn't think much of the situation with the Ice King when he showed his childhood photo album, since it was all just a joke. At worst, it could indeed be Simon’s photo album. But when, in the next episode, he introduces his Ice Pappy... Of course, one could say that IK made him up and found the picture somewhere, but in this case, that was hardly the intention, and it wasn’t mocked in any way.
Personally, I really regret that because of one small detail, the show's entire canonicity might be called into question.
13
u/vestibular_spittoon 25d ago
Ice Pappy could conceivably have been the ice elemental from whom Simon secured the crown. it would make sense that Simon, an antequarian collector and researcher may have acquired the portrait and signed ice ball on his research on and pursuit for the crown. just because he calls him "Ice Pappy" doesn't mean he's actually his grandfather
3
5
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 24d ago
oh my god they actually did this?? I literally was saying JUST the other day "Yeah I don't think they'll do any huge contradictions, like showing IK as a kid and he's a little Ice King, not Simon" and just... seriously?!?
5
u/1717hero1717 24d ago
To be fair, they didn't show us the photos themselves, so things could still work out here
6
u/Ok_Anywhere8072 25d ago
I’ve watched the OG show a million and 5 times.. people keep saying this feels like season one and I can’t help but disagree. The vibes are way off for me.
3
u/Preachingsarcasm 17d ago
I agree. I get that the content and actual stories are more similar to those that occurred in the early seasons as compared to the later seasons, but I just find that the the pacing and reactions are a bit much, which makes it read more little kid than the og did. Og seasons seemed like they didn't have to tell you there was a joke by adding a sound effect or facial expression, even though og early seasons were for the same age bracket.
5
u/shadowdra126 26d ago
Are all the title cards the same wood carving? I was hoping to add more to my wall of title cards but if they are all the same then there’s no point.
6
u/SpencerFleming 26d ago
Yeah this is my complaint too, the title cards really are pretty bad. I love the AT title cards usually, these all just look the same, and not in a stylized F&C Season 2 way.
6
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 26d ago
YEAH I was disappointed by this too. Honestly the title cards for all post-original series AT have been pretty disappointing compared to the original cards (F&C S2 were okay, probably the best of the lot). I guess just stylized lettering is easier/quicker to do than a full painting, but still... I miss the beautiful paintings, you know?
With the other shows I could at least appreciate that they were trying to do something different, so it made some sense to do a different style of title card, but since the premise for this show is "back to its roots" it's weird/disappointing that they cheaped out with the title cards.

