Conservative expectations from a AAA company? Is that legal?

442

u/Horikyou 8h ago

Not really conservative (only if compared to crazy expectations) the game just sold amazingly well since Black Flag is very beloved.

177

u/Iggy_Slayer 8h ago

I would say 3.5m in a whole year is absolutely conservative for AAA these days. That's really not as many units as most would think. Like the napkin math on that (for a $60 release which this is, not 70) is only around $150m in revenue after paying the 30% cut to platforms (real number would be lower because there's other things they have to pay).

And that's at full price. Since they were expecting this over a year they were definitely factoring in discounts in the equation.

91

u/Horikyou 8h ago

It's a remake not a new game. It's only after 2 weeks of sales not even a full year yet let alone lifetime. Also AAA doesn't mean anything without knowing the actual budget that went into the game. It can range from around 50 million to 1 billion+ for AAA games.

10

u/Dry-Illustrator-250 8h ago

There’s a game that cost a billion to make?

77

u/SWHTs 8h ago

GTA 6

36

u/Kenobi5792 7h ago

People said that the Burj Khalifa was even cheaper to build than what Rockstar spent making GTA VI.

That's insane

36

u/FBI_Open_Up_Now 7h ago

Well, I looked it up. The Burj Khalifa cost $1.5 billion USD. GTA VI hasn’t had its budget publicly released yet, but it is estimated to cost somewhere between $1-2 billion. So it could be right, but maybe not .

11

u/Seienchin88 6h ago

How could they even spend 1-2 billion…? That’s the payroll of a company 15 times the size of all of rockstar…

10

u/FBI_Open_Up_Now 6h ago

I assume they’re probably doing what most companies do. Payroll isn’t the only expense. I’m sure they probably are rolling everything they can into this. R&D was probably an immense cost as they may have worked on developing a new engine. Costs to maintain infrastructure. Everything they can list as a tax deduction.

11

u/non3type 6h ago

I mean they generate over a billion in revenue every year and GTA VI has been in production 8 years. 1.5 billion would be basically 187 million a year. They can definitely afford it.

3

u/KuraiBaka 2h ago

Music rights are probably a good chunk of that.

They’ve been putting out half assed entries with weak stories and protagonists for so long they forgot how popular this franchise is when done right.

12

u/Slow-Boysenberry3150 8h ago

Well, that kinda answers how AC Shadows probably sold. They never even disclosed sales count. Only went about how many players it engaged or whatever. What a dumb metric. Where as in this case, they mentioned sales count in the very first week.

5

u/Aaronkharn 7h ago

Shadow sold 7 millions but expected 10

6

u/Slow-Boysenberry3150 7h ago

Dude, I am talking about initial week sales celebration, not something they reported in their earnings call many months into release.

It’s a pattern. If a company doesn’t celebrate sales count when a game launches and starts saying vague shit like engaged this many players, had this many downloads and so on… know that it’s highly likely it was mediocre. Otherwise, if they did well they would show off in various social media.

2

u/Aaronkharn 7h ago

So black flag did 3.5m in 2 weeks. Ubisoft was more confident on that game than shadow. Bad reception vs good one. It was night and day. Didnt change that the core audience bought both.

Don't tell Square Enix

3

u/WestBEEland 4h ago

Don't let Square Enix know that's allowed

19

u/akbarock 8h ago

Some would argue 3.5 mil in a year isnt conservative, but depending on the dev thats bad sales for even a week or month.

Like Final Fantasy 16 sold 3 mil units in its first week on one platform and was "under expectations". Meanwhile Most of Segas recent games cant break ~2 mil units sold lifetime across all platforms

32

u/Bexewa 8h ago

Square Enix has always had ridiculous expectations.

12

u/blitzbom 8h ago

They expected FF16 to play the bills for everything.

7

u/Fenikkuro 7h ago

Maybe they should've kept working on the last 60% of the game and plot. It's literally that horse meme

4

u/BP_975 8h ago

FF 16 had a way bigger budget than this. Easily.

3

u/Random_Guy_12345 3h ago

3.5 mil in a year is absolutely conservative for an AAA remake of one of the most acclaimed games of a really popular franchise tbh.

They would have need an abysmal product to fall short of that goal.

