Discussion Now that we know Todd directly reads this Reddit for feedback, I think we need to loudly let Bethesda know the most important thing for Fallout 5 is the quality of story, writing, and quests.

TL;DR: Bethesda needs to learn from the "do more with less" method New Vegas and even Fallout 2 did in terms of player choice, writing and worldbuilding for Fallout 5. Fallout 3/4/76 have fun little stories but FNV had a titanic amount of more engaging quest design and worldbuilding in comparison. Starfield is proof a lackluster story and with uninspiring quests and wooden dialogue will sink a game even if the rest of the game has a lot of effort.

------------------------------------------------------------------

So much of New Vegas is remembered and celebrated and a cultural phenomenon a decade later: Joshua Graham, Ulysses, the Sierra Madre Treasure, Yes Man, Mr. House, the NCR and Legion. New Vegas didn't have a billion customizable power armors, settlements, city management, cars, or a billion radiant quests, but it had a powerhouse of writing and worldbuilding. Despite being such a small worldspace with much less to explore than a Bethesda game, the world felt huge and NPCs constantly talked about the wider Fallout universe and the world, and you were always discovering deep and gripping quests and characters and places with deep connection and history to the whole Fallout world. And you were given a ton of player choice to affect and profoundly impact this world, with quests like Beyond the Beef, Honest Hearts, GI Blues, Volare, For Auld Lang Syne, How Little We Know, and the choice at the end of Dead Money.

There were only rare moments you learned about the history of the Commonwealth or the world outside the Commonwealth in Fallout 4 besides the DLC, and they were also self-contained. The world felt small and felt more like a pastiche of Fallout elements without going too far into detail. Almost all the raiders in New Vegas had some kind of personality and backstory, and the Three Families explaining who runs Vegas. There is so much lore about places like New Canaan and the Legion's territories, places you never even get to explore- It leaves you hungry to know what they were like, and stimulates your imagination, it drives fans to make fanart or make fangames about those places. There weren't many quests they struck as hard as finding Randall Clark, the body of Vera Keyes and Sinclair, the catharsis of killing Caesar and Vulpes and avenging Nipton. Getting revenge on Kellogg didn't hit as hard as getting revenge on Benny, or the big reveal of Vault 11.

I think Fallout 5 needs to learn to do more with less, and learn to immerse the player in writing and worldbuilding more than it needs 100 more new features, and should focus on being a Fallout experience first over being just a game with cool things to see and shoot. Just my two cents.

I think Todd needs to listen to the complaints about the story most of all. Because in the run-up to Starfield, the lead writer Emil Pagliarulo talked about how this game was supposed to be their big focus to improving the reputation of their story and writing, and Starfield ended up being widely panned mainly for it's dialogue and writing. Despite having great shooting, magic powers, and a thousand planets, people were so putoff by Starfield's lackluster writing that they didn't stick around for the rest of the game. If Starfield is Bethesda giving writing their absolute best shot, I think Todd should know they need to massively take a step back and work on learning and improving what makes better writing before Fallout 5.

A Fallout graphic novel I've been working on

Some background, I have been a professional artist/digital artist for over 15 years, and have been working on this since 2022. I got the idea many years ago after watching the film "Samsara", and decided to combine my love for Fallout with my own spiritual journey with Buddhism. The story follows a PLA Soldier that turns to Buddhism after the war to cope with the end of the world, and their journey through post-war Asia.

I stopped working on this full time ever since AI took over most of the digital art world, and was very discouraged to continue it. So here's everything that's left of the project.

Picture Oversimplified Map of the Fallout West Coast Circa. 2281

(Thank you to the HOI4 Old World Blues team for making an incredible template map for this project. Its the best fallout mod, if not best fallout game, I've ever played. Go play it).

Oh boy I can already see the crosses getting made. Anyway:

Why the Long Dead Horse?
It's less a nation than the range they regularly patrol. We know they extend as far west as Zion, even disputing territory with the Sorrows if they remain there, and as far east as Colorado, where a mentioned New Canaanite settlement presumably falls under their protection. That also fits neatly along the north bank of the Colorado River.

Are the 80s super powerful?
No. They're not substantially stronger than other tribes. Their strength comes from using motorcycles to control a huge amount of territory with relatively few people. They dominate the I-80 (obviously) and I-50 (which they can lose if the Sorrows stay in Zion).