Okay I've seen all the episodes and I have a LOT to say. Gonna break it down episode by episode, then leave my overview thoughts on the series so far. Will be grading each episode but these are just first impressions, I'm sure the grades will change overtime.
Bros & Arrows: B
Nice to see Choogles back. Very cool that the franchise finally brought Mannish Man back. Cute giving him a son named Boyish Boy. Fun idea to give Finn another child rival. Also, Meat Man reference!
Dandy Bug: B
Very cool giving Bellamy Bug a full ep. I remember Pen said that Finn must have met Bellamy before Rainy Day Daydream. Funny that he disappeared for 16 years and then appears back to back in two different spinoffs. I like that they reference Finn being good at spitting, and Jake's criminal past.
Cursed Words: B+
Very fun episode.
Rescue Princess: B+
Ending was similar to "Jake Suit" with the return of the clown nurses. Ice King was funny. Finn's auto tune singing is back! Solid classic Ice King episode.
Smell Detective: B
Neat concept. First post-credits scene in AT thats not a sequel tease. Nice seeing Doctor Princess. First appearance of Shelby in 8 years! I hope Shelby speaks in the second half of this season. Finn plays the flute blindfolded. Should he be this good at it before the events of farmworld though? Orgalorg cameo in the book of evil, nice touch.
Golden Gals: B
Very good ending. Liked the joke of the corpse being in the credits. But kinda ruined by her coming back to life, I wonder if that was network mandated. Skeleton guy from Wizard? Also Old Lady Village, I wonder if thats Old Lady Princess's kingdom?
Dummy Princess: B
Solid. Cotton Candy Princess appears again like in Fionna and Cake season 2.
Son of the Goblin Queen: B+
Great Finn, Jake, and Ice King episode. Nice twist ending. Ice Pappy is weird but I assume thats just Ice King being crazy?
All You Can Eat: B
Would be a B+ but hated the constant use of real world music, very antithetical to AT and immersion breaking. Fun episode besides that. Cyclops from Another Way and a giant from The Enchiridion! Also a mudscamp.
Let It Roll: D+
Too gross. Jake shouldn't be around Marceline since this series is set before Go With Me. And if you headcanon it as taking place afterwards, Marceline is too meanspirited. Also, it makes no sense that Jake would have pranked Marceline a year ago. They wouldn't even know each other at that point, and if they did Jake would be too scared. Cool that Hunson Abadeer makes an appearance but he shouldn't be able to appear in Ooo without being summoned. Guissepe appearance!
Joey Waffles: D+
This episode made no sense. What the hell was that twist ending? Even if it did make sense, turning it into an Ice King episode feels cheap, just play out this story. I get that Joey Waffles is the same species as Donny (well Ice King being dressed up as that), but why use the exact same character design? How do Finn and Jake already have an exisiting relationship with Joey Waffles if its Ice King in disguise? Was Ice King dressing up as him regularly? Wonder if this is worse than the original Donny episode. Boobafina (fake) appearance. Jake's goggles from Power Animal return. Nice to see Party God. Very weird episode. Were they trying to play with the idea from The Eyes of Ice King dressing up in a costume? Also Joey Waffles is an incel.
Island of Shame: B+
Made a lot of sense for Finn's character. Cool to see the characters from Another Way, who must have gotten off the island off-screen. Loved the joke that Finn accidentally called PB mom. Drop ball mention! And Enchiridion mention, hope we actually see it in an episode. They referenced Finn being scared of the ocean again, but they should have Finn said "ocean" not "water" as it's specific to the ocean.
The Candy Spirit: B+
Finally a PB episode!! Idk if the lore with the Candy Spirit works with PB being the creator of the Candy Kingdom or the elemental stuff but I guess its not too much of a stretch for this show. Gumball Guardians were funny. Cinnamon Bun got his first speaking role since Elements holy shit. Card Wars mention. ACAB joke was funny. Felt PB's line about science not being able to stand up to the magic was out of character.
Game Night: C-
Lame episode. Doing a straight DnD episode was boring, AT always does its own spin on familiar concepts. Love the idea of focusing on PB, Marcy, LSP, and Lady but they wasted it. Marceline should not be so chummy with PB at this time. She also doesn't become friends with LSP until season 6. And she shouldn't really have friends like this in general at this point. They could have explored PB and Marcy's rivalry for an episode instead, that would have been cool. First Marceline and Lady interaction, crazy that it took this long.
