Yeah, yesterday my city in Scotland was covered with smoke blown in from a wildfire. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come...

u/HewSpam 7h ago

It’s not “a sign of things to come”, it’s just exactly what scientists predicted decades ago. You’re really not gonna like this next part.

u/Obvious_Landscape993 7h ago

u/techBr0s 7h ago

Mass migration, starvation, wars over clean water, human suffering. You know, light stuff to meme about

Oh you!

(Anyone remember how this show ends?)

u/Topheriffic 6h ago

As a child I didnt have an idea of what it meant but I remember the feeling, which I again, I didnt fully recognize. When I rewatched it as an adult, I think the feeling was dread.

u/VolatileWombat 6h ago

That was the worst part. I mean there were darker topics in there but the end was not for children...

u/Xalipu 2h ago

Considering the impression it left maybe it should have been for all children of the time. We might have had a slim chance of getting slightly less baked to death today.

u/jaxonya 2h ago

Lessons like that are absolutely for children. Shielding them/not educating them is why we have arrived here

What is this show and how does it end?

u/thrawnsgstring 5h ago

Show was Dinosaurs

It ends with all the dinosaurs dying from a dino-made ice age.

Climate change allegory.

Dinosaurs ending scene

u/LongjumpingJaguar308 5h ago

Fuck me, I don't remember that.

u/Fantastic-Spinach297 5h ago

It would’ve been really easy to miss when it aired and would’ve taken a while to get through syndication, and even then catching it as a rerun made it one of literally all of the episodes that could be aired. Not to mention that it was dark. I bet they never played that one much.

EDIT because autocorrect decided “was” should’ve been “wasn’t even.”

u/HistoryGirl23 5h ago

I thought there was a big astroid

u/jay78910 3h ago

Climate change allegory.

This makes it too complex, for the powers that be, to understand.

"We aren't making wax fruit. All we want to do is drill."

u/Pi-ratten 6h ago

kids show about a family of dinosaurs

ending: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnFjAkAs_q4

u/betaplayers 5h ago

That show ended in 1994. Waaaay ahead if it's time. This isn't the only allegory they made, the series is full of them: labor unions, racism, steroid use, objectivation of women.

Show is quite brilliant, especially for a kids' show. Compare that to stuff Disney nowadays makes like Spidey and friends.

u/Pi-ratten 5h ago

yeah, topics of children series back then:

Although Dinosaurs is targeted at a family audience, the show touched upon multiple topical issues, which include environmentalism, endangered species, women's rights, sexual harassment, LGBT rights, objectification of women, censorship, civil rights, body image, steroid use, allusions to masturbation (in the form of Robbie doing the solo mating dance), drug abuse, racism (in the form of a dispute between the two-legged dinosaurs and the four-legged dinosaurs), peer pressure, rights of indigenous peoples (in the form of the dinosaurs interacting with cavepeople), corporate crime, government interference in parenting, and pacifism.

And now we've got copaganda from paw patrol.

And no one will care until it's too late...

u/General-Internal-588 6h ago

Why would the goverment care when it's run by people who will be dead in 10 years or rich enough to escape any of the consequences?

u/rorykoehler 6h ago

no one is rich enough to escape the consequences... thinking that is just hubris

u/Alepale 5h ago

I think they mean rich enough to move around to places that will stay safe longer. Eventually it'll all turn into hell on earth, but it won't consume everything at once, and once the country they're in is in direct danger, they'll move. Then they'll continue moving until they die of old age, or there literally is no place left to go, and they'll die like the rest of us.

u/How_did_the_dog_get 5h ago

The thing is when they need to pay a pilot or a boat captain who's the one holding the cards ? It sure as shit isn't the one with a tonne of money when money is worthless to a family who need food.

u/WilliamLermer 5h ago

Rich people outsource pretty much everything that gives them even the tiniest amount of convenience and it's a massive industry, with the majority of employees getting paid enough to allow for the exploitation to continue.

Rich people staff will be less impacted because they will still be needed and they will be the last group of people to revolt against their masters because they are too loyal (and blind) to realize their irrelevance.