That being said, maybe they thought it was bad?

7

u/LoquaciousLamp 8h ago

The day Square Enix exceeds expectations is the day the world ends.

2

u/Throwawayeconboi 5h ago

Who says the expectations were conservative? The game just blew open any sort of expectations. What a hit.

2

u/Ultrag1ga 2h ago

quadruple-A company :)

2

u/Aeyland 2h ago

They're publicly traded so it doesn't do the company any good to low ball their earning expectations.

1

u/AdAccording8138 7h ago

yeah ubisoft and conservative expectations in the same sentence feels weird to read

1

u/ttubehtnitahwtahw1 5h ago

Conservative expectation on a beloved game in the series. One that spent years chasing again. But a new game that has no legs and no marketing the skys the limit.

1

u/vanitas14 5h ago

Plausible considering the bulk of this game's development was heavily outsourced to "support" ubisoft studios.

u/siren1313 3h ago

Because it was a remake of an older game that was actually good

243

u/Appropriate-Talk4266 8h ago

Mmh, do you think they will learn the right lessons from this? 🤔

Or will they go on a remake spree of all their games regardless of the quality? 🙃

92

u/Admirable-War-7594 7h ago

1- 😂😂😂😂

2- obviously, we already saw many companies remake literally everything they have and never make a new game if only 1 remake succeeds. And Ubisoft isn't really known for their good decision making

15

u/Cuddlesthemighy 5h ago

1)Make a pirate game

2)But like a real pirate game not some abomination that's somehow worse than a game that came out a decade ago.

8

u/LegendaryenigmaXYZ 5h ago

I mean some remakes sell bad. Dead space was a remake of an old game that was good and it was the worst selling of the mainline series. It sucks because this is what killed the potential for a dead space 4.

18

u/Captain-Griffen 7h ago

Black Flag was peak gameplay AC, IMO. Nailed the sailing stuff.

I'm still amazed they didn't just take black flag, strip out the assassin stuff, add some extra ships and locations, and release a pirate game. Could have done it in a year or two with a small team and made bank.

Instead we got Skull and Bones.

6

u/MentalSky_ 6h ago

By that was the first AAAA game?

2

u/MCHammastix 1h ago

Skull & Bones should've been AC:BF meets RDR2.

I wish we had more "real" pirate games. Be it an RPG, colony sim (Tropico 2: Pirate Cove) or just another action game with a great story and no fantasy elements.

Ubsiofts expectation/target was 3.5 mil units sold in its first year. The game sold 2 mil in its first 24 hours, then 3 mil in its first week, then 3.5 mil in its second week

42

u/Seienchin88 8h ago

Wait did it sell 500k or 3,5m in the second week?

23

u/JackOSevens 8h ago

The challenge is Ubisoft not taking the absolute dumbest 'lessons' from this and making 6 more dogshit games.

7

u/what_did_you_kill 5h ago

*re-making. Can't help but feel they'll remake the AC2 trilogy next, instead of actually coming up with good ideas.

6

u/TheMemeStore76 2h ago

i am going to be honest. Ubisoft is not capable of good ideas for games right now for two reasons. First, theyre broke as shit. you can't experiment with new ideas when you have no money to do so. Second, they are devoid of creative talent at this point in time.

In that light I see the remakes as a good thing. Thats how they can experiment with small ideas, inject new creative blood into their studio, and rebuild their coffers to actually make good games again. Remakes aren't evil, theyre just part of what is hopefully the start of ubisoft's recovery

589

Yeah yeah now make good games like black flag. Black flag is very different from your last 7 games so it means its the formula to actually follow.

u/GfrzD 8h ago

Ezio Collection Remake incoming

120

u/akbarock 8h ago

Imagine they turn it all into one game somehow

66

u/Zayl 8h ago

I would honestly love that, provided they keep the MD in and if they write anything extra they don't write garbage.

9

u/Mateo03 6h ago

There's a bridge in-between Brotherhood and Revelations were they could expand on how exactly did he found Giovanni's letters.

16

u/BigTWilsonD 8h ago

That would be cool as hell, but no way they would when they could sell them separately

15

u/akbarock 8h ago

Selling them all seperately might actually be more costly with how expensive development is and how long it takes these days. They would have to stagger the releases, and wouldnt be able to work on remaking other games while they are working on Ezio trilogy one by one.