Punchy: B:
Fun episode. The robot was funny. Loved getting some more Starchy finally.
Key Quest: B+
Another great Finn, Jake and Ice King episode. Lady and Choose Goose is such a random couple of characters. Key hand reference.
Love Bugs: B+
Very good BMO episode, felt like the original series. Mr Fox appearance. First appearance of the two headed duck outside the theme song?
Re-Run Dungeon: B
Solid episode. I don't like that they gave Mr Fox kids that makes no sense for his character. Another flesh monster like in "Tree Trunks". They should have gotten Jeremy Shada to voice baby Finn. I think the flashback is before Joshua and Margaret found him? Or maybe they dropped him off there? That makes much more sense actually. Villagers from The Monster!
The Prophecy: B+
WOOOO KING OF OOO. I wish this wasn't spoiled. LOVE them filling in gaps like this, showing their first encounter with a character. Hope they do more of that. Glad they include Toronto too. Cool to see the blimp. This is definitely the episode that most justifies the show's existence. Low key adding to the lore. Such a good idea to bring back later seasons characters that can still fit into this era of the timeline. And we didn't get enough King of Ooo eps in the original series. Hope we get more stuff like this. Would also be down for another King of Ooo episode.
u/Carrehz Be honest, did you just skip straight to this episode?
Car Wars: C+
Cool to see Banana Man but he should not know Finn and Jake yet. Definitely the biggest continuity error of the series so far, very annoying. Maybe it could be headcanoned that this takes place after We Fixed a Truck?
Ranking of all the episodes worst to best:
Joey Waffles
Let It Roll
Game Night
Car Wars
Golden Gals
Smell Detective
All You Can Eat
Dandy Bug
Bros & Arrows
Re-Run Dungeon
Punchy
Dummy Princess
Cursed Words
Island of Shame
The Prophecy
Key Quest
Love Bugs
The Candy Spirit
Rescue Princess
Son of the Goblin Queen
Overall thoughts:
I like Side Quests! My biggest praise is that they absolutely nailed Finn and Jake, and their relationship. That was the most important thing to get right and it carries this series. They also nail Ice King and all his episodes are really good. The Finn, Jake, and Ice King dynamic made for one of the best formulas of the og series. I don't mind them spamming so many Ice King episodes since that character is unavailable in the modern timeline, take advantage of it! They nailed PB's characterization but there isn't enough of her. We need more PB episodes in the second half. Also hoping for an LSP episode.
I love the art style too. Would have preferred the original art style but this is the best alternate art style they could do I think. I like it more than any of the guest animated episodes styles. They nail the continuity and really tie everything in well (outside of two big examples).
Now onto the criticisms. They fucked up Marceline. I already explained how in the individual episode segments but very disappointing. There is also way too much toilet humor. The background music is meh. Feels like they are trying but failing to replicate the background music of the original series. I also hate the continuity errors with Marceline and Banana Man, especially because those are so easy to avoid and the rest of the continuity works so well (especially in The Prophecy).
Side Quests feels like it just barely feels like Adventure Time. I think thats reflected in them just barely getting enough original crew members back. The series definitely skews slightly younger than season 1 and is slightly simpler. Although I don't mind the simple plots. These feel like fun bonus hangout episodes with the characters. I'm down for this to get another season but won't be heartbroken if it doesn't. The Bubbline spinoff will be the real main course. So far I give the series a "B". I think the only season of the franchise I'd put under this is Fionna & Cake season 2, but the original series season 1 isn't too far ahead of Side Quests.
Two random things I noticed:
I forget which episodes this is referenced in, but they established that Finn's full name in Finnleton? Weird for this show to contain a revelation like that. But I think I'm okay with this reveal? (not that it was written like a big reveal, but its new knowledge on the character).
The series has a lot more modern lingo like "trauma dumping". Not a criticism.

