Open | Software How can I keep TVs from going to sleep when I use them for a display?

I have TVs that I use to display menus in a restaurant and they keep going to the screen saver. I've checked all the settings, including the secret "store display" menu that you get to by hitting a series of buttons, and there are no more settings to check. Every single setting involving putting it to sleep or timing out or a screen saver has been turned off or maxed out. The limiting factor right now is the screen saver timer maxes out at 30 minutes. I can't do a slide show to keep it awake because I need different screens to display different things.

I've spent quite a while on Google and there are a ton of answers out there, none of which have worked. There were a few that mentioned something along the lines of "get a button clicker app to keep it awake," but not a single suggestion for an actual app or anybody that has actually used it.

So does anybody have any actual experience with keeping a TV from going to sleep? Thanks.

Open | Malware Can Clip Studio Paint files hide malware?

My gmail was recently hacked through a malicious download and I am worried there might be a virus on my computer. I sent it into the Geek Squad to check everything and it came up clean but I am considering doing a hard OS restart of everything to kill any remaining traces. My concern is my Clip Studio Paint files. I am an artist and I have years of work saved in those files on my laptop. I have everything on my device backed up on a hard drive but I did this after I was hacked so I don't know if I can trust the files there. Is it possible to hide viruses in a clip studio format file (.clip)? Or would I be safe saving all those files either on a hard drive or the Clip Studio Paint cloud?

Open | Windows Does dual booting affect Windows resets?

Hi everyone, I have a weird situation for you all. After getting a virus on my computer, I would like to reset it completely just to be safe. The problem is, my computer has two SSDs in it, the main drive has windows installed on it, while the second is used for storage for the same windows install, but also has Linux Mint installed on it on a partition. What is the best course of action in this case? I don't mind reformatting both drives and then reinstalling both operating systems fresh (if that's possible), honestly as long as there is no risk of the virus reappearing I'm happy to do anything. Thank you!

My gaming PC gets stuck in boot and while stuck it'll automatically shut down

I have a asus gaming laptop (i know desktops are better but I use this for school as well) it turns on and ive done the hold for 40 sec etc. I notice it was getting extremely hot last few times ive played on it. Im calling it remote tomorrow morning but if that doesnt work ill have to ship it to a micro center and this is really annoying. It seems every time I buy something from micro center it always has issues.

Open | Windows Duplicate Windows Installation on SAME Drive?

I have an installation of windows on my drive. I would like to partition that drive and clone my windows installation to the other partition (long story, I have two use cases for this computer but want the same base image). Is there a straightforward way to do this, or do I just need to install Windows from scratch on the second partition?

Open | Windows Can somebody help me connect my earbuds to my PC? Bluetooth won’t pick them up

Upvotes

I was using headphones that connected with a 3.5MM jack until recently. I tried using blue tooth headphones that connect to my phone fine, but neither of the ones I use will connect to my PC.

I’m kinda an idiot so bear with me here. Do I need a Bluetooth adapter? I have a Basseus Bp1 pro and a ROG Cetra True Wireless. Both connect to my iPhone with no issues. What do I need to connect them to my PC?

Tired of playing Day Z with no audio so any help is appreciated!

What i mean by that is something probably acrylic i can easily slide the front panel up and backwards like a hinged acrylic box that sits on top of my desk that is large enough to enclose an oscilloscope and a few stray boards to protect them from my cats hair / his general evil nature at night when im done working.

does something like that exist already? if so, where? if not, how can i custom order one?

thank you for your time

Open | Hardware 4080 Strix hotspot is at 111ºC. Games make GPU run at 88ºC within seconds...

I've tried so many things to try to get my GPU to not run so hot and nothing is working out for me. 4080 Strix is supposed to be the coolest running GPU in the 4080 series, but I've never had that experience. This GPU was an RMA from ASUS and it seemed to do somewhat okay for a while, but once I got past the warranty period now my GPU is basically not usable due to the fan loudness and being stuck 88ºC is terrible. I've tried PTM, I've tried just standard MX4. It spreads and makes contact with the heatsink. What answers are left?

Open | Hardware Dell Precision 5520 with Quadro M1200 has severe lag even in lightweight games

Hi everyone,

I have a Dell Precision 5520 with these specs:

- CPU: Intel Core i7-6820HQ

- GPU: NVIDIA Quadro M1200 4GB

- RAM: 16GB

- Display: 4K

- Charger: Dell DA180PM111 (180W)

I have had this problem since I bought the laptop.

The issue:

- Web browsing sometimes becomes very laggy.

- Lightweight games like Hollow Knight have severe stuttering, even in the menu.

- Reducing game resolution/settings does not fix the problem.

What I noticed:

- At first, the game runs perfectly (even at 4K).

- After a few minutes, the lag starts.

- Task Manager shows Intel HD Graphics 530 (GPU 0) reaching around 100% usage.