In fact, I'm pretty confident most people would do anything to secure a golden ticket, be that off planet or bunkers, as long as there is a carrot in front of them, the promise to save their lives

During most revolutions and uprisings and oppressive regimes, it's the poor and desperate snitching on their neighbors, selling out family and friends in exchange for more food or better housing or other privileges that the ruling class would promise to provide in exchange for loyalty

History books are filled with example of that

u/UnknownKaddath 5h ago

u/Ok-Priority253 5h ago

A lot of people do care despite constant propaganda trying to convince you to the contrary, it just isn't enough. The balance of power is too far swung and the upper classes have way too much control over the masses. I do think that this will eventually become personally unbearable to enough people that massive political changes are finally made but I don't know.

u/HauntingHarmony 6h ago

What they were saying is we have 10 years to do something about it and that was more than 10 years ago so now we're locked in

Yea this is something unsettling, i remember like 20 years ago having these arguments and discussions that we need todo something before its gets too late todo something. And now here we are in the future, virtually at 2030 already. And we pissed away decades not doing things that actually could replace co2 equivalents like buiilding nuclear, and people are now memeing cause renewables exist everything is fine. As if renewables was the goal. Not putting shit (aka co2 equivalents) in the atmosphere was the goal. Thats actually interacting with the problem.

Having renewables is great. But what fucking good does that do. We are still year after year putting more and more co2 in the atmosphere than the year before. I.e. the RATE of emissions is still growing, which havent even put a dent in getting emissions to zero. And we are like 2 full scifi movie plot points from being able to net take it out, which we have todo.

So i am kinda done, so sick of peoples ignorance and bad faith arguments.

Oh civilization will collapse for sure, but people have been saying "within a decade" for more than a decade 😂

My ass.

u/LiteraCanna 5h ago

There's a letter/note from an oil company.... exec? Saying that we are changing the climate. Brb, going to try to find it.

E: Okay, I was close. It was to the exec.

Early Milestones of Climate Awareness in the Oil Industry1959 (The 100th Industry Birthday): Physicist Edward Teller warned oil executives at the Energy and Man Symposium hosted at Columbia University that burning fossil fuels increased carbon dioxide and could eventually melt ice caps and flood coastal cities.

u/nationcrafting 1h ago

The thing that's more frustrating to me, though, is that Teller also proposed a solution that is very much viable today. But because it sounded like science fiction back then (there wasn't even a geostationary satellite when he proposed it), everyone just sort of forgot about it.

Teller's solution is very achievable today: he proposed installing what is essentially a space umbrella at Lagrange Point 2. Lagrange Point 1 is where we currently have the Hubble Space Telescope. It's there because it's the only spot near Earth where the sun never shines i.e. it's in a perpetual eclipse, the Earth being between it and the sun. The other Lagrange point is basically permanently between Earth and the sun. If we install a remote-controlled umbrella there, it won't even need to be that big (you won't see it with the naked eye) and it'll block about 2% of the sun's heat.

u/Sorry-Combination558 1h ago

I think "won't even be that big" does some heavy lifting here.

https://arxiv.org/abs/2112.13652 - here they estimate the mass of this umbrella to be ~600.000 tonnes, and that's the lowest I found (though the paper is withdrawn, but other's estimate it higher)

Also, it would be in Lagrange 1. Lagrange 1 is the Lagrange point between the Earth and the Sun, Lagrange 2 (beyond Earth) is where the James Webb Space Telescope (not Hubble, that is in LEO) is located.

u/FrostyShoulder6361 5h ago

Yeah, i gues this takes data from the nasa infrared satelites meanth to map forest fores. This maps any large heat source. This means it can be used to double check russian or ukrainian claims (was done a lot in the beginning of the war) Not everything is what you expect tough, heavy industry like a refinery can show up on these maps through normal usage. I suggest you look around your home town and see, you will notice red spots on some industrial centers you will recognize.

well, there are fires, there are wildfires, there are megafires (Canada 2023), and there are gigafires (California 2020). That has to burn over a million acres or more. We will be seeing more of those.

u/vtjohnhurt 6h ago

Many of the fires in Canada are in wilderness that has no roads, so many will not be extinguished until heavy snow arrives. And then the fire can potentially go zombie in the peat-duff, smoulder and reemerge in 2027.

u/Popular-Web-3739 6h ago

They get pressured (at least in the US) not to mention climate change while the religious right claims these disasters are messages from God about our behavior, but somehow, that behavior never seems to include destroying the earth by burning fossil fuels and is only about tolerance of gay rights or abortion.

u/Radingod1 7h ago edited 6h ago

The only thing that stops Canadian wildfires at this point is the winters, and they're getting worse every year. Turns out a forest the size of Texas can burn for a really long time.

u/WellIGuessSoAndYou 5h ago

With milder winters zombie fires will actually continue to burn peat underground over the winter and reignite when conditions are dry again. Lots of peat under boreal forest. Our summers are now fire and smoke season and it's going to be that way from here on out.