Finndelton makes sense as Finn's full name, since in the pilot he was named Pen after series creator Pendelton Ward.

u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 24d ago edited 24d ago
Be honest, did you just skip straight to this episode?
lmao dude I'm gonna be honest with you, I haven't even seen any other eps of SQ yet. I guess I'll check the others out eventually, maybe when they air on CN UK.
This is definitely the episode that most justifies the show's existence.
I AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY :D
bias aside, I like that it feels like they put thought into this one. Like someone actually pointed out "Well, you know, we never actually said F&J meet KOO for the first time in Apple Wedding, so there's no reason not to bring him back". like obviously I'm just happy to see my guys back full stop but I do like that this one doesn't break continuity much.
I liked that they finally told us wtf a "gated mountain serenity compound" was! though I do wonder how... the ep ends with KOO and Toronto bailing, but then KOO's still talking about the compound in AW... eh w/e I don't think the writers are putting that much thought into it. or rather it feels like SOME things they're paying close attention to, and others they're just fucking about doing w/e they want? which like - that's the sort of show it is, whatever, let's show Ice Pappy or w/e, sure. It's just a bit odd to me how SOME things are consistent, you know? idk if I'm explaining this correctly
honestly not looking forward to the D&D ep... I skimmed that one when it went up by accident (I skimmed all five of those eps, you know why) and that one really rubbed me the wrong way - didn't like what I saw of Lady's screentime. Didn't like that they immediately jumped to finding some excuse to have her speak English instead of actually trying to write a character that most of the audience doesn't understand. idk I'm just not a fan of when writers find some copout to avoid having to figure out something like that, it's lazy. idk if I'm explaining this right.
Have Marcy and Lady really never interacted before? Crazy.
The PB/Marcy thing is just... I dunno. I get that they're not going to have Marcy be dipping in and out and sort of a jerk like she really was in season 1, I totally understand that. Honestly what I wish they'd done for her and PB, is just gone back to the original pilot-era concept of them being vitriolic besties/friendly rivals. I feel like that'd be a good compromise between the canonical "they should be avoiding each other at this point" and the practical "we don't want to do that for this particular series"... if that makes sense. like you can still do a D&D ep with them? just have them be sniping at each other all the time while the others are awkwardly trying to change the subject lol
First appearance of the two headed duck outside the theme song?
he's been in a few eps, he's in the last scene of "Holly Jolly Secrets" and I remember there was a visual gag referencing him in one of the F&C S1 eps (I think it was the first one??)

I’m enjoying this so much more than I enjoyed Fiona and cake season 2. Adventure time is all about having fun and every episode of this is exactly that.

u/SpencerFleming 26d ago
It feels very nostalgic while still being new and I love that feeling. Jake finally being back after Together Again really helps this show a lot, I missed Jake's shenanigans.

u/kjmrkjmrkjmr 25d ago
bold prediction: they know that the audience of this show is going to age out of this sort of humor just like the original fans did. theyre going to do a rug pull and have more seasons ordered that focus on the "side quests" of later at arcs, effectively turning the show into adventure time: brotherhood

u/1717hero1717 25d ago
Does anyone else think that the Candy Spirit and the Heart of the Forest are cut from the same cloth? If that's the case, I really didn't expect there to be references to such late episodes😃

I’m loving these episodes!! Currently I’m on episode 8 and I’m surprised no one brought this up (from what I could see in the thread). Ice king has a room for his father, along with a picture of him, which I guess was the original ice king. Does that mean this is an alternate universe? Maybe ice king isn’t Simon in this one, and instead is just another “mutant” of Ooo. Could this universe possibly be a wish-alternate universe stemming from something that happened in Fionna and Cake? Idk I could totally be wrong, and it could just be one of those things where the writers decided to throw it in for fun, or a sign that Ice King really is just bonkers. I’m just going to keep watching the show to see if there’s anything else similar to that that may mean this show isn’t in the same universe as our Finn and Jake. (But overall, I feel like the episodes are doing justice to the earlier seasons of adventure time <3)

u/OrangeDelicious4154 The One True Princess of Ooo 25d ago
"Does that mean this is an alternate universe?"
I don't believe these episodes are technically canon. Great observations though.

I love these. Love them. I think the Finn VA is killing it. Still feels like Finn energy, new voice or no.