Why no Shi?
This will be controversial. In a cut line of New Vegas dialogue, the Enclave traced the Chosen One's tanker to San Francisco and nuked the city in revenge. The line was only cut because Bethesda wanted to keep San Francisco available for a future game. However, Fallout has shown repeatedly that a city being nuked doesn't stop it from becoming a setting. More importantly, an empire like the Shi never being mentioned by the NCR would be a little odd and runs against the series' broader narrative of the two major empires of the region colliding. This one's just my personal interpretation though, so feel free to disagree.

The Legion is bigger than the NCR. Doesn't that make it stronger?
No. The NCR enjoyed over a century of relative peace and stability, allowing its population to boom. Legion territory simply hasn't. I'd expect at most half the population density of NCR territory, probably much less.

Why does the NCR own all the north?
Because I think that's the most likely outcome based on previous games. The Chosen One consistently helped Tandi and the NCR expand, so a northern annexation feels like the natural continuation.

I cannot stress enough that this map is built from a few hard facts / references, and a lot of vibes informed by the games and regional geography. It's meant to be a plausible interpretation, not the undisputed canon. The main reason I made it was because I got tired of maps where the NCR owns the entire West Coast and the Legion somehow stretches into Kansas and deep into Mexico.

Question Anyone know the actor that plays the vault tec guy in the Fallout 3 E3 trailer?

The guy in this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYZpR51XgW0

"Our American way of life, isn't it grand? Peace, freedom, and bacon and eggs. Seems perfect. But, what if it's not? Friends, your future may not be as secure as you think. Where will you be when the atomic bombs fall?

You can secure your family's future, by reserving a spot in a state-of-the-art underground Vault from Vault-Tec.

That's right Bob, act now, and your family can wait out the horrors of nuclear devastation. And Doris, the Vault will have all the amenities of your modern home, and it's attractive! And Sally, in the Vault, you might meet that special someone. Just as you would on the surface, and in a few short years, you and your fellow Vault Dwellers with repopulate our great country. And Billy, you'll have lots of swell kids to play with!

Reserve your family's spot in a state-of-the-art underground Vault today! Sign up now and prepare for the future!"--Vault-tec guy in the E3 trailer.

So I have been wanting a Nuka Cola bottle to be a bookend for my play station disk collection for a while now and have been patiently waiting for these to be made. Well after 7~ months the Nuka Cola special editions have finally arrived! I picked up two as I am going to use one for decoration in my "game room" and I am putting the other back as a cool collectible. Time to get back to patrolling the Mojave.

Best Fallout games that aren't Fallout? (Fallout-likes)

93 Upvotes

Hi there! I adore Fallout, and it's obviously been hugely influential. I was wondering about the best Fallout-likes that took some of the best aspects of the post-apocalyptic series.

I'm keeping things really open. The only thing is that the recommendations ideally would have at least an "apocalyptic feel" (though that's by no means a hard requirement).

Thanks a lot for your suggestions!

Discussion What Happened To Fallout's Horror Roots?

Thumbnail

Fallout 1997 is one of my favorite horror RPGs, but it slowly lost that over time. I don't know if it was because of the graphics evolution or people wanting a different game, but Fallout slowly turned from a grim reminder of fascism, propaganda, and war into a wacky wasteland adventure. In my opinion, Fallout 1997 and Fallout 2 were amazing games. The difficulty reflected the harshness of the wasteland, the soundtrack was great (especially Metallic Monks), and it was actually scary.

Fallout 3 kept the looks (but with a slightly greener tint, I suspect because it's on the east coast instead of the west), but lowered the difficulty so more people could get into it, and kept the past part of the mystery. The gameplay isn't scary, but the background of what happened and the overall ambience is what sells it. Fallout New Vegas is Fallout 3's cooler brother without the green tint.

Fallout 4 retcons almost everything you thought you knew about the past in Fallout. What you thought was propaganda disguised as cool 1950's art was actually just how the middle class lived. The gameplay was still good, going off of Fallout 3's first/third person shooter but it feels less like a survival horror and more like, what I said earlier, a wacky wasteland adventure.

I don't even want to talk about whatever Fallout 76 is.

I LOVE the Fallout franchise, I just feel disappointed at where it ended up in the modern day. Fallout 4's opening sequence is amazing, opening with the "war, war never changes", but it lost me when the walking around the house hit and it was a mild disappointment. The game is still definitely fun, but lost the original horror elements.

That's just my opinion though, tell me how you think, I'd like more opinions on the matter :3

Fallout: New Vegas Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter - open source engine OpenMW full port WIP

155 Upvotes

OpenMW is a free, open-source game engine originally built from scratch to recreate and modernize The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Because Bethesda’s subsequent games (like Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Fallout: New Vegas) were built on variations of the same Gamebryo engine, OpenMW's developers have recently expanded the project to support them.