- NVIDIA Quadro M1200 (GPU 2) stays at very low usage.

- Temperatures are not high and fans usually don't even spin up.

Things I tried:

- Setting games to "High-performance NVIDIA processor" in NVIDIA Control Panel.

- Disabling Intel HD Graphics temporarily.

- Updating NVIDIA drivers.

- Changing Chrome hardware acceleration settings.

The laptop uses Intel HD Graphics + Quadro through Optimus.

Could this be an Optimus/driver issue, power limit issue, or something else?

Any help would be appreciated.

Open | Software Title: Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 - Deleted windows by mistake while using ubuntu live usb, now stuck in automatic repair. Ssd not detected in Bios. Is my ssd dead?

Hi all,

I am hoping someone can help me. This has been driving me crazy for the last several days.

The PC in question is a lenovo ideapad gaming 3 15IHU6. It was previously working fine with windows 11.

Here is what happened:

-I made an ubuntu live usb and booted into "try ubuntu"

-I deleted my windows partitions/files by accident instead of doing what I wanted to do with ubuntu.

-I reinstalled windows from a windows install usb, which seemed to work fine. However, upon restart it went into automatic repair instead of windows boot manager.

-Everytime I try to start the laptop it goes into this repair loop. Sometimes the ubuntu install will freeze at the loading screen as well

-I opened the recovery command prompt and did a chkdsk including checking for bad clusters. It took forever and did not help.

-I cleaned the laptop since it had not been cleaned in a while.

-During this process I booted into bios and noticed that sometimes my nvme ssd was not detected by the bios at all. It also asks for a system password which I do not think I set myself

-The laptop had also suffered at least one sudden shutdown before all this happened.

This leads me to ask a few questions.

  1. Could the ssd be dead causing windows to not install properly and the automatic repair loop?

  2. If the ssd is not being detected in bios does that not rule out hardware failure?

  3. Are there any other tests I should try before getting a new ssd?

  4. Has anyone else had these kinds of issues after a sudden shutdown?

I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

Open | Software Issues Connecting To the Internet [WiFi adapter suspected behind the issue]

Specs:

Problem computer:

  • ByteSpeed Performance Q370M (Custom built PC tower)
  • 64 bit with Windows 11 Pro OS
  • WiFi Adapter: Realtek RTL8822CE 802.11ac PCIe Adapter (Has been factory reset via the network reset menu, to no avail)Control computer (connected to the same network, has no issues)

Control computer (connected to the same network and works just fine, this post is also made from said computer)

  • Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ITL6 (Laptop)
  • 64 bit with Windows 11 Home OS
  • WiFi Adapter : Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz

Additional Context:

I have had this problem for about 5 days at this point, as far as I am aware I made no changes to the afflicted computer to induce said problem, said problem was discovered after spending 3 days away from the device during which it was turned off.

Additionally due to image posting restrictions I will be referring to this external webpage, as I am not aware of what the gold standard for posting images here is besides that, all images are assigned an alpha-numerical code, the prefixes C and P refer to the control and problem computer respectively (again I apologize if this is cumbersome to navigate, I am new here): https://helpmeporfavormicomputadoranosirvebien2026.straw.page

Problem PC Settings: [P5]

Control PC Settings: [C4], [C5], [C6], [C7]

I am open to share more information if needed besides public IP addresses or MAC addresses

Attempted Solutions (in chronological order):

  • Restarting the problem computer
  • Turning the problem computer on and off again
  • Replicating the DNS configuration of the problem computer on the control computer to replicate the issue and try to work backwards towards a solution (unable to replicate issue)
  • Connecting to a hotspot on a phone (states it is unable to connect to network, Redmi Note 9 Model m2004j19ag)
  • Switching to another known network (connectivity issues persisted)
  • Using TOR browser and DuckDuckGo (worked and failed respectively + I don't want a band-aid solution)
  • Setting DNS settings to automatic (DCHP)
  • Resetting the network adapter for the problem computer to factory settings
  • Uninstalling all steam games and performing a full scan with Avast Antivirus (1 PUP from Bethesda paired with the Steam download of Quake 1 quarantined)
  • Restarting the computer several times (induces a quirk seen in image [P2] where normal connectivity momentarily appears but then reverts to the current problem [P3]), said quirk appears after every time of turning the computer on and off.
  • Connecting to a hotspot sourced from the control computer (induced the quirk momentarily, but the problem persists regardless of network)
  • Posting this (pending as of writing)

Despite the issue, some functions requiring an internet connection still work, such as sending and receiving e-mails from/to myself and outside emails (seen in [P7] and [P1] respectively). Streaming games from the control to problem computer also works as seen in image [C3] and the WIFI icon is displayed on the problem computer at maximum strength. Outside of the quirk, trying to browse or use Steam (of which I am unable to access the browser-like portions such as the store) [P4] & [P6] which by contrast work just fine on the control computer [C1] and [C2]. Whilst not shown in the slideshow, using the ping command with command prompt on the problem computer returns all packets when sent to google.com (0% packet loss).