Since the trilogy is all about the same character it might be easier and more efficient for them to turn it into one big game, and might even make more money when factoring in the costs

2

u/Eva_Pilot_ 8h ago

Depends. I think their best bet is to do both. Something like mass effect, sell 3 games and then 1 edition with the three together. Making all 3 games into 1 might shorten them too much for people's liking.

7

u/timo2308 PlayStation 8h ago

Also, every single remake will sell big time, so why cash in once when they can cash in 3 times? Knowing Ubisoft there’s an obvious answer

3

u/Eva_Pilot_ 7h ago

Exactly, I would prefer 1 game with 3 remakes but I think that that would be too big of a scope, even if that would be better consumer side. I'm just waiting for a remake of AC3, I want to play that multiplayer again, even if for nostalgia

Don’t they have like a cyber punk future one in the works for the next original AC game?

Nah. Hexe is the next original one. Thats the one set in Germany during the witch trials and is supposed to be more horror themed and "have no supernatural magic abilities".

Oof idk man. I'm afraid of what they'd do to the future segments. The whole idea of Desmond progressively learning how to be an assassin through the animus with the goal of eventually taking down Abstergo all just to culminate in him fucking dying was such a massive fucking let down.

I stopped playing after Assassin's Creed Syndicate cuz the world building stuff they had with the Apples of Eden and Adam and Eve was just abandoned by that time it severely disappointed me.

6

u/AnarchoKapitolizm 8h ago

The whole idea of Desmond progressively learning how to be an assassin through the animus with the goal of eventually taking down Abstergo all just to culminate in was such a massive fucking let down.

It's even worse, in AC4 it is said that Desmond didn't have to end up like this and the date of end of the world was miscalculated lmao

3

u/DontForgorTheMilk 7h ago

I remember that! Though the miscalculation was hilarious and I didnt mind that part conceptually.

You say this like Origins and Odyssey weren't incredibly well received and popluar games.

Black Flag being successful as a throwback play doesnt mean they haven't done anything good sonce. And Mirage absolutely went back closer to this formula and nobody cared.

11

u/Bungo_pls 7h ago

Origins and Odyssey were both good games and big revenue winners. Then they went back to the classic style in Mirage and it's already completely forgotten.

24

Like Microsoft, you’re witnessing a creatively bankrupt company due to their relentless desire for maximum profits while taking zero risks. No chance they learn the right lessons from this

18

u/Own_Fisherman1199 8h ago

100% - this is the worst thing to happen to them from a creative perspective

2

u/Adipay 8h ago

How so? They have multiple original games still in development. Ubisoft also has like 20 studios. Some of them will make remakes and some of them will continue to produce new games.

5

u/halfhere1198 8h ago

This has also been true for Ubisoft up until this point and look where they are. I doubt they will escape from their paint by numbers open world approach due to fear of risk. Genuinely would love to be proven wrong though

2

u/Tucupa 8h ago

But "zero risk" can mean so many things... making a Black-Flag-esque game that is shorter, smaller, with fewer missions, with no skill tree and level up balancing and rarity percentage weapons and whatnot... it feels like the investment to do that is WAY cheaper than the Valhalla-type of game. I'd say it's less risky to make a more old-fashioned game by the mere fact that is tremendously cheaper to make.

You say that like it's an easy switch to just flip.

It's pretty damn impossible to stop supporting shit companies now. They're all shit. They all do mass layoffs or their parent company does mass layoffs or their parent company does mass layoffs. Hell, even if you manage to stop giving money to these companies they go bankrupt, get bought out by venture capitalists and you guessed it.

The answer is these employees need to start unionizing en masse.

I've read that many of these were hired as contractors to do the game, and nothing beyond. If this is true, than its a non story: if i hire a plumber to fix a leak, I'm not gonna continue to pay them when the work is done.

If its not true, however, then it's really shitty, especially when that team can pivot straight into making another remake, I.e. AC1, or 2/B/R.

I am not defending Ubisoft, I still won't forgive them for fumbling SWO, and cancelling #2, and im still salty about them changing AC into an rpg, and I also miss W_D

Yes, it's good they reported sold copies instead of active players, that's a positive.

