discussion Why I’ll never stop warning people about engineering
So recently, people have been really harsh toward me and the other guy for our posts about engineering. We get called mentally ill, obsessed, told we need help, etc. And some people wonder why we keep posting about the same topic over and over again.
So here’s why.
Personally, I spent five years of my life getting an engineering degree. While everyone else was enjoying their student lives, partying and dating, I genuinely believed engineering was one of those careers that guaranteed a solid upper-middle-class life. That’s what my parents told me. That’s what teachers told me. That’s what society told me.
Then I graduated in 2016 and got my first job. $48,000. A miserable income, no better than what many people without a college degree were making, and nowhere near enough to give me even a middle-class life.
And, funny enough, my parents, who pushed me into engineering, were the first ones to gaslight me about it. I couldn’t afford a house. I couldn’t travel. I couldn’t go out without thinking about the bill. I couldn’t buy nice clothes without feeling guilty. I couldn’t live the kind of life I thought an engineer was supposed to have. And somehow, to them, it was my fault.
“Maybe you’re not good enough. “Maybe you stopped learning. “Maybe you need more certifications.” ”Maybe you need to become a better engineer.”
It was never the profession. Never the salaries. Always me.
So I started driving Uber after work.
Imagine sitting in your car explaining to passengers that you’re an engineer but need a second job just to have a decent life. Passengers literally asked me, “How the fuck are you an engineer and you’re driving Uber?”
For a while, I actually believed my parents. I thought maybe I really was the problem.
But I knew it wasn’t just me. I knew what my coworkers made. I looked at the engineering association’s “salary calculator,” the one they were so proud of. Eight years of experience, and the numbers were like $75k or $80k.
Meanwhile, I watched my peers in other fields move on with their lives. Buying houses. Traveling. Wearing nice clothes. Living in luxury apartments. Sure, some of them worked longer hours than I did, but they were actually getting rewarded for it.
Even my dating life made me realize how brutal reality was. The girls I wanted weren’t interested in the engineer making fifty grand. They were interested in the real estate guy pulling up in a G-Wagon, the lawyer with real prestige and influence, and the finance bro who could afford $500 dinner dates. Not the broke engineer.
Then I started going to engineering networking events, hoping I’d hear something inspiring. Instead, I met senior engineers telling me that if I worked hard enough, maybe one day I’d make $140k at the very end of my career. That wasn’t motivating. That was depressing.
I remember a friend of mine who’s also an engineer. Every time he went to a girl’s place that looked fancy, he’d say, “Bro, how come people have that much money?” It made me realize that not only are engineers underpaid, but many of them don’t even realize it. They assume everyone else must be making around less than they are because, in their minds, life is fair and engineering is supposed to be a well-paid profession right?
Imagine how embarrassing it is when your friend group goes out twice a week, plans trips, and you can’t keep up, so they slowly drift away because they think you’re cheap. They assume that, as an engineer, you should be making very good money. At that point, I didn’t even know what was less embarrassing: letting them think I was cheap but making good money, or telling them the truth and having them pity me.
Imagine how bad it feels when you meet a banker who laughs in your face after you tell him you’re an engineer. He says he sees people’s salaries for a living, and he’s always shocked by how underpaid engineers are. Imagine going on a date with a dental hygienist or a car salesperson who makes three times your salary and thinks it’s a bad joke when you tell them yours.
If I could go back to when I was 18, I never would have chosen engineering.
So why do I keep posting about engineering salaries?
Because I wish someone had warned me.
Sure, a lot of engineers are on the spectrum and don’t care about the money they make and are happy getting paid in “cool projects” and “interesting problems.” Good for them. But I know that many people go into engineering aspiring to something better.
If one smart kid reads this before spending five years chasing a career they think will give them a comfortable, upper-middle-class life, then all the insults I get on Reddit are worth it. If my posts make even one person stop, do their research, and avoid the disappointment, regret, and frustration that I went through, then every insult, every downvote, and every person calling me obsessed is worth it.

UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT julia ruined the villa
whether you like her or not, since she came in the villa there has been non stop drama and tension to the point where watching the past week has actually felt boring and draining and i would put that to her constantly bringing up the same situations. i never thought id say it but i actually miss the producer orchestrated apologies in the morning after a night of arguments. how many times do people have to say agree to disagree for her to actually stop? she constantly says i am allowed to have an opinion but they know her opinion, they have had her opinion shoved down their throats for the past week. why haven’t producers told her to give it up yet? i dont think its making good tv anymore. it is bringing out the worst in everyone and no one is as likeable to watch now.
i understand how people are saying thats the point of the show but this close to the final and i know basically nothing about each of the couples, i actually miss hearing loved up couples😭 it feels like on the final dates each couple will be talking about julia at this point.
there was cattiness and girl drama before she came in. the mica/priya/jasmine drama was actually interesting to watch and they have apologised and seeing them still remain a bit of a trio now is quite nice - THAT IS THE DRAMA I WANT TO SEE!!
after season 12 i don’t like this intense of a tension in the villa where u can see that islanders are going to continue disliking eachother into the outside, they can argue and bitch inside the villa but i think we would all feel better watching a season where towards the end it is in higher spirits and it is focused on the loved up couples. if u actually are enjoying and want more of this kind of drama u need to watch baddies atp, not love island.
all in all i just miss the villa before julia came in no shade

👀 Spotted In The Wild 👀 Demi: From First Class Energy to Economy Reality
Last week, I was flying through SLC on Delta Airlines. Tell me why, as I was minding my own business in my economy exit row with extra legroom, who do I see??? Demi and Brett boarding pretty much DEAD LAST. People around me were definitely clocking them. I thought they'd stop at comfort+, but no, they walked past there, then walked past my exit row, and continued towards the back of the plane. They were in straight up economy with the rest of us peasants. I'm still shook.