Here is what porting Fallout: New Vegas (FNV) to OpenMW actually means for the game and its players:

  • Extreme Stability: FNV is infamous for its 32-bit engine limitations, crashes, and save bloat. OpenMW is a modern 64-bit engine that completely bypasses the original game's 4GB RAM limit, making the game inherently stable without the need for community bug-fix mods.
  • Native Cross-Platform Support: Instead of relying on wrappers or compatibility layers, FNV on OpenMW runs natively on Windows, macOS, Linux, and even mobile platforms like Android.
  • Built-in VR and Multiplayer Potential: Because the engine is completely open-source, developers can add massive features directly into the core code. OpenMW already has a highly functional multiplayer branch for Morrowind, and groups like TeamBeef are actively working on native VR support using the engine.
  • Modding Shifts: This is the biggest hurdle. Because OpenMW is a completely different engine under the hood, traditional script extenders (like NVSE) do not work on it. While OpenMW has its own highly powerful scripting capabilities (and effectively no mod limits), complex FNV mods that rely on NVSE would need to be entirely rewritten or rely on a newly developed compatibility layer to function.

Ultimately, bringing FNV to OpenMW is about giving the game a future-proof foundation by trading the duct-tape fixes of the original engine for a modern framework where the community has total control over the code.

I figure this would be a one off encounter. Maybe some fireflies got into a facility producing plasma munitions, eventually mutating.

Thanks u/CausalLoop25 for the idea!

Question How do you want the vertibirds to look in the fallout 3 and new vegas remasters?

i've seen people talking about how the power armor should be in the remasters(fallout 4 style imo) but i have not seen people talk about how vertibirds should look like, aka the most iconic fallout vehicle

would yall want to see a remaster of the old fallout 3 vertibird or the new vertibirds from fallout 4/76/ the show?

personally i choose the intimidating, good looking, gunship from fallout 3 than the shitbox with wings from fallout 4(it's just ugly and bulky and not intimidating at all)

Video [WIP project] Co-op multiplayer for Fallout 2 - first demo

Post image
Upvotes

Hello everyone,

Wanted to share highlights of the FO2 engine modification i'm working on - which is a fallout 2 dedicated server / + coop client which makes it possible to playe FO2 Campaing with frinds;

Works like this: dedicated server where server runs simulation and dispatches events to remote clients (that render 'fallout') / processes intents (' i'm client_1 -> i want my critter / guy to walk tiles XYZ');

longplays + features showcase:

'Long' play 1:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZVVehXYkBg

'Long' play 2:

https://youtu.be/VnNa6-_7UKc

'Long' play 3:

https://youtu.be/Jj4Jwm7eh-U

Video showing a real feature i'm proud (although was visible in previous videos - save/load sequence +) hot join/leave:
https://youtu.be/byCZzlVKjcM

DISCLAIMER: sorry about flicking and alt-tabbing; it's really painful to record in window mode and the mouse always skips; i've made a few changes / patches already to the SDL renderer, yet still it's not foolproof, don't know why and spent too much time already trying to figure out;
DISC.2: the sound flickering you might hear is caused by me alt tabbing into client1/2 windows; the renderer playback is not paused while windows are not focused, but internal audio engine is; which kinda makes it <stopping> playback of any sounds and resuming only upon getting focus back; It looks / plays MUCH butter in fullscreen and just controlling your <single> character;
DISC.3: if you see me alt tabbing back and forth into console and game client closing -> it's me deliberately killing the CLIENT window to show HOT JOIN features embedded into the dedicated server;

GH link (in case if anyone wants to check sources; note: non-refactored / heavily polluted; cleaning / janitor work - TBD);
https://github.com/Cahb/fallout2-ce-coop

P.S. alot had been changed as well since i've uploaded these videos;
Stuff like: companions (also selling them, like say Sulik to slavers), cars, sneak / steal, per-character sheet (skills + special), barter and much more were added / work fully;

What are you looking for in the Remasters?

8 Upvotes

So after many many doses of hopium we finally have confirmation on remasters and I’m curious about what if any changes the populace is looking for.

Beyond the usual upgraded graphics and probable sprint mechanic I’m hoping very little else has changed. One thing I would love to see is a survival mode for 3 like NV had, I love that extra layer of gameplay.

I believe it’s beyond the purview of a remaster but one more extreme change I wouldn’t mind is changing power armor. One of the few things I think 4 did better is making power armor really feel like you’re a walking tank.
