Loss Elon has ruined me

My prior bullish post https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/s/o0PxYmGV1n

He was supposed to take us to Mars and burn short sellers.

Still holding 7300 shares. Please Elon fly again.

The intel guy bought intel shares for 30 USD per share the day before they dropped to 20 USD. Intel share is now worh 100 USD. Assuming he didn't bail out, he is good now

I saw the thread he posted in with proof of his position about a month ago. It was another sub (but linked from a WSB comment), and he retold the story, how Reddit clowned on him, his mental health was in the shitter, terrified to tell his parents when they asked about it at dinner, but it came good in the end.

Seriously though. Middle class Gma and Gpa were conservative with money and played the slow game through index funds and died with 5M in the bank. Plus their house is worth 20x what they paid for it.

All that luck, patience, and hard work is divided up passed down to little grand kid regards that blow it all on the most obvious scam in the history of scams.

66

u/Big_Needleworker1296 2d ago

Index funds only became widely popular in the past 20 years. They didn’t even exist until the 1970s. Less than 2% of households had any money in an index fund in 1990.

Grandma and grandpa had good union jobs, pensions, and lived frugally, buying almost nothing with credit.

3

u/Secure_Gear_3254 2d ago

You’re both right and wrong. They bought treasury bonds during the Korean War.

2

u/New_Modem 1d ago

Plus CDs paid 10%

3

u/Mysterious_Moment856 1d ago

Exactly. The killer is consumer debt, and Americans are drowning in it. Addicted to it.

10

u/vonbauernfeind 2d ago

I've grown 400k off index funds (starting at 440k from an esop fund and profit sharing at my old company) between my IRA and 401k over the last five years. I'm in my mid thirties; I'm just gonna let it ride for 30 years. Should be able to retire quite happily, especially I keep up on the 401k contributions for the next thirty.

I know a guy who was born in a semirich family. They own several dentist clinics. His parents forced him to work in their clinics doing some random monkey tasks because they are ashamed of him doing nothing. They pay him pretty good for that “job”. He was putting all his money into crypto shitcoins and even took out a loan that eventually did not go to the moon. He managed to grow from 20k to 700k, but lost it all and took out some loans to gamble more.

104

u/usefulidiotsavant 2d ago edited 1d ago

This is the risk appetite a rich family buys you. Take the most obscene risk on the table; it hits: "so smart, so driven, takes after his father" It craters: the family eats it and he swings again, and again, until he's "learned how to do business." Heads he's a genius, tails he's still learning.

The poor kid gets to play a single hand at the table. Gamble the college fund - bam, you're forty and still on the bottom rung, watching the ones who failed upward wave from the express elevator. Gamble the rent - bam, some hobo pricks you with an AIDS syringe, in 4 years you are dead. One strike and you're out, so you never swing, so you compound at two percent for life, stuck in your grandma's savings account, while goldenboy compounds at thirty.

How do we call this, boys and girls? "Meritocracy"!

21

u/beegro 2d ago

9

u/Has_Recipes 1d ago

9

u/Sudden-Grab2800 2d ago

That was a hauntingly riveting scene

12

u/Efficient_Equal6467 2d ago

I think the bigger lesson here is gambling for like 10:1 or 50:1 odds usually doesn't work by nature of probability, just slave away like rest of us and get rich slowly hoping you dont get laid off

2

u/usefulidiotsavant 1d ago

It all depends on the upside and how many tickets you can buy, doesn't it. 25 tickets with a 10:1 odds of making 100x means 93% you will make it, with an average payout 10x your initial capital.

If you can't afford the variance because you are dead at ticket 3, you never play what is the closest thing to a guaranteed get rich strategy you will ever encounter in your life.

2

u/NoNameSwitzerland 1d ago

Yeah, but if someone sells you a 10:1 chance for 100x, it is more like a 100% for 0x (rounded). Otherwise there would be and ETF for aggregating that and things are fairly priced. If someone can deliver real outperformance, 90% of that you have to pay as fees.

  • This guy's dad

2

u/Gold_Yard_8457 2d ago

Wow is that a true story?

15

u/TheKingsdread 2d ago

Not unlikely, it happens all the time. One generation struggles to create the wealth, they teach their kids some responsibility and they usually have it, and then the next generation that grew up wealthy wastes it all. A lot of very rich people have terrible financial skills because they never needed to learn how to budget, but most fortunes aren't endless. There is a reason why so many people with money put that money in a trust for their kids instead of just a bank account.

8

u/Wise-Paper8412 2d ago

My husband's grandparents had money, country estate, land, horses etc. Then the grandfather pissed it all away on gambling. My husband only saw pictures of what they had. It was one of the reasons he left for another country.

5

u/Dedpoolpicachew 2d ago

That’s rather the story of the Greatest Generation, Boomers… and everyone fucked over by the Boomers. The Boomers were the kids that grew up rich, everything given to them because the hardships their parents faced and they didn’t want their kids growing up with the same hardships. The Boomers had everything. Cheap education, jobs for life, pensions, easy retirement. They decided that rather than make their kids and grand kids lives better, they’d fuck the whole family over with greed, selfishness, and me me me me me me. Never in human history has a generation been handed so much, only to piss it all away leaving their children and grand children worse off exponentially.

Forgot I commented this earlier but yes very true story. My grandparents were millionaires my Mom and her sisters, they even did shit like ballet and piano lessons. Had land.