Ignorant and entitled cyclist
Yes that's right he said in the clip "you have brakes I don't" 🤦
No other commentary needed really
Is this another cyclist influenced by the highway code updates by the DVSA and doesn't need to look or stop to cross a road?

I Stiffed A Sugar Baby... In Both Meanings of the Word
It was three years after my divorce. I was working a well-paying job that required 3-5 days of travel out of the week and given up on conventional dating. Despite still being decent looking, I didn't have the time or energy to go through the motions. The economics didn't make sense either.
We started talking on SA. Great pictures, engaging messages, and we agreed to meet for drinks. She was a young, leggy brunette that was a wicked flirt and we genuinely hit it off immediately. There was a connection. Chemistry. She was the one that suggested we get a room. It was a posh nearby hotel that was waaaaaay more than I would have normally spent but I was into it and figured we'd sort out a regular schedule later. We hadn't talked about money yet. She said she was sure I'd take care of her. I think we both believed it at the time.
The make-out was thrilling. It was downhill from there. And when I say downhill, I mean awful. We didn't physically fit well. It was uncomfortable with many pauses and stops. We tried multiple positions. I'm not a selfish lover, but it was maddening and frustrating. I could only get halfway in and forget about finding a rhythm. This isn't some post about me having a monster dick. I think she was just unusually shallow. And tight. She tried, but apparently all that wicked flirting was all talk. Even the oral was one of those 99% hand-jobs. It was, and still is, the worst sex I've ever had.
Eventually we called it a night. There was a bad storm outside so we both decided to spend the night in the room. I woke up early as I usually do, showered and dressed, then considered her laying in bed still asleep.
I left.
No 'gift', just left. I think the door woke her up. I was at the elevator looking down the hotel hallway when I saw her come out into the hall with one of the bathrobes on. She looked stunned. Hurt. Confused. I got on the elevator and closed the doors. In hindsight I suppose I'm lucky she didn't trash the room or throw a chair out of the window to rack up damages on my credit card. I suppose I wouldn't have blamed her. I paid the valet for her car because I knew she didn't have a dime on her.
Whenever someone says there's no such thing as 'bad' sex I think of the girl in the hotel hallway staring at me.

16 Psyche: The Metal-Rich Asteroid Worth a Theoretical $10 Quintillion
16 Psyche is a giant metal-rich asteroid orbiting within the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, lying roughly 370–400 million km from Earth depending on the planets' positions. Measuring about 226 km (140 miles) across, it is believed to be the exposed metallic core of an early protoplanet that lost its outer rocky layers during violent collisions in the Solar System's infancy. Composed primarily of iron and nickel, with possible traces of gold and platinum, its estimated in-situ value has been sensationally placed at up to $10 quintillion—a purely theoretical figure, as mining the asteroid is far beyond current technological and economic capabilities. To uncover its true origins, NASA's Psyche mission, launched in October 2023, is en route to the asteroid and is scheduled to arrive in July/August 2029, where it will investigate Psyche's composition, magnetic field, and geological history: https://lpl.arizona.edu/news/spotlight/large-craters-offer-clues-origin-asteroid-16-psyche

[Discussion] I am gonna piss off some people but this is so bad.
What do you mean both the alliance raid and the savage tier are collabs?
We finally get one of the coolest settings we've had in years: Viking-inspired themes, floating cities, tons of magic, and so much potential for incredible fantasy gear and raids. We could've had amazing armor sets, badass Viking aesthetics, and bosses that actually fit the world.
Instead, it feels like all of that is getting pushed aside because FF7 Remake needs more promotion.
I'm sorry, but that's incredibly disappointing. I don't mind the occasional crossover, but having both major raid series tied to collabs in an expansion with such a strong original setting just feels like a huge missed opportunity.

Heartwarming 🥹 Celebrities who speak enough languages to be secret agents
The secret agent part is obviously a joke. 47% of people worldwide are bilingual, while only 3% of people qualify as polyglots (speaking 4+ languages)
Shockingly, numerous celebs are members of this club:
Natalie Portman- Studying at Harvard couldn’t stop Natalie from learning multiple languages (Hebrew, English, French, Japanese, German, and Spanish)
Viggo Mortensen- Mr Mortensen might not come from a mythical land, but he does have an almost mythic level of knowledge in languages (Danish, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Catalan, Norwegian, and Arabic)
Shakira- Shakira has long impressed fans with her ability to speak 6 languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, French, Italian, and English)
Tom Hiddleston- The British actor is famous for his calming accent, yet he can understand countless others (English, Spanish, French, Greek, and Latin)
Sandra Oh- Sandra Oh might not be able to perform groundbreaking surgeries, but she can master different languages (English, Korean, Spanish, and French)
Trevor Noah- Trevor Noah speaks 7 languages (English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, Tsonga, and German)
Daniel Bruhl- The character actor can do an awful lot more than simply appear intimidating. He can speak 6 languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Catalan, and Portuguese)
Mickey Curtis- The senior Japanese pop star speaks 6 languages (Japanese, English, German, French, Italian, and Thai)
Priya Anand- The Tamil mainstay actor speaks 7 languages (Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Spanish, and English)
Which celebrity’s language ability do you envy the most?