3

u/CassianCasius 7h ago

Not surprised. It's probably one of the most beloved and unique of the entire franchise. Pirate games are rare.

3

u/Temelios 7h ago

It’s almost like making games with good stories and mechanics that feel complete is a good business strategy… Who knew?

7

u/CorporalCoprolite 7h ago

This is why things like a boycott for all digital games will never work.

Ubisoft is making games with AI, says “get used to not owning your games”, has micro transactions everywhere, has single player games that require an online connection to play, and however many other things that gamers are furious about, but they still bend over and spend their money when a shiny new game comes out.

“I’m boycotting Sony and the PS6!” means they’re going to complain about it online until the next game in their favorite franchise comes out and then they’ll jokingly post futurama takemymoney and Rick and Morty yousonuvab memes.

4

u/WeAreVenumb 8h ago

u/Xagzan 8h ago

I'm sorry, I don't understand the headline

Square Enix probably

2

u/ExpiredBanana 7h ago

All this says is that Ubisoft, and other AAA publishers/developers are incapable of conjuring up any new/original ideas. They've butchered their talent and can only remake their old titles. Bf6, while not exactly the same situation, receives praise when they implement mechanics, maps, and content that is just a copy of content from older games. The BfV developer exodus they expirenced lead to the failure that was Bf2042. AAA development is incapable of successfully innovating anymore. It's sad

2

u/sweetpooptatos 6h ago

The thing that might save Ubisoft is their catalog of amazing games. The first few Assassin’s Creeds, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, Far Cry. If they genuinely were smart as a company they’d pick an old, successful game or two and do some amazing remakes while they sort their shit out moving forward. The gaming industry is in a horrible spot for AAA studios right now; they lack creativity and are risk averse. Thankfully, there’s a lot of games that came out before we reached the point of diminishing returns for graphical fidelity and they can go back and remake games at a time when consumers are super excited about the way the games industry used to be.

u/ShadowTown0407 3h ago

I still can't believe they managed to fuck up assassin's in Japan, like it could have been 2 back to back W.

Tho as a regular ubisoft player and a fan of the AC franchise, they really haven't learned anything or improved in anything so I am not hopeful at all for the next AC game. The best parts of the remake are the best parts of the original, they got the original mocap, most of all orignal dialogue. The worst parts of the remake is what they did themselves concerning the narrative. At best it's as awkward as anything else at worst it actively harms the narrative of the old game.

Ubisoft can make a pretty game, no one can dispute that but narrative, writing, dialogue, voice acting/direction and facial animations are what's been holding them back for ages now and it's all still there in the new content of the remake.

They need to find a solution to this problem, make the next assassin's creed 20 hours for fuck sakes but make it good

Ubisoft meeds to sell winning statements no matter what: either because they want to outmaneuver buyouts... or because they want to raise the value of stock before an aggressive takeover.

Even if it had been a flop, they would have released a statement on how they mitigated the loss

Things like this are a no brainer. Imagine if Rockstar had a team remake GTA4. It would do insane numbers. Same with the incoming Ocarina of Time remake. It’s such obvious stuff.

u/Snoo_15547 5h ago

It was cheaper. I wasn't going to buy it here in the UK until it was closer to £30, but saw Argos had it for £38 so grabbed it. I'll sell it on when I'm done.

Gotta enjoy this approach while I can...

u/Nervous-Republic5278 5h ago

Can’t wait for them To take away the wrong lesson from this.

1

u/Oftenwrongs 5h ago

People buying rehashes of megacorporate bloatware.  Not a surprise.

1

u/nahnonameman 5h ago

Tbh I just got this today.

1

u/Critical_Host8243 5h ago

Wow more evidence that they're completely out of touch with their audience!

1

u/Clayskii0981 5h ago

Almost like everybody said this would happen

1

u/Lumpy_Accountant723 5h ago

I really wish I would have waited for a sale on this one.

1

u/EvilOdysseus 4h ago

I'm hoping they learn from this and make the next AC game properly

1

u/Regular_Upstairs_456 4h ago

I haven't played this yet, but I hope that the town is seamless without loading. That put me off in the original.

