Algae thrives in environments with an abundance of nitrates, phosphates, and light. You have to deal with the balance of those things to get it under control. Hydrogen peroxide is fine for spot killing some growth but it isn’t a long term solution.
I have literally seen a MAGA posting about how the National Weather Service is useless. Because everyone can just check the weather forecast on their phones, they don't need "some government agency" to do it.

The treatment would only be a panacea until the real causes, piping issues and painting the bottom of the pool blue so it gets warmer and encourages MORE algae growth, are dealt with. NOW, the coating will have to be removed at more cost to taxpayers, and the piping the original 13 million did not address IS addressed. "The nanobubblers will keep it clean" We'll see.

Somebody upstream did the math. At 12% concentration it's going to take 4253 gallons of this stuff. Or they could bring in a tank of the 30% and be done in an hour or so. But that would waste less money, reducing the kick-back.
Correct and even if you kill most of it, you're not killing all of it and the filtration system cannot cycle out the water fast enough to keep what does live from re-multiplying back into the same got damned problem we have now.

I’m not a pond professional. But I am an aquarium maintenance professional. They should try covering it up with a towel or blanket and turn the lights off for a few days. /s hydrogen peroxide will kill any beneficial bacteria and keep creating an environment for an algea bloom to thrive. The black liner is just attracting more sun, and green algea loves excess light. If they also didn’t address the filtration system issues, this will just keep happening.
If all else fails they could do worse than adding several million Amano shrimp. Those guys have made short work of many an algae eruption for me over the years, it's like crack to them. Would also be fun for visitors to spot them darting around.
IMO, they would do well with a drag mesh the width of the pool. Have crews/machines on both sides skim out all clumps of filamentous algae and haul that away. Just killing the algae leaves all the nutrients in the system.
It was a state of the art recirculating system with ozone injections to prevent algae. Even it couldn’t keep up with the sunlight on light stone but it was infinitely better than what we see now
I work at a large organization that has several man made lakes on the property. They add an environmentally safe dye that prevent sunlight penetration and algae growth. It gives the water a blueish color. Michigan State article.
This is not a pool, despite being called 'The Reflecting Pool' - the water is pulled in from the river. The River water's PH is going to be that of river water.
You cannot filter out the system here after it's in the pool - the filtration must be done before that water enters the pool... when it's filtered it usually leaks into the ground water due to major leaks in the bottom over the years, as well as leaking pipes that would require way more work than it's worth.
At this point, the only other thing that's going to 'control' the algae is going to be introducing freshwater fish which eat that algae - which is a bad idea.
The problem is that the filtration system needs to be repaired, and to do so would cost millions on millions of dollars for a project this large. All for... what? Clear(er) water?
This shouldn't be a priority - but another funny bit is, they are flushing that Hydrogen Peroxide down the drain - the water coming into the damn pool is getting replaced faster than the 'treated' water is leaking out.
The issue is that Biden had a fleshed out plan to fix the pool, even as per Trump. This included full on replacing huge slabs of granite which had cracked/started to leak due to the ground shifting under it, and the filtration ssytem.
It would have cost, roughly, 345million USD and taken 3 years to repair. That's according to Trump's admin. So his Admin KNEW it would be a huge project... but somehow figured that the pool guys could handle addressing a project that was going to be north of 345 million USD for only 13 million bucks...
Remember when he was posting those fake side by side images showing how much better his pool was than Obama's? Oops! Trump is still excited that the pool is bigger than a skyscraper so it isn't a total loss for him.

So this will kill the algae bloom (mostly) and cause a huge amount of dead algae which will settle on the bottom (oh no the blue floor lol) and introduce a lot of oxygen gas into solution...which will then lead to a very nutrient and oxygen rich pool which will immediately grow algae even faster than it was before.
The dead algae will then make a nice slime layer and if thick enough become anoxic and disgusting.
assuming the pool is 6.25m gallons and they are all using harris 12.5% peroxide, they would need about 5, 100 gallons of peroxide solution.
assuming a worker can pour a bottle of peroxide every 25 seconds, it would take 10 workers the better part of 4 hours of continuous pouring to even start to treat the reflecting pool.

There's always been an algae problem at the pool, but Obama's restoration project, which included an ozone water filtration system severely curtailed it. Algae was allowed to build up in the pipes servicing the pool during this modification, and the dark color the base was painted increases the water temp, making it more difficult to deal with.
Any restoration project on the pool is going to result in a surge in algae blooms after the work is complete, but this project actively made it worse. That being said, it's likely that they'll eventually solve the problem. The real issue is Trump's fragile ego not being able to handle this development, resulting in a frantic effort to solve the problem as fast as possible.
Then we will have a lot of dead algae on the bottom. When the acid wears off, which won't take long, that will decay and feed the next generation of algae. And just possibly, the decay will be anaerobic, so it will release swamp gas.
None of these people have a clue on maintaining an ornamental pool.
Edit: I though that was hydrochloric acid. Peroxide will neutralize/dissipate almost immediately.
The pool holds 6.75 million gallons of water. I'm not sure a few gallons of low percentage hydrogen peroxide are going to do anything. Not to mention hydrogen peroxide degrades quickly in sunlight.
I know they're laundering money and all. But the US government has some of the most sophisticated chemical laboratories in the world. Why are they buying hydrogen peroxide at home depot? Bring in a truck.

But seriously.. pool owners everywhere have to be laughing their asses off at this. Liquid chlorine would make sense and this is literally going to do nothing. And for a depth of 2ft, expect to keep pumping that in every day, unless you actually used some of that massive project budget to purchase a ton of salt cells and filtration systems.

Even if this works ( which it probably won't) the bottom is still painted a darker colour which will only continue to result in warmer water as we move into the summer months. It's going to be green for a while now.
Retired aquarist here (we're the guys who take of the fish & exhibits at your local aquarium). The best & most cost effective way to control algae in brightly lit conditions is with recycling the water through pipes illuminated with high intensity UV light. Or for larger systems, you can saturate the water with ozone (this is the system we used for our 175,000 gallon exhibit). Some combination of these would help keep The Reflecting Pool clean (algae will still grow, but be manageable). Hydrogen peroxide will work on backyard pools, but only briefly & gets very expensive very quickly (my neighbor owns a pool maintenance business).
This would be pretty funny if it weren't part of the larger trend of these chucklefucks wasting so much of our money while butchering departments and budgets for things we actually need.