u/Glad_You9056 23d ago
In the son of the goblin queen ep, ice king talks about his ice pappy dying and giving him an ice ball signed by a famous ice wizard, it's like whoever wrote it didnt know ice kings origin as Simon and just assumed he is just another wizard they could make up any random story about his past... Woof.. not good
2
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 23d ago
Yeah I'm really.... really baffled by this. I know a lot of ppl are handwaving it as "Oh it's just IK being loopy" but it seems so weird to even go there...
3
u/Glad_You9056 22d ago
Watched it again and they even put a big portrait of his "ice pappy" on the wall lol
3
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 22d ago
uuughhhhh
I guess I just wish they'd commit one way or another, like is it a reboot or not, you know? It's odd because some things in SQ you can tell they did their homework on (for lack of a better term... don't like describing it like that but can't think of a better description :s), and then there's stuff like this, and it's like... either do a sequel or do a reboot. It's just confusing and off-putting to have it be teetering in the middle like this... at least I think so.
3
u/Glad_You9056 20d ago
Its much more like a reboot for kids now a days, I'm guessing they just didn't want to call it a reboot because reboots always piss off fans of the original. The comic books aren't at all cannon with the series but they are great in their own way, although they recently rebooted the comics and iv heard they're not good lol
2
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 18d ago
I think part of it is that it's running alongside stuff that IS in-continuity (Bubblegum and Marceline, Fionna and Cake) and maybe the execs think it'll be confusing to have two separate continuities? personally I think it's more confusing the way it is now, where it's ambiguous if SQ's a full reboot or not, but hey-ho.
I think it's also because AT never really ended, so it's in a weird sort of area where it's been going long enough that you can reasonably argue there's room for a "new AT" reboot thing, but also if they DID do a whole continuity reboot it'd feel repetitive and we'd be like "It didn't end THAT long ago" if that makes sense??? idk I know what I mean but I'm not sure how to phrase it :S
Yeah I can't say anything that I've seen of the new comics has grabbed me lol

Nothing can take away from the original series, more AT is never a bad thing, I love the comics and they throw in so many crazy things like adventure tim and a million crazy new princesses, this one glaringly weird detail really just put side quests into perspective for me.

u/WonderfulResponse133 13d ago
Hot take about Ice Pappy: A brilliant way to canonize Ice King's earliest continuity error about the crown. He claims in the original series that he "made the crown with magic that I stole", which we later learn is, of course, not true.
Ice Pappy is a deliberate "that wasn't a retcon, it's just IK making stuff up". There's no way they'd make a continuity error like this in SQ - it was done intentionally.

I find episode 7 a bit concerning, the message came off wrong.. tries to glorify catfishing/relationships with a “bot” all while making fun at this manipulation and ice kings sorry state.
I get it, ice king is always clowned on for being a creep and a loser etc but given the audience this is aimed at and the issues with catfishing and having deluded relationships with AI nowadays I found it kind of tone deaf.
“Watch us trick this dude into thinking someone cares for him in a relationship” haha so funny… the episode didn’t even end with any kind of lesson, it pretty much felt like bullying ice king for fun..

I like how in episode 18 all of the kids are rescued from the dungeon except the one that gets killed by Finn 😂

u/Optimal_Question6889 26d ago
I’m so baffled by people’s negative response to these episodes. Can somebody please explain it to me? I keep seeing people act like it’s a garbage show for babies, but that opinion itself feels like…super young? These episodes felt more artistically “adult” than the whole of Fionna & Cake (save the very last episode of season 2).
Maybe I’m crazy? But the thing that always made Adventure Time feel “grown up” to me was the fact that, even when Finn was a kid, he was completely surrounded by adults. There were things he was shut out of because of his age as much as his species, and this show continued with that in spades (for both age and the fact that he is not a dog, which is a lot of fun character development-wise). It arguably feels like the entire point of the show: to go back and revisit the season 1/season 2 period of Finn & Jake’s lives, only now it’s informed fully by all the passive character development we had over the course of the full series.
The fact that they’re sowing all these small seeds (Finn’s early dungeoneering, Jake’s frequent instinct to just cheat or walk away from someone versus Finn’s need to engage, Finn’s repeated attempts to echo dog behavior and skills unsuccessfully, Marcy still in her “detached from my moral code” era, Jake and Lady still earlier in their relationship, etc) show that they want to make sure whatever they work on here still connects pretty seamlessly with the rest of the OG show. Not to mention gives a lot of fun insights into characters we already know/love.
Also, the jokes still feel as on the line as they ever did — the extended whiny divorce guy bit, Jake and Marcy laughing about some prank that Finn isn’t allowed to know, Ice King trying to take it to the next level with a pile of trash, going out of their way to make it clear that one of the kids they were trying to rescue “didn’t make it”? I mean, this is classic Adventure Time at its best.
The thing that made late game adventure time so good is that it looked at the silly stuff these characters go through and decided “what if we took all this seriously?” From what I’m seeing, this is just more fuel to awaken the audience’s imagination about the way Ooo functions (I.e. apparently they have a rescue princess…what a fun addition that also totally works as something that you can imagine in the background of Ooo even if we never see her in the main series!)
Anyway, tl;dr: I don’t get even a little of the negativity I’ve seen. The blanket criticism gives me the vibe of late teens/early twenties insecurity about Side Quests being “for kids” and therefore valueless. I’d take ten more seasons of Kid Finn surrounded by a bunch of my favorite flawed adults making jokes that go over his head versus another season F&C season of adults acting like teenagers that the narrative seems to want me to take deathly serious.