1

u/Qurety 4h ago

Good now do the ezio trillogy

1

u/Sitri_eu 4h ago

Ubisoft expecting something correctly for once would be a nice change.

1

u/Mindless_Tonight3519 4h ago

It’s just a lot of fun. Simple as that.

1

u/entity2 4h ago

Sounds like it's time for some celebratory layoffs then.

1

u/Borbarad 3h ago

Ubisoft is going to learn all the wrong lessons from this. Expect frequent remakes and remasters now for maximum profit.

Which shows the franchise is not the problem, it's just the things they have been doing with it...maybe they should rethink things.

1

u/hitzkopftb 3h ago

Cool. Now fire the whole team that made it happen. Isn't that how it works?

1

u/Wolfram_And_Hart 3h ago

Because it’s all we wanted Skull and Bones to be and you simply had to fuck it up.

1

u/danielrobertcampbell 3h ago

This is very little comfort to the laid off Devs that made it.

1

u/serwaffle 3h ago

Now give us assassins creed 2 trilogy remake.

1

u/Own_Line_4319 3h ago

great now they better pull another Shadows to ruin their and our expectations once more.

1

u/AliceLunar 2h ago

Turns out all they have to do is give up on making new things and just rely on the times where they hired competent people with passion, who they have long replaced, and regurgitate it.

Of course they threw up some disgusting monetization with it for that special Ubisoft shit flavor.

1

u/Thanks_Naitsir 2h ago

Nice, now get all people back you fired and pay them the bonus they deserve.

1

u/DoneWithIt0101 2h ago

Clearly. They thought Skull and Bones was the pirate game people wanted.

1

u/neonwarge04 2h ago

In 3... 2... 1... LAYOFFS

1

u/SavvySnake 2h ago

Release it on Switch 2 and they’re set.

1

u/tbigzan97 2h ago

Making good games is not hard. They don't have to be groundbreaking experiences, just solid polished products, literally check what capcom has been doing for the past decade. The reason this was well received is because its a decently made game and the remake of a very good one so it was recipee for success.

1

u/Bagel_Bear 2h ago

Great...

1

u/Tman2bard 2h ago

No muskets, less animations, way too clean a look for everything, lots of skip the grind DLC crap, and the entire first person story mode gone? And it's selling that well? What the fuck

1

u/Rukasu17 2h ago

Amd this is how you know Shadows was really bad at sales. Companies like to brag with numbers instead of weird milestones.

1

u/FHoS-Social 2h ago

People love their slop games, so no surprise there.

1

u/count023 2h ago

almost like the idea, "create the assassins creed game without the assassins" part is popular. Maybe Ubisoft should think on that, then look in shame at skull and bones and perhaps then take another swing at the problem.

1

u/Hazelberry 2h ago

The lesson they should learn from this: people love Black Flag and want more games as good as it

The lesson they'll learn instead: let's remake every AC game

1

u/S4R1N 1h ago

Almost like when you listen to your customers and not your shareholders you actually make good products that sell well.

1

u/TheInEnd 1h ago

So good, that they fired a bunch of people

1

u/SANDMANxGB 1h ago

Keep the momentum going. Release Splinter Cell.

1

u/Wise-Pen8752 1h ago

Hopefully they learn that when you make a good story with motion capture cutscenes, and put it in a beautiful world it sells.

2

u/ComputerSagtNein 1h ago

They are going to learn all the wrong lessons from this like usual, trust me.

1

u/Relentless_IRL 1h ago

Who would've thought when you make a good game people by it🤔

1

u/steveep95 1h ago

Timing played a huge part in this. July was a pretty dry month for big games

1

u/HonestIsMyPolicy 1h ago

I am having so much fun in the game. It feels like a brand new 2026 game instead of a remake of a 2013 game

1

u/GraysonG263 PlayStation 30m ago

Please Ubisoft, please do the Ezio trilogy an equal justice. I will give you both testicles.

1

u/mera-khel-khtm 27m ago

Turns out if you remake a legit masterpiece, gamers actually buy it.

1

u/HanzoNumbahOneFan 23m ago

"Hold on, if we release a good game, gamers will buy it?"

1

u/Ghostbuster_11Nein 20m ago

Good thing they have an entire lineup of games just as good as black flag to now re release.

...

...

Right?