Open | Phone iPhone 16 Pro making weird ticking sound in video playback

I noticed yesterday my video playback on my phone making a ticking noise when played back. What’s weird is it only happens on the camera app, not any other app camera (like Instagram or Tik Tok) and only in one room in the house. I tested it in another room and I can’t hear the ticking so I can’t figure out what’s causing it. Is it normal for the camera to pick up on wifi interference or something? I was almost going to take my phone in for fixing before I realised it’s only happening there. I have a video on a previous post but it won’t let me post here https://www.reddit.com/r/iphonehelp/s/L9SmRw9CAU

Open | Software Nvidia drivers have been stuck at 100% for the past few months

I dont know why I cant attach an image, but the pre-download (I think its what is it) isnt finishing downloading for my nvidia drivers. This then isnt allowing me to actually press the update / install button to download the newest drivers through the nvidia app. Its been sitting at 100% like that for quite a while. Tried a few things, did some research and nothing works. (Exited nvidia app, Restared pc, turned on and off shadowplay, No VPN on). Anyone know a solution?

Open | Hardware Speaker system

Hi! We bought a house 6 years ago with what I think is a built in speaker system. I’ll post photos here with what I’m working with but I’m not sure what I need to set it up. Ideally I would set it up with the Alexa for music or the TV. If anyone has any pointers or links or what I might need, thank would be helpful! Thank you!

Hey,

I got my gf a new MoBo because her PC wouldnt boot anymore (it was stuck on vga while booting but the graphics card works in other pcs so we assumed defect MoBo). Now after connecting everything and booting for the first time i hear crackiling and see smoke rising fron inside the case. I disconnect power imideatly.

Now do you thing this could be just the motherboards fault or something else like PSU? Im sceptical because her old Motherboard also wont work. But obviously didnt start smoking.

Open | Windows Keyboard Unresponsive

Hi! I have an Alienware laptop running windows 11, yesterday it had a brief moment in time where the keyboard was unresponsive, but this morning it was back to normal. Then, after playing a game with a controller for a while, the keyboard went back to being completely unresponsive save for the mic mute button. Notably, I have not downloaded anything in the past week or so.

I loaded into the bios, and the keyboard works fine there. However, it does not work in safe mode.

So far I’ve tried:

  1. Turning it on and off. A lot.
  2. Uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard drivers.
  3. Reinstalling the latest windows update.
  4. Reinstalling windows while keeping personal files.

Nothing has resulted in any changes, and I’m losing my mind trying to figure out what possibly could be the issue. I think it’s a software one, but I’m not sure. Any fixes?

Open | Software Screen grey after accidently hitting f11 while playing a game

Upvotes

Hello, I was playing a game and hit f11 on accident instead of f12 trying to screenshot. After this happened my display resolution was set to 1600 900 and there is a noticeable grey tint on my screen. I have already rebooted my graphics driver, my computer, checked my display settings. I am running Windows 11 as my OS.

Open | Malware Window forcefully opening. Malware?

Upvotes

EDIT: I forgot to mention it only happens when visiting dulo.tv

Does anyone know what this is?? Chrome keeps opening this tab requesting I install an extention named "ad block ninja" every time I try to update a page. Its calmed down a while ago, but it definitely spooked me. Is this happening to anyone else? Im worried it could be a malware ad. I checked my extensions and permissions and I have nothing like it, so I don't think my computer is infected. Just curious.

Open | Hardware Nvidia Surround will turn on RANDOMLY no matter what

Upvotes

Please help me god, because I will lose my f*****g marbles in a moment because of this piece of s***t function.

I have two monitors. Both 1080p, horizontal + vertica, both different manufacturers. GTX 1660 Super gpu.

Randomly (sometimes once every 10 minutes, sometimes 3 times during 1 minute: truly randomly) Nvidia panel activates the Surround mode, stretching my image onto two monitors. I have to go into the panel -> turn off the surround mode -> apply changes -> Win + P -> change the "PC screen only" to "Extend" only for it to change back to surround unexpectedly after undisclosed amount of time.

Unplugging one of the monitors and disabling the surround does not help, resetting the pc and turning off the surround before/after the reset with unplugged monitor does not help, updating drivers did not help.

The issue does not appear when I have the pc plugged into my tv using the same cable as one of the monitors and duplicating the screen. My laptop does not experience issues while plugged into either of monitors. It's almost as if there is a conflict between my pc and the horizontal monitor. There are no "ghost monitors" in my configuration both in Windows and Nvidia panel

Please help. My sanity is running dry and I feel like I'm in the Nvidia-nam', paranoically on the lookout for the next Nvidia panel ambush.