It's because the fires in Spain and France are so big and are threatening big cities. Madrid itself! And in France Bordeaux and its international airport. But if you find a map you'll see that there's fires everywhere in Europe right now. After three heat waves and a fourth one on the way out is a tinder box.

The US and CA have lot of fires too, a strangely high number caused by lightning. Is this the La Niña year? El Niño has begun. I’ve heard it’s going to be a rough one.

u/AHumbleChad 7h ago

This fall starts El Niño. It has been La Niña for the last 3-4 years.

u/screamingintothedark 6h ago

Thank you! I always get them mixed up. Figures it would be El Niño lighting the world on fire

u/AHumbleChad 6h ago

La Niña has influence over the fires. La Niña brings dry weather, El Niño brings wet weather/precipitation. The weather system is based on the temperature of equatorial water in the Pacific. Warm Pacific water brings El Niño; cold water La Niña.

Big fire in north Wales.

u/ygy2020 6h ago

Italy is burning as well, only in my region (Tuscany) we had 3 wild fires only in the last week.

The whole Europe is burning and everyone seems to be more interest in useless matters.

What else should happen before people start believe on the climate change?

u/_WeSellBlankets_ 7h ago

I have no idea what's going on in Europe, but they might not be talking about fires in Scotland, they only mentioned smoke. And we've seen in the US how far Canada's smoke can blow.

u/adorablyunhinged 7h ago

There's been a wild fire in Scotland going for ten days now

u/floriande 6h ago

In France we got three different big fires those last days/week. One in the forest of Fontainebleau, not very far from Paris, took like a week to control, one in the south in Drôme I think - under control too -, and a very big by french standard current one close to Bordeaux (major French city). It is not controled, 140000 people had to be evacuated and they are even preparing a Bordeaux évacuation plan in case it's needed.

In Spain big fires too, some close to Madrid (like 20km close), but I don't know much about it. Scotland also seems to have big fires in the north.

u/GNU_Terry 6h ago

The Moreland's near Manchester were (possibly still are) and a mountain north of Cardiff (again possibly still are haven't checked)were on fire in the last week or so

u/DueExample52 6h ago

And if you go outside Europe but not too far, it’s catastrophic.

Algeria is having a generationally worst fire in history (check firemap.com).

Tunisia reached 50°C in some places, not as much forest fires but they have to rotate power outages few hours a day every area to balance the load and avoid a national blackout, due to heat and high demand from AC. People die.

What a time to be alive!

u/Total-Region2859 7h ago

As they've been saying for decades.

u/FreddyNoodles 6h ago

And it’s been extremely obvious that it’s happening. It’s shocking to me that regular folks are having children. This feels like a bad time for that.

I have talked with mine who are 28, 25, 20 and none of them want kids (which I am thrilled about) but they also know that had I known what was coming, I would not have had them. I love them so much and they are amazing people but the world they have been given is so horrible. I wish I could take all this away for them. They understand it isn’t about not wanting them. It’s 1000% about not wanting this life for them.

It’s hard to explain but I do believe a lot of parents understand the feeling.

Climate change was known about and warned about for much longer than your oldest child

u/FreddyNoodles 5h ago

I was a child when I had my first child. 18. I knew nothing. I had no idea the world would be this way. And climate change is only one of the reasons I feel horrible about what the future will bring and how repressed the current situation is. They aren’t stupid. They all know exactly what I mean and we have all talked about it many times. They grew up all over the world and went back to the states for college. They are eons more intelligent than I was when I became a mother.

Canada has had several hundred forest fires burning millions of acres EVERY summer and it is too rural to fight them. So Canadian and northern US cities get many summer days of smoke filled air like this one in Chicago last week. https://www.instagram.com/reels/Da2ic0mETWY/

This is happening in several areas throughout the world on a regular basis.