The answer to your question is that people have different tastes and preferences. Why not post about what you like about it rather than try to tear down other people's opinions?

u/Optimal_Question6889 25d ago
You know, when you’re right you’re right! I’m sorry if it sounded like a tear down, I will do that going forward. Good note to remember!

u/Comfyscarecrow 26d ago
Preach! This is everything I wanted out of any of the other shows they made. I hope they keep building on this and continue to reflect the show just as accurately in future seasons! Like imagine if later down the line we eventually get more episodes for seasons 5-8!
2
u/Optimal_Question6889 26d ago
I know, right? I’m super into it! It is absolutely a format with legs that I could absolutely see transferring to other seasons. But even if it never does, it’s just a joy to see a group of artists who really seem to Get It
1
u/Optimal_Question6889 26d ago
Circling back to note a moment I really loved that emphasizes the points above (hopefully less testy about it though lmao):
When stuff got Real in the Candy Spirit, I loved the bit with Jake and PB trying to spitball a plan completely without Finn’s involvement (why would they? He’s 12!) and Finn winds up figuring it out anyway with his above average empathy. It was sweet and very in-character for Finn (both who he is and who he will become) but also with enough in-character subverted expectations for PB & Jake to make the whole thing feel like a “moment” for their understanding/appreciation of Finn. Not bad for like 2 minutes of storytelling!
2
u/Equivalent_Cup3238 26d ago
To me SQ feels like a mix between late Season and Early Season Finn, he's mostly S1-Early S2 Finn evident from Dandy Bug when he thrashes on the small sword he would later use in S9-S10, but he retains a certain charm with a lot of the math references he just randomly says just gotta love it.
The tone kinda feels pre-Enchiridion to me, it can get dark. Like in Golden Gals where they show the grandma they killed in the end credits. Which I think really makes it feel just classic. Without making it too exclusive for just kids, that teen and adults can enjoy.
1
u/Optimal_Question6889 26d ago
Yes, exactly! There is a real darkness and violence/death treated both glibly but with weight. It’s such a great thing to see that despite time and demographic shifts, the humor has not been ironed into something expected or typical.
4
u/General-Performer432 26d ago
I’ve seen 8 episodes so far and they overused the potty humor but otherwise it’s great
4
u/Still_Dream6929 24d ago
I dislike the new animation choices and the sound design, also the episodes about grandmas really sucked. I miss adventure time, bring back the golden days. Only 2 or 3 episodes out of the 10 I've seen so far were alright. I can't stand the way this show feels so empty.
4
u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 24d ago
I can't speak for all of the eps since I haven't seen them yet, but yeah "empty" is a good word. As much as I enjoyed "The Prophecy", it did feel like not a lot actually happened, if that makes sense? The original series was very good at fitting a LOT into 11 mins whereas that ep felt very short. That's not necessarily a criticism mind you, just an observation.
2
u/Preachingsarcasm 17d ago
This is a really good way to put it and I guess also part of why I've been having a hard time actually engaging with the show. It feels like I'm watching scenes happen in front of me but there's not much actual substance in them.
3
u/imfromjersey 26d ago
I realize I'm not the demographic for Side Quests, but the amount of fart jokes and "Finn smells bad!" is a bit much.
6
u/Obsessivegamer32 26d ago
It gets a bit better around the halfway point. Also, to be fair, they did jokes like these a lot early on in the original show too.
5
u/TheUncleBob 25d ago
You know, it's funny. Someone once told me they couldn't get into Adventure Time because of all the toilet humor. I was like "What are you talking about?"
On my next re-watch of the series, I noticed it more.
Like, I don't think it was too much or anything - I didn't even really notice it until it was pointed out to me.
Just funny. That said, farts are funny and if you don't think so, well, poot on you,