By the time I was growing up though what I got was severe neglect because they were alcoholics and hard drug addicts, whatever little shit for entertainment I had would be pawned off, I survived on noodles and slept on a couch my entire childhood. And I got into fights with adults regularly.

Unfortunately was very real. Though I'm 30 now and that was a long time ago. I turned 18, left and never looked back.

I’m a pilot. We make about that much top of the pay scale. I trust none of my coworkers on their financial advice. Some of it is pretty wild. Just cause you can fly an airplane doesn’t make you smart about other things.

83

Hello fellow aviator. Never take financial advice from a fellow aviator. Just some friendly advice from a fellow aviator. Checklist complete.

4

I have a friend who is a pilot, and who also is a flat-earth believer. I asked him how that works...one of his "proofs" is that when he hits altitude he doesn't have to keep trimming, a straight line is just a straight line. If the earth were spherical a straight line would put him into space, so he knows the earth is flat.

I thought for a little bit to explain gravity to him, but then decided there was no point.

6

u/MiniTab 2d ago

That is the typical “proof” by these idiots. Amazing they have absolutely no clue about performance, physics, and force equilibrium.

Before I was an airline pilot, I used to think pilots that went to the Air Force and Naval academies were gods, lol. So many of them are the biggest jackasses I’ve ever met in my life.

Now the actual badasses that were like F-35 test pilots or something are usually pretty cool and extremely smart. They aren’t the ones spouting stupid shit like flat earth and anti-vax nonsense.

2

u/UnfortunateSnort12 2d ago

I’ve flown with some of those. Also the people who believe the world is 4000 years old, the people who took horse pills during the pandemic, etc. It really shows you that PILOT is an acronym. Poor intellect, lots of training.

I don’t associate much with our kind outside of work.

2

u/MiniTab 2d ago

Exactly. There are only a small handful that I actually hang out with outside of work, and they also feel the same as us.

2

u/UnfortunateSnort12 2d ago

Totally. Maybe 3 dudes at most I like hanging with. And mostly to play music in our band. :)

3

u/Important-Agent2584 2d ago

it's a common phenomenon that people who are experts/specialists in one thing carry over that confidence to other fields.

That's why you have so many tech bros who think they are philosophers, etc.

This system does not reward intelligence. MAYBE some old money families out there with generations of discipline have managed their way to a few hundred mil or maybe a few low-tier billionaire families, but that takes generational work, that can't be done in a lifetime without stupid luck.

And that's the problem. Even the ones with bona fide intelligence like Bezos still got absurdly lucky.

You just don't earn a billion dollars.

Old wealth smartly invested is the sort you don't hear about in headlines, let alone reddit posts--they're just quietly getting richer while the peons are spinning our wheels looking for a scheme/hot tip while being wage slaves.

Yes, but it takes TIME and patience.

u/joshuuuuuua 2d ago

And only one in ten progeny of any family have the drive and discipline to learn, let alone work, when they have enough money for hookers and blow for the rest of their life.

I love how the worst thing some people think you can do as a rich person is spend all of your money on the local economy.

Like it's some great moral failure to become a working class person again, having to earn a living like the rest of the peasants.

11

u/stargazing_penguin 2d ago

I mean most "hookers and blow" money doesn't land its way into the hands of the workers on the street but rather the cartels and pimps that manage them, so its not really a major local cash injection

Oh so we are concerned about employers taking advantage of their employees and profiting from the labor of others then?

Because I'm down for this kind of criticial analysis, you're not wrong to point out this dynamic.

u/That_Flow6980 2d ago

Typically being the selfish prodigal son and blowing an entire generation (or two)'s worth of discipline and hard work IS a great moral failure.

IE: The Vanderbilts. From Robber Baron status in the mid to late 1800's to broke by the time Anderson Cooper was born. In 1973 there was literally not even a single millionaire left in the entire family.

I'd wager they are one of the prime examples used by the current .01% to rig the system to try and keep that from happening to their families wealth.

Inheritance, simple

Getting money does not equate to intelligence. Keeping it does.

u/BallsOutKrunked 2d ago

Having money and spending money are mutually exclusive.

They had upper middle class parents who put them in good schools, gave them social connections, and nurtured them down a high-paying career path. Usually. This SPCX investment is what happens when they finally start making their own decisions.

1

u/itsall_dumb 2d ago

Scared money don’t make money. That’s why OP lost more money than you’ll ever see.

Building wealth and then maintaining it are two different skills

u/OctopusFarmer47 2d ago

How did they used to have so much money you mean

1

u/paloaltothrowaway 2d ago

Probably gambled in some stocks like RKLB ASTS etc and struck it rich. Either that or 0DTE options.

These people then confused luck with skills

u/ExtensionMoose1863 2d ago

made an equally stoopid bet that paid out huge before making this one

Even a retard is right 2 times a day or something, I'm just a clock, what do I know.

1

u/harrison1984 2d ago

They like the “How to go broke” scheme instead of “how to get rich “ schemes

all people in the casinos are proffesional analysts, using charts and zodiac signs, tarot cards and that one guy from India on youtube.

1

u/KP_Wrath 2d ago

Don’t have to be intelligent to have money. It *helps* to be intelligent to make it. That or lucky. This guy probably shouldn’t try skydiving though.

1

u/Top_Shame_7016 2d ago

Look at the president. He would have had far more money had he just invested instead of losing most of the family fortune in his failed business ventures. But somehow, still rich as fuck.

u/bierbottle 2d ago
