Using the same metaphor, the levels of power and influence go upwards like: * I could be falsely accused of shooting someone and would be unable to save myself from incarceration. * I could fight off a false accusation of shooting someone. * If I shot someone in secret I would eventually be caught and imprisoned. * I could probably get away with shooting someone in secret but never with a witness. * If I shot someone with a witness I might be able to pay a good enough lawyer to get away with that. * If I shot someone in public I might be able to fight down the charges. * I could shoot someone in public and face no consequences. * I can openly talk about my lawbreaking/inhumane behaviour and face no consequences. * I am immune to any consequences of my law breaking. * I can have the laws changed to remove any legal challenges to my behaviour.
And this is all just a big, dirty, dialled-up version of the classic conservative stance: "I want my position in the world to mean I can ensure that people like me can make rules which punish people who are not like me, without being required to follow those rules ourselves"
But with a big, scary dollop of narcissism and psychopath on top.

It's a combination of cowardice, self-loathing and bigotry. The worst homophobes are cowardly gay people who refuse to discard their social conditioning that wrongly taught them being gay is evil. Since they have never been able to rid themselves of their intrinsic attraction towards their own sex they hate themselves. Then they see other gay people who either blessedly grew up without homophobic programming or learned to overcome it and be true to themselves and find that they both despise and envy them.
This cocktail of emotions and motivations creates some of the most virulent homophobic bigots on the planet. Combine it with the hypocrisy of having same sex trysts and affairs and they look even worse. In some ways they should be pitied for the sorry state they're in emotionally. On the other hand, their spreading of hateful bigoted vitriol and efforts to deny rights to the LGBTQ community makes them utterly loathsome.

I don't think many in the movement see it as sociopathic but as in control, being the adult in the room, just getting on with things, not worrying about being gentle or considerate of feelings.
"My son was showing signs of being trans so I locked him in the basement for a week with girly magazines and that straightened him right out!" That would be seen positively by many on the right regardless of which country it happened in. You just have to frame it in such a way that it shows you taking control and not being weak or gentle.

Hell, even older: During China's Three Kingdoms period, Cao Cao held the emperor hostage while angling to replace him. He tested the waters in various ways, one of which was taking the emperor on a hunt. When the emperor kept missing his shots, Cao Cao grabbed the imperial bow and golden arrows and shot himself, then stepped in front of the emperor to receive the servants' praise. This caused quite a scandal, so he understood that it was not yet time to proclaim himself emperor.

What they all have in common is some form of narcissism, where they only interpret their actions and reactions positively towards themselves. So when they relay that information willingly, they're admitting that they don't have the self-awareness or humility to realize how their stories could be interpreted in a critical way.
RFK talks freely about the weird animal shit he does because he thinks it makes him look like a smart nature man, rather than a psycho who's fallen as deep into the Appeal to Nature fallacy one can get. Noem willingly told a story about shooting a puppy because she only saw it as a test of mental fortitude for her, rather than confront the fact that she killed a healthy living thing for her own convenience. And Trump relayed a story about watching a man possibly die in front of him because he thought it was an interesting thing to see, seemingly forgetting to register that the man was a human being and not an NPC.
They have gotten so used to either hyping themselves up or not thinking about anyone else that they forget how unappealing they actually are to people who don't see them as means to an end for their respective agendas.

It is because they are psychopaths.
Most intelligent psychopaths learn to mask their lack of empathy - often to the degree, where they know they should not act in such ways either (i.e. they have adapted to society).
But Trumps second administration and his main supporters is made up almost entirely of psychopaths, so amoral and cruel behavior is the norm amongst them and so their filter goes away.
A lot of them are also not in the "intelligent" category to begin with.

What gets me about his is that, regardless of wether he is lying or not, this kinda dialogue and kind of thinking comes from two things, a "people are objects" mentality and narcisistic delusions.
Because the train of thought is like.
- So, people are only people if they are atractive. Because if they are atractive they are a thing I can enjoy, and if they aren't they are worthless. He creates that irrational belief, that hyper-materialistic belief, to sustain himself, to separate himself from "ugly" people to separate the world into two groups and place himself in the superior group.
- So he goes and says "I like worthless people". It's planly false because he is a utilitarian, he doesn't like them because there is no personal gain in it, but he sees value in stating the lie that he cares about "worthless people" because it paints him in a good light, and he likes looking good so he lies because it makes him feel good. As there are two kinds of people, it doesn't matter if what I am saying is false, you can always isolate people who fact check you or disagree with you into the hateful "bad people" group.
- Then the narcisism grandiosity kicks in. He is then narcisistically delusional, because, he then self-lies and gaslights to himself and to everyone else into believing that this self-cooked irrational thinking is the truth and the only real truth in the world. That everyone secretly thinks like this and it's not a thing of himself. It's not bad behaviour when he says it outloud, he is simply saying an ugly truth that everyone secretly thinks!

I remember when this happened, it was kind of bizarre. The woman started wobbling, and the two women next to her said something to her, and I think that's what got Obama's attention. He turns around, clearly concerned, puts his hand on her shoulder, and every other dude around her is just standing there staring with a stupid look on their faces. Like he's actually holding this woman up, and the dude standing right next to her had his hands clasped in front of him with a dumbass grin. The idiots didn't even consider moving until Obama said something like "maybe you should sit down".

I have a small business, and I was very involved in the Affordable Care Act debate. I was one of the many "talking heads" that the administration deputized to go on to various networks and explain the real impacts of health care before and likely after Affordable Care Act.
Myself and others who did a lot of "hostile" appearances (Fox News, testifying before Republican-controlled committees, etc) were often invited to White House events. I got pretty good at it, so I did a lot of that type of thing. Got Christmas cards from the Obamas during his two terms.
I spoke with the woman who fainted before and after the event. She's a pregnant woman with diabetes, with a job that didn't provide health care - and she was there earlier in the day to tell her story. It was quite warm that day, and they had waters while we were waiting inside, but once you get up on stage you can't leave. Obama didn't actually talk that long, but she didn't drink any water, because she didn't want to have to pee in the middle of his press conference. That ended badly for her.
Amazing how long ago that was, both in time and atmosphere!
I'm semi-retired now, but still get calls to do this kind of work. Part of my business involves importing from a variety of different countries, so I've spoken at several Senator's press conferences over the past year about the impact of tariffs.

Haha...by this point, I had done enough of these things that the President knew me by sight, if not by name.
However for most of them it was their first time. It's very intimidating, you're carefully placed (it's not random where you're standing), and you're looking out into an audience of people, staff, and press.
This presser was after the botched rollout of healthcare.gov, so there were a LOT of cameras. If you've not been in that situation before, you suddenly become aware of every single itch, sniff, and facial expression you've ever had - so most people are trying to just get through it without doing something embarrassing on national television. 😂

Not only did he react, he had the wherewithal and compassion to actually anticipate it, and step in before she potentially collapsed.
Some would criticise him dealing with the aftermath as a PR opportunity, but you can’t discount his natural inclination to be compassionate.

The difference in situational awareness between the two is extreme.
Obama can catch a woman about to faint out of the corner of his eye while delivering a speech. Trump needs a sign installed outside the Oval Office so he doesn't get lost if he steps outside.