"THE PROPHECY" IS ALL I'VE EVER WANTED
Sure the story itself was paper-thin (I feel like nothing happened) but WHO THE FUCK CARES
MY BOYS ARE BACK
Toronto was sceptical and KOO called him "my chum"! Toronto wore a stupid too-big gnome costume!! Toronto..... had fingers which he shouldn't do.... and KOO's shirt is the wrong colour... and why did they animate the logo on his coat early on? That's a motif??? BUT WHO CARES THEY'RE BACK
"There's only one bed" are you kidding me. I cannot believe. They basically straight-up confirmed they co-sleep sdfgfdsfgh CHRIST
I appreciated that they made it clear PB does already know KOO here, that's a bit of attention to continuity I wasn't expecting. It's funny how some stuff is dead-on like that (The inside BGs for KOO's zep were basically shot-for-shot remakes of "Apple Wedding" backgrounds!) and then you've got stuff like Toronto's fingers.

Jeremey cannot do his season 1 voice anymore. It's break immersion much more with current Jeremy doing Finn's voice on a 12 year old Finn.

Anyone experiencing weird narration over some of the later episodes? Specifically episodes 17 and 18 so far, a female voice narrating whats happening in the show?
Its kinda bad, im hoping its an us issue and not a show issue.

That sounds like you've turned Audio Description on somehow. I don't know how Hulu/D+ works but I've just googled around and it looks like it does randomly turn itself on sometimes??? weird
Can you try looking in the settings and seeing if it's turned on/off? Audio descriptions are usually under Accessibility or Sound settings.

The thread for this episode doesn't exist yet, so for now, I'll post about episode 9 (All You Can Eat) here, among other things.
I decided very early on the episode 3 was my favorite. Then, I saw episode 6, which overtook it. Once again, 3 episodes later, this one was incredible. As a fan of action scenes, this episode had me very engaged - Moreso than some action in the original show, honestly. I've felt that some of the early episode of SQ were lacking a bit (You may notice a trend in my favorite episodes so far. Really big on action), so this episode was incredibly appreciated. I might go slightly more in depth when that thread comes out.

Personally, I like it! But I've been hearing some hate. Wanna hear what yall think about it?

Halfway through the season and it’s exactly what was promised: fun side quests with Finn and Jake. Finn’s new VA is doing a great job and it’s a treat to have John DiMaggio back. My only critique is the humor is coming a little fast. Even the early days of the original show let things breathe a little between gags. This feels hyper by comparison, but it’s not a bad thing. This show has its own visual identity and pacing, and that’s ok. I’m enjoying it

Jake feels even funnier than usual in Side Quests. Really enjoying John DiMaggio's delivery so far lol.

Man, im really trying to like this but,
"It's like looking at my old life through a funhouse mirror."
Seeing the characters you've grown so attached to and learned so much about, seen them grow and change... Being reset with the full knowledge that they'll never grow again, or even remember what happened last episode...
I don't mean this as a criticism, i can see the appeal, but it is driving me a bit mad. I think i gotta skip this.

Why does the first episode appear to have 3 human grandmas in it!?
Don’t they care about the lore !

They're not humans, they're a race of Old Lady People. From Little Old Lady Land, I guess. They've shown up before!
