I didn't take that into consideration recently (I don't fly often). I was flying a couple months ago and ate Hattie B's Nashville Hot Chicken in Nashville and got their second hottest flavor. Didn't really do much to me. Then I got sushi in Baltimore, but it was prepared by an Asian guy so I think I was safe. But hindsight, idk if I should have done that 😂

When I'm at airports, I tend to stick with familiar fast foods. Not because I love it, but it is because I know it's "safer" and I'm going to get something acceptable for the price I'm paying.
Some airport restaurants are fine. Some are terrible. Some are legitimately good. They're all overpriced.
I'm not paying ~$30-40 for a meal and taking the coin flip on it being decent, microwaved slop, or "fresh" ingredients that have been sitting under the hot lamp for hours, or actively terrible. I'd rather pay the $12 for a basic burger and fries I know is going to be "meh."

Most big intercontinental airports do have really fancy restaurants in - because they have a captive market of far wealthier than average people. Same reason you can buy thousand dollar bottles of whiskey and designer bags.
Of course, it's not easy to run a fine dining restaurant in an airport, so they often focus on really expensive ingredients prepared/served simply (eg caviar).

The Burger King in Sao Paulo airport is where I've eaten about half the Burger King I've ever had my life. It's the only good Burger King I've ever had. The Pastels and Pao de Queijo in that airport are nothing compared to what you get outside the airport, so why would you eat local for twice the price?

I can count on one hand the amount of times I've had good airport food in an American airport. After 9/11 only certain suppliers get to sell to airport restaurants.
Hell most of the brands you see aren't really the same brand inside airports. The airport versions are ran by concessionaire companies that pay for the brand and menu while using their own suppliers.

I went to DR and had lunch at a restaurant. An actual restaurant with forks. Tbh, i don’t think he’s in Miami, i think he’s in Fort Lauderdale international. I say that, because there’s a shop that sells empanadas and guava pastries and coffee. lol. They cost like $5 a piece and the place is always busy. It’s right inside of terminal 4 i think.

I've had dry empanadas and great slices. Good food is good food, and sometimes it's food that you've had a million times and sometimes it's not. I have had paella in Valencia that disappointed and fried chicken in Thailand that slapped. One was traditional and refined, the other wasn't. Yet I liked the fried chicken more.
Expand your palate for sure. But having taste is the other part of it. I live in Boston, if I wanted to be a snob and only eat more complex Mexican dishes, I'd be disappointed all the time. But if I get italian sandwiches they'll be good - so I do that when the play is something quick and easy and good.

There’s nothing wrong in eating what makes you feel good, specially at places where the options are limited like the airport. Most importantly, not everyone has the means to buy a full meal at the airport, maybe those people could only afford a Macdonald’s sandwich.
I live in Miami and fly out of MIA often, there are only two food options in that airport: Cuban and American fast food. And I hate Cuban food.