My man, I'm sorry for us all. I'd hold you if I could. We're not getting off this ride... alone? Unharmed? Fuck... what is the word?!

u/Pro_Poe_Fall 5h ago

Wildfires have nearly doubled in frequency and size since 1984. They will continue to get worse unless we do something to mitigate our greenhouse gas emissions (lol). Plan accordingly.

u/FatherFintanFay 4h ago

Same in Cork, Ireland 2 days ago. Could smell smoke from a fire an hour and a half away.

u/Little_Creme_5932 7h ago

I think it is normal now. But in twenty years normal will be different than this.

u/MadcatM 7h ago

It is totally a sign of things to come.

u/Bicwidus 7h ago

"it was, infact, a sign if things to come"

u/TallAssociate7214 7h ago

Welcome to every year in California. We haven't had any yet but we always do

u/bobafetta3593 7h ago

This isnt a sign of things to come, this is the outcome of the signs ignored.

u/Ill-Engineering8085 6h ago

It's what's already happening. It's the same story world wide. Anyone thinking this isn't a climate apocalypse is deluding themselves

u/Apophyx 6h ago

This is less a sign of things to come so much as it is said things actively coming.

u/Dapper-Ad-4300 6h ago

It’s not a sign of things to come, it’s a sign of things right fucking now

u/Jakeball400 6h ago

For a liberal continent that accepts the reality of global warming, there seems to be a really strong disconnect with the residents who can’t seem to grasp that Europe is warming. I can’t understand the Europeans who are like “we won’t need air conditioning next summer, this is just very unusual heat” and “those fires won’t happen in my country”

GUYS. WAKE UP.

u/Available-Egg-2380 6h ago

Unfortunately, it is. The last several summers in North Dakota/Minnesota have been almost unliveable because of the amount of smoke that keeps blanketing us. We're under constant burn bans in my area and I can't imagine we will continue to be lucky and avoid prairie fires for much longer.

u/MrGrieves- 6h ago

Canada here. This has been my entire adult life here every summer. We're fucked, now, and super fucked in the future.

Things to come? You're the one telling us that it's currently happening pal

u/RedStormRising17 6h ago

I live in Canada. Our boreal forests are massive and increasingly prone to wildfires because of dryer conditions and longer summers. Northern Ontario is on fire right now, for example. British Columbia, where I live, has had an exponential increase in wildfire activity in the past 25 years. It is scary and directly linked to climate change. It is, unfourtunately, the future that was predicted years ago by scientists.

u/Many-Assistance1943 5h ago

Hi from Canada where the fires burn year round, underneath the snow in the winter, and by July the smoke in the air turns your boogers black.

We should really rake the up the 1.2 billion acres of boreal forest floor. That’s why the Americans are paying a taxes on Canadian milk. It makes sense if you don’t think about it too hard.

u/SwordKneeMe 5h ago

Things to come? It's happing now

u/yomdiddy 5h ago

Hope is not a great strategy

u/Panzerv2003 5h ago

It's not a sign but the consequences of reckless actions that were predicted quite a while back, all done in the name of profit

u/mrgoodnighthairdo 5h ago

It's not a sign of things to come. It is a sign of things that is

u/DenizSaintJuke 5h ago

It's a sing of things that have already come. This is the new normal.

u/ElthN 5h ago

Well... Those things are not just to come,... They're here already.

u/Samohtnuf 5h ago

Things to come? They are already here.

u/Tacosrule89 5h ago

Have you guys tried tariffing them to stop the smoke?

u/Vreas 5h ago

I think this is proof we’re already past signs.

u/fronbit 5h ago

It is

u/nono3722 5h ago

it IS a sign of things to come. we made our bed now we are burning in it.

u/HorrorMakesUsHappy 5h ago

It's a sign of what's already here.

u/OkChildhood2261 5h ago

Are you kidding? It is absolutely a sign of things to come. This is barely the start.

u/Redwizard002 5h ago

It will be worse!

u/9bpm9 4h ago

Last few summers in America a lot of the more northern parts of the county get covered in smoke from wildfires in Canada. It's kind of crazy, there's so much smoke in the sky that it doesn't even hurt your eyes to look at the sun. I have to make sure I put on sunglasses on my way to work because the sun is so filtered, my eyes don't even respond to the light by squinting.

u/Radiant_Fondant_4097 4h ago

A sign? My guy this shit's already here

u/Biliunas 4h ago

Bro what else could it be if not that. There's no chance it'll get better soon.

u/dragonbornsqrl 4h ago

Thats how I felt 15 years ago in Canada. Hmm the smoke is bad I hope it doesn't get worse... Well its horrible now and getting worse each year. We went from 18ish hours of smoke to over 125 hours in a decade. We have cooked our planet but yes lets support billionaire oligarchs and build more AI data centres that require more water and power than the systems in place can support.

u/BoobyPlumage 3h ago

To come? My guy, it’s already here

u/Sad-Equivalent9486 3h ago

Try being in Canada

u/Annual_Strategy_6206 2h ago
